Tonight was supposed to be the happiest night of my life, my engagement party to Alex Turner at the grand St. Regis ballroom. He was handsome, the heir to a fortune, and I had loved him for three years. As he reached for the ring, a woman stumbled in, disheveled and crying. "Alex!" she wailed, claiming she' d been drugged. It was Chloe Hayes, his childhood friend, the one he always called "just like a sister." Without a moment' s hesitation, Alex abandoned me on stage, scooping Chloe into his arms and disappearing into a private lounge. The crowd' s whispers and snickers burned my ears. "Did you see that? He just left her." "On their engagement night, too. How humiliating." My joy curdled into a cold, hard knot. I wanted the floor to swallow me whole. How could he do this to me, after everything? Why was I always the one left behind, the one humiliated? Just as shame threatened to consume me, another figure stepped into the spotlight. It was Daniel Sterling, Alex' s business rival. He picked up the abandoned engagement ring, ascended the stage, and knelt before me. "He can' t even be bothered to give you the ring himself," he said, his eyes surprisingly kind. Then, he held up the ring and asked, "Jane Lim, he doesn' t deserve you. Will you marry me?" My mind went blank. He then pulled out a stunning emerald bracelet. "This is a Sterling family heirloom," he declared. "It belongs to the matriarch of our family. I want you to have it." In that moment, I saw a lifeline, a chance to reclaim my dignity. Looking at Daniel, a man I barely knew, offering more respect than Alex ever had, I took a deep breath. "Yes," I said, my voice shaking but clear. "I will."

Introduction

Tonight was supposed to be the happiest night of my life, my engagement party to Alex Turner at the grand St. Regis ballroom.

He was handsome, the heir to a fortune, and I had loved him for three years.

As he reached for the ring, a woman stumbled in, disheveled and crying.

"Alex!" she wailed, claiming she' d been drugged.

It was Chloe Hayes, his childhood friend, the one he always called "just like a sister."

Without a moment' s hesitation, Alex abandoned me on stage, scooping Chloe into his arms and disappearing into a private lounge.

The crowd' s whispers and snickers burned my ears.

"Did you see that? He just left her."

"On their engagement night, too. How humiliating."

My joy curdled into a cold, hard knot.

Will you marry me?"

My mind went blank.

He then pulled out a stunning emerald bracelet.

"This is a Sterling family heirloom," he declared. "It belongs to the matriarch of our family. I want you to have it."

In that moment, I saw a lifeline, a chance to reclaim my dignity.

Looking at Daniel, a man I barely knew, offering more respect than Alex ever had, I took a deep breath.

"Yes," I said, my voice shaking but clear. "I will."

Chapter 1

The grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel glittered under the light of a dozen crystal chandeliers. Tonight was supposed to be the happiest night of my life. My engagement party to Alex Turner.

I stood on the stage, my hand resting lightly on his arm. He was handsome, the heir to the Turner Corporation, and I had loved him for three years.

"Thank you all for coming to celebrate with us," I said into the microphone, my voice filled with genuine joy.

The crowd of society' s elite applauded politely. My eyes found my parents in the front row, their faces beaming with pride.

Alex leaned toward the microphone, a charming smile plastered on his face. "Jane and I are so excited to start our future together. This ring..."

He paused, reaching for the velvet box held by the attendant.

But before he could open it, a commotion erupted near the entrance.

A woman stumbled into the ballroom, her dress torn at the shoulder. Her hair was a mess, and tears streamed down her face.

"Alex!" she cried out, her voice desperate.

It was Chloe Hayes. His childhood friend. The woman he always told me was "just like a sister."

Alex' s smile vanished. His entire body tensed.

"Chloe?"

She staggered toward the stage, her eyes fixed on him. "Alex, help me... I think... I was drugged."

She collapsed onto the floor in a heap.

The entire ballroom fell into a shocked silence, all eyes swinging from the woman on the floor to me and Alex on the stage.

Without a moment' s hesitation, Alex let go of my arm. He jumped off the stage and rushed to Chloe' s side.

"Chloe, what happened? Who did this to you?" he asked, his voice laced with a panic I had never heard from him before.

He scooped her up into his arms and, without a single glance back at me, carried her out of the ballroom and into one of the private lounges.

The door clicked shut behind them.

I was left alone on the stage. The spotlight felt like a physical weight, pinning me in place for everyone to see. The silence broke, replaced by a wave of whispers and hushed laughter.

"Did you see that? He just left her."

"On their engagement night, too. How humiliating."

"That' s Chloe Hayes, isn't it? They' ve always been too close."

My face burned. The joy from moments ago curdled into a cold, hard knot in my stomach. I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me whole.

Just as I was about to flee the stage in shame, another figure walked into the spotlight.

