XAVIER'S POV
Sitting on a bench in the garden near my father's house, a place I consider my personal paradise, the spot where I can truly be myself, free from any reminders of my destined role as the next leader of the city's wolf hunters.
However, on this particular occasion, I am reminded of the time when I found myself in danger in the woods, only to be rescued by the very creature that I have been trained to hunt my entire life - wolves.
I had fallen off a cliff, with no one around to save me, but unexpectedly, a wolf appeared before me. Even after all these years, I can never forget the captivating charm of that wolf.
"Valerie, Valerie"
Ohh that's my name, I suddenly snapped back to reality from my deep thoughts.
"that must be Leo" I said to myself
"Finally, there you are", Loe breathing out as a sign of relief.
"Loe, you know this is my favourite spot and it feels like heaven here".
We looked at each other and smiled.
"Leo, what if there's still good in them? I mean wolves, what if they just want to survive and live among us humans ? or what if they're protecting themselves from us humans"?
"Valerie, it's a lie they killed your father. They are not good people".
"Yes, I am aware, but... You know what, let's just forget about it". I rolled my eyes, knowing that he wouldn't comprehend.
I had intended to keep discussing it with him, but I realised he wouldn't understand my point of view, so I decided to end the conversation.
"Valerie, hurry up! The time for your coronation is almost here."
"Oh, right! I completely forgot", as I burst into laughter.
So we hurried back to the house to ensure we would arrive on time for the coronation.
We encountered my mother near the entrance. When we got there she embraced me tightly while uttering these words.
"Your father's desires align with this. It is important for you to let go of your beliefs about wolves being benevolent and fulfil your responsibilities. The council now regards you highly".
There was a terrifying expression in her eyes and at that particular moment, I had no intention of disappointing her.
The hour of the ceremony had arrived, and all the wolf hunters had gathered, their eyes brimming with hope and anticipation.
Led by my mother, I stood before them, my nerves threatening to betray me.
Yet, amidst the sea of expectant faces, I found solace in the memory of my father.
It was from his unwavering strength that I drew my own courage, determined to honour his legacy and prove myself worthy of the position he had left behind.
In ancient Greece, amidst the mystical aura, the illustrious sorceress Salma concocted a potion of immense power, which she graciously presented to me.
My hands trembled with anticipation as I glanced at my mother, whose approving nod signalled that it was safe to partake.
Surrounded by a gathering of valiant wolf hunters, I raised the elixir to my lips and drank the potion Salma had given to me.
It had this weird taste that almost made me throw up.
While squeezing my face like I had tasted soar lime,
"All hail Valeria, all hail Valeria, all hail Valeria!" echoed the resounding chorus of voices, paying homage to me as their leader.
Now, as the leader of the wolf hunters, it was my time to address them.
"Brothers and sisters, I am aware that I cannot fill the shoes of my father. I may not meet your lofty expectations, but I pledge to serve with unwavering dedication and eradicate every wolf that plagues this town".
"Let us raise our glasses in a toast to my father, Luis Alejandro."
To Luis Alejandro... as our goblets clinked together in a celebratory gesture.
Suddenly, Leo approached me with a beaming smile, acknowledging the power of my words.
"I have come to rescue you," he whispered, recognizing my weariness and longing for an escape.
Leo has always been a significant presence in my life as he shared my mother's attention with me.
Unfortunately, Leo's mother passed away during childbirth, leaving him alone with his father. Mr. Santiago, Leo's father, never remarried, as he believed Leo's mother was his one true love and could never be replaced.
Mr. Santiago and my father have been close friends for a long time.
Due to the close bond between Leo and me, our parents always assumed that we would eventually become a couple. However, the truth is that I have never viewed Leo in a romantic way.
"He would have been filled with pride, his deepest desire finally realised... the day his beloved daughter steps into his shoes and carries forward his extraordinary legacy."
But what if that's not my own heart's longing?
Fear not, Valerie, for I have faith in your ability to conquer this challenge.
Just as we were engrossed in our conversation, my mother entered the room unexpectedly.
"Valerie, there you are! I have been searching for you. Remember, the guests have come to witness your triumph. You cannot disappear from sight, and you know that, Leo ."
Returning to the grand hall, I encountered Leo's father in the corridor.
Greetings, Mr. Santiago,
"Valerie, allow me to introduce you to some of your father's esteemed colleagues."
As we made our way, I caught a glimpse of an unfamiliar face, but my attention was swiftly captured by Mr Santiago's presence. When I turned back, the mysterious man had vanished into thin air.
The ceremony reached its conclusion, and I found myself lying on my bed, lost in a sea of thoughts, gazing at the ceiling.
Yet, a sense of relief washed over me as the day finally came to an end.
It had been a fortnight since my coronation and life had seemingly returned to its mundane rhythm.
As I sat outside, basking in the gentle breeze, my eyes caught sight of Leo making his way towards me.
