"Emergency!" A voice called.
Kimimela sat in her nursing uniform behind the reception desk. She held a cup of coffee and was about to bring it to her lips when they heard the call. Ava stood beside her, holding a similar cup and they both abandoned their coffee to rush for the emergency room.
"The curtains," Doctor William said. He was there already. Kimimela immediately obeys, drawing the curtains closed. The man on the bed groaned, tossing his head. He had a large cut on his leg, it looked like something inflicted by a knife and it was bleeding badly.
"I think he's cut a vein, Doc," Ava said, her eyebrows pulled together as she grabbed scissors. "I'm going to cut away the cloth so we can see your wound properly, sir." She began to cut open the leg of his trousers.
Kim was reminded of a time when a different man lay in bed with a cut on his leg. He had been incredibly flirty and handsome and she had turned him down that time she met him. Now, she couldn't stop thinking about him- about Miran.
"Focus Kim!" Doctor William said, snapping Kim out of her daze. She blinked, everything coming back into focus. She scolded herself mentally for getting distracted.
"I need him cleaned up to access the damage. We might need to take him into the theatre for that wound. Go prepare one." Doctor Williams told her.
"On it," Kim glanced at Ava before hurrying out. She told a nurse to prepare an operating room while she told another to get the antiseptics and cotton wool for the emergency patient. Her mind was wandering and she couldn't handle a patient right now.
A sigh escaped her lips as she turned a corner. It's been two months since their break up, and she hadn't been able to forget him. Exhausted, she slumped into a chair in the waiting room and buried her head in her palms.
Miran hadn't even called or texted. Was it all in her head? Had she been the only one truly in love? Maybe they weren't both ready to reach other, she thought. Maybe Miran had moved on and found someone else.
The last thought brought a pang to her heart and caused her eyes to water.
God! She missed him, and every time she remembered him, she would stare at her phone, desperate to call him.
"Thinking about him, huh?" Ava asked, throwing herself into the space beside Kim.
Kim breathed heavily and looked at her.
"Oh, it's written all over that face of yours, you miss the shit out of him," She teased.
Kim rolled her eyes and leaned back, grabbing the bottle of water Ava held to her.
"You flew to Dubai and came back in tears after breaking up with him. That's insane," Ava continued, but Kim just sighed, frustrated. She didn't want Ava to bring it up again.
A door opened and Kim looked in that direction. She caught a reflection of herself in a glass window. Her eyes were dull, she had been working overtime trying to keep her mind off of Miran but, that had backfired on her now.
"Kim, Dr Williams would like to see you in his office," Sandra- a fellow nurse says.
Kim sighed again, "Thanks." She forced a smile and looked away. Her face fell, she knew he was going to scold her.
"Why?" Ava asked.
"I don't know," Sandra walked towards a water dispenser. She filled a cup and shut the door, "He is with Mrs Willy though. That's never a good combination." she adds.
Kim looks at Ava. Something was definitely up.
"Just go," Ava said.
Either way, she knew she was still going to go. Mr Williams was a boss to her and she couldn't ignore his call.
Kim got up and headed out. She walked the hallway leading to his office. At the door, she fixed her uniform severally and tried to pat down wrinkles. She took a deep steadying breath, before knocking on the door.
"Come in," She heard. Kim turned the knob and walked in. The office was empty, save for him. He sat in his chair and the moment she walked in, his eyes fleeted up to hers.
"Mr Williams," she swallowed the word.
"Ah, Kim... Have a seat," he says.
Kimimela's eyes met the chair he directed her to. She gave a faint smile and walked closer. Her tongue darted out to wet her lips before she finally sat down.
"You called for me" She practically whispered.
"Ah, yes. You've been... off your game lately. I see your head has been somewhere else. I wanted to know... Is everything okay?" He prodded.
Kim blinked lowering her gaze. "Yes, sir," she said.
"Are you sure?"
She looked up at him. "I am. I'm fine."
"You look exhausted, do you need some time off?" He asked.
His offer sounded so tempting but she wouldn't dare take it. This job distracted her from thinking about him. If she had free time on her hand, her thoughts would kill her. She was sane with work, at least, she told herself.
"No, I am fine," she continued. Mr Williams nodded.
"Well, that's not why you're here," He pushed his chair backwards, getting up. Kim's eyes followed him, till he stood behind her.
