Chapter 1 The Training

"Again". Isolde blinked away the exhaustion that was creeping up on her and shot her hand out to try to hit her grandmother but she was too fast for her. Instead of landing a blow as Isolde hoped for, she dodged and she hit the air. The impact of the force that Isolde put in made her lose balance and she tumbled to the ground. That was the umpteenth time she was ending up on the ground while trying to execute a move.

"Ugh! I can't do it". They had been at it for hours now and there was barely any difference. Isolde didn't know why she wasn't feeling frustrated, maybe because she was tired of trying. She bent her head and fought back tears.

"Can't I just give up?" Isolde raised her head and looked at her grandma who had a set look on her face. She shook her head at her and stared pointedly without saying a word. Grumbling under her breath, Isolde got to her feet because she knew what the look her grandmother was giving her meant.

"Come at me again, but this time, spread your legs out like I showed you so you don't end up on the ground". After letting out an exasperated breath, Isolde took the fighting stance that she showed her and raised her balled up fists. She gritted her teeth and blinked back tears. She was not going to make another mistake. She rolled her shoulders as she raised two fingers up in the air and beckoned for Isolde to come at her. Isolde put one foot before the other and broke into a short run, putting in her all. Just before Isolde got to her, she decided to try another move that she told her about. Instead of using her fist, she jumped in the air and extended her right leg while keeping the left leg tucked away. Isolde's plan was to take her unaware so that she could finally hit the ground instead of her. It became obvious, very fast, that she was flying way too close to the sun because she didn't know how to stop overestimating herself.

"Ow, ow, ow". Isolde cradled her knee as she laid on the floor. Her expectation to hit her grandmother didn't come to pass but instead, she ended up on the ground. She was not used to holding herself up so in just a few seconds of being in the air with a jump, she made an acquaintance with the dust that was all around her. The result of that was a sore knee that was starting to hurt really bad.

"Let's take a break". Isolde looked at grandma who was standing above her. She didn't need to tell her twice because she didn't think Isolde could go on, not even if she forced her. Isolde watched her walk away from her and took a seat on one of the benches at the exit of the training center.

"Well, are you going to lay down there all day?" Isolde's lips broke into a hesitant smile as she tried to get to her feet despite her injured knee. She knew that her grandma was getting tired of training her and not seeing any improvements. She was trying her best to keep up, but it was rather difficult because her body was not cooperating with her. There was only so much that she could do as a werewolf who was still inactive. Not being able to actualize her inner wolf made Isolde so weak that she could barely get anywhere despite her willingness to train.

"Save some water for me. I'm parched".

Isolde's voice came out whiny because her grandma was busy guzzling down water from the water bottle that she brought like someone left stranded under the blazing heat of the sun for too long. Isolde limped towards the bench, careful not to put too much pressure on her knee. Because of her practically non-existent wolf, She knew that she was going to have a longer healing time and she didn't want to worsen her already sad lot.

"Does your knee hurt that much?"

Isolde shook her head as she took the water bottle and uncapped it. She looked at her and smiled because she didn't want her to worry too much about her. She already had enough on her plate with Isolde's inabilities. She glanced at her knee and nodded. Happy that she bought her white lie.

"When are you going to get a mate?" Her grandmother asked her.

As her question registered in Isolde's mind, the water that she was drinking went down the wrong pipe and she started coughing. She put her hand on her chest, trying to settle herself down. When she was calm enough, she capped the bottle and dropped it on the ground beside her, ignoring her grandma's question.

"You're not getting any younger, Isolde. When are you getting a mate for yourself?"

Isolde shrugged her shoulders as a response. Her grandma was quietly facing her and still waiting for a proper answer. She didn't see her eyes as Isolde focused on drawing more patterns with her feet because she didn't know what she was expecting to hear from her. She was acting like she didn't know the situation that she was in, when any one around could read the handwriting on the wall from a mile away.

Which mate in their right frame of mind was going to get married to a woman who was as weak as Isolde, without some form of coercion? No one, that was the answer.

No man in their right senses would agree to mate with Isolde, but nevertheless she would be in the lookout for that man.

Was she eventually going to find that man?

Chapter 2 Find A Cure Fast

"The numbers have only doubled".

"That fast?"

