Chapter 1 The Beginning

Love Alarm

The morning sun bathed Kingswell High School in a soft, golden glow, casting shadows along the well-worn paths that students knew all too well. It was the first day of senior year, but for Edward Collins, the excitement that filled the air seemed like just another fleeting moment in the monotony of high school life. As the son of one of the wealthiest families in town, he was used to having all eyes on him-his popularity ensured that-but none of it really mattered to him anymore. The parties, the girls, the endless expectations-it all felt hollow.

Standing at his locker, Edward exchanged half-hearted jokes with his best friend, Jason. They'd been inseparable since middle school, their bond forged through shared experiences of growing up in the spotlight. Jason, ever the life of the party, flashed his trademark grin as he rambled about the wild summer they'd just had.

"So, are we going to kick off senior year with a bang or what?" Jason asked, nudging Edward playfully. "I'm thinking we host a party this weekend. You know, something big to let everyone know we're back."

Edward gave a noncommittal shrug, his mind wandering. Just as Jason was about to launch into more party plans, something caught Edward's eye-a girl, walking through the hallway, completely unnoticed by the usual crowd.

She had long, dark hair that cascaded down her back in loose waves, and she wore a simple, oversized sweater that didn't quite fit in with the more polished looks of Kingswell's student body. There was something about her presence, though, that stood out to Edward. She didn't look nervous or shy, but there was an undeniable air of mystery around her-like she was trying to keep the world at a distance.

"Who's that?" Edward asked, his gaze lingering on the girl as she walked past them, her head down and her steps quick.

Jason followed his line of sight and smirked. "Oh, her? That's the new girl-Mabel Kingston. Just transferred here from somewhere up north, I think. She's been flying under the radar since the semester started."

"Mabel," Edward repeated quietly. The name suited her somehow-soft but with an edge. He watched as she slipped through the crowd like a ghost, unnoticed by everyone around her.

"You should go talk to her," Jason teased, nudging him again. "Might be fun to introduce yourself. Mr. Popular doing his good deed for the day."

Edward chuckled, but there was a tug of curiosity in his chest that he couldn't ignore. Normally, he wouldn't have bothered, but something about Mabel drew him in. She wasn't like the other girls at Kingswell-the ones who knew all the right people and flaunted their connections. Mabel seemed different, and Edward wanted to know why.

He closed his locker and turned to Jason. "I'll catch up with you later. I think I'll go say hi."

Jason gave him a knowing grin. "Good luck, man. I'll see you in class."

Edward wove through the crowded hallway, his heart pounding a little faster than usual. He wasn't nervous, but there was an edge of anticipation that he hadn't felt in a long time. As he approached Mabel, he saw her stop at a locker near the end of the hall. She fumbled with the lock for a moment before finally getting it open.

"Hey," Edward said, keeping his tone casual. "You're new here, right? I'm Edward."

Mabel looked up, startled by his sudden approach. For a moment, her hazel eyes met his, and in that brief second, Edward felt like he could see something-pain, maybe, or fear-but then it was gone. She quickly averted her gaze, her voice quiet and unsure.

"Yeah. I'm Mabel," she said, her hands still fiddling with the books in her locker.

Edward leaned against the lockers, trying to put her at ease. "How are you finding Kingswell so far? It's a bit overwhelming, right? I remember my first day here felt like I was walking into a whole new world."

Mabel hesitated before responding. "It's... fine. Just different, I guess."

"Different how?" Edward asked, genuinely curious now. He noticed how she kept her answers short, like she didn't want to reveal too much.

"It's bigger than my last school. A lot bigger," she replied, glancing up at him briefly. Her tone was neutral, but Edward could sense there was more to her story than she was letting on.

Before Edward could ask more, the bell rang, signaling the start of first period. Mabel quickly grabbed her books, muttering, "I've got to get to class," before rushing off without another word.

Edward watched her disappear into the crowd, a frown tugging at his lips. There was definitely something about her-something hidden behind that quiet demeanor. Jason's words echoed in his head: Might be fun to introduce yourself. But this didn't feel like fun anymore. It felt like the beginning of something he couldn't quite place yet.

