Chapter 1 On the way to Manhattan
It's 7am, the bell of the "Alma de Maria" church has just rung.
It's the weekend but people are already up. Some are at the farm taking care of the animals, others are walking their horses, some are cultivating wheat, and let's not forget those who are at the church preparing for the next day's service, like Mother Theresa for example.
This woman with a heart of gold, as she is called, is a Mexican woman from the 60's who immigrated to New York, more precisely to the village called "Bousco" to pursue her mission: that of being a servant totally dedicated to the Lord.
Not very tall and chubby, she is like the mother of all the sisters of the church and even of all the inhabitants of the village and especially, the one who comes after the priest. The latter trusts her completely and entrusts her with the important tasks of the church.
After finishing the preparation of the service, she walks for about ten minutes to the home of a family she knows very well: the PELEGRO family.

This family is composed of the father, Mr. Juan-Pablo, the son Julio and the daughter Adrianna who is the last of the siblings.
It is a day rich emotionally because Julio and Adrianna are about to go to Manhattan which is 8 hours away by train to continue their studies in order to have a better life later.

Just then, Lucia snatches Damien's phone and she tells him once again:
- Can you leave your phone for a moment?
- What I am doing is important! He retorts coldly.
- You'll do it later! Well, look, they confused the right entrance with the one to the dressing rooms!
She starts to laugh and that's when he looks up to see. He sees Julio and Adrianna. He becomes at once frozen like a post.
Just then Adrianna slips and falls as she walks down the few stairs between the podium and the benches where the students are sitting.
Deep inside, she feels a tremendous amount of shame. She is so embarrassed but luckily for her, her brother is there and helps her up.
Some people in the room are laughing and not hiding it, like Lucia for example who says out loud laughing:
- How did this chick fall when she has sneakers?
That means that if she had heels...
She laughs and so do some of the students.
Emily, on the other hand, doesn't find anything funny about what she's saying. She glances at her brother so she can remember what she said to him when they were on their way.
Damien turns around at the same time because he expected her to look at him and then, turns to Lucia and says:
- For a first day, it's still daring from you although it doesn't surprise me! Stay discreet Lucia and avoid that you are noticed negatively!
Meanwhile, Adrianna and Julio walk and look for a place to sit. They pass by Damien who is sitting at the end of the bench and he turns to look at them.
Lucia notices this and doesn't like it.
- What? You know them?
He doesn't hear what she says. It's when she touches his head and says "Hey, I'm talking to you" that he jumps up and looks at her.
- Yes, what is it?
- Why are you looking at them like that? I was just kidding my love! You don't have to feel sorry for them and besides, who hasn't fallen? So don't ask me to avoid being looked at negatively!
He sighs and tells her:
- My phone please!
She gives it to him even though she is a little angry.
- What Lucia? Why are you making that face?
- You're weird all of a sudden!
- There is nothing, Lucia! I was just looking at them trying to figure out what could have happened to make them go in the wrong way. And I'm sorry for what I said to you!
She smiles and replies:
- Okay my love!
He puts away his phone which occupied him a few minutes earlier in his pocket.
Julio and Adrianna take a seat in the fifth bench on the right row (seen from behind), the same row where Emily is and the staff continue to introduce themselves but Damien can't help but turn discreetly from time to time to look at them and Emily notices from where she is sitting.
The introductions end and the students go out to look at the list of numbers of the different rooms and lockers.
There are so many students in front of this list that Julio and Adrianna decide to wait in the room until there are not enough people left before going to look at the numbers
and they are not the only ones to do it.
- I feel bad about earlier Julio! I'm sorry for the shame I inflicted on us!
She says it with a sad voice.
- It doesn't matter, it happens to everyone! Forget about it!
- Did you see how some people laughed?
- Calm down and forget about it, it's nothing okay?
She nods her head!
Damien and Lucia get up to look at the list. They pass by them to get out and that's when Julio looks up to watch them and Adrianna follows suit.
She looks at Damien accompanied by the one who made fun of her openly in front of everyone and he looks at her too.