"Why am I here, sir?" Her voice shakes, and she squeezed her hands between her thighs. Her heart was racing. She warned herself not to misinterpret the situation.
"We need a few nurses who would volunteer for the African camping centre," He said.
Kim swallowed, this again? She had made it clear to him two months ago, that she wouldn't like to go. But then again, she had said no because Miran didn't want her going. She could give it a shot.
"Sir," she tried to look behind, but Mr Williams placed his hands on her shoulders to stop her. She froze at the act and her whole body went rigid.
He leaned forward and she could feel his breath on her neck. "You should think about this before replying," He whispered.
Kim sat there, worried about his hands on her shoulders.
"And," he moved away, walking back to his seat. "You should take the day off, you look exhausted. I won't have a nurse get sick," He leaned backwards, staring at her.
Kim managed a smile, surprised, "Yes, sir," she said without arguing.
Mr Williams returned the smile, she got up but her gaze fixed on his and, she could see him, staring at her lewdly. His gaze sent chills.
"I would think about it," she said, despite his gaze.
He nodded, and smiled, staring intently into her brown eyes.
Kimimela hurriedly made her way out of the office, and as soon as the door closed, she breathed out, loudly. She placed her hand against her chest.
She glanced around her and saw Ava standing at the end of the hallway. She was resting on the wall with her hands folded while she stared at her.
Kim walked closer to her and passed her Ava followed and they both headed toward the dressing room.
"What happened?" She asked.
"Nothing, he still wants me to attend the Africa camping," she said, shrugging. She wasn't going to tell Ava that he had thought her shoulders in a way that made her feel uncomfortable.
"And what? Are you going?" Ava asked, shutting the door behind them. Kim turned to her and breathed out.
"Well, I have no choice, do I?" She shrugged, Ava rolled her eyes. "It's supposed to be volunteer work but you and I know what that means if you're asked. I only got out because of Miran. I don't have him now." It hurt her to admit it.
"Bullshit," she spat, sitting down. Kim turned to her, and Ava slowly raised her gaze and found her staring at her with her eyebrows raised. "Don't look at me like that." she rolled her eyes.
"No sé cuál es tu problema," Kim said.(I don't know what your problem is)
Ava groaned loudly, shaking her head.
"Tienes que dejar de preguntar... como si no vieras la forma en que te mira." (You need to stop asking... Like you don't see the way he looks at you)
Kim turned over taking off her shirt, Ava watched her.
"Well, I do. Pero ese no es el punto, tal vez realmente esto," Kim replied. she took out her white polo. (that's not the point maybe I really need this)
"You are not going to forget that man if that's what you think." Ava swallowed.
"¡No lo dije, y esto no es por él, deja de hacer todo sobre él! She yelled, glaring at Ava. (I didn't say so, and this isn't because of him, stop making everything about him!) "Okay? Miran this, Miran that. I get it. You think he hurt me but, I broke up with him. I did that! Me! Don't make everything I do about him."
The blades of the chopper spun loudly before slowing down as it landed on the helipad of a skyscraper. The door was pulled open and Miran stepped out. He was clad in a black suit and black shades. Tony - his personal assistant - followed after him dressed in black as well.
He adjusted his suit jacket, looking around and taking in the view from up here. The city was magnificent. Tony came closer whispering to him, "He's over there."
Miran looked ahead before clearing his throat. The middle-aged Arab man coming towards him offered a small smile. Behind him, his escort followed.
"Mr Mayer, it's a pleasure to have you," The man said, stretching his hands to him. Miran stopped and looked at him, taking off his shades.
"Mr Khan," he smiled, a smile that seemed to have so many layers. "My father told me a lot about you." He continued.
Mr Khan's smile faltered but he managed to keep smiling before withdrawing his hand and folding them in front of him.
"This way," He said, bowing slightly.
Miran let a small smirk tug the corner of his lips before he put his sunglasses back on. He made for the door to the elevator.
After being escorted to the conference room, Miran made himself comfortable by sitting in the front row, where he could access everything without distraction.
Miran watched the people making a presentation. The lights had been turned off and the projector screen was the only source of light. Someone was speaking as the slides of the presentation changed. Mr Khan and his assistant seemed confused by the presentation. They sounded flustered, whispering among themselves and flipping through the documents that had been handed at the start.
Miran sighed and the room instantly became quiet.
"What's going on?" He asked, wondering why they had stopped.
