Ellen Grater walked with bold steps into the Haven Hotel. She was dressed in a navy-blue dress that stopped at her knees, and her brunette hair cascaded down her back in lovely curls. Despite the casual wear, her height and elegant V-shaped face added to her appeal, as many heads turned in her direction.
With a confident gait, she moved through the lobby of the hotel in silver heels, hoping the horrible information she had received was not true.
"Luke just proposed to Emily," read the text sent to her phone an hour ago.
Ellen had learned that her ex-boyfriend of two years, who had broken up with her two weeks ago, had just proposed to another lady! Emily!
She walked into the elevator and pressed the button to the fourth floor. The surprise proposal was said to be taking place at the private restaurant at the hotel.
Stepping out of the elevator, she moved down the hall towards the private restaurant. On her way, she came across an elderly woman struggling to open her door and looking almost frustrated. Having had a soft spot for elderly women because of her neighbor, Mama Anderson, she couldn't leave the woman helpless.
"Hello ma'am, Is something wrong?" She asked, seeing the woman leaning against the wall.
"Oh dear, I can't seem to open my door, and I'm so tired of standing," the woman replied.
"Okay, let me try it again for you," Ellen said, taking the keys from the elderly woman. She noticed the woman was holding the key to room 122, and she was standing at the door to room 115.
"Oh, I think your room is still a few doors away," she said to the elderly woman, smiling at her. The elderly woman was suddenly frantic. Noticing this, Ellen reached out to take her hand and assured her "Not to worry, I'll escort you there; it should be just around the corner".
She helped the woman to her door, assisted her in opening the door, and ensured she got into the room.
"Oh dear, thank you," the elderly woman said, grabbing Ellen's face.
"You're welcome, ma'am," she replied.
As she turned to leave, a middle-aged lady rushed into the room and said, "Mrs. Warner, I've been looking for you."
"Oh, Mary, this young lady here helped me," the elderly woman said.
Turning to Ellen, the lady said, "Oh, thank you so much".
"You're welcome" Ellen replied, and she added more quietly "you need to be more vigilant so she doesn't go off on her own".
Smiling one last time at the two, she left the room and headed to the private restaurant on the same floor. Upon entering, she noticed a section of the restaurant was decorated with flowers, and there were petals on the floor around the center table, which was the focal point of the decoration.
The couple were none other than Luke Willer and Emily, her ex-boyfriend and his new fiancée. Summoning all the courage she had left, she walked up to their table.
"Look who's here," she said, smiling at them. "Hello Luke and Emily, how are you?"
"I heard Luke proposed to you tonight; congratulations," she said to them.
"Ellen, what are you doing here?" Luke asked as he looked around, hoping no one was paying them any attention.
"So, this was why you broke up with me, and to think it was for Emily," Ellen said as she glared at the two in front of her.
"We can explain, Ellen; we never meant for any of this to happen," Emily told her.
Oh, really, is that why you were ashamed to tell me you were dating my boyfriend behind me?" Ellen glared at her.
The attention of those around them was beginning to be drawn to them, and Luke was becoming uncomfortable. He had a few of his colleagues in attendance, and he didn't want anything to taint his reputation.
He moved closer to Ellen and whispered, "You're causing a scene, Ellen; let's take this outside."
She laughed hysterically, turning to look at the faces of those who had gathered around them. A few faces she recognized had a shocked expression on their faces. A few of them were her colleagues; she pretty much worked with a lot of them across various departments.
"What do you think is going on?" Ellen heard someone say in the crowd.
"I have no idea, but it looks like Luke's mad at Ellen right now," another person replied.
Ellen, let's talk outside," Emily said, grabbing her hand.
"You all enjoy the rest of the party," Ellen said as she was pulled away by Emily.
"Ellen, I know you're hurt, but there's hardly anything you can do about this," Emily told her as soon as they were outside.
"Ha ha..." feigning a half laugh, Ellen fired back at her, "You've got some nerve, you know."
