Evelyn Su got a crick in her neck as she looked up at the towering building in front of her. She blinked, unable to believe that she had been hired by the most famous hotel chain in Asia!
She was thrilled to have landed a job at this hotel even if it was just an internship. If she made it through the three-month internship, she would become a part of one of the top five hundred enterprises in the world.
The Sybil Hotel was currently ranked number one in Asia. The hotel's headquarters were in Manhattan, New York. And there were 320, 000 employees in other countries. It had a close cooperation with other large enterprises, and a few tourist spots and resorts were also being developed. It had always been the first choice of stay for political leaders and famous stars in all countries. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that there was no match for it in all of China.
Working in such a prestigious hotel was a dream coming true for Evelyn Su! Taking a deep breath to fight her jitters, Evelyn Su strode in through the rotating glass door.
"Excuse me, it's my first day at work. How can I get to the Human Resources?" Evelyn Su smiled brightly at the two receptionists in front of her.
"You can find it on the fifth floor," one of them replied.
"Okay, thank you very much!" Evelyn Su said amicably.
After a few steps, she turned around and trotted back to the reception desk in her high heels.
"Excuse me, where is the Planning Department?" she asked again.
The two receptionists exchanged a look with each other.
Then the taller one answered, "It's on the eighth floor."
Bowing to the two of them, Evelyn Su said, "We'll be colleagues from now on. Nice to meet you!"
The two women were stunned and nodded slowly.
The general manager of the Human Resources Department was a stout, bald, and nearsighted man. He wore a drab white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his arms. His ancient sense of style reminded Evelyn Su of her physical teacher in junior high school.
She then respectfully handed over her resume.
"Mr. Yuan, what will my job be here?" she asked sincerely.
The man raised his glasses and looked up and down at Evelyn Su.
Strictly speaking, she was not a beautiful woman. Few people would look at her twice on the street. Except for her bright eyes, there was nothing extraordinary about her face. Even her hairstyle was mediocre. Besides, she didn't know how to dress well, so she was easily lost in a crowd.
She had chosen a dark blue business suit and a pair of red high-heeled shoes, which highlighted her slightly chunky legs, for her first day at work.
'Such terrible taste!'
Mr. Yuan thought as he shook his head.
Following his gaze, Evelyn Su looked at herself up and down. Finally, she pursed her lips and chuckled awkwardly. "Red is my lucky color this year. That's why I choose to wear these shoes," she explained sheepishly.
"Well, you can start with the chores first,"
said Mr. Yuan, ignoring her silly explanation. Evelyn Su nodded bitterly.
It didn't matter. Every beginning is difficult. As long as she held on there, she believed that she would get the promotion in her job sooner or later.
"I'll show you around in the Human Resources Department where you can meet your future colleagues," said Mr. Yuan as he led the way.
Evelyn Su followed him. As soon as they stepped into the department, Evelyn Su found that something was wrong. The employees, who had been talking and laughing when they entered, quickly returned to their seats now, as if they were facing a formidable enemy. Evelyn Su was confused. She couldn't figure out what was happening.
Mr. Yuan suddenly slapped his thigh and cried, "Oh, no!
Evelyn, today is the day that our boss is coming for inspection. If you see him, you can't..."
Before he finished speaking, sharp footsteps were heard outside the door. Looking around, Evelyn Su spotted five or six men in suits at the door of the department.
It was almost like a military parade.
The man in the lead exuded a dangerous and dominating aura, which made all the employees immediately sit upright. Even Mr. Yuan nodded and bowed to him.
"Sir, you didn't have to come down in person if you were busy. We..."
The man interrupted Mr. Yuan in a tone that allowed no one to refuse, "Don't bother. I think your efficiency is getting lower and lower."
Although the man's voice was soft, it froze Mr. Yuan. He wiped the sweat off his forehead, licked his lips, and said, "Sir, Nelson Qiu is an old employee. I'm afraid it's not appropriate to fire him just because of a romantic affair..."