"I'm sorry, Mr Mayer. But do you not like it?" Mr Khan asked.
"Where are the agents from Mexico? I need to speak to one," he said, placing his hands below his chin, while the other flipped a pen playfully.
"Um, they encountered some difficulties. And as a result, their flight was delayed, sir," he said.
Miran nodded and looked beside him. Tony had a blank expression.
"I want to buy a winery in Mexico, and you tell me the agents are not here today?" He questioned.
"Sir-" Mr Khan tried to speak, when Miran cut him short, replying.
"I left for UAE and came back here and you tell me, their flight got delayed? ain't they supposed to be here a day before I get to the US?" His voice grew louder, everyone remained silent and stiff.
The room was quiet and everyone had their heads down.
Angrily, Miran got up, throwing the pen at the projector screen. He stuffed his hands into his pocket and headed out of the room. Tony quickly followed behind, and the door shut.
"Mr Mayer!" Mr Khan followed, pleading.
Miran ignored the call and headed straight for the elevator. Mr Khan grabbed his shirt in desperation.
"Mr Mayer!" He caught his wrist. Miran stopped and Tony quickly pries his hands off him.
"Mr Khan, I believe this deal is over," he says. Tony's eyes grew slightly wide at his words, knowing how this was important to Miran. He couldn't believe what he just heard.
"I'm sorry, please give me another chance," he said, "I would make things right."
Miran sighed, staring at him. His eyes said it all as he glanced at him apologetically.
Miran's phone rings and he checks the caller ID. It's Aisha- Eisa's fiancee.
"Do it by Monday," he said before taking the call.
"Thank you! Thank you so much. You won't regret this." He gasped. Tony lets go of his hands and continued to the elevator where Miran walked into.
"Aisha?" He said into the phone.
"Oh, Miran..." She replied. "Sorry to bother you like this, Eisa didn't have time to, I just called to remind you about my wedding. In case you know who forgets."
"I'm sorry, I have been a little busy."
"You haven't informed Kim yet?" She asked.
Miran breathed calmly and pushed his other hand back into his pocket. He balled it into a fist. He could as well tell her the truth but decided to keep it to himself.
"Did something happen?" Aisha interrupted his thoughts, seeing how quiet he was on the phone. Miran side glanced at Tony.
"Nothin-"
"You didn't break up with her, did you?" She questioned.
Miran cleared his throat, remaining silent. "No way!" He heard her slam a door shut.
"Aisha..." Miran started.
"Don't worry, I won't tell Eisa," She assured. "But you had better fix this. I liked her and she would be perfect on my bridal train. Oh well, I guess there's nothing I can do."
"Thank you," He replied.
"Alright, do you want me to send the invitation to your place in Dubai or California?"
"Dubai," he said without hesitating.
The elevator dinged open, and Miran got out, heading out of the building. It's been two months since he was in California, and yet again, he was here for business. As he stepped out of the building, a man placed an umbrella over him.
The weather had changed so quickly since it was fall. He continued into the car, and when the car door closed, he relaxed, exhaling loudly.
"I would ride alone," he said, exhausted.
"Yes, sir," the driver replied, yet again. He was going to his place in California, the place he had shared so much with Kimimela. He wondered if it would feel different now, with so much of it having her before.
He gazed speechlessly out the windows and watched day fade into nighttime. The street light slowly came on as they approached his place. The ride seemed like a long one. He took out his phone scrolled through his contact and stopped at her number. She was still saved as lovely. His lovely.
The night she left him, everything seemed to change, but this didn't stop him from continuing to love her. He didn't know if he'd ever stop loving her.
The driver signified that they had finally gotten there
The sound of soft music resounded in the earpiece Kimimela had on as she walked into the elevator leading to her apartment she shared with Ava.
Her dark wavy hair draped over her neck, wearing a sports top and tracksuit over. Kim slowly walked into the elevator, refusing to take off her earpiece.
As the elevator tried to close, a hand quickly pushed the button and a young man walked in with a girl he held close.
"Hi" the lady said, Kim's gaze didn't shift.
The door closed, and with that Kim stared at the button hoping to know when she had reached the fifth floor. As soon the door opened, she stepped out with hesitation.
Approaching her apartment, she lowered the music, pressing in her pin.
The door opened and immediately she walked in, shutting it after her.
"You're back?"Ava asked, holding in her hand a glass of water, while she headed for the kitchen.