"You had the audacity to cheat with my boyfriend, and you're not ashamed of it".
"These things happen okay, so don't come and spoil this for me; after all, we're like sisters." Emily smiled wickedly as she turned and headed back to the restaurant.
Appalled at what Emily had said to her, Ellen stood there, shocked. She was hurt that Emily had felt no regret for what she had done.
Emily met Luke at the door and said to him, "Go pacify her, Luke; whatever you need to say to her, say it."
"I don't want her spoiling this for us; it was your idea to keep dating her all this time, so go fix it," she added as she returned to the party.
Seeing her standing at the end of the hall, Luke ran to her.
"Ellen, let me explain," he told her, touching her shoulders.
"I do not need your explanation; I just need you to answer one question: how long has this been going on?" she asked him.
Flipping a hand through his hair, his frustration was evident as he replied, "Ellen, please, let's not do this."
"Drop the act, goddammit, and answer the fucking question!" Ellen yelled.
Resigned to his fate, he yelled back at her, "A year, okay!"
"There you have it. Are you satisfied now?"
Ellen staggered at his answer: How has she been that gullible and blind? They had deceived her for this long, and she had not noticed.
"One year! A whole fucking year!" she shouted. "You betrayed me with my best friend".
"She is my friend, my best friend, Luke," Ellen shouted at him.
"I love her, Ellen; I know it's hard to accept that right now," Luke told her.
"Accept that you betrayed me and kept stringing me along like a fool for the past one year?" She asked him as tears pooled in her eyes.
"You were dating my best friend for a year, and then you broke up with me two weeks ago," she shouted at him.
"What were you expecting that I wouldn't know?" Ellen said, pointing at his chest.
"We were going to tell you; I knew you'd react this way, and that's why I didn't tell you," Luke said in his defense.
"I'll do whatever you want, okay, anything to help you adjust to this," he told her.
"Could this night get any funny?" Ellen said, tears rolling down her face as she laughed at his statement.
"All you care about is your reputation and what people think about you. I should have realized what a bloody liar you were all this time," she said as she pressed the elevator button.
"Ellen, don't go doing anything funny; you just need to go home right now," he said to her.
Looking at him one last time as Ellen stepped into the elevator, she said, "Everything is already upside down; what else could go wrong?" as the doors slid closed.
She got to the lobby of the hotel and headed to the doors, wiping tears from her eyes. Halting at the door, she said to herself "Well, what could go wrong".
Throwing caution to the wind, she headed in the direction of the club, which was located to the far right of the hotel lobby.
"I might as well get drunk and forget all this happened," she told herself.
Entering the club, the loud sound of music and the gyrating bodies on the dance floor were a welcome distraction for her. She walked to the bar with one purpose in mind: to get drunk and wasted.
A male bartender walked to where she was sitting and asked, "What would you like to have?"
Tilting her head to the right with a domineering smile on her face, she said, "Give me your strongest drink, and keep it coming."
"Coming right up," the bartender replied, a quirky smile on his face as he turned to do her bidding.
There were a couple of people sitting at the bar, while others were sitting at the private tables at the back of the club. You could hardly make out the faces of anyone around you except you were up close.
Ellen kept drinking and barely left the bar as she focused on gulping down as many glasses as she could.
After her sixth glass, she stood up and joined the dance floor. She danced, raising her hands and just letting herself go to the music.
I'm going to show them who the boss is; they think they can just go free after doing this, but of course not. Ellen thought to herself as she danced with anyone who cared to join her.
"Why the hell am I still thinking about them? I need to get more drinks," Ellen said to herself as she staggered to the bar.
"More drinks, please," she said to the bar tender. She had another glass, and after her third glass, she could barely stand.
Ellen tried to stand but couldn't; grabbing her bag, she held onto the bar and tried to raise herself. She slipped, and as she fell, a strong arm grabbed her by the waist and held her against a hard chest.
"Oh...boy... Whew, that was close!" Ellen giggled as she raised her eye to see who the knight in shining armor was.