Alpha Orion leafed through the report that Garrett, his beta dropped on his desk. True to his word, there was a substantial increase in the number of people infected with the disease that they still didn't know anything about. One morning, they woke up to some of the pack members coughing and feeling too weak to perform their duties. Before they could blink, it degenerated to them being bedridden and now, it was spreading faster than they could keep up with.

"This is bad". Though Alpha Orion was worried about his pack members who were infected, he was more worried about his lover, Celeste, who contracted the disease recently. It was very devastating news because he loved her more than he loved himself. He didn't know what he was going to do if he lost her, because she was the only good thing in his life. She was the anchor he didn't know he needed until she came crashing into it and now, he couldn't imagine doing life without her in it.

"We have to find a cure fast". Alpha Orion nodded in agreement to what he was saying. A cure was needed because Celeste couldn't leave him alone in the cold, dark world. He was ready to spend whatever amount he needed to purchase medicines for her to get better. He didn't care if it required him to sell off some of his properties as long as she got well and regained her strength.

"What do we do?" Orion asked his beta, Garett.

Garett fell silent as they both thought of what their next line of action was going to be. The healers in their pack were trying their best but nothing was working. The herbs and medicines they knew made no difference no matter how much they prescribed. Instead, they seemed to make the illness worse.

"What if we go to the moon guardian for some advice? She may have an idea".

Garett's suggestion wasn't bad afterall. The moon guardian and the elders were behind the success Orion attained as Alpha. They were the ones who trained him after the death of his parents a long time ago and their tidbits of wisdom were what kept him going in the position that he occupied.

"You know what, I don't think that's a bad idea. Let's go". Alpha Orion got to his feet and Garett followed suit. Without wasting any more time, they walked out of Orion's office and made their way towards the place where the moon guardian stayed. She didn't stay in the house or any of the offices because she claimed she wanted to be one with nature. Orion didn't know what that meant but he never argued with her. As long as she could perform her duties properly, he didn't have an issue with wherever she chose to work from.

"I'll wait here for you". When they got to the mouth of the cave where she stayed, Garrett stopped and bowed to Orion as tradition demanded. Orion weighed his options quickly. He believed that the cure was with the moon guardian, because she knew things that the rest of them didn't know, so there was a possibility that she already had one at hand and was just waiting for him to come take it. If that was the case, he needed Garrett to be with him so that he could carry it.

"No, come with me". Garett looked shocked, but did as the Alpha said and followed behind him into the cave which was not like any ordinary one. It was rather homely and smelt like burnt incense and sage. The two scents combined made a person feel calm in some type of way when they walked in. From the numerous times Orion went there during his training, he came to the conclusion that it was meant to make one drop their guards unknowingly.

"Alpha Orion and Beta Garrett".

Before they could even get to the heart of the cave where the moon guardian was usually seated, surrounded by her servants, they met her. She didn't look like she was aging at all. Orion knew that she was way older than him, as she was the moon guardian when his father was Alpha but one couldn't tell by merely looking at her.

"You want a cure to this strange disease, don't you?" Orion wasn't surprised that she knew why they were there, before they even said a word. It would have been more surprising if she wasn't already aware.

"Yes, we have come to ask for the cure".

Orion was feeling very confident that she was with the cure already, because that was just the kind of person she was. She prepared months ahead for eventualities, before they even reared their heads.

"The cure is in your hands and not mine, Alpha Orion". Orion exchanged glances with Garrett who looked just as confused as he felt. What did she mean by that?

"I don't understand". She smiled at Orion and unfolded her arms that were locked behind her. She bent down and picked up a rough rock with a sharp edge, which she showed to him.

"It's simple. You have to get the moon spike. That's the only thing that can take away the disease that's ravaging your pack". The moon spike? Orion didn't know where it was but he was ready to get it. He turned around to spring into action immediately. His spirits were lifted because Celeste was going to be well again.

"One more thing, Alpha Orion". The Alpha stopped in his tracks but didn't turn to face her. He knew that she was going to tell him just where the moon spike could be found.

"Before you can get the spike, you need to get yourself a mate". That made Orion turn around to face her. Good thing that stipulation was already met because of Celeste. He opened his mouth to tell her that when she beat him to it already.

"Your mate has to be a direct descendant of the Lycan King". She stated.

What? Orion's jaw dropped open in shock. He didn't need to look at Garrett to know that they both share the same reaction.

He wasn't even thinking of getting one, because he had Celeste.

