Chapter 1 The meeting

The sun hung high above, casting an oppressive, merciless glare across the bustling city. The air shimmered with heat, thick and suffocating, as if the very atmosphere had absorbed the relentless rays and was now exhaling them back with no relief. The heat had seeped into every corner of the day, turning the normal sounds of the city, honking cars, chattering pedestrians, the distant hum of machinery, into a monotonous backdrop to the sweltering air.

The traffic was heavier than usual, with cars inching forward in the standstill, their engines groaning under the strain of the sun's energy, windows rolled down to allow a faint breeze that barely cooled the air.

Sophia, a young woman from a modest background, grew up in a loving, working-class family. Her parents worked tirelessly to provide for her, despite not being wealthy. This grounded upbringing instilled in Sophia a strong sense of independence, resourcefulness, and humility. Encouraged to stand on her own, she developed remarkable resilience and self-sufficiency.

She carried her documents in a file in one hand and her new piece of artwork in the other. A painting that depicts a solitary figure standing at the edge of a vast, darkened ocean, the sky swirling with heavy, storm-laden clouds. The figure's silhouette is barely visible, shrouded in a cloak of shadow, yet their posture is unmistakably one of contemplation. The crashing waves mirror the turmoil within, each wave reaching desperately towards the shore, as if trying to pull the figure back into the abyss. The contrast between the darkness of the ocean and the faint light from a distant horizon speaks of hope and despair intertwined, of a journey unfinished, where the promise of peace lies just beyond reach but never quite attainable. The painting captures a moment of quiet reckoning, a soul caught between the weight of the past and the uncertainty of the future, reflecting the universal struggle of finding one's way through life's storms.

She was on her way to an interview at a local art gallery, her face flushed from the harsh weather as she waited, barely able to keep her impatience in check, for the cab she had booked to arrive. It seemed like an unlucky day for her; she had nearly woken up late for her appointment at the gallery. The cab's arrival felt like it was taking forever. She was exhausted and drenched in sweat, and the discomfort was becoming unbearable. Desperate for a way out of the misery, she realized she was severely dehydrated and needed water. Spotting a nearby restaurant, she decided to step inside to refresh herself.

She walked slowly, as though her legs were being dragged along. Raising her left arm above her head, she used the file in her hand to shield her face from the harsh sun. She entered the restaurant and made her way to the nearest booth, slipping into it effortlessly, like a hot knife through butter. She placed both her file and the painting beside her, then bent forward, resting her head flat on the table with a sigh of relief. In that moment, she felt a deep sense of comfort and relaxation. For a brief instant, it was as if the world had paused, no movement, no sound, nothing, until her moment of silence was broken by the soft voice of the waitress standing beside her, asking for her order.

As she lifted her head to respond to the waitress, she noticed an unfamiliar expression a few tables away-an intense, yet charming gaze. Although it was somewhat alarming, the gentle smile on his face was irresistible. She smiled back, trying to look away and focus on the waitress. She expected him to turn his face away, but he seemed to hold the gaze, unbroken, like a missile locked onto its target. This time, she found herself lost in his stare, her mind wandering as she wondered if there was something about her that made him so focused on her.

Her thoughts were interrupted again by the waitress. "Your order, please?" Startled, she snapped out of her reverie, silently apologizing to herself.

"I'm sorry..." Before she could finish, she glanced around to see if he was still watching her. To her surprise, he was gone. A sudden wave of unease and fear washed over her as she scanned the room, the waitress noticing her distress. "Is something wrong?" she asked.

"I'm fine, it's nothing serious. I thought I saw something or someone," she replied, her voice barely steady. "I'll have a cup of ice cream, thank you."

She couldn't shake off the unease, her concern for her safety lingering as she kept scanning the room, hoping to spot him again. When the waitress returned with her order, she was momentarily distracted. But as she looked up once more, there he was-back at his seat. A mix of relief and confusion washed over her. His sudden disappearance and reappearance baffled her. There's something mysterious about this man,she thought to herself. His charming smile and unwavering gaze unsettled her in ways she couldn't quite understand.

She lowered her gaze to focus on her ice cream when the sound of approaching footsteps made her freeze. Slowly raising her head, she was met with his face, now adorned with an even brighter smile. At that moment, she didn't know how to react to the presence of this enigmatic stranger.

"Hello, how are you doing today?" he said, stopping near her table and waiting patiently for her reply. For a moment, she was silent, as if the words were stuck in her throat. Finally, she responded, almost as though she'd been holding her breath. "I'm great, thank you," she said nervously.

"May I?" he asked, gesturing to the seat across from her in the booth.

"Sure," she replied, her voice barely steady. He sat down, his smile unwavering, as if it were etched permanently onto his face.

"I'm sorry if I startled you," he began, his voice calm and gentle. "Or if the way I was looking at you made you uncomfortable. But it was impossible for me to look away from a perfect creation like you."

