Chapter. 1
Every day, Hanum Permatasari, a thirteen year old girl, goes to the hospital to wait for her father who is hospitalized. Hanum, who had just come home from school, immediately pedaled hers mini bike to the hospital. She ignored the hot sun, all that was on hers mind was wanting to quickly meet hers father. Arriving in front of the hospital, Hanum got off hers bicycle, wiping the sweat from hers forehead. The little girl led her bicycle into the hospital yard. Mr. Narto, the parking attendant at the hospital called him...
"Hanum... quickly put your bicycle here!"
The little girl guided her bicycle while reaching into the skirt pocket of her school uniform. Two coins were taken out and then shoved in front of Mr. Narto.
"This is my bicycle parking money, Mr. Narto."
Mr. Narto smiled while stroking Hanum's head.
"Just save your money, your bicycle is free to park here. Hurry up and meet your father, Hanum."
The little girl smiled.
"Thank you, Mr. Narto."
After leaning his bicycle near the parking lot fence, Hanum ran down the hospital hall way. Still panting for breath, Hanum immediately stopped in front of the patient's room. Slowly the little girl entered the patient's room, saw her father lying down. The little girl's eyes twinkled when she saw the smile on her father's lips. Hanum kissed his father's right hand.
"Assalam Mualaikuum, father. Hanum came straight home from school."
Hers father pointed at the wall clock, saying...
"Waalaikum salam, Hanum. Dad always looks at the clock on the wall, waiting for you to come."
This little girl dragged a chair near her father's bed and told her about all the activities at school. Hanum's chatter was encouragement for her father to recover. Finally Hanum fell asleep in the chair, his head lying on his father's pillow. Before it was half past four in the afternoon, the sound of a knock on the door woke Hanum, Hanum immediately got up from hers chair and walked out of the room to see the plants in the front yard of the patient's room. A nurse and professor Doctor Wijayanto came to examine Hanum's father.
"How is my condition? Can I recover?"
Prof. Dr. Wijayanto sighed.
"Sorry, I have tried to help cure you but the blood cancer is in the final stage."
Hanum's father turned him gaze to look at Hanum from the window.
"Prof. Dr.. Wijayanto, my wife has died and I live with Hanum. If I die, she will definitely be alone."
Prof. Wijayanto and the nurse were surprised to hear this patient's words. Hanum's father continued speaking..
"I don't want Hanum to go to an orphanage even though she will become an orphan."
Prof. Wijayanto saw the nurse standing next to her who was changing the IV bottle. Prof. Wijayanto sat in a chair next to the patient's bed, saying...
"God willing, tomorrow I will invite my wife to meet you."
"Yes, Prof. Wijayanto."
____
The next day, prof. Dr. Wijayanto and his wife met hers father Hanum who was still lying down.
"Hanum's father, this is my wife. Yesterday we talked about you and your daughter Hanum."
Hanum's father smiled and nodded. Prof.'s wife Dr Wijayanto immediately spoke...
"Thank God, Allah answered my prayer. A year after I gave birth to twin boys, I couldn't get pregnant because my uterus was removed."
Hanum's father immediately looked at Prof. Dr. Wijayanto who was sitting stood next to his wife who continued speaking.
"I mean, my husband and I want to adopt your child. We promise that we will treat your child like a biological child, not an adopted child."
His father's eyes filled with tears. On the one hand, he is relieved because there is a good and educated husband and wife who want to adopt their only daughter, but on the other hand, he feels sad because he doesn't have long to live and he has to be separated from Hanum forever. Holding back tears, Hanum's father answered..
"I am grateful to both of you, Prof. Wijayanto, who are willing to take care of my beloved child Hanum."
Hanum's father took a deep breath then continued speaking again..
"I have a house, even though it's just a simple house, please sell it for Hanum's needs."
Prof. Dr. Wijayanto and his wife smiled while shaking their heads. Politely, Prof.'s wife. Hanum answered..
"No, we don't want to sell your house, let the house be a keepsake for Hanum until he grows up."
Prof. Dr. Wijayanto also replied..
"We are the ones who finance and care for Hanum until he grows up."
Tears rolled down Hanum's father's cheeks. While rubbing his eyes, he said...
