The guests danced gracefully across the dance floor.
A little girl stood helpless in the sea of people. She raised her head and looked around, peering at each face. Where was her mother? She didn't dare make a sound. No one noticed her at all. Maybe it was because she was too small.
She walked through the crowd and looked at all the smiling faces. The she suddenly tugged tightly at one woman's dress.
The smile on the woman's face faded away. "What is it?" she asked, frowning.
"Auntie, I want to go see Mom." The little girl looked at her timidly.
"Oh... What's your mother's name?" The woman studied the girl and saw that she was dressed in expensive clothing.
"I... I don't know," the little girl said fearfully.
"If you don't know, then how can I help you find your mother? Go away, you little pest!" The woman was disgusted by the audacity of this little girl. How dare she come to this ball and ruin her mood? Why would a child come here? Wasn't it just ridiculous?
"Auntie, please help me find my mother." The little girl tugged at her dress more tightly.
"I told you to go away!" The woman swatted the little girl and pushed her towards the ground. The little girl fell on the floor with a soft thud.
"Wah!" the little girl cried out loud. She attracted the attention of many people. Suddenly, the room erupted into whispers. People looked at the woman with narrowed eyes. Feeling embarrassed, she left angrily.
The little girl sat on the ground crying for a while, and then suddenly saw that a little boy was looking at her. He was about the same age as her. "Don't cry. What's your name?" the boy asked in a sweet voice.
"My... My name is..." The little girl blinked and stared at the flying object behind the boy.
The little boy seemed to notice the fear in the little girl's eyes. He turned around and stood up abruptly. It was a red wine glass. The little girl was so frightened that she lowered her head and closed her eyes. She could not get herself to move. The glass seemed suspended in the air. Then, a pair of small hands tightly held the little girl's hands. She felt someone pull her up.
Crash! The glass shattered into pieces the moment it hit the ground. A clear, sharp voice brought the little girl back to the present. She felt the warmth in her palms and saw an angel smiling at her.
Golden light framed the boy's face as he helped her up. She suddenly felt a strange sense of comfort and security.
People began to dance once more as the musicians picked up their instruments to play. They played a Waltz and the whole room was filled with beautiful music. The little boy and the little girl locked eyes and it was in that moment that they knew that they were meant to find each other.
Clang! The bell rang.
Thwack! The loud blare of the alarm clock roused Selina Qian from her deep sleep. With a grunt, she knocked it off of her side table.
"Damn it! It was that dream again. Why do I keep having such a strange dream? What is it about that boy? Honestly, this is getting out of hand! I'm my parents' perfect daughter. I'm as pure as freshly fallen snow. I would never think about a man in that way!" Selina Qian ran a hand through her long hair. She shook her head and rolled her eyes as covering herself with her blanket.
In just a few minutes, she was fast asleep.
At eighteen years of age, Selina Qian had never been on a single date. This was a fact she prided herself in. She was a beautiful woman with delicate facial features and long, black hair. Her bangs made her look more cute than sexy, although she could definitely pass as either one. When Selina Qian was in kindergarten, a little boy had tried to confess his love to her by giving her an orange. She did not know what to do, so she ran away. Since then, she had received around three or four love letters all the way up to junior high school, but all of the letters were hidden away by her overprotective brother, Zack Qian.
"Selina, today is the first day of the new semester! Why are you still sleeping? Get up and eat your breakfast. Your brother has been waiting for you downstairs for a long time. Hurry up! Remember to take your phone with you so that you can contact me and your father. Do you hear me?" Judy Song, Selina's mother, walked into her room.
"Okay, Mom... Just... One more minute..." Selina said, her eyes fluttering.
"Oh, no you don't! Do you even know what time it is? It would be a shame to be late on the first day of school!" Judy Song picked up the alarm clock and waved it in front of her daughter's face.
"Ah! It's already seven o'clock. School starts at eight! Mom!" Selina immediately jumped out of her bed and went straight to the bathroom to freshen up. In a couple of minutes, she was dressed and ready to go. She ran downstairs to the kitchen to meet Zack Qian but she discovered he had already gone on ahead of her.
"What a heartless guy!" Disappointed, Selina shook her head, grabbed a piece of bread and stuffed it into her mouth. She grabbed her schoolbag in one hand and rushed out of the house with her suitcase in the other hand.
"Bye, Mom!" Selina yelled out. Today was her first day of school. She had studied so hard to be admitted to the MJN University. Being late was simply not an option.
"Don't run too fast. Be careful on the road! Listen carefully in class..." Judy's voice trailed off as she stared at Selina running towards school. She felt a pang of sentimentality in her heart and had to steady herself.
MJN University!
Selina ran all the way to the university and relaxed when she finally saw the gate. The gold-plated school name on the gate was particularly eye-catching in the sunlight.
Suddenly, she heard the squeal of a car's brake and its tires screeching. She looked behind her and saw a sleek Porsche Cayenne pull up to the gate.
This school was truly for nobility. Through the car window, Selina could make out the face of the young man sitting in the driver's seat. His eyes were covered by a pair of black sunglasses and his ears sparkled with a pair of shiny studs. The young man saw her looking at him and he stared back, making Selina avoid his gaze in embarrassment.
"Damn it! There are only three minutes left." Selina glanced at the watch on her wrist and her eyes widened at the time.
Suddenly, she felt a gust of hot wind and saw the Porsche speed away.
"Clap!" Selena gasped for air as she opened the classroom door. She clutched the side of her waist and tried to catch her breath.
"What's your name?" A stern voice called out to her from the front of the classroom.
It was not until Selina saw the class director standing in front of her that she responded. She immediately straightened up. "Selina Qian."
The class director's eyes lit up. Selina Qian? The one who scored the highest in the one hundred and fiftieth entrance exam?
"Selina, find a seat and sit down. Don't be late next time," the director said in a softer tone.
"I won't," Selina said, her face warm.
"You can sit on that vacant seat," the director said, pointing at a seat in the second row.
"Okay," said Selina. She walked towards her seat and looked around her, desperate to find a familiar face. She was disappointed to see that she did not know anyone.
"Now that everyone is here, I'll introduce myself. My name is Allen Chen. You can call me Allen." Allen Chen put his hands on the desk and glanced at the students' faces. He stared at Selina and said, "Selina, since you got the first place in the whole grade for the entrance exam, I'm leaving you temporarily in charge of recent class affairs."
"Ah, me?" Selina blinked. "O-okay..." Selina did not expect to be put on the spot.
"You can head to the dormitory and put your luggage away first. Familiarize yourself with the campus. Also, don't forget to get your uniforms from the downstairs office. You will be needing them starting tomorrow." With that, Allen Chen strode out of the classroom.
"So... you're Selina?" a voice asked. Selina turned around and found herself face to face with a pretty girl. She had almond-shaped, brown eyes and wavy, brown hair that flowed all the way to her waist. Her clothes complemented her tight figure.
"Y-yes. Yes, I am! Who are you?" Selina smiled.
"I'm Monica Yi. I'm your roommate."
"Oh, I see. Nice to meet you." Selina was worried that she'd have trouble making friends, but now here she was, making her very first one!
"You, too." Monica Yi shook hands with Selina and smiled at her.
Selina had heard that the MJN University was a high-end school for nobles. It took her thirty minutes to walk from the classroom to the dormitories. Selina feasted her eyes on the beautiful buildings that surrounded the whole campus. They had all been standing for a long time but they did not seem to show any signs of aging. They were truly breathtaking. A small river stood between the girls' and boys' dormitories, glimmering blue in the midday sun. Selina marveled at it and sighed deeply, entranced by the beauty of it all.