Mr. Yuan stopped mid-sentence and gulped nervously when he saw the cold expression on his boss's face.
"If he doesn't leave this office today, you will be the one to leave tomorrow." When these cruel words came out of his mouth, the whole office fell silent.
Mr. Yuan lowered his head, not daring to even breathe heavily. When his boss walked past him, his heart started beating faster, fearing that he would be scolded again.
Evelyn Su didn't know what they were talking about, and as she had done nothing wrong, she was surprised to see the man bypassing Mr. Yuan and coming straight toward her, staring intently at her.
When he got closer, she found that the man was two heads taller than her. She barely reached his chest. Her scalp tingled at the proximity and his overbearing personality.
'This man is... He is Byron Song, the legendary CEO of the Sybil Hotel! Oh, my God!'
Evelyn Su thought. With sweat drenching her back, she swallowed hard and retreated subconsciously like a little animal threatened by a predator, only to find that the man kept coming closer and closer.
"Sir... Nice...to meet you. I'm a new employee," she stammered.
"A woman like you who doesn't care about personal appearances is not qualified to stand in the Sybil Hotel!" barked the man.
His harsh words caused an explosion in Evelyn Su's mind. She remained rooted to the spot.
"Why are you standing there dumbly? Don't you understand what I said?" asked Byron Song.
Mr. Yuan walked over trembling. "Sir, she has just arrived today. So..."
His boss turned to glare at him and Mr. Yuan wisely shut his mouth. He was about to take Evelyn Su away when the next second, the irritated little woman rushed to catch up with Byron Song.
The man's cold eyes swept over her again. Evelyn Su hesitantly took a step back, but when she realized that she had lost her job even before she started working, she summoned up her courage and looked straight into Byron Song's eyes.
Her bold move made the staff gasp collectively.
Byron Song also stopped at the same time. He turned around slightly. Like a blade coming straight at Evelyn, his gaze immediately weakened her resolve.
"Well, Sir... Please give me one more chance. I just don't match my clothes well," she said hurriedly, trying her best to explain.
"No! I'm serious. I won't change my mind. Mr. Yuan, please show her out," said Byron Song dismissively.
"You!" For the first time, Evelyn felt ashamed and angry.
As the saying went, "Even a rabbit bites when it's angry." Seeing that Mr. Yuan was about to grab her arm and shove her out of the room, Evelyn's face turned red. But Byron Song was still unmoved. Her blood boiled with blind fury.
"Don't think you can fire people as you please! You might be the CEO, but you are over the line! You haven't even given me a chance. Why are you refusing me like this? No wonder your employees were so tensed knowing you were going to inspect the area. I advise you to drink more cold tea to calm yourself down!" she snapped.
Everyone in the room watched as their imposing CEO was rebuked by this insignificant girl, and felt sorry for Evelyn. Her fate was sealed.
They were convinced that their new colleague was definitely fired.
"Why don't you say anything? Why don't you reply to my question? Are you feeling guilty? Are you dumb? What's wrong? Afraid I'm right?" Evelyn fired off a series of questions.
The man was silent for a long time. His face betrayed only a flicker of annoyance at her accusations. However, even the most obtuse person could sense the glacial vibe emitting from his body.
As it was summer, the air conditioner in the office was at 27 degrees. However, everyone was shivering as though they were in the Arctic.
The deathly silence lasted for about a minute. Byron Song finally uttered four words, "Call the security guards."
"What are you doing? You don't need to call the security guard. I can walk myself out!" she yelled.
Eventually, two security guards dragged Evelyn out of the hotel. As she struggled to break free from their grasp, a button broke on her suit. She tidied up her clothes and picked up her briefcase.
"Well, that's the end of that. Why am I so impulsive? I should have stayed calm. Then I might not have lost my job. What a bad first day!" she murmured.
