Isabella's p.o.v
I stared at myself in the mirror, loving the way the maroon-colored dress accentuated my figure. Today was I and Liam's second wedding anniversary and his grandfather had organized a big party.
A sigh escaped my lips and my heart became heavy as I remembered the look of anger that crossed Liam's face when his grandfather mentioned the party.
Ever since his parents died, he changed the way he acted towards me. It was like the love he had for me had vanished completely.
A lone tear escaped my eyes and I wiped it off hastily, in a bid not to ruin my makeup.
A knock jolted me out of my thoughts and my friends, Bianca and Ava sauntered in with a bright smile on their faces.
"Congratulations on your anniversary darling. Your grandfather-in-law sure does know how to throw a party," Ava squealed, pulling me into a hug.
I chuckled, patting her back lightly. "He's still a party freak despite his age."
"You are one lucky woman, Isa. Not only did you marry one of the best men out there, but you also got one of the best in-laws. I wish my life was more like yours," Bianca chimed in, pouting.
I shook my head at her words. "Don't say that Bianca. Peter is a very nice man."
She scoffed, folding her arms under her breast. "You can have him then since you think he's so nice."
I rolled my eyes and made my way to my dressing table to pick up my purse.
"Now ladies, let's head downstairs."
As I got to the end of the stairs, Cynthia, the wife of Christian, the CEO of the Miller group of companies sauntered towards me, tucking a few strands of hair that fell out of place behind her ear.
Her eyes fell on my fingers and she let out a gasp, her hands flying over her mouth as she approached me. Pointing to my diamond ring, she shook her head and let out a soft chuckle. "I didn't know Isabella to be one who wears cheap things. Are you already going broke?"
I rolled my eyes in anger. Cynthia has always been in an imaginary competition with me. She was someone who always wanted to be in the spotlight but not tonight, I won't let her have her way this time.
A wry chuckle escaped my lips as I closed the distance between us. "My ring costs a fortune Cynthia and I'm sure it cost more than all your pieces of jewelry combined together. It isn't about how fancy it looks dear Cynthia," I whispered into her ears and watched as her face contorted into a frown.
Before she could argue, I patted her on the back and left her side.
My eyes darted through the hall frantically searching for Liam as I fiddled with my fingers anxiously.
I felt a tap on my back and turned my head to see who it was.
"Who are you searching for so intently? Is something wrong?" Bianca said with a sly smile on her lips.
I tried to speak but a thick lump formed in my throat and all I could do was shake my head.
Different thoughts raced through my mind causing my heart to palpitate in fear. "I was sure that I reminded him of the anniversary yesterday. How could he not be here? I never complained when he forgot my birthday and other events in my life but this, this is too much. God! What do I do now?
How did things go from bad to worst between us in a span of a few months?
Ava reached out and took hold of my arm. "Isa, are you okay? You are shaking."
I took deep breaths trying to control my emotions. "I'm... I'm fine," I managed to voice out.
My eyes fell on the glass of wine in Ava's hand and I snatched it from her, gulping it at a go.
Wiping the corners of my lips, I handed her back the glass. "Excuse me, girls. I need to make a phone call."
"Isn't your husband going to come? I haven't seen him yet," I heard Bianca yell as I hurried out of the hall.
With shaky hands, I removed my phone from my purse and dialed Liam's number but I was left with a message that said his number wasn't available.
Tears stung the back of my eyelids as I swirled my wedding ring around my finger. "Does he hate me this much not to even grace our anniversary with his presence?"
I decided to head to his office to see if he left a clue as to where he could be right now.
As I climbed each stair, my breathing became shallow as though the air around me was closing in on me. I held the rails and dragged each foot clumsily onto the next step.
I soon reached the top of the stairs and made my way to his office. On getting to his office door, I could see fragments of light seeping through the door, which assured me that he was either inside or forgot to turn off the lights.
Placing my hand on the doorknob, I slowly turned it and pushed the door open.
For a second, I thought I was having a problem with my eyesight. I squeezed my eyes shut, hoping it was all just a fragment of my imagination and the sight before me would disappear.
But as I opened my eyes, the harsh reality remained- there he was holding another woman as they both stared into each other's eyes, giggling.