"Please don't tell Hanum about the blood cancer I have and don't tell me that I don't have long to live."
Prof. Dr. Wijayanto and his wife nodded, the husband and wife's hearts were touched when they heard Hanum's father's words. Not long after, Hanum appeared, after his father introduced Hanum to Prof.'s wife. Dr. Wijayanto Hanum immediately sat on the floor and took out his school textbooks and pencil case from hers school bag. Prof. Dr. Wijayanto and his wife watched what the little girl was doing who was focused on her schoolwork.
"Father, please check the results of this cross product."
Hanum gave a math notebook and pencil to hers lying father. Hers father saw prof. Dr. Wijayanto and his wife...
"I got used to Hanum after school having to do assignments from school, eat, take a nap, recite the Al Qur'an and then study for tomorrow's lesson."
Prof. Dr. Wijayanto raised both thumbs..
"You are a great father who instilled discipline in Hanum."
Hanum's father laughed a little..
"Yes, Prof. Wijayanto. I really love Hanum and taught Hanum to divide his time between his daily activities."
Prof. Dr. Wijayanto and his wife became interested in Hanum, a polite, sweet and smart little girl. This husband and wife believe that Hanum was taught well by his father and that was very clear in the little girl standing in front of them.
___
One week later
Fragrant father's condition worsened, finally his father died. The little girl cried hysterically hugging her father's body. Prof. Dr. Wijayanto and his wife helped return Hanum's father's body to the funeral home. The neighbors arrived, Hanum's father's body was taken out of the ambulance and put into the house. Hanum was still hugging his father's body, Hanum's mouth didn't stop saying...
"Father, don't leave Hanum alone, okay?"
Prof. Dr. Wijayanto and his neighbors purified the body of his father Hanum. Prof. Dr.'s wife. Wijayanto hugged Hanum who was still crying over his father's departure. Prof. Dr. Wijayanto's wife's mother's soul trembled, and her desire to have a little girl as her child became even greater. Softly whispered.
"Your father has been called by Allah. Let him go, Hanum."
The little girl covered in tears hugged the prof's wife tightly. Dr. Wijayanto. Her tiny lips said...
"Father left Hanum alone even though father promised to always be with Hanum."
"If Allah wills, we cannot go against Allah's will, Hanum."
His father's body was buried. After the funeral, they all returned to the funeral home. Prof. Dr. Wijayanto and his wife talked with the local RT head about taking Hanum while showing a will from Hanum's late father which stated that if Hanum was a daughter whose father died, Hanum would be adopted by Prof. Dr Wijayanto and his family.
Chapter 2
Finally Hanum was brought home by Prof. Dr. Wijayanto and his wife went to their house. Along the way, the little girl cried in the car. Prof. Dr. Wijayanto stroked the little orphan girl's head while saying...
"Hanum, from now on you will call me papa and call my wife mama. We are now your parents, son Hanum."
Hanum bowed his head silently, his thoughts still focused on hers late father. The car stopped in front of a large and luxurious house. The husband and wife took Hanum into the spacious yard full of plants. Two boys were standing in front of the living room door. Prof. Dr. Wijayanto hugs his two sons.
"Let's sit down in the living room first. Papa and Mama want to talk."
They sat in the living room. Prof Dr Wijayanto's wife gently and motherly said...
"Hanum, let me introduce you to Raditya and Aditya, they are twins, they are fifteen years old in the 3rd grade of junior high school. Call them brothers."
Hanum raised hers face to see his two adopted brothers.
Prof Dr Wijayanto's wife also said...
"This is Hanum in the 1st grade of junior high school, 13 years old, an orphan. Hers mother died in a car crash when Hanum was 7 years old and today hers father
died, just finished being buried. From now on, Hanum will be your little sister."
The twins answered...
"Yes, ma'am."
______
Three years later.
Hanum grew up to be a smart, polite, good girl. Allah was really kind in making it easy for Hanum to be integrated and familiar with Prof.'s family.
Prof .Dr. Wijayanto . After evening prayers in congregation at the mosque near the house, Hanum immediately rushed home.
"Assalamualaikum, papa."
