I felt lonely and depressed as I had to live apart from my love, my husband, who had arrived in my life as an angel, just to make me forget the struggles I had faced throughout my previous life. He had made my life worth living and given me a sense of security, care, and love that any girl in the world would desire from her life partner. But little did I expect that my life would turn out to be what it is today. I was lost in thought when my doctor friend Estella arrived in the room. She had to sprinkle some water over me to get me out of my thoughts.
"It's time for your injections, Anne. You will have to take them on time to recover from the depression and anxiety you are facing, my dear," she tried to explain.
'I am missing him a lot, Estella. I don't think that I can live without him." I said, soaked in despair.
"Just chill, Anne! Everything will be alright!" Estella tried to console me as she held my hands to dress up my wrist. It was still hurting like a thousand devils. I groaned out of pain as she dressed it up.
"What was the need for attempting suicide, Estella? Is Ben the only person that matters to you? Have we all now become insignificant for you? At least you should have thought of your company. Don't you remember your struggle and hard work in establishing it? What is it that made you take such a step? If your maid had not called me on time, then it would have been just impossible to save you." She simply flooded me with questions.
What else can you expect any lady to do if she discovers suddenly that the person, she married is not a human but a vampire? I exclaimed.
"You might be mistaken, my dear. How did you know that he was a vampire?" asked Estella.
"I am not mistaken, Estella! I caught him several times drinking a red liquid, which he called red berry juice. But as my suspicion increased, I sent the bottle for lab inspection, and they confirmed that it was blood." I exclaimed.
"But if Ben is a vampire, then how did you spend a happy married life with him for the past two years? How was it possible to make a physical relationship with him?" Estella asked, as she was shocked.
"I don't know how, but I am sure now that he is a vampire, and he drinks blood almost every night. Although he eats and drinks like normal human beings at other times, I wondered myself as I tried to recall if he was really a vampire or not.
"Yes! I am a vampire! But I am half human and half vampire. That is why I can eat and drink like normal human beings do." I could hear the voice of Ben, and I just yelled out.
"Who let him in? Estella, just ask the guards to throw him out! I don't want to see the face of that cheater ever again in my life. He has taken advantage of my emotions and deceived me." I tried to be rude, but then I got flooded with emotions, and tears rolled down my cheeks.
"Trust me, Anne; I never intended to deceive you. I just wanted to disclose the truth to you, but then I feared that I would end up breaking your heart. No one ever loved me in my life, and I could not let you dislike me as well. I discovered through my senses that you are my destined mate, and so I left things to my fate." I could notice that even his eyes got filled as he uttered those words.
"But you should have revealed the truth to me, Ben! I married you, and now it is impossible for me to live without you, so I attempted suicide." I complained.
He came closer to me and planted a kiss on my lips, trying to calm me down, and I was surprised that his proximity made me forget all the grievances that I had against him. His touch simply seemed magical. This is how I got attracted to him and married him without making a proper inquiry about his background.
"I had to lie all my life and conceal my identity out of sheer helplessness. My mother is a human, and my father is a vampire. When my mother gave birth to a half-human, half-vampire like me, the vampire community just banished us, and my father refused to support us. I was born such that when I am filled with emotions, I act like a human, and at times, when I am deprived of emotions, I behave like a vampire. At that moment, I get a craving to drink blood. But trust me, I never drink the blood of the people whom I love." His speech was disturbed midway as the police knocked at the door.
"Arrest him, inspector! He is the person who has murdered Lily." My company's board member, Henry, spoke these words as he instigated the police to arrest Ben. I had suspended him previously on corruption charges.
"Trust me, Anne, I didn't murder Lily. I love you, Anne, and so I am especially careful not to hurt your sentiments or harm anybody whom you consider significant in your life. I am getting falsely accused; just save me, Anne." He tried explaining while he was again interrupted by the inspector.