---

The rest of the day passed in a blur, with Edward's thoughts constantly drifting back to Mabel. During lunch, he sat with Jason and the rest of their usual group, but he found himself distracted, scanning the cafeteria for any sign of her.

Jason, ever the social butterfly, was in the middle of recounting a story about their summer adventures when he noticed Edward's lack of attention. "You're thinking about her, aren't you?" he teased, nudging him with his elbow.

"Who?" Edward asked, playing dumb, though he knew exactly who Jason was talking about.

"Mabel. The new girl. Dude, you've been spacing out since you talked to her."

Edward shrugged, trying to act casual. "I don't know, man. She's just... different."

Jason raised an eyebrow. "Different how? She's cute, sure, but she doesn't seem like your type."

Edward thought about it for a moment. Jason wasn't wrong-Mabel wasn't the kind of girl he usually went for. She wasn't flashy, didn't care about popularity or fitting in with the crowd. But that's what intrigued him. There was something real about her, something raw and unpolished.

"She's just... interesting," Edward finally said, though the word didn't quite capture what he was feeling.

Jason smirked. "Well, good luck with that, man. I've got my eye on Sarah from biology class. Maybe you'll have your little love story while I work on mine."

Edward laughed, shaking his head. "It's not like that."

---

Later that evening, Edward sat in his room, staring out the window at the city lights in the distance. His house-if it could even be called that-was more like a mansion, with sprawling gardens, marble floors, and more rooms than he could count. But despite all the luxury, it always felt empty. His father, Henry Collins, was rarely home, always off managing his tech empire. His mother, Clarissa, filled her days with charity galas and shopping trips, barely acknowledging Edward's existence.

The only company he had was the silence that filled the halls.

Edward's thoughts drifted back to Mabel, to the way she'd looked at him in that brief moment in the hallway. There was something there-something she wasn't saying. And for the first time in a long time, Edward felt a spark of excitement, like he was on the verge of uncovering a mystery.

Across town, in a cramped apartment, Mabel sat on her bed, staring at the small, framed photo of her and her brother, David. The picture was from years ago, before everything had fallen apart. Before they had to run.

David had warned her to keep a low profile, to stay out of trouble. But Edward Collins wasn't someone she could just ignore. He was popular, charming, and everything she needed to avoid.

But the way he'd looked at her-it made her feel seen in a way she hadn't felt in a long time. And as much as she wanted to stay invisible, she knew that staying away from Edward Collins was going to be harder than she thought.

Chapter 2 Hidden Secrets

Love Alarm

The next day at Kingswell High, Edward Collins found himself more distracted than usual. His mind kept drifting back to the fleeting encounter he had with Mabel the day before. Despite her efforts to blend in, she was impossible to ignore. That spark of curiosity was burning brighter now, and he couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to her than met the eye.

Edward strolled into first-period chemistry, finding his usual spot next to Jason. The room buzzed with the usual chatter of students catching up after the summer, but Edward's gaze kept scanning the doorway, waiting for Mabel to appear. She didn't.

"Still thinking about her?" Jason asked with a knowing grin.

Edward shot him a look but said nothing. He couldn't deny it, though. He was intrigued, and not just because Mabel was new. There was something about the way she had looked at him-just for a split second, but it was enough to make him wonder what was going on beneath the surface.

As class droned on, Edward's mind wandered. He thought about the last time someone had caught his attention like this, but no one had. Not in this way. His usual relationships had been fleeting-girls who were interested in him for his name, his money, or his looks. But Mabel didn't seem to care about any of that. She hadn't even seemed to recognize him.

---

Mabel's Morning

Across town, Mabel Kingston stood in front of her mirror, trying to steady her nerves. She didn't want to go back to Kingswell, but skipping wasn't an option. Her brother, David, had made it clear that they needed to maintain a low profile, and disappearing would only draw attention.

She glanced at her reflection-her tired eyes, her plain clothes. She could still feel the weight of Edward Collins' gaze on her from the day before. The way he had spoken to her, the curiosity in his voice-it unsettled her. She couldn't afford to get involved with anyone, least of all someone like Edward.

Her brother's voice echoed in her mind, stern and protective. "You can't trust anyone, Mabel. We've made it this far because we've kept our distance. Stay under the radar, don't make friends, and whatever you do, don't get attached."