VALERIE'S POV
With each step, my heart quickened its pace, thinking something bad had happened.
As he reached my side, he gracefully descended to his knees, producing a gleaming ring from his pocket.
And then, with a voice filled with hope, he posed a question that would have alter the course of our lives forever.
"Valerie, will you do me the honour of becoming my wife?"
"Leo, don't tell me you're joking" I asked.
"No Valerie, I've been willing to do this for a long time and I couldn't hold it anymore,"
"I love you, Valerie, and I believe that this decision would benefit both of us and make us stronger," Leo replied.
I shook my head and moved it from side to side.
"No, Leo, I can't marry you," I stated.
"You've always been my best friend, and I've never seen you as a romantic partner," I explained.
"Whereas I don't plan to vanquish this city from wolves but rather bring harmony between humans and wolves".
"I cannot accept this, Leo," I concluded.
Reaching for the door, my mom held the door knob and opened it
We looked at each other for a split second.
I turned around, walked away and left for my room, leaving Leo with my mom as she opened the door.
After a while, my mother burst into my room with an angry expression on her face.
"Why did you reject Leo's proposal?" she inquired.
Mom, I cannot marry Leo because I don't love him and I don't envision a future with him.
Her face contorted with anger, my mom retorted, "And what about your father's legacy?"
"Mom, I have plans to bring harmony between wolves and......
Before I could complete what I was saying, her hand struck my cheek with a force that silenced my words.
"Enough, Valerie! Love is inconsequential. I am weary of your foolishness. You're no longer a child.
Your duty is to protect this town, and you both can achieve that together, as one."
Helplessness engulfed me as my mom walk out of my room.
Within the confines of that room, I cried out and the pain deepened the ache within my soul.
I couldn't bear the thought of being trapped in a loveless marriage, bound by the chains of deceit.
It has been two days since the argument with my mom and I didn't leave my room after the incident either.
I was asleep when I heard my name, a very faint voice. It was as if it wanted me to wake up at that moment.
"Valerie!"
I woke up immediately, that was when I realised it was just a dream and apart from my name being called I can't remember anything else from the dream.
I got up from my bed and got really thirsty, that was when I realised the jar of water in my room had finished so I decided to get some from the
kitchen.
For the first time in forty-two hours I left my room, I went to the kitchen and got a jar of water but on my way back to my room I heard whispers from my dad's sturdy.
I was so eager to know what was going on.
On getting there the door was a bit open, I saw Leo, his dad Mr Santiago and my mom talking and I stood therer.
I wanted to get in but got to hear their conversation.
"I don't know why the council chose her in the first place". That was Mr Santiago's voice
"She's not fit for it," he continued.
"I must marry her dad, if not I won't get the power I desire. I deserve that position and not her" Leo said.
"I am aware that she is not worthy of it; she doesn't even have the lineage of an Alejandro. Luis, my deceased husband, simply discovered her in the forest and brought her back home," my mother included".
At that moment I got the shock of my life.
My eyes wide open.
I wanted to cover my mouth so I wouldn't scream. I didn't even know when the jar of water in my hand fell to the ground.
"Who's there"? they all asked
But before they could get to the door I had already stormed out of the house running into the depth of the woods.
"No no no no I've been living a lie, no wonder mom never treated me right".
"I've always yearned for the love of a mother, I've been trying so hard to please her".
"Nothing I did was right with her".
Tears ran down my cheeks from my eyes, but I didn't mind, I kept running.
I had cuts from branches of trees but it didn't compare to the pain I felt.
Then I started getting memories from the past, how my dad always defended me, how mom looked at me and everything was now adding up.
My heart pounded with a combination of fear and resolve. I had put my faith in them, believed in them wholeheartedly, only to be betrayed in the most heartless manner.
It was dusk a, I was in the middle of nowhere, my eyes were swollen already from crying and I could barely see.
It was moonrise, a full moon, and I thought it was the end of me since it was almost time for wolves to come out and hunt.
"Howwwwwwlllll".
I could hear them from a distance. It was faint at first but gradually it became strong as they got closer.
At this point I was confused and I couldn't hide because they'd already gotten my scent and I just stood there frozen.
You could tell they were rogues.
With my heart pounding, unsure of what action to take, I found myself frozen in place. Suddenly, a voice reached my ears, simultaneously cringe worthy at the same time fearful.
"Human, what are you doing out in the woods?"
"Pls don't hurt me" I begged like my life depended on it.
"I can't promise you that" it laughed
And the other wolves mocked me too.
"Oh shit I'm doomed I don't want to die", I said to myself
I was already weak and running out of breath because I was panicking and scared for my life at the same time.
I heard one of the rogues run towards me to attack me, I had lost hope since I was too weak to even do anything.
But suddenly I heard a howl from a wolf,
VALERIE'S POV
but it was very loud like that of an Alpha.