Hanum kissed his adoptive father's hand
"Waalaikum salam, Hanum."
"Where's mom?"
"In the kitchen with Aunt Saidah".
"I'll go inside first, dad."
Before hers father had time to answer, Hanum had already run into the house screaming.
" Assalamualaikum ".
Hers mother and aunt Saidah together returned the greeting..
"Waalaikum greetings".
Hanum immediately kissed hers adoptive mother's hand and Aunt Saidah's hand.
"Aunty Saidah always hides her hands when I want to kiss her hands, ma."
Hers mother laughed at Hanum's grumbling. Aunty Saidah, a 50 year old woman, is a maid who has worked for 10 years in the family of Prof. Dr. Wijayanto and is considered like a member of hers own family.
"Why are Mama and Aunt Saidah in the kitchen? Let me prepare the food for dinner."
Hanum immediately pulled out 2 kitchen chairs.
"Mama and Aunt Saidah just sit here, listen to Hanum's story."
The two middle-aged women laughed. hers mother answered..
"What do you want to tell me, Mama's favorite child?"
Hanum cut the chicken meat while answering..
"I'm very happy, ma'am. Tomorrow 10 of my Al Qur'an students will take part in the Qatam Qur'an event at the Akbar Mosque, ma'am."
Aunt Saidah stacked plates of chili sauce l answered.
"Masya Allah, the beautiful virgin Hanum is now great thanks to the up bringing of Mrs and Sir."
Prof. Dr.'s wife. Wijayanto chuckled as she hugged hers maid's shoulder.
"What's great is that Aunt Saidah is diligent in teaching Hanum to read the Al Qur'an, now Hanum is a uztadzah at the mosque in front of this house."
Aunt Saidah smiled. Hanum screams...
"I'm cooking soy sauce chicken and carrot soup. It'll be ready in a moment."
Her mother smiled, it flashed in her mind that Hanum was a 13 year old little girl who was full of sadness when she and her husband brought Hanum into this house as an adopted child, now Hanum is 16 years old and is a pious Islamic girl who is beautiful, intelligent and proud with a lot of performance. Hers affection for Hanum truly cannot be doubted.
"Tomorrow afternoon, Mama and Aunt Saidah will come with me to the Akbar Mosque."
Her mother and Aunt Saidah looked at each other while answering...
"Yes, Uztadzah Hanum."
Hanum immediately turned around to see Aunt Saidah and her mother. Her clear round eyes widened and her tiny lips said...
"Call Hanum, don't do uztadzah Hanum."
Aunt Saidah and her mother burst out laughing, Hanum immediately propped hers chin and said...
"You two are cheating, bother me, right? I made hot chili sauce to make it spicy for both of you."
They both laughed even more when they saw Hanum's behavior in immediately making chili sauce.
"Come on, I'll just put the food on the dining table, Hanum."
"No, aunt Saidah. Let Hanum bring all the side dishes to the dining table."
Aunt Saidah smiled, she never thought that Hanum, her employer's adopted child, was really polite and respected her even though she was only a servant who worked in Hanum's adoptive parents' family.
"Okay, I'll call Raditya and Aditya to eat together."
"Yes, aunty Saidah. Thank you."
Hanum was very deft in arranging the side dishes, rice and drinking water on the dining table. Everyone was sitting around the dining table. Prof. Dr. Wijayanto touched his wife's shoulder..
"Ma, where is Aunt Saidah ? She should be sitting and eating with all of us."
"Yes, mom, call Aunt Saidah first."
Hanum immediately got up from the chair, hugging his mother's shoulder.
"Mama, just sit down and I'll go to the kitchen and call Aunt Saidah."
Hers mother sat back down.
"Yes, Hanum."
Hanum rushed into the kitchen, grabbed Aunt Saidah's hand.
"Come on, let's eat, Aunt Saidah. Papa and Mama are waiting."
Aunt Saidah could no longer refuse Hanum's invitation to the dining room. Hanum pulled a chair..
"Aunty Saidah just sat near me."
They ate together, indeed Prof Dr Wijayanto and his wife treated Aunt Saidah as part of their family. That's the reason Aunt Saidah feels more at home working in their family. After eating, Prof Dr Wijayanto said...