Mabel sighed, grabbing her backpack. She didn't need the reminder-she knew what was at stake. But there was something about Edward that made her feel... seen. And that scared her more than anything.

---

Back at school, Edward's day dragged on, his attention slipping in and out of conversations and classes. By lunchtime, he was restless. He hadn't seen Mabel all morning, and a part of him wondered if she was avoiding him. It wouldn't have surprised him, considering how she'd rushed off yesterday.

As he sat in the cafeteria with Jason and the rest of their group, the usual noise and chaos filled the room. Jason was deep into a conversation about their weekend plans, but Edward's mind was elsewhere. He finally spotted Mabel, sitting alone at a table by the window, her nose buried in a book. She looked so... detached from everything around her.

Before he could second-guess himself, Edward stood up. Jason looked at him curiously. "Where are you going?"

"Just need to check something," Edward replied, brushing off the question. He grabbed his tray and made his way over to Mabel's table.

Mabel didn't look up as he approached, too absorbed in her book. Edward cleared his throat, causing her to glance up in surprise.

"Hey," Edward said, offering a small smile. "Mind if I sit?"

Mabel hesitated, her eyes flickering with uncertainty, but she nodded. Edward sat down across from her, setting his tray on the table.

"You weren't in chemistry this morning," he said casually, trying to keep the conversation light.

Mabel shifted uncomfortably, her fingers tracing the edge of her book. "I had some stuff to take care of."

Edward nodded, sensing that she didn't want to elaborate. "Look, I know we don't really know each other, but I wanted to see if you're okay. You seemed... I don't know, upset yesterday."

Mabel's eyes widened slightly, and she looked down at her hands. "I'm fine," she said quickly, her voice tight. "I just... have a lot going on."

Edward leaned forward, his curiosity piqued even more. "Like what?"

Mabel tensed, and for a moment, Edward thought she was going to shut him out completely. But then she sighed, a heavy, tired sound. "It's complicated," she said quietly. "You wouldn't understand."

"Try me," Edward replied gently. He could see the conflict in her eyes, like she wanted to open up but was afraid to.

Mabel glanced around the cafeteria, her gaze darting to the familiar faces of Kingswell's students. She knew they were all watching, even if they pretended not to. Edward Collins was talking to the new girl-the one no one knew. It was bound to raise eyebrows.

"I really don't want to talk about it here," Mabel finally said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Edward nodded, understanding. "Fair enough. How about we talk after school? We can go somewhere quiet. No pressure."

Mabel hesitated again, but something in Edward's tone made her trust him, just a little. She gave a small nod. "Okay."

---

The Meeting After School

That afternoon, Edward found himself waiting by the school gates, watching as students poured out of the building. He leaned against the fence, checking his phone and glancing up every few seconds to see if Mabel had shown up. He wasn't sure she would. He didn't know her well enough to predict what she might do, but he hoped she wouldn't back out.

Just as he was about to give up, he saw her walking toward him, her steps hesitant but deliberate. She had changed into a simple black hoodie, her hair pulled back into a messy ponytail.

"You came," Edward said, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.

Mabel shrugged. "I said I would."

"Come on," Edward said, nodding toward the parking lot. "Let's go somewhere we can talk."

They walked in silence to Edward's car, a sleek, black convertible that screamed wealth. Mabel hesitated before getting in, but Edward's relaxed demeanor made her feel slightly more at ease. They drove in silence for a while, the only sound the hum of the engine and the occasional beep from Edward's phone.

After about fifteen minutes, Edward pulled up to a small park on the edge of town. It was quiet, with only a few people walking their dogs or jogging along the path. Edward parked the car and turned to Mabel.

"This place is pretty peaceful," he said. "We can talk here."

Mabel stepped out of the car, her heart pounding in her chest. She wasn't sure why she had agreed to come with him, why she felt this strange sense of trust with him. But now that she was here, she knew she couldn't back out.

They found a bench under a large oak tree, and Edward sat down, gesturing for Mabel to do the same. She hesitated before sitting next to him, her hands fidgeting nervously in her lap.