It was Daniel Sterling.

Alex' s business rival. A man whose family was even more powerful and influential than the Turners.

He walked with an easy confidence that commanded attention. He stopped in front of the attendant' s stand and picked up the engagement ring Alex had abandoned.

He ascended the stairs to the stage and stood before me. The whispers in the crowd died down, replaced by confused silence.

"He can' t even be bothered to give you the ring yourself," Daniel said, his voice low but clear. He glanced at the diamond in his hand with disdain before his eyes met mine. They were surprisingly kind.

Then, he did something that stunned the entire room into silence.

He got down on one knee.

He held up the ring. "Jane Lim," he said, his voice ringing with sincerity. "He doesn' t deserve you. Will you marry me?"

A collective gasp swept through the ballroom. My mind went completely blank. I stared at him, unable to process what was happening.

Daniel didn' t waver. He reached into his own jacket pocket and pulled out a different box. He opened it to reveal a stunning emerald bracelet, its deep green stones glowing under the stage lights.

"This is a Sterling family heirloom," he said, his voice steady and strong. "It belongs to the matriarch of our family. My grandmother gave it to me to give to my future wife. I want you to have it."

The weight of his words, the seriousness of his gesture, was a stark contrast to Alex' s casual abandonment. He wasn' t just making a scene; he was making a serious, public commitment.

The crowd' s mood shifted instantly. The mockery turned to shock, then to awe, and finally, to envy. Marrying into the Sterling family was a leap far beyond marrying a Turner.

My heart, which had just been shattered, felt a strange flicker of something else. It wasn't love, but it was a lifeline. It was respect.

I looked at Daniel Sterling, a man I barely knew, offering me more dignity in a single moment than Alex had in three years.

I took a deep breath.

"Yes," I said, my voice shaking but clear. "I will."

Daniel' s face broke into a genuine smile. He slipped the engagement ring onto my finger and then carefully clasped the heavy, cool emerald bracelet around my wrist.

Just then, the lounge door creaked open.

Alex and Chloe emerged. Chloe was clinging to his arm, her makeup smudged, a triumphant smirk playing on her lips. Alex' s tie was loosened, and his hair was slightly disheveled.

He saw me standing with Daniel, saw the ring on my finger, and his face darkened. But he quickly masked it with his usual arrogance.

"Jane, what are you doing?" he said dismissively, as if he were scolding a child. "Stop making a scene. Let's get on with the party."

Chloe chimed in, her voice sickly sweet and dripping with false concern.

"Jane, I' m so sorry. I didn' t mean to cause all this trouble," she said, pressing herself closer to Alex. "Alex was just taking care of me. You shouldn' t be so angry with him. We' re all friends here."

Chapter 2

My gaze fell on Chloe' s face, on the smug satisfaction she couldn' t quite hide in her eyes. The pretense of her being a victim was paper-thin.

"Friends?" I asked, my voice dangerously quiet. "Friends don' t show up to an engagement party claiming to be drugged, with no evidence, simply to ruin the night."

Chloe' s eyes widened in fake shock, and her lower lip began to tremble.

"Jane, how could you say that?" she whispered, tears welling up. "I was scared. I came to Alex because I trust him."

She turned her tear-streaked face to Alex, her ultimate weapon. "Alex, I... I didn' t mean to make her mad. Maybe I should just go."

It worked, just like it always did.

Alex' s face contorted with anger, all of it directed at me.

"Jane, that' s enough!" he snapped. "Chloe was in trouble, and I helped her. What is wrong with you? Why do you always have to be so petty and make everything about you?"

His words hit me, but they didn' t hurt the way they used to. They just sounded hollow and unfair. He was standing there, after publicly humiliating me, and calling me petty.

"I' m being petty?" I asked, a bitter laugh escaping my lips. "You left me on stage, Alex. At our engagement party. You disappeared into a room with her and come back looking like... this. And I' m the one making a scene?"

Alex ran a hand through his hair, his frustration mounting. He was used to me forgiving him, to me backing down.

He tried to soften his tone, resorting to the tactic he always used when he' d pushed me too far.

"Look, I' m sorry, okay?" he said impatiently. "It was an emergency. We can talk about this later. Let' s just get through the night. I' ll make it up to you, I promise."

An empty promise. A hollow apology. The same cycle I had been trapped in for years.

But something was different tonight. Standing next to Daniel, with the solid weight of the Sterling heirloom on my wrist, I felt a strength I hadn't realized I possessed.

I looked Alex straight in the eye.

"There is no 'later,' Alex," I said, my voice steady. "And there is no 'us' ."

I held up my hand, showing him the ring Daniel had just placed on my finger.

"The engagement is off. We' re over."