"We have already seen the CCTV footage. There was nobody else other than you in the office at the time of Lily's death. Our suspicion has proved correct. So, we are arresting you on murder charges, Mr. Ben. You are under arrest." The inspector extended the handcuff towards Ben. I was awestruck to see him fly towards the ceiling. In the process, his head hit the attic. This was enough to convince me that he was, in fact, a vampire.
Within seconds, he was out of the window and vanished into thin air, as it seemed difficult to locate the direction in which he flew since his flying speed was such that our eyes could hardly see. I wondered how he could fly, as he didn't possess a wing. Was it that he was not really flying but just jumping high?
I got too puzzled about Ben, and my curiosity for him increased, although staying with him seemed impossible for me anymore. But my emotions for him kept me attracted to him. Perhaps he was right. He was my destined mate, and so I felt attracted to him all the while, despite knowing the truth about him.
The other day I felt better, and I was discharged from the hospital and returned home, but then my heart was in shambles, and the beautiful bungalow seemed to be all in ruins without Ben's presence. I hoped against hope that he would return, although I feared him being a vampire.
I just made myself a glass of red wine to reduce my tension. But I was again flabbergasted as I read the headlines in the newspaper: "The MD of Franks Automobile Pvt. Ltd. and the CEO's husband flies and absconds while trying to be arrested. Is he a supernatural being or a vampire? Would this affect the reputation of the company in the future?" I banged the newspaper on the table in frustration. These media people have no other work but to sneak into others' private lives.
I got worried about my sales going down, but then I remembered that Ben had just helped me make a full-proof plan to make our automobiles available to customers at a lesser rate than any other automobile company was offering at that time without any compromise in the quality of the vehicles. I felt grateful to Ben for helping me achieve the target that I had desired for years together. Other than being a vampire, he had all the other qualities that a wife would ever expect from a good husband.
But what about my dearest friend and secretary, Lily? Was he not unfair to me by taking her life for no reason at all? Wasn't Ben behind her death? Weren't the police right in arresting him? I was too confused, and my mind was bombarded with questions.
The balmy morning breeze drifting in from the small window was fragrant with the scents of the ocean and blew away the hairlocks from my face, and I was carried away by the memories of the day when I met Ben for the first time.
I remembered that I was in the habit of night walking, I was walking in the park nearby my bungalow two years ago. It must be around 9 pm. I could notice some commotion behind me. I turned back but couldn't find anybody. But when I persistently felt that somebody was following me, I turned back to find a very handsome looking, young guy follow me. But although he was walking wearing heavy boots, the sound of his footsteps couldn't be heard. The guy smirked at me. I gave him a curt look and turned away my face. But the very next moment, I turned around and found that he had vanished.
The sweet memories just brought a smile to my otherwise tensed face. But then, the very next moment, I was saddened by the loss of my best friend and secretary, Lily. To think that Ben was responsible for her death made me frustrated, so I just rushed outside and started driving. I forgot at that moment that I was advised by my doctor not to drive myself as it would cause pain in my wrist.
But I was filled with wrath for Ben, and so, ignoring the pain, I drove towards the bridge and then stopped the car nearby the seashore. I was just feeling pacified by the cool air and the picturesque sight when an SUV passing by halted suddenly, and before I could realise what was happening, I was already gagged and blindfolded. I could just feel the hands of a strong man when he almost threw me into the SUV. I felt suffocated as they drove me for almost an hour. I wriggled and protested, trying to escape from their clutches, but then their grip was strong, and my wrist hurt a lot, making it impossible to escape. I had my mobile phone in the pocket of my jeans. I wished that I could give a call to my servants or to my friends. But they never gave me a chance to do so.
The driver finally parked the car somewhere, and I could guess from the elevators that they were taking me to the top floor of a skyscraper. I was skilled in martial arts myself, but then I was not given a chance to fight and escape as two strong men gripped my hands tightly while pushing me forcibly into a dark room, as I could sense even though I was blindfolded.
I was finally ungagged, and I choked continuously for minutes before I could say anything.
"Drink this glass of water; you will feel better," one of them said, and I felt that I recognised his voice but couldn't recollect at that moment.