"So," Edward said after a moment of silence. "What's going on, Mabel? Why are you so afraid?"

Mabel bit her lip, her mind racing. She had never talked about this with anyone-had never even considered it. But there was something about Edward, something in the way he looked at her, that made her want to trust him.

"I've been running," she said quietly, her voice barely audible. "From my past. From things I can't escape."

Edward's eyes softened, his curiosity tempered with concern. "Running from what?"

Mabel hesitated, her hands shaking slightly. She couldn't tell him everything-not yet. But she could give him a glimpse, just enough to keep him from asking too many questions.

"From someone dangerous," she finally said. "Someone who... who hurt my family."

Edward's heart clenched at her words. He could see the fear in her eyes, the way her body tensed as she spoke. He wanted to reach out, to comfort her, but he didn't want to scare her off.

"Who is it?" Edward asked softly. "Who's after you?"

Mabel shook her head. "I can't tell you that. I shouldn't have even said this much."

Edward leaned back, his mind racing. He didn't know what to say, didn't know how to make her feel safe. But one thing was clear-Mabel was in danger, and whatever was haunting her wasn't going away.

"I won't push you," Edward said after a long pause. "But if you ever need help, I'm here. You don't have to go through this alone."

Mabel looked at him, her hazel eyes filled with a mixture of fear and gratitude. "Thank you," she whispered.

For the first time in a long time, Mabel felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, she didn't have to face this all on her own.

Chapter 3 The Shadow of the Past

Love Alarm

The next few days at Kingswell High passed in a blur for Edward Collins. His focus was consumed by Mabel, who remained as elusive as ever, despite their brief conversation at the park. She still kept her distance, arriving late to class and leaving quickly at the end of the day. Edward watched her from afar, trying to piece together the fragments of her life that she had reluctantly shared with him.

It wasn't just curiosity anymore. Edward couldn't shake the feeling that Mabel was in real danger, and every instinct told him to help. But Mabel clearly didn't want to involve him. She was like a shadow-fading into the background, trying to stay unnoticed.

---

Meanwhile, Mabel Kingston was battling the storm inside her. The encounter with Edward had left her shaken. She had revealed more than she intended, and now the fear of someone finding out about her past weighed heavily on her. The problem wasn't just the dangerous man who was after her family; it was the secrets she carried, the truth she couldn't bear to tell anyone.

Her brother David had warned her over and over: Don't trust anyone. Keep your head down, stay out of sight, and don't make friends. But it was getting harder to do that, especially with Edward around.

Every day at school, she could feel his eyes on her, his unspoken questions hanging in the air between them. She couldn't afford to let him get too close, but she also couldn't deny the pull she felt toward him. He was different from anyone she'd ever met-kind, genuine, and for some reason, he seemed to care about her.

It wasn't long before the tension between them began to draw the attention of others.

---

On a rainy Wednesday afternoon, Edward found himself standing near his locker, lost in thought. He hadn't spoken to Mabel since their meeting at the park, and his frustration was growing. He couldn't get her out of his head, but she seemed determined to keep him at arm's length.

As he shut his locker, he was startled by a voice.

"Edward," Sherilyn's voice was soft but with an edge, as she sauntered up to him, twirling a strand of her sleek blonde hair between her fingers. Sherilyn Winters, the girl every guy at Kingswell admired-the queen bee of the school-had her sights set on Edward since sophomore year.

"Hey, Sherilyn," Edward replied, trying to sound casual, but he could already feel the weight of her attention pressing down on him.

"You've been distant lately." Her blue eyes narrowed as she tilted her head, her voice carrying a hint of accusation. "Ever since that new girl showed up, it's like you've forgotten we exist."

Edward tensed, knowing exactly where this conversation was heading. Sherilyn had never been subtle about her interest in him, and while they had flirted in the past, Edward had never seen her as anything more than a friend. But Sherilyn wasn't the type to give up easily.

"What's her deal anyway?" Sherilyn continued, her voice dripping with disdain. "She's weird, always disappearing, never talking to anyone. You're way too good for someone like her."

Edward's jaw clenched. "That's not your call to make, Sherilyn."