My insides churned as I took in the sight before me. Slowly, he turned to look at me and when his eyes met mine, my heart shattered into a million pieces.
His face was devoid of any emotions as he stared at me with clenched jaw.
Without taking his hands off the waist of the woman who buried her face in his chest, his voice echoed through the whole room causing me to shudder.
"Why are you here?"
A wave of dizziness washed over me and I staggered backward, trying hard to find my balance.
"Oh God, this can't be happening. Please let this be a dream." I muttered as I shook my head.
"Are you deaf?" he asked, with disgust evident in his voice.
My eyes traveled over the face of the woman whose hands were wrapped around him. When my eyes met hers, it felt like I had been hit.
"Li... Lilly?"
A sinister smile crept onto her lips. "Thank you for taking care of my man these past few years."
With my heart thudding in fear and anger, I glanced at Liam who was staring at me with a stoic expression.
"Why is she here? Why is she in your arms? What's happening here?" I yelled with so much anger.
With her arm still wrapped around him, she responded. "Nothing is happening here. He is just back where he belongs."
Tears pricked the back of my eyelids as my lower lips began to wobble. Every part of me wanted to crumble and burst into tears but I would never give Lilly the satisfaction of her knowing she's the cause of my pain.
I sniffled in my tears and turned to Liam. "You are a clown Liam, a very big one. Of all the women to cheat on me with, you decide to cheat with the very woman that left you at your lowest? The woman who ruined you and left you to suffer?"
Liam raised a brow and the blank expression on his face made every part of me crumble to pieces.
"Answer me, Liam! Answer me!" I yelled.
Slowly, Lilly released her arms around Liam and strutted towards me with her hips swaying side by side.
"Stop yelling, you are frightening my baby," she said, rubbing her belly.
Isabella's p.o.v
I froze staring at her belly with my jaws dropped. I couldn't believe what I had just heard. A baby?!
"Please tell me this isn't true Liam?" I pleaded.
Liam approached me, taking long strides towards me. Making my heart beat so fast with every step he took.
All I wanted from him was to tell how how everything was a lie, that it was all a joke, and that he still loved me very much.
"Stop acting clingy Isabella. It's time for you..."
Before Lily could complete her words, Liam lowered his head slightly with his eyes still fixed intently on me and shoved an envelope into my hands.
"Here. Sign these, so we can end this sham of a marriage."
His words were like arrows that pierced through my heart, causing my heart to ache so much in pain.
With wobbly fingers, I brought out the paper which had the word "DIVORCE" boldly written on it and the tears I had been holding back streamed down my face.
I wanted to yell, to curse but I couldn't find the strength to do so. How could Liam treat me this way? How could he disrespect me in this manner?
My eyes landed on the wedding picture that was hung on the wall and I plunged forward to hug him.
"No, I refuse to believe this is you Liam. What happened? Are you being threatened?" I wailed, with my head buried in his chest. "Talk to me please."
Despite all I've heard and seen, I wanted to believe he wasn't doing this of his own accord, that he was forced to do this against his wish. I wanted to believe Liam would never hurt me in this manner.
I noticed that he didn't flinch from my hug and I hugged him harder, burying my head deeper into his chest. Seeking the comfort that only he could give.
Suddenly, he grabbed me by my shoulders and shoved me hard away from him, making me clash with his shelf of books.
"Enough of this rubbish, Isabella. Sign the damn thing and let's get this over with," he said, his words cutting through me like a knife
With a blank expression, I stared at the divorce papers.
The room felt suffocating and I was lost for words, wondering how everything could just go down the drain in a couple of months.
Taking a deep breath, I reached for the pen on his table as tears followed seamlessly from my eyes.
"I can't believe you're doing this," I whispered, my voice trembling, as I signed the paper.
I wiped my tears and raised my head, looking both of them in the eyes. "I hope you both never find happiness."
As I turned to leave, Lily's malicious laughter filled the air but I paid no heed to her and strutted out of his office.
I got to my room and met Bianca and Ava on my bed.
Ava rushed towards me with concern in her eyes. "We thought you were with Liam having a swell time. Why does it look like you've been crying? What happened?"