I was craving water, and I couldn't refuse it, so I drank it in a single draught without giving a second thought to whether I was getting poisoned.
But I realised that it was water and nothing else because I felt better after drinking it.
"Who the hell are you? Why have you kidnapped me? You all will soon be caught. Don't you know who I am? I am the CEO of Frank Automobiles. You bastards will soon be arrested by the police." I abused them literally.
"All your pride will soon vanish into thin air, you bitch. Just let my boss arrive once." He replied curtly as he chained my hands and legs to a pole in the room. "You will be given your meals, and that is the reason I am not gagging you again." He left the room locking me behind as he said those words.
I felt uneasy and helpless. What were these guys up to? For the past two years, Ben has always been there beside me to protect me. I used to feel so secure with him. I wished that he was around to help me out in this situation. I was still blindfolded, so I could hardly see around or guess where I was.
I was struggling to unchain myself when the door was flung open. "Remove the cloth from around her eyes. Let her be able to see me. She should also know how powerful I am." I could hear a coarse voice speaking as the blindfold was removed from around my eyes.
I could see a very tall and robust person standing in front of me. He had his hair tied into a small pony, and he looked extremely wealthy in his attire and accessories.
"I hope you have already recognised me, Anne. Did you?" He asked with a pun in his voice.
"Sorry, but I don't recognise such criminals and kidnappers as you. I live amidst respected civilians." My speech was full of scorn and contempt for the chief of the kidnappers.
"Hahaha... What a joke! Your own husband is a murderer, and you call yourself a respected civilian? We all know that he has absconded from arrest. You better heed our demands or else we will leave no stone unturned in spreading the news that Ben is a vampire." He again burst out into laughter while he said so, and his voice echoed throughout the room. I looked all around and found that the room was as big as the size of a small auditorium, fully furnished with furniture from all over the world.
I was irritated at his threats and remarks and could not help but ask him, "How do you know that Ben is a vampire and who told you that he has absconded?"
"It is not important how I came to know these facts. But imagine if this confirmed news is published in the newspapers tomorrow; then what will be your plight?" He laughed even louder this time.
He continued his speech as I breathed out aloud in frustration, "I am Joseph Andrews, the founder of Venus Automobiles, your toughest rival. Our automobiles were highly in demand until a couple of years ago. But as Ben joined as MD in your company, I suffered a setback. I just want to teach that vampire a good lesson so that he never ever dares again to meddle with me."
"Oh! You piece of shit! That means that you are envious of my success. Haha, it is natural for you to be jealous anyway. We are doing far better than your company currently. You better wind it up, or else you will face worse situations in the future." I turned out to be insulting him due to his provocation.
"You fucking bitch, simply blurt out the business secret plan that is making you so successful, or else help us in beheading the vampire." He threatened me as he called the inspector inside.
"He's my friend, and he was going to arrest Ben when he absconded. Either you do as I said or else be ready for the torture. Tell me your preference. I know you are a businesswoman and will opt for the second choice and help us in beheading Ben." Said he.
"I am not going to heed either of your demands. Do you think I will succumb to your torture? never" I retorted.
He was enraged at my outright refusal to obey him, and he picked up the cane used by the inspector and hit me hard on my already slit veins on my wrist. For a moment, I felt that I would perish, as I could see my wrists drenched in blood. But he was hardly satisfied with his act, and he took out his pocketknife and cut me all over my arms, which were chained to the pole already. Since I was already a weak, I became unconscious.
When I regained my consciousness, I found myself in a dark room with a ventilator allowing a few rays of light to enter. One of the kidnappers was sitting on a chair beside me. As he saw me in a conscious state, he blew a whistle to call other kidnappers to the dark room. I could feel the blood clot on my wrist and arms. The pain seemed to be unbearable.
Joseph rushed inside and flashed the light of his torch on the mobile phone right in my eyes, intentionally making me uneasy. I felt as though I would go blind.