Sherilyn's eyes flashed with irritation, but she quickly composed herself, plastering on a sweet smile. "I just don't want you getting mixed up with the wrong crowd, Eddie. You deserve someone who's on your level."

Before Edward could respond, the conversation was interrupted by Jason, who appeared beside him, holding a basketball. "Yo, Ed, we're heading to the gym for some practice. You in?"

Edward hesitated, glancing from Sherilyn to Jason. "Yeah, I'll catch up with you later."

Sherilyn's face fell slightly, but she forced a smile. "Don't forget our study session tomorrow." She turned on her heel and walked away, her confidence never wavering.

Jason grinned as they walked toward the gym. "Dude, Sherilyn's not gonna give up, is she?"

Edward sighed. "She's just being... Sherilyn."

Jason raised an eyebrow. "You know she's gunning for you, right? You better be careful, especially now that you've got your eyes on Mabel."

Edward shot him a look. "I'm not 'gunning' for anyone. I just... I don't know, Jason. There's something going on with Mabel, and I want to help her."

Jason nodded slowly. "Yeah, man, but Sherilyn's not gonna take kindly to that. You've been her 'project' for a while now."

Edward groaned inwardly. He didn't need this right now. Mabel's problems were already complicated enough, and the last thing he needed was Sherilyn getting involved.

---

That evening, as Mabel walked home, the rain pouring down in sheets around her, she pulled her hood tighter over her head, trying to stay dry. Her thoughts raced. Edward was getting too close, and Sherilyn's jealousy wasn't going to make things any easier. She knew how girls like Sherilyn operated-she had seen it all before.

Just as Mabel rounded the corner to her house, she heard footsteps behind her. Her heart raced, and she quickened her pace. The footsteps followed, getting closer. Panic surged through her as she darted down an alleyway, hoping to lose whoever was following her.

But the footsteps didn't stop. They were right behind her now, and she could hear the sound of heavy breathing. Mabel's pulse thundered in her ears as she turned sharply, ducking behind a dumpster to catch her breath.

A figure appeared at the mouth of the alley, drenched in rain, and Mabel's fear spiked. She knew this wasn't just some random person. It was him-the man who had been hunting her and her family. The one who had torn their lives apart.

Her mind raced, searching for a way out. She couldn't run forever, and there was no one around to help. She was trapped.

Just as the figure took a step forward, something miraculous happened.

"Hey!" A voice echoed through the alley, cutting through the rain. Edward appeared, running toward her. His eyes were wide with alarm, but his determination was clear.

The figure hesitated, glancing between Mabel and Edward, before turning and disappearing into the shadows.

Edward skidded to a stop beside Mabel, panting heavily. "Are you okay? What the hell just happened?"

Mabel's chest heaved as she struggled to catch her breath. She stared at the spot where the figure had vanished, her mind reeling.

"I... I don't know," she lied, her voice shaking. She couldn't tell him the truth-not yet.

Edward frowned, his concern deepening. "Mabel, I don't know what's going on, but I'm not going to let you deal with this alone. I'm here, okay? Whatever it is, I'm here."

Mabel felt a lump form in her throat. No one had ever said that to her before. She had always been the one to protect herself, the one to run. But Edward's words, his presence-they made her feel safe, even if just for a moment.

She nodded slowly, though the fear in her eyes remained. "Thank you," she whispered, barely audible over the rain.

---

As Edward walked Mabel home, he couldn't shake the feeling that something much bigger was happening-something far more dangerous than he had ever imagined. He didn't know who that man was or why Mabel was so terrified, but one thing was clear: Mabel wasn't just running from her past. She was running from someone who wanted to hurt her.

And now, Edward was involved.

Mabel, on the other hand, was torn. She wanted to trust Edward, but she knew that doing so would only put him in danger. The man chasing her wouldn't stop until he got what he wanted, and anyone who stood in his way would be collateral damage.

As they reached Mabel's house, Edward turned to her, his eyes filled with determination. "Whatever's going on, we'll figure it out together."

Mabel forced a smile, but inside, she was screaming. She knew she couldn't afford to drag Edward into her mess. But as she looked into his eyes, she realized that she might not have a choice.

Because no matter how hard she tried to push him away, Edward Collins wasn't going anywhere.