I shook my head. "Nothing happened, I'm fine. It's just hormones. Please I'd like to rest a bit if you don't mind."
They both looked at me as if I was crazy. "But... what about the party?" Bianca asked, with a raised brow.
I sat on the bed, removing my shoes and my jewelry. "Grandfather will handle that."
"Alright, we will leave now."
Immediately I heard the door shut, I stripped every layer of my clothing off my body lazily, refusing to cry and refusing to pity myself.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door which made my heart skip.
Liam? Was he back? Did he come to apologize?
I hurriedly picked up my robe and wore it. I hurried to the door with different thoughts running through my mind.
"Did he realize his mistake? Was he here to apologize? I knew he wouldn't hurt me this way."
As I turned the doorknob, the smile on my face disappeared when I saw the housekeeper with an envelope in her hands.
"Ma'am, this envelope was delivered to the house earlier in the day but due to how busy the house has been, I forgot to give it to you," she said, stretching the envelope to me.
Trying to hide my disappointment, I forced a smile. "Thank you."
"Would you like anything else?"
"No, that would be all," I replied, sighing deeply.
As soon as I shut the door, I leaned against the door, taking deep breaths as I tried to hold back my tears.
I stared at the envelope in my hands and impatiently brought out the paper enclosed within it.
My hands flew over my mouth as I let out a gasp. "I am... I am pregnant?"
I rubbed my eyes with my hands to be sure I was seeing right.
"I am pregnant!" I said out loud, with excitement gushing through my veins.
At that moment, all the anger, despair, and sadness I was feeling disappeared immediately.
Without wasting another second, I returned the paper back into the envelope and headed to Liam's bedroom.
I sprinted to his bedroom, my heart leaping with excitement. However, as soon as I got to his door, I met Lily in the hallway in her lingerie.
She rolled her eyes and kissed her teeth. "What the hell are you doing here? He said he doesn't want you anymore. How shameless can you be?"
Anger began to course through me and all I wanted to do was smack her hard on the face. Who the hell does she think she is?
Ignoring her, I walked past her and was about to turn the doorknob when she grabbed me by my hair and pulled me back.
"Are you deaf? I asked why you are here?"
With eyes blazing with fury, I yelled at her. "How dare you touch me? You have no right whatsoever to stop me from entering into my husband's room."
"You better leave my way now or else I'll scream the whole house down."
She laughed manically. "Oh Isabella, you are one dumb bitch. Liam stopped loving you a long time ago after your silly escapades with your lover."
I looked at her in confusion. "Escapades? Lover? What.. what are you talking about?"
"Follow me," she said, leading the way.
I followed her because it seemed I was finally going to get some answers as to why Liam changed suddenly.
We got to his office and she turned to stare at me. "Look inside the bin," she said, with a malicious smile on her lips.
I raised a brow, wondering where she was going with this.
I huffed. "Enough with your games Lily. Get straight to the point."
She walked across me and returned with the trash can. "Take a look and tell me what you see."
I stared into the trash and the sight before me made my eyes to water causing my vision to be blurry.
"Now that you know the truth, you should stop being pitiful and just go back to your lover."
Ignoring her words, I continued staring at the trash, unable to get rid of the sight before me.
I thought he had misplaced it because every time I asked him about it, he was evasive but here it was, Liam's wedding ring had been here the whole time.
Liam's p.o.v
I sauntered down the stairs, massaging my temple due to the sharp pain in my head. My eyes caught sight of Bella sitting next to my grandfather and a wave of anger coursed through me.
My grandfather shot me a glare as soon as his eyes landed on me. He reached for a paper that was on the table and threw it at me.
"I think I deserve an explanation for this rubbish going on."
I picked up the paper and saw that it was the divorce paper. I ran my fingers through my hair in anger and walked towards where they were seated.
"There's no need for explanation. It's exactly as what you have read."
My grandfather scoffed. "You are not divorcing Bella for any reason whatsoever. Whatever is on that paper is null and void."
I bit the corner of my lips in an attempt to control my anger and turned my gaze to Bella who quickly lowered her gaze as soon as we locked eyes.
"You went to report to grandfather because you don't want a divorce? How childish can you be Isabella? Why are you stressing an old man over something that's already done and settled?"