She stared into the deepest blue eyes she had ever seen.
"Oh, man, you look so good," Ellen drawled, smiling at the handsome face before her.
"I'll escort you to the door," the handsome man said.
"Oh, I could follow you anywhere, handsome," she said, giggling like a schoolgirl.
Covering her mouth with one hand, she continued giggling. Why can't I stop giggling? she wondered.
The handsome man gave her purse to someone behind him as he assisted her out of the club.
He helped her to the door, where a bodyguard would help her get into a cab.
"Thank you!" Ellen giggled again at the stranger who had helped her as he left her and walked towards the hotel reception desk.
Ellen," she heard her name. Turning towards the voice, she realized it was Luke.
"What are you still doing here?" Luke continued to say:
They had just finished with their party and were heading out of the hotel too.
"Hey...yy," Ellen drawled.
"I don't need your permission to be here." Ellen said to them, looking at them with disdain.
"You're drunk, Ellen," Luke said, stepping forward to take her.
"Don't you dare touch me," Ellen told him.
"I'm waiting for my new boyfriend," she said to them.
"Don't be silly, Ellen; we both know you don't have one." Emily scoffed at her statement.
"Oh, really, watch me," Ellen replied, and she walked towards the handsome stranger who had helped her earlier. She had no idea how she was able to walk without falling on her face, but she was most grateful that the handsome man was still at the reception desk.
"Where the hell do you think you're going? Ellen!" Luke shouted as he followed her into the hotel lobby, with Emily right behind him.
Tapping him on the shoulder, Ellen said, trying to keep a fake smile in place, "Help me one last time, will you?"
Without waiting for a response, she moved closer to him and kissed him!
To convince the audience behind her, she wrapped her arms around his neck and kept kissing him till she heard Emily say "Let's go, Luke".
A few heartbeats later, she stepped away from him and realized that her audience had left.
"That wasn't so bad after all," Ellen said, turning back to face the handsome stranger in front of her.
The events of the last few minutes had sobered her up a bit. The handsome stranger looked stunned as he stared at her. His face was hardened in anger, and stepping towards her, he raised up his right hand.
He advanced towards her and touched her face as he bent his head and whispered, "Quite the audacious move; never let me see you anywhere around me ever, or you won't like what I'll do to you," the handsome stranger said to her. Ellen watched him walk away, wishing the ground would open and swallow her.

"Have you seen her?" Alex Gilbert asked Mary, the caretaker of Mrs. Warner, wife of the late Paul Warner, founder of Warner Haven Corporation.
Yes, I have; she is in her room now; a young lady assisted her," Mary informed Alex.
"Come with me; Mr. Warner is at the club; he'd like to hear it from you himself," Alex said to her as they walked towards the club.
*******
Leo Warner is the CEO of Warner Haven Corporation, the fastest-growing hotel chain in the country.
He was the only grandchild of the Warner family, and at thirty years old, he was in charge of the company.
Today was a memorable day for him as he was finally made CEO and was now in total charge of the company. He has finally taken over the family company that his father and uncle founded.
"It's one of those days, Mr. Warner; should I bring her over?" Mary had told him when she called to inform him about his grandma's episode.
"Okay, Mary, bring her," Leo instructed her.
He had instructed his assistant, Alex Gilbert, to get her room ready and ensure she was monitored.
When she arrived, he had met her at the lobby.
"Hello, grandma," Leo said to his grandmother, smiling at her affectionately.
"Leo, what are you doing here? Don't go running around the lobby," she said, patting him on the head.
"I won't, gran; I'm here to see you," he told her, holding her hands with affection as he walked her to the elevator.
"Oh, my little Leo, run along; you should be in bed," she said, shooing him away.
"I'm going to wait for your grandpa, okay? Mrs. Warner told him.
"Okay, gran, I'll see you in the morning," Leo told her, leaving her in the care of Mary.
Leo was informed later that his grandmother had gone up alone and had told Mary to come up later.