He paused, waiting for her response. Her cheeks flushed crimson, and she struggled to hold back a smile. Finally, she managed to reply, "Thank you... you're not so bad yourself." She smiled shyly, the tension in her chest loosening.

"But I have to admit, I was scared for a moment," she continued. "How did you do that?"

"Do what?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.

"The disappearing and reappearing act," she said with a hint of humor. "Almost like a magician."

He chuckled softly and leaned back in his seat. "Ah, that," he said with a playful smile. "Let's just say it's a trick that's been passed down through generations in my family."

"My name is Julian..." he began, but before he could finish, she cut in, "And I'm Sophia."

"Wow, that's a beautiful name for a beautiful woman," he said, his smile widening. "It reminds me of a book I read recently about a princess named Sophia." He paused, watching her expression, noticing the way she seemed fully engaged, her curiosity evident. Sensing her interest, he continued, "It was about a journey of self-discovery and finding true love. I just wish my journey could be like hers, and I'd find my true love too. I'd love to be the prince charming in this Sophia's story."

His words carried a subtle flirtation that didn't escape her. She smiled softly but chose to remain silent.

"What do you have there?" he asked, gesturing toward the file and the professionally wrapped artwork beside her.

"Oh! I almost forgot-my appointment!" she exclaimed, suddenly flustered as she remembered why she was there. A wave of unease swept over her. "I'm so sorry, but I have to go. Maybe we'll meet again."

Before she could leave, Julian spoke up. "Let me give you a lift," he offered. "I can take you wherever you're heading." She hesitated for a moment but, realizing she didn't have time to wait for her cab, reluctantly accepted his offer.

The car ride to the gallery was quiet, neither of them saying much. When they arrived, just as she was about to step out of the car, he asked, "Can I have your number? To keep in touch and, maybe, be friends?"

Hurriedly, she typed her contact information into his phone, thanked him, and made her way hastily into the gallery.

Chapter 2 The Beginning of Something Special

After several meetings in both private and public settings, their bond grew stronger. They spent most of their free time together after work, and their happiness was palpable. Julian would send her flowers and love letters to her office, take her out to dinner, and visit luxurious places with her. Their early days were filled with excitement and joy. Sophia began to develop deep feelings for him-feelings that left her unhappy on days they couldn't meet. She felt lonely and irritable around others when he wasn't there. Julian seemed like the kind of man she had always dreamed of.

This was her first relationship, and she felt deeply connected to him. Having always been so focused on her career and personal goals, she was surprised to find herself thinking about him constantly. Memories of their time together brought a smile to her face, even during the most mundane moments of her day.

Life with Julian felt like a paradise he had built for her, and every moment they spent together was precious. They would talk on the phone during work hours, have video and audio calls, and exchange countless love texts. These gestures made her feelings for him grow stronger every day.

One fateful evening, after finishing work, she waited at their usual meeting spot for Julian to pick her up. But this time, he didn't arrive at his usual time. She grew worried and decided to call him to remind him, especially since she had spoken to him an hour earlier, and he had assured her he was already on his way.

She called him repeatedly, but after five unanswered calls, her concern turned into panic. She realized she didn't know any of Julian's family members or friends to reach out to. Thoughts of calling the police crossed her mind, but it hadn't been 24 hours yet. Her chest tightened as her worry grew, and she felt helpless. She sank into her chair, tears streaming down her face, consumed by a flood of negative thoughts. Julian had never ignored her calls like this before, and it was completely out of character for him.

The evening grew later, and Sophia remained seated at the bus stop where Julian always picked her up. Her legs were trembling, and she couldn't summon the courage to leave. As she sobbed quietly, she kept wiping tears from her face, still trying to call him but receiving no response. The pain in her chest felt like a dagger being driven into her heart.

Just as she was about to lose hope, her phone vibrated in her purse. She quickly pulled it out to check the caller ID. It was an unfamiliar number. Her heart pounded as she hesitated, wondering who it could be. Given the circumstances, she decided to answer, hoping for news about Julian.

"Hello?" the caller said, their voice calm but unsettling.

Sophia's voice trembled as she responded, "Hello? Who's this?"

The voice on the other end replied, eerily composed, "Sophia, right? Julian's girlfriend?"

She frowned, her unease growing. "Yes... Who is this? And how do you know Julian?"

"Let's just say I have Julian with me," the caller said. "He's... safe for now."

Sophia's heart raced. "What are you talking about? What do you mean 'safe'? Where is he?"

"Calm down," the voice replied. "I said he's safe for now. Whether he stays that way depends on you."

Her voice shook with fear. "What do you want? Please, just tell me where he is!"

"I'll tell you," the caller said, "but you must come alone. No police, no friends, no family. If you tell anyone, you'll regret it-and so will Julian."