She shook her head in denial as she stared back at me with anger in her eyes. "Why would I bother Grandpa with something like that? I only told him about it as I was leaving the house and he asked me to stay until he speaks with you."
"You lying bitch," I yelled in anger.
Suddenly, Grandfather stood up and walked threateningly towards me while waving his finger at me. "Shut you! How dare you speak to Bella this way? What has gotten into you? Do you know the sacrifices Bella made to make sure you were sane and happy after we lost my children; your parents? How dare you pick that gold digger over her? Over my living body would that social climber step foot into this house, you hear me?"
I clenched my fist in anger, for every derogatory word he called Lily, I could feel my anger rising to the top.
"Enough of the insults! What has Lily done to warrant all of these? She has been nothing but kind to you and always trying to get your approval even before I got married but yet all you've ever done is to call her names and try to bring her down," I yelled back at him.
I turned my gaze towards Isabella and let out a bitter chuckle. "This woman here is the pretender and hypocrite. When Mom and Dad died, when I needed comfort the most, she was out visiting her lover in his home and going on different dates with him."
"What?" Isabella and my grandfather both echoed at the same time.
Isabella stood up from the sofa and walked towards me. "How can you stoop so low to peddle such silly cheap lies against me? I won't let you tarnish my name just because you want a divorce. Enough!"
"I have known Bella for years, even before you two got married. Do you think I would believe these silly lies you and that wench cooked up? Be a man and sort your marriage out," my grandfather said sternly, as he glared at me menacingly.
"If you love Isabella so much, why not marry her for yourself? My decision is final!" I said, frustrated at how he was trying to control me.
"Liam!" Isabella yelled as she stared at me with her mouth slackened as tears rolled down her cheeks.
The look of disbelief and shock in my grandfather's eyes made my heart twinge a bit. I wanted to tell him that I didn't really mean what I had just said but at the same, I wanted to stand my ground to let him know that my decision was final.
I don't love Isabella anymore, I only loved her momentarily when Lily left but now that she's back my heart only beats for her. Why can't they see that? Why can't they understand that?
Grandfather shook his head and closed his eyes for a moment. "I wonder where we went wrong raising you. Go do whatever you like but just know you aren't bringing that woman into my home or company. If you insist on divorcing Bella and marrying that woman, then you'll have to step down as the president."
And with that, he left. I turned to Isabella and made sure the anger and hatred I felt were well depicted on my face.
"You see what you have done? You have succeeded in making the only family I have left hate me. Congratulations Isabella! I f**king hate you. Just leave already, haven't you done enough?"
Her lips wobbled as tears began to stream down her face with her voice slightly above a whisper. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean for any of this to happen. I will go talk to him, you are his grandson, I am sure he only said those words out of anger. Everything I have done for you, I did because I love you, I don't know where I went wrong or what happened but I have always loved loved and I still love you. Please, Liam, let us fix this, let us fix us. I am ready to do whatever you want."
I let out a wry chuckle. "You will do whatever I want right? Then let me go. I am tired of this marriage I do not want it anymore. I just want to be with the woman I love. You also have someone you love, why not just go to him? Why are you making things difficult for both of us?"
She shook her head in denial. " why do you keep saying that? I do not love anyone else. You are the only person I have ever loved since high school."
I let out a tired sigh and turned to leave. "Enough of this Bella."
But before I could take any step, She grabbed me by the arm and pulled me towards her with great force. "Please Liam, just listen to me. I swear I have never cheated on you, believe me, please. I have only ever loved you my whole life. Please don't destroy what we have built based on assumptions."
"I do not want to hear any more of this. Let me go!" I said, struggling to release myself from her grip.
Despite my several attempts to release myself from her grip, she persisted and wouldn't let go of me. With my anger already growing, I pushed her forcefully away from me.
As Isabella stumbled backward, a soft thud echoed through the room and an unexpected cry filled the room.
A gasp escaped my lips and my eyes widened in shock as I took in the sight before me.
With tears still streaming down her face, her head collided with the table, and she crumbled to the floor.
I rushed over to where she lay on the floor and my breath caught in my throat when I saw blood trickling down her forehead, staining the floor with her eyes pressed tightly together.