"Hey! This is a final warning to you to help us in beheading that vampire, or else the Merchant's Guild has decided to ban you from carrying on your business anywhere on this continent. We are not comfortable allowing any vampire to intrude into our business community and rule us. So, you have two options: either you choose your love or your company."
I had no option but to believe in his words, as I could see the head of our guild follow Joseph into the room. He handed over a notice to me. He flashed the light on the notice so that I could read it. The notice had the same contents as Joseph had already mentioned.
"You all are cowards, and that is the reason you have to follow such cheap methods to coax me to do what you desire." I wanted to spit on their faces for their behaviour, but then I thought of handling the situation diplomatically so that I could at least escape from their clutches.
"But then I have built my company with great efforts, and I would not like to be banished from the business, so I will accept your proposal. Tell me what I will have to do."
"Tomorrow, early in the morning, you will be freed from your chains, and you will be allowed to use your phone just to give Ben a call asking him to arrive at this location. As he arrives, we will arrange to trap him and then behead him thereafter. I have called the famous wizard Doyle Stalin for controlling him in case he becomes rebellious." Joseph said as he breathed out loud.
"If you know that he is a vampire, then you must be aware that he might have supernatural powers. He might defeat all of us effortlessly. You are just digging potholes into which you yourselves will fall. Try to use your wisdom, Joseph." I said it sarcastically.
"Don't worry about that, Anne; we have a full-proof plan, and we are ready to execute it." As he said this, I could sense that he was hiding something from me.
"You know what, Anne? I still have a proposal for you to escape from all the troubles that you are facing. You are so hot and beautiful." He continued saying as he touched my body with his cane and then ended up inserting it inside my neckline. I wished that my hands were set free for a moment, and I would have slapped him so hard that he would never dare to tease a girl again in the future. But I felt helpless.
"Just marry me. I am ten times wealthier than you. What if you are more successful currently? I am a third-generation businessman, and I own many multi-storied buildings like this one. You will live like a queen. Don't ruin your precious beauty and youth with that useless vampire. He will give you nothing but pain. He had already fled when he saw you in danger. He is a coward, Anne." He kept moving his cane slowly between my cleavages as he said this, and I got so furious by his behaviour that I ended up spitting on his face.
"Keep her chained for the night and tell our lady servant to feed her the meals. Otherwise, she might try to escape." He left after giving instructions to his servants, as he felt insulted.
It was night time already, and I was still chained to the poles. I had such excruciating pain in my wrist and arms, as they were severely bruised and injured. Blood had clotted at several places in my arm, and I was smelling horrible. I wished that Ben was around, and he healed me with his magic.
I remembered that he had healed me earlier on several occasions, as if by magic, but then I failed to recognise his supernatural powers at that time as he kept me hypnotized. There was something in his eyes-some magic-that made me forget the whole world, and I used to get immersed in them.
His very thoughts helped me get distracted from the pain, and I further got lost in his thoughts. I was regretting having been saved by Estella. It was better that I had died than to face this situation, I thought. I loved Ben from the core of my heart. How could I get him beheaded? But why was he not returning? Where did he vanish? He used to sense it always when I was in difficulty. But then what was it that prevented it from doing so this time?
I was a little upset with his lie, but that doesn't mean I hated him. I still remember the day of the interview when I first met him. While I was lost in my thoughts, I overheard the guards discussing among themselves, "You know what? Joseph sir has deliberately given Anne Madam the cuts, and he is further planning to give her more injuries so that she keeps bleeding, and when the vampire arrives, he will be triggered by the blood and might end up killing her. Sir's greatest opponent will thereby be removed from his path! What a plan he has thought of!"
I was filled with contempt for Joseph. I felt like piercing a dagger across his chest. But there was very little I could do, and I felt extremely helpless. I just wriggled and tried to pull my hands off the chains. But it was of no avail.
My thoughts drifted towards Ben again. The only thing that made me hate him was that he killed my best friend, Lily. Otherwise, I would have forgiven him for lying to me. He was speaking of his mom in the hospital, but he had never mentioned any of his relatives earlier. He told me that he was an orphan. I tried to recall how I came across him and how we fell in love with each other.