She walked over to the fountain in front of the hotel and took off her high heels.
Her toes were squished inside her shoes, which were too small. As a result, they had turned bright red. Evelyn plopped on the stone steps and rubbed her aching toes.
"You make me happy. How are you doing girls? I know everybody..."
It was her phone's ringtone. Evelyn took out her phone from her pocket and looked at the caller ID. All of a sudden, tears spilled out of her eyes and streamed down her cheeks. "Doris! Listen to me..."
Before Evelyn, no one had ever dared to point at Byron Song's nose and confront him.
Byron Song generally wore a sour expression, but this time it was because of that common employee who insulted him in front of his entire staff. He was furious and his innocent employees would have to bear the brunt.
In his office on the twenty-sixth floor, all department managers stood in a line in front of Byron Song's desk. They all wanted to be invisible at that moment.
"Craig."
The first "victim" appeared.
Craig Xiao, the manager of the Planning Department, stepped forward.
In a team of mostly middle-aged men, he looked young and capable. "Yes, Sir!" he replied firmly.
Byron Song opened the book on the table and spoke without raising his head, "The promotion activity last time worked ineffective. You should know that someone stole your thunder. As the one in charge, you have to take full responsibility."
"I understand." The man lowered his head. His soft brown hair did not match his hard, cold temperament at all.
Craig Xiao, who was usually meticulous, was pulled up by the CEO. So the other managers were understandably nervous and worried about their fate.
An hour later, the "criticism meeting" was over. The managers had entered Byron Song's office with trepidation and come out with dull faces. The temperature on the twenty-sixth floor had dropped to the minimum by now.
After a while, Vincent Wen, Byron Song's special assistant followed him out of the office. He nodded hello to the three secretaries. Then he consulted his notebook and reported beside his boss, "The general shareholder's meeting will be held at ten o'clock. Then you have a meeting with the boss of the XMZ Group at half-past eleven."
Byron Song nodded expressionlessly.
After he took the private elevator and left, several secretaries complained to Vincent Wen that they might have to work overtime that day.
Vincent Wen, who was a nice person, offered them a smile and said, "This morning, our boss was insulted by an intern. Although he fired her on the spot, I feel that he is still fuming. We're going to suffer from now on."
The secretaries began to gossip when they heard this.
"Who is so bold as to confront the head of the Sybil Hotel? Is she crazy?" they couldn't help but ask.
Vincent Wen shook his head mysteriously. "Do you know that proverb? 'A newborn calf is not afraid of a tiger.' Obviously, she is that newborn calf."
At this time, "the newborn calf", Evelyn, was sitting in the corner of a cafe. She lowered her head obediently and endured her friend's scolding.
"Usually you are as docile as a sheep, why do you suddenly become a lion? Why were you so impulsive? Do you know who he is? You are so stupid to lose your job! Now, put yourself in the shoes of the boss. If you are the CEO of the Sybil Hotel, would you put up with an intern's insults in front of your staff? While you're in the company, your fate is in his hands. Do you understand? You should learn to control your temper, okay?"
the woman in front of Evelyn said, rolling her eyes.
She had long curly hair, light make-up, and red lips. She continued her tirade.
"It's not easy to find a job in a reputed company. Why couldn't you seize the opportunity? You are an employee. Don't act like a spoiled child! Evelyn, do you want to go home and still live on your parents' income?" she added.
"No, I need to be independent. Otherwise, my parents will be very angry," Evelyn murmured.
"So just stop it before it happens." Evelyn's friend was exasperated with her behavior. However, her sullen little face had a special charm.
"Doris, can you put in a good word for me? Although I don't like Byron, I want to work in the Sybil Hotel!"
Doris Liang remained silent.
"If the Sybil Hotel hires me again, I will do anything you ask me to! Please help me, Doris!" cried Evelyn desperately
The woman took a leisurely sip of her coffee and raised her chin. "If I help you, how will you repay me?" she asked.