Although I could barely see, it was a white charming wolf, the moonlight made it even more beautiful.
" Stay away from her !" it roared.
He got into a battle with the rogues and I blacked out.
ALPHA XAVIER'S POV
My beta Alec and I were in a meeting in my sturdy building discussing how to get rid of the rogues roaming around the realm.
But later I got this strong scent.
The same scent I got when I saved a human girl out in the woods years ago and I can smell her from miles away.
But her scent was so strong you could tell she was close.
We sat in the sturdy and I believe my beta saw that my attention was no longer there.
"Our mate, our mate".
My wolf Kai kept saying in my head I tried pushing back but he kept going on.
"Xavier, our mate, is in danger, I can sense it."
"Sir, I think we should end the meeting since you're a bit distracted", my beta suggested.
"No, let's continue".
But Kai kept pushing until he had his way.
"Our mate is in danger Xavier, let's hurry
Remember what the moon goddess said,
If you miss this opportunity it will take another hundred years before we meet our destined mate again".
"This meeting is adjourned."
"Understood sir", my beta obeyed.
My heart beating fast I stormed out of my mansion as soon as I adjourned the meeting, with the hopes that she's still alive.
We could sense her fear, we could even hear her heartbeat and the closer we got to her the more her scent got stronger.
Thank God for the moon goddess she did not only bless me with strength but with a strong sense of smell and speed.
"There she is!" my wolf Kai said.
And immediately I got sight of her, she was just there looking helpless.
I haven't felt this sympathy for anyone for a long time and immediately we pounced on the wolf that almost attacked her.
There were more than fifteen of them and in a split second I killed all of them, all rogues.
"That serves them right" my wolf Kai jumped up happily
"Thank God we got here just in time". I said to Kai
But when I turned around she was just there, yes we could still hear her heartbeat but her pulse was weak.
So I carried her on my back and hurried back to my mansion with her.
On getting there she was still unconscious and her wounds did not heal because she's human.
"Call for the physician" I yelled.
And my servant hurriedly left to get the physician.
I took her to my room, cleaned her up and got her new clothes.
"Pls don't leave me," she held my hand for a second.
And still fell back unconscious while tears dripped down her eyes.
The physician arrived, his skilled hands tenderly grasping her delicate wrist, mending the wounded flesh with a tapestry of stitches.
"Though she clings to life, her state is precarious, a treacherous path lies ahead, where only a divine intervention can guide her through the veil of night," he solemnly whispered.
As my gaze fell upon her fragile form, a surge of empathy washed over me.
I yearned for her survival, praying for her endurance in this harrowing ordeal.
After the incident in the woods I called for a meeting with my beta Alec and the remaining members of my pack.
We all gathered.
"There was an attack in the woods, thank God I got there on time if not they would have killed a human".
"But sir I didn't get any sign so how come u got to know about the attack?" Alec asked.
I followed the human's scent and it lead me straight to them.
"Talking about scent I can smell a human and I believe the others can smell her too" my beta whispered to my ear.
"Can we talk about that later, we have more pressing matters to attend to".
Then I addressed the others
"I want you all to cover all perimeters of the realm, we are not only trying to protect ourselves but also humans".
Rogues are a danger to both humans and wolves.
"But sir, we all know that not all rogues are bad, some escaped from their previous pack due to abusive situations.
I suggest that instead of killing them we capture them and train them as armies in our pack then kill anyone that betrays us instead". One of them suggested.
"That's a really good idea".
I was really surprised by it because the idea didn't come from Alec, my trusted beta.
I nodded my head to show him I was pleased with the idea.
"Do the rest of you agree ?"
Yes sir, they all answered.
"Sir most of us here were rogues, you found us, trained us, and we became stronger and I believe some rogues need that same help you rendered to us". Alec added
"I believe you all know what to do now I declare this meeting dismissed".
Alec stayed back while the others left.
Where is she? Alec asked
"She's in my room upstairs , she's still unconscious".
"We need to take her back, this will lead the human right to us and you know how they can be, this will put us all in danger we need to get rid of her".
I can't , Alec
And why is that? Alec asked
"My wolf keeps telling me she is my mate"
What?!
"How is that even possible? she's human.
"It is possible but it rarely happens and I've always known that my mate is human. The moon goddess showed me in a vision".
"This can't happen now Xavier, you know what these humans did to us even when we are out to protect them they see us as enemies "
I could tell how worried he was and my wolf Kai was already getting upset but I had to control him so things don't get bad.
"Alec if I could change things I would but I can't, pls don't tell the others yet, once she regains consciousness I will think of what to do".
Alec looked at me, touched my shoulder and then left after.
Fuck!
I can't do anything now since she's still unconscious.
As I was in the sitting room contemplating on what steps to take, I called the maid looking after her to ask how she was.
"She's awake sir".
I hurried to my bedroom to see her.