Where was he supposed to find someone like that?

Chapter 3 Find Him A Direct Descendant

"Come on, baby, just have a little. It's your favorite".

Alpha Orion was trying to feed Celeste chicken soup, but she was adamant that she didn't want anything to eat. She was the same person who was ever ready to wolf down a whole bowl of chicken soup as long as it was prepared properly and now, she was refusing even a spoon? Orion's chest hurt to see her in the position that she was. She could barely even raise her head up from her pillow, because of how weak she was.

"Please, baby, drink a little for me. I can't bear to see you like this". Orion picked up the napkin that was at her bedside and dabbed it on her forehead and neck. Though the weather was cool, her body was blazing hot like a furnace, while she complained of intense cold. Orion didn't understand the symptoms and how quickly it degenerated, because of that, he couldn't even provide her any relief even though he wanted to do so badly.

"I'm sorry that I haven't found a cure and I can't take care of you in my house like I really should". Because Celeste was an omega, he was forbidden from being seen with her or even mating her. That restriction also barred him from taking her to his house, which left Orion having to sneak around to see her. He even had to go through hoops to meet her secretly at her place, so that he could take care of her. He hated to think of what was going to happen if his pack elders caught a whiff of what he was up to.

"You know, I'm trying my best to find a cure. I met with the moon guardian today. You wouldn't believe what she told me to do". Since she wasn't ready to eat, Orion dropped the plate on her nightstand and got into bed with her. As he fussed over her and made sure that she was okay.

He was going to tell her about his day, so that she would feel a bit better. She couldn't walk around and see things for herself, so Orion was going to bring those things to her and allow her to see through his eyes.

"She told me to get the moon spike, because that is what is going to bring an end to the deadly disease. As if that isn't already hard enough, she went ahead to tell me that I have to get a mate. Get this, baby. She doesn't just want anybody but a woman who's a direct descendant of the Lycan king. Can you imagine?"

Orion let out a laugh, even though it was not funny.

"Maybe she knows about you and just wants to separate us. She usually knows far more than she lets on, so that's a possibility. Whatever the case maybe, you should have seen her face when I rejected her suggestion". The look on the moon guardian's face was one that Orion wasn't going to forget in a hurry because it was comical. In all the years that he knew her, he had never seen her look that shocked.

"Do as she said, my love". Hearing Celeste's voice after so long threw him off for a second. Her voice was no longer the soft bird song as he liked to call it, but it was now husky and cracked, probably because it was not used for a long time.

"What did you say?" Orion turned towards her. He was sure that he didn't hear her properly, because there was no way she just said what he thought he heard. He leaned closer to her and moved her hair that was sticking to the sweat on her neck away from her body. He raised her up enough for him to scrape up her hair into a loose ponytail, so that it wouldn't make her feel uncomfortable anymore. She grabbed his hand with the little strength that she had. He brought her hand up to his mouth and kissed the back of her palms.

"Orion, please do whatever she tells you to do. Do it for me. I really don't want to die". She cried out.

Orion shook his head. He couldn't imagine mating with someone other than her.

"Please Orion, I don't want to die". She cried out again.

Her eyes were filled with tears as she begged him. Orion brought his hand up to her face and wiped the tears. He never wanted to see her cry. She kept mumbling her pleas for him to do whatever he was instructed, just to keep her alive and he didn't know when he promised that he was going to do as she wanted.

"Thank you". She gestured for him to come closer to her, which he did and she kissed him on the forehead. She gave him a little smile, before she closed her eyes.

Paranoid, he put his hand under her nose to check for breath puffs to be sure that she wasn't dead. He let out a breath of relief when he was sure that she was still alive. After making sure that she was comfortable, he let himself out of her house and went to his.

"I have no choice". He squared his shoulders and walked straight to the kitchen where he knew Garrett was going to be. Just as he thought, Garrett was there having something to eat.

"Garrett". He turned to face Alpha Orion and when he saw that he was the one, he got to his feet and greeted Orion as he was supposed to.

"Find me a direct descendant of the Lycan King that I can mate with". Orion went straight to business because time was of the essence. Since Celeste wanted him to go ahead, he was going to do as she wanted. If that was the only way he was going to be able to make sure that she was healthy and didn't lose her life, then he was going to do it. He wanted her to stay by his side, hale and hearty.