Taking a deep breath, Evelyn gritted her teeth and offered, "I will give you a hand with your graduate thesis."
Smiling brightly, Doris Liang said, "Okay, deal!"
Both of them had been hired by the Sybil Hotel originally. Evelyn had joined the Human Resources, while Doris Liang was assigned to the promising Planning Department.
As soon as she entered her department, she captured the hearts of many men with her outstanding appearance. Her new nickname was "the Miss Charming of the Planning Department." With Doris Liang's help, it was easy for Evelyn to return to the company. Doris Liang only needed to dress pretty or be coquettish, and men would fall over themselves to do what she wanted.
The next day, Mr. Yuan took a big risk and agreed to meet Evelyn.
She strutted into Mr. Yuan's office in high spirits once again. However, the Human Resources was in an uproar. The men gathered in the tea room for a wager. They bet that the manager would kick the intern out again. The odds were ten to one.
Compared to the hubbub outside, the atmosphere inside the office was particularly grim.
"Mr. Yuan, please give me a chance to make amends! I know I have offended the boss, but if you let me come back to work, I will personally apologize to him!" Evelyn begged.
The manager rubbed between his eyebrows as his head was throbbing by now. "Haven't you made enough trouble? The CEO has given an order. I'm just a small department manager. Even if you lend me your courage, I can't dare to allow you to come back!"
He didn't know what influence this girl had. She managed to convince Derek He, the head of the Financial Department, to speak for her personally. Derek He had promoted Mr. Yuan when he was young. That was the only reason he relented and met her.
However, disobeying the boss's order was equivalent to hanging a knife around his neck.
"Mr. Yuan, please! If you let me work here, I will do anything for you! I'll even pour tea, wipe the table, or clean the floors!" Evelyn pleaded again.
"Why are you so stubborn? I said no. Don't you understand? Don't make things difficult for me..."
Before he could finish his words, the internal phone on his desk rang.
So Mr. Yuan held back his anger and picked up the phone. "Hello? Yes, it's me. What? Today? You can send someone from the Room Service. What? You can't? Why? Why can't you do that? Oh, I see." With an embarrassed look on his face, the manager's eyes wandered around, looking for a way out of his predicament.
Finally, his eyes landed on Evelyn and his expression changed.
After hanging up the phone, Mr. Yuan asked tentatively, "Did you just say that you would do anything?"
Seeing that this was her way in, Evelyn nodded eagerly.
"An employee in the Logistics Department resigned two days ago. They are short of people for the time being. Do you want to join that department?" he asked.
"Ah, no problem!" Evelyn said firmly. The Room Service and Logistics Department used to belong to the same department earlier. Later, the general manager of the Sybil Hotel had divided them into two departments to improve the working efficiency and service quality.
The Room Service was only responsible for cleaning the guest rooms, while the Logistics Department was responsible for cleaning the floor, staircase, bathroom, and office cabins of the whole company.
Evelyn changed into the uniform given by the company-a light blue knee-length dress with a white collar and a white apron. She pulled her long hair up into a bun and put on a headscarf, revealing her smooth forehead. She looked smart, energetic, and ready to work.
"From today on, you will be in charge of cleaning mainly the twenty-sixth floor. The bathroom should be cleaned three times a day: once at 11 o'clock in the morning, then at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, and finally after work. Will you remember that?"
The manager of the Logistics Department handed her a printed schedule.
"Got it!" she replied enthusiastically.
"The company's management is very strict. If you are found to be lazy, you will be fined or even fired!" warned the manager.
As soon as Evelyn heard the word "fired", she couldn't help cowering a bit. She bowed slightly to the female manager and grabbed the mop and other cleaning tools, and walked to the elevator.
The elevator door opened with a ding and Evelyn walked in and pressed the button for the twenty-sixth floor. Seeing the floor indicator on the screen increasing, her heart sank rapidly.