It was two years ago.
I was just getting breathless looking at my schedule for the day as my personal secretary, Lily, read it out to me. "Meetings after meetings the whole day-I can't just manage it anymore, Lily. Could you please cut short on some of them if it is adjustable for the next day?" I exclaimed as the schedule seemed too unmanageable for a single day.
"I understand, Lily, that as the founder and CEO of my company, Franks Automobiles Pvt Ltd., which has cost me sweat and blood to be in the position in which it is today, companies from all over the world are desirous of getting a deal with that of mine. I am not supposed to make excuses, and I ought to be strong to handle the cumbersome task of maintaining its position. As I take pride in uttering these words, my mind and body are still not in a condition to handle the backbreaking work, and I crave a break." I said it in a frustrating manner.
"All the meetings are equally important for the day, ma'am, or else we might miss out on some important deals, and our company might incur huge losses due to the same," said Lily in a single breath.
"I just wish that our MD had not resigned and joined our opponent company. He was simply too efficient, and he used to handle a lot of work. A great part of the credit for making our company rise goes to him." I said it with a grump.
"That is the reason that our opponent company just induced him to resign from our company and employed him by offering a higher salary than what he was getting over here." said Lily
"Lily, let's conduct an interview for the post of MD. The whole month was indeed too hectic for me without an MD. I thought that I would manage without an MD, and out of ego, I thought of managing everything myself, but now I realise that I was wrong." I said this as I finally decided to conduct the interview the very next day.
"But how will we advertise everywhere in a single day, ma'am? It is not possible to conduct the interview tomorrow.' Said Lily.
"You must manage it at any cost, Lily. I don't want to listen to any excuses. Spend as much money as required, but the interview should be held tomorrow itself." I said it in an adamant manner.
Lily just sighed and left the cabin, getting quite confused, but she didn't say a word as she knew that I wouldn't listen. I had been too impulsive throughout my life. But then, most of my decisions had never proved to be wrong, even when taken in an impulsive manner.
I struggled through my day through all my meetings, and then Lily came with a bunch of papers to be signed.
´Ma'am, I have managed to post the advertisements on the newspapers, internet, and even television channels. I just hope we get efficient candidates at the interview." Lily said as I immersed myself in the bunch of papers, signing them as quickly as possible.
"Lily, I have all the money in this world, sufficient to buy the most expensive things in this world, but then I have no peace of mind, and I am missing out on the real happiness of life. I have nobody with whom I can share my feelings. My parents passed away when I was just too young."
"I wish you find your life partner very soon, Ma'am," but for that, you will have to focus on finding one for you. You are just too professional to do that. Just for a day, forget that you are a successful business lady and try to act like a normal girl who is in search of her mate. I am sure you will get attracted to somebody and succeed in finding one out for you." Lily tried to explain it to me, as she has seen me for the past seven years and has been my personal secretary ever since I established my company.
Lily was my childhood friend, apart from being my personal secretary. She had seen me through the highs and the lows and supported me in all difficult times. That is the reason that there was more friendly behaviour between us than between an employer and an employee.
I was just too young when my parents passed away, and then My only aunt, who brought me up, got a cardiac arrest a couple of years ago, and so I was left all alone in this world. I struggled through my days when I had to suffer a financial crunch after my parents' demise. My aunt, who was single, earned just enough for her living.
She somehow managed to get me educated at a good school and then a university. I got a scholarship at my school and at my graduation. I did my MBA by doing a part-time job so that I could pay my fees. These days of struggle taught me the importance of money in my life.
That is the reason that I started giving undue importance to earning money, success, and fame, but in the race that ensued, I just forgot about all the worldly pleasures, joy, and happiness. I became a hard-core workaholic and got submerged in the whirlpool.
"I will try to follow your advice, Lily. I hope I come across some dashing young guy in the interview tomorrow who can steal my heart." Said I