Sophia's panic grew. "Wait! You can't just expect me to-please, just let me talk to him!"

The caller chuckled darkly. "You're not in a position to make demands. Here's what you'll do. There's an old house on Desmian Street. Be there tonight, alone, at 8 PM. If you're even a minute late..." The voice paused ominously. "Well, let's just say you'll lose more than just a boyfriend."

Tears streamed down her face as she pleaded, "Why are you doing this? What do you want from me?"

"You'll find out soon enough," the caller replied coldly. "Just be there. And remember-alone. No one else knows, or you'll regret it."

"Wait! Don't hang up!" Sophia cried.

But the line clicked, and the call ended.

She whispered to herself, trembling with fear, "Oh my God... Julian..."

Though terrified and confused, Sophia forced herself to prepare for the meeting. Her mind raced with questions, but she was determined to do whatever it took to save Julian. Time was running out, and she hurriedly made her way to the location the caller had given her.

When she arrived, the place was dark and eerily silent, as quiet as a graveyard. She tried calling the number again, but this time, it was unreachable-both Julian and the caller. Her worry deepened, and she felt as if the world were collapsing around her. Overcome with unease, she broke down in tears once more.

Instead of another call, she received a text. It contained navigation instructions to enter the building and a strict warning not to call either number. It also advised her to use a flashlight to find her way. Knowing Julian's life was at stake, she followed the instructions carefully, her determination outweighing her fear.

Inside the building, it was pitch-black, and the faint light that slipped through the slightly ajar window barely illuminated the room. The silence was deafening, and the air smelled old and musty, as though the place had been abandoned for years. Step by step, she moved forward, opening doors and following the directions from the text.

After several turns and corridors, something felt different. The air changed, and the musty odor was replaced by the tantalizing aroma of freshly cooked food-pastries and other warm scents. The atmosphere seemed entirely out of place, as if this part of the house were part of a lively restaurant.

Confused and intrigued, she continued forward, wondering what lay ahead. Suddenly, amidst the darkness, she felt a gentle tug at her waist. Before she could react, voices echoed around her, breaking the silence.

"Surprise!" they shouted as the lights flickered on. The room was beautifully decorated with romantic touches, and at the center was a banner that read, Happy Birthday, My Princess Sophia.

It was a surprise birthday party, meticulously planned by Julian to celebrate her special day. The sight of him melted her heart, and the weight of her earlier fear dissolved like water rushing down a stream. In that moment, nothing else mattered-not the decorations, not the guests, only Julian.

Overwhelmed with emotion, she ran to him, wrapping her arms tightly around his body as if letting go were impossible. Tears streamed down her face as she sobbed uncontrollably, her cheeks flushed red. Finally, she managed to speak through her tears.

"I thought I lost you. This... this is too much."

Julian held her close, his voice gentle. "I'm so sorry for putting you through all of that..."

"It's okay," she interrupted, still clinging to him. "But please, don't ever do something like this again, babe."

He kissed her forehead softly. "I promise. I just wanted to surprise you. You work so hard and always forget your own special day. I wanted to remind you how much you mean to me."

Tears still glistening in her eyes, she looked up at him and smiled. "I already feel special. Having you as my man makes me feel loved and lucky. That's enough for me. I love you."

Julian smiled, his voice filled with warmth. "I love you too, my princess. Now and always."

"Now, let's enjoy the party," Julian said, and together they walked hand in hand to thank the guests for attending. This time, Sophia wore a bright smile on her face.

Curious, she asked, "The caller... who was it? He played that part so well-it felt so real. Can I meet him?"

"Of course," Julian replied with a grin. "He's right over there in the corner, having the time of his life."

When they approached him, Sophia playfully raised her hand, pretending to smack him. "You scared me!" she said with a teasing smile.

"I'm sorry, ma'am," he replied with a chuckle. "It wasn't entirely my idea."

They both laughed, and Sophia told him to enjoy the party. The rest of the night was filled with dancing, laughter, and celebration as they all made merry together.

Chapter 3 Secrets Unspoken

Julian grew up in a fractured household. His father, a successful yet emotionally distant businessman, showed little interest in his life, while his mother's overprotective and suffocating love left him feeling trapped. This dynamic left Julian emotionally scarred, torn between a desperate need for love and a fear of vulnerability. His father's neglect drove him to seek validation elsewhere, while his mother's overwhelming affection made him resentful, creating a cycle of longing and self-sabotage in his relationships.

From a young age, Julian faced immense pressure to take over the family business-a role he neither wanted nor felt prepared for. Rebelling against these expectations, he sought escape through reckless behavior, partying, and fleeting relationships. Meeting Sophia marked his first true emotional connection, but his rebellion against his family's control only pushed him further into destructive habits, leaving him unable to fully embrace the love he shared with her.