Leo looked up from his inspection of the club below him as Alex walked in with Mary.
"Where did you find her?" he asked them.
"She is in the room and sleeping now," Mary responded.
"Where were you? Why weren't you with her?" Leo was glaring at her.
He had a reputation for not entertaining excuses, and the authority with which he spoke had Mary choosing her words carefully.
"She insisted on going up alone and asked me to go get her purse from the car," Mary explained. "When I got up, the door was still locked, and I came back down to check for her," Mary continued.
"When I got back to the room the second time she was inside, a young lady had assisted her," she concluded.
"Make sure you keep an eye on her and ensure she gets back home safely in the morning."
"Yes, Mr. Warner, it won't happen again."
As Mary turned to leave, she saw the lady who had assisted Leo's grandmother.
"Oh, that's the lady who assisted Mrs. Warner," Mary said, pointing at a lady who was at the bar.
Leo turned to look in the direction Mary pointed. Her back was to him, and her curly brunette hair cascaded down her back.
"You can go, Mary," Leo said in that hard voice of his.
"Mr. Warner, the documents are ready," Alex reminded him.
Leo's attention was fixed on the lady; they were standing on the upper level of the club. It was the last part of the hotel he was inspecting today.
"Okay, I hope you've gone through them before bringing them to me, and you've included the clauses I asked you to," Leo emphasized as he moved to remove his suit and roll up the sleeves of his shirt.
"Yes, they've been included, Mr. Warner." Alex, who was aware that his boss didn't like excuses, nodded as he assured him.
Leo took the documents and went through them; he was acquiring a smaller hotel in the city as part of his plan to expand Warner Haven Corporation.
By the time Leo was done with the papers and looked down to the club below, he saw the lady moving from the dance floor back to the bar.
"She is drunk and should be on her way home," Leo said as he stood up.
"Who? Mr. Warner, I can have a bodyguard see her out," Alex replied.
He had gone around the hotel and was done. I might as well see her out," he said as he went down the stairs.
Despite his skeptical view of women, he decides to return the favor to the strange lady and help her out of the club before she drinks herself into a stupor.
He came down the stairs, not bothering to put his suit back on. Alex followed him with the suit.
As Leo walked up to her, she was about to fall, so he reached out and held her waist.
"Oh...boy...wheew... That was close," she said, and she giggled as she raised her eye to Leo.
"Oh, man, you look so good," she said again, obviously drunk.
"I'll escort you to the door," Leo told her. The fact that she had rendered help to his grandmother was the only privilege she was enjoying right now. He was weary of women, as they used every means to get close to him.
"Oh, I could follow you anywhere, handsome," she said as she kept giggling.
Leo took her purse and gave it to Alex as he assisted her out of the club. He handed her to a bodyguard to help her get a cab.
"Thank you," the lady said, despite her drunken state.
Leaving them at the door, Leo walked to the reception with Alex right behind him.
"Ensure you get the documents across to them," Leo said to Alex.
Yes, Mr. Warner, I'll ensure the deal is completed over the weekend," Alex replied.
Leo took his suite from his assistant and dismissed him. As he turned to head up to his penthouse, he felt someone tap his shoulders.
Turning back, he saw the lady he had assisted earlier. She had a determined expression on her face as she said, "Help me one last time, will you?"
Without waiting for a response, she moved closer to him and kissed him!
Leo went rigid; no lady had ever gotten this close to him without his permission. His mind went blank as he felt his heart race.
A few minutes later, the kiss ended, and the lady stepped back from him.
Regaining his composure, he hardened his face as he raised his right hand to touch her face.
He stepped close to her and whispered in her ears "Quite the audacious move; never let me see you anywhere around me ever, or you won't like what I'll do to you"
.
He turned and walked to the elevator, leaving her standing there. She was lucky she'd helped his grandmother earlier; that was her saving grace, Leo thought. Various women had devised means to get close to him, but this was by far the closest.