Kim takes off her earpiece in order to hear Ava clearly but something else had caught her attention instead, a bouquet of red roses sat on the table.
"What's that?" Kimimela asked, Ava looked at her and darts at the red rose.
"I have no idea... I found it at the entrance a while ago, it had your name so I took it in" Ava replied.
"My name?" She said, a little excited but her mind wondered who she would be receiving such from.
"Yeah, it says, Miss Cortes," Kim stopped, and Ava shrugged.
There's was only person who would address her that way, Miran Mayer.
She gulped, taking off the earpiece and dropping it on the table. Her lips tightened and her heart pounding fast.
She sat on a stool and took out the letter, reading it, the message said.
"Dinner - M." Kim looked at Ava, and squeezed the letter, breathing in and out softly.
"It's Miran right?" Ava asked, Kim avoided eye contact, grabbing her phone and earpiece.
"Dinner? Really?" She said.
"Oh, I love this guy... His confidence" She praised, Kim chuckled.
"I am not going"
"He didn't even give a location" Ava shook her head, saying.
I don't care, Ava... I still wouldn't be attending or seeing him that's final" Kim replied.
"Well, that's up to you, I just think he won't give up who knows he may come to work" Ava said.
"It's Miran I know he would but I won't give him a chance besides I should be going to Africa soon"
"You still insists on going, you know you're doing nothing in Africa you just really going to avoid him"
"Exactly and it's for the best" Kim said rolling her eyes sarcastically.
"So, this Africa, when do you intend on going" Ava asked.
"I am going to submit the form tomorrow is and Mr Williams want me to see him in his office" Kim said resting on the chair
"Mr Williams, Mr Williams, Mr Williams" she said rolling her eyes with a sarcastic laugh why she headed to the bedroom Kim glared at her.
After a while alone, Kim took out the letter staring at it. She smiled and when she cut herself smiling she squeezed it's tossing it to the waste bin and breathed, She immediately grabbed her phone and earpiece heading to the room it was a long night ahead for her and she needed to get prepared.
Evening came and Kim drove into the parking lot a soft sigh escapes her lips beside her was Ava both dressed in a white uniform Kim grab her bag pushing the door open.
"Night shift are becoming really tiring for me" Ava complained.
"You really do complain a lot" Kim said.
"I'm not complaining I just think I should have chosen this path it's so stressful being a nurse you must really like your job, Kim"
"I don't I just want to make money"
"Make money" Ava nodded, with a humming sound "Speaking of money... are you going to return Miran's car... I mean the car he bought for you which is now yours!" Ava said pointing at the car they had just gotten down from.
"Don't be stupid.. He didn't ask for it and who returns a gift?" Kim said with a small smirk.
"I don't know, the car you know cost millions of Dollars" she clarified.
Kim pouted, looking back at the car it did cost millions of Dollars but Miran had never asked her to return it, could she by the way? She thought.
Kim suddenly remembered when Miran had given her the car she claimed it was so expensive, it didn't seem like a big deal to her now why she asked herself.
The hospital door opened and Kim walked in with Ava, who yawned at the same time stretching, while she walked behind him.
"Good evening, Kim!" Sandra said, Kim looked her direction and waved.
"Good evening?" Ava asked at Sandra.
Sandra laughed, and waved saying, "Good evening, Ava? You look dull"
"A cup of coffee would wake her" Kim laughed.
"Oh Kim, you should check on Mr oldies, his heartbeat increased this morning doctor Williams wants you to take a look at him" Kim looked back and shrugged.
"Thank you Sandra I'll see to it" she replied, walking towards the dressing room.
"You're welcome, Ava here's yours" Sandra said handing her a piece of paper. Ava took it and smiled with a nod she replied.
"It's another busy day" faking an excitement with her hands shaky in the air.
Sandra shook her head giggling, "you're so dramatic" she stated.
Ava laughed and Sandra followed after her why she headed into the dressing room she closed the door behind her.
Should we have coffee after this?" Ava leaned on the door speaking to Kim who arranged her closet.
You should have coffee now, after this I'm heading home to take a long nap oh, that should be after I prepare a yummy dish" Kim close the locker and smiled. "I leave some for you?"
"Obviously, you know I can afford to eat alone outside, I'm single!" She exclaimed, earning a loud laugh from Kim.
"Makes the two of us" Kim said.