Julian's insecurities made him question the authenticity of his relationship with Sophia. Could her love for him be real, or was she just passing time? These doubts, coupled with his fear of commitment, led him to secretly engage in casual flings and relationships with women who were merely stand-ins for the love he was too afraid to accept. Despite his mistakes, Julian genuinely loved Sophia and saw her as the only real connection he had ever experienced. However, his unresolved fears caused him to emotionally distance himself.

Over time, the constant calls and heartfelt messages he once shared with Sophia began to dwindle. He became increasingly unavailable during moments when she needed him the most-times when she was emotionally broken and desperate for his support. Text messages and calls went unanswered, leaving her hurt and confused. When confronted, Julian offered feeble excuses about being busy, while trying to compensate with gifts and apology letters. But what Sophia truly needed wasn't material things-it was his presence and emotional support.

Despite the changes, Sophia's loyalty to Julian remained steadfast. She held onto the memories of how he used to sing her to sleep, write her poems, and treat her like a princess. As these gestures faded away like the setting sun, she found herself longing for the man she had fallen in love with. Desperate to understand what had changed, she begged him to tell her if she had done something wrong. She retraced her steps, trying to find where she might have faltered, but found no answers.

Sophia remained devoted, even as her heart grew heavy with the weight of his absence. All she wanted was for him to be there-to show her the love and attention that had once made her feel like the center of his world.

It would have been easier for her if she knew someone close to Julian-someone who could speak to him on her behalf and help find a solution to the sudden change in his behavior. Julian, on the other hand, was grappling with feelings of insecurity, almost as if the relationship was suffocating him, and he felt the need for distance. Reflecting on how much time he had been investing in the relationship, he convinced himself that he had already proven his love for her-after all, she was his woman, and he knew how deeply she cared for him.

It wasn't that he no longer loved her, but lately, she seemed to be present in every aspect of his life, leaving him feeling overwhelmed. Seeking a way out, the only solution he could come up with was emotional distance. At the same time, he worried about appearing too involved in her affairs, as if he were possessive. Occasionally, guilt would creep in as he thought about how poorly he had been treating her, but his insecurities quickly took over, reinforcing his decision to maintain the distance he believed he needed.

The strain of his family relationships had deeply affected him, causing him to project the same energy he grew up with onto his relationship with Sophia. He could no longer sustain the long conversations, the frequent outings, or the thoughtful gestures he once offered her. It wasn't that he loved her any less; rather, he felt increasingly vulnerable, as though she had become his weakness. Julian had always prided himself on being impenetrable and unstoppable in his daily life. Growing up under the shadow of his father's business had taught him to be fierce and emotionally detached, caring little for how others felt as long as he could live his life on his own terms.

He often thought about changing, about being better in his relationships with others, but it felt as impossible as trying to live without air. His indifference to others' emotions was deeply rooted within him, like a tree firmly planted by the riverside. Although he could see the pain he was causing Sophia, his attempts to bridge the gap only seemed to make his insecurities worse. Seeking solace, he found refuge in casual flings and meaningless encounters with other women, using them as an escape. He thought these moments would ease the internal conflict between his conscience and his desires, but they only led to mistakes he dared not acknowledge-secrets he couldn't bear for Sophia to uncover.

As time passed, their once vibrant relationship began to wither. The closeness and warmth Sophia had once found comfort in were replaced by emotional distance and darkness. Deep down, she still saw glimpses of the love they once shared in his eyes, but his behavior left her confused and uncertain. Torn by his detachment, she eventually resigned herself to accept whatever their relationship became. As long as he remained hers, she would endure the changes, telling herself that nothing lasts forever and that relationships inevitably evolve-even if all she wanted was to hold on to what they once had.

Was she asking for too much, or did she truly deserve to be treated like a princess? Even though she knew Julian's love for her was real, she couldn't help but question it. Is this what love feels like-this kind of pain? she wondered, staring at herself in the mirror as if her reflection might provide the answer. Her heart ached deeply, and she never imagined their relationship would come to this. If only someone had warned her that love could look like this. She could barely eat or find solace in the little things she used to do to lift her spirits. Her love for Julian had grown so strong that she feared complicating the situation further.

She didn't want to confront him and risk igniting his anger. His sudden change in behavior was already more than she could handle. The thought of him being mad at her was unbearable; it would feel like her entire world was crumbling. All she wanted was to focus on improving their relationship, to find a way back to the sweet moments they used to share. How wonderful it would be if she could reach out to him, and he was emotionally available again. She longed to talk to someone about her feelings, but there was no one. Her heart was heavy with unspoken words, all meant for him, but he never seemed to listen.

When she tried to bring up these conversations, he would either pretend to be distracted or shift the topic to something unrelated, avoiding the issue altogether. It left her feeling even more alone, as if her feelings had no place in their relationship anymore.