"Aunt Saidah sit down first, I have something to talk about."
" Yes sir ".
Prof. Dr. Wijayanto looked at his two sons.
"Thank God, Raditya and Aditya have graduated from high school. What college do you two want to study?"
Raditya, his eldest son, answered...
"Radit wants to study management in America, Dad."
Aditya's younger brother answered..
"Adit wants to study agriculture in Tasikmalaya, Dad."
Their papa answered.
"Okay, papa and mama sent Raditya to study management in America and Aditya to study agriculture in Tasikmalaya. We hope you two can focus on studying until you graduate."
Both twin boys answered at the same time..
"Yes, dad."
Hanum, with teary eyes, looked at his two adopted older brothers. While holding back tears, Hanum said...
Raditya and Aditya are studying far away and I'm here alone."
Everyone looks at Hanum. Indeed, since Hanum became their adopted younger brother, Hanum has become the favorite of his 2 adopted twin brothers. Aditya answered..
"When I'm on holiday, I'll definitely come back here, Hanum. Don't be sad, I'll give you a ride on my motorbike around this housing complex."
Hanum nodded while answering..
"Yes, Adit."
Raditya handed hers a plate containing mango pieces.
"Don't be sad, Hanum. I will be diligent in calling you and I promise to finish my studies in America as soon as possible so that I can quickly return to Indonesia."
Hanum's eyes twinkled as he looked at his two adopted brothers.
"It's true, Radit and Adit, don't lie to me, okay?"
The two older twins laughed while nodding.
Chapter.3.
Their papa looked at Hanum..
"Hanum, you are now in the 1st year of high school. How are your study activities.?"
Prof Dr Wijayanto's wife immediately answered.
"Dad, yesterday the principal called mom. She told me that Hanum is very smart. Hers achievements are very good. God willing, in the new school year, Hanum will jump a grade to be in the 3rd year of high school."
Everyone's eyes widened when they saw Hanum who was busy eating mango pieces. Unexpectedly, Hanum, who was only an adopted child, turned out to be very intelligent. Hers father asked...
"Alhamdulillah, this beautiful child, my father's favorite, is great. When you graduate from high school, what college do you want to go to, Hanum.?"
Hanum raised hers face to see hers father while screaming with joy.
"Dad, I want to go to college...".
Hanum immediately fell silent and did not continue speaking but instead looked down sadly. Hers mother turned to Hanum..
"Why are you suddenly silent, Hanum, my beautiful child.?"
Hanum shook hers head.
"I don't want to go to college, ma."
Everyone was surprised to hear Hanum's answer, Aditya immediately replied...
"That's it, Radit. When we graduate from college, don't come back to this house. Why would we meet a lazy younger sibling who doesn't want to go to college.?"
"Yes Adit, I'm embarrassed to have a lazy sister."
Hanum answered softly...
"Actually, I want to be like papa."
The two brothers asked at the same time...
"Like papa?"
Hanum answered softly...
"Yes, I want to go to medical school but it's very expensive. Should I just go to nursing school.?"
Suddenly both parents answered...
"No, Hanum."
Hers mother asked
"Why do you want to study medicine, Hanum? Why do you want to be like papa?"
Hanum shed tears, Hanum immediately hugged hers mother while answering..
"Because papa was a good person who took care of dad in the hospital, even though dad died of leukemia. Since then I want to be like papa, ma."
Hers mother tightly embraced Hanum, her adopted daughter. Hanum still answered softly...
"I want to be like papa. A good person who treats many patients, ma."
Prof. Dr. Wijayanto took off his glasses, rubbed his eyes, said in a hoarse voice holding back tears..
"Come here, Hanum."
Hanum approached hers father who immediately hugged him with great affection.
"You have to go to medical school, papa will pay for you until you graduate."
The girl answered..
"Poor papa has to pay for the lectures of Brother Raditya, Brother Adit and mine. I'll just take nursing school, Dad."
Hers father immediately answered..
"Since you became our child, Allah has bestowed much sustenance on papa and mama. This is Allah's way of helping us to continue to care for you and educate you until we both die, Hanum."
Hanum looked at his father who was smiling..
"Hanum, a month after we adopted you as our daughter, papa was immediately appointed director of the hospital."
Her mother interrupted...
"Hanum has to go to medical school, OK.? Look at Aunt Saidah who is painstaking in teaching you the Al Qur'an and helping to care for you. Allah cured Aunt Saidah of cervical cancer."
Hanum saw Aunt Saidah who was smiling and nodding. Hers mother pointed at Raditya and Aditya.
"Those are your two older siblings, since you became their younger sibling they were immediately enthusiastic about studying and excelling at school until they now want to go to college. Does Hanum want to disappoint us all.?"
Hanum shook hers head. Hers mother asked...
"Hanum wants to study medicine, right?"
"Yes mom".
Raditya patted his little sister's arm.
"You can go the achievement route and memorize the Qur'an, right.? It's free to enter college, you even get pocket money but you always have to be smart, later you can win a scholarship, Hanum.!"
"Really, Radit.?"
"Yes, there is a friend of mine who applied through the merit route and was accepted into medical school."
The girl jumped for joy..
" Yes I do '.
Hers father looked at Hanum.
"Hanum, papa is proud that you want to study medicine. The day after tomorrow we will visit the graves of your biological parents and in the afternoon we will hold a prayer event for both of them, my daughter."
"Yes papa, thank you."
_____
Prof. Dr. Wijayanto and his wife never play around when it comes to their children's education. They both allowed Raditya to study in America and Aditya to study in Tasikmalaya. Aditya, this handsome and intelligent student, was once the idol of the girls on campus, but Aditya remained focused on pursuing his studies even though Sinta Amelia, a student majoring in development economics, was crazy about him. All female students already know that Sinta Amelia is a spoiled girl with a strong character who always wants her wishes to be fulfilled because Sinta Amelia is an only child who has been spoiled by her parents since Sinta was little. Sinta Amelia has been friends with Lembayung Rindu since they were both at university. Sinta and Lembayung's steps stopped when they saw Aditya walking past them. Sinta immediately grabbed her friend Lembayung's hand.
"Come on, let's go to the canteen."
They both entered the cafeteria, Lembayung whispered....
"That's Aditya sitting alone. How about we sit with him, Sinta.?"
Sinta answered very enthusiastically.
"Yes, Lembayung."
The two of them rushed to Raditya's table, when Shinta wanted to sit next to Aditya, at that moment Lembayung immediately took the empty chair next to Aditya. Sinta's angry look at Lembayung was clearly visible in Sinta's eyes. Annoyed, Sinta was forced to sit on a chair in front of Aditya who was too busy eating meatballs. Sinta took courage and greeted the handsome student she loved.
"Aditya, when you finish eating... please take me home, okay?"
The handsome student was still chewing meatballs. Lembayung elbowed Aditya's hand.
"Aditya, let's watch a film."
Aditya immediately stood up but Sinta's hand grabbed Aditya's hand.
"You want to take me home now, Raditya?"
Raditya withdrew his hand while responding ..
"I don't know you two, but you two are very familiar."
Sinta and Lembayung really didn't expect Aditya to talk to the two of them like that. Aditya walked away leaving them still gawking. Sinta threw her bag on the table, surprising Lembayung .
"What are you doing, Sinta.? Just shock people."
Sinta stared sharply with anger at her friend Lembayung.
"I invited you to the canteen to accompany me, why are you so presumptuous as to sit next to Aditya?"
With an exasperated annoyance, he answered...
"Am I not allowed to sit near Aditya.? I have a crush on Aditya."
Violet's answer made Sinta feel as if she had been struck by lightning. Sinta's anger can no longer be stopped.
"I thought we were friends but why do you have a crush on Aditya even though you know I love Aditya."
Lembayung doesn't want to lose to his best friend, Sinta. His mouth sarcastically answered...
"You think you're the only one who can have a crush on Aditya, the idol student. Let's compete as to which of us can win Aditya's love?"
It was really painful that Lembayung's words made Sinta disappointed. Sinta kept her head down but in her heart said... you are my best friend but you made me hate you and I will definitely repay you for all your cheating on me, I miss Lembayung.
