Chapter 1 Her morning

One of the things she hated to see were mornings.

Not that she did not appreciate the wonderful colour the sky had at that time nor did she detest the quiet peaceful and calm nature of the mornings, it's caused by her present predicament which made her extremely grumpy in the mornings.

She cursed under her breath as she finally obeyed her alarm clock and sat up on her bed.

Her orange red hair stuck out messily and wildly as if she just stopped fighting with someone that was putting up a good fight with her.

A yawn escaped from her lips whistle stretching.

"Today's not going to be any different. I'm already tired." She mumbled to herself.

She finally snooze the alarm clock which had when off again.

She yawned again before climbing down her bed and into the shower.

As the water poured down from the shower and to her head then down her pale skin to the ground, her senses woke up.

Her vision became more clearer and her hearing.

It was quiet. That only meant that her mother, Karen was still sleeping.

Her hair was tamed then as it fell to her shoulders and back.

She used her hands to comb her hair which had turned honey and it easily gave in to her wishes. She repeated it for a good number of times as she loved the feeling she got from it, before stopping.

She had to mentally remind herself that she has to save water. They could not afford another water shortage that had happened three months ago.

Everyone needs to save water.

*****

After shower, she went to pick a dress. She doesn't really have many choices actually, just between three dresses, blue, yellow and black then two jeans and a white t-shirt.

Not that much.

She decided to go for the black one. The reason is because it's the only one that's completely dried. The rest aren't wet actually as she washed them the day before but hanged them on her wardrobe.

They felt as if they were sunned with dew and felt cold. That wasn't what she needed. What she needed wasn't what made her remember she doesn't have enough clothes.

The black dress was a plain one with no design expect the bottom which was printed.

She wore it then walked to her wall mirror which hung opposite her bed close to her vanity table. She picked up her hair brush and combed her hair gently. After, she tied her hair up in a tight ponytail.

She again looked at her appearance on the mirror. Her emerald green eyes stared back at her.

Her make free face looked worn out and pale. No dark circles but anyone can easily tell by her eyes she's suffering.

Her hair was tied up tightly but it was as if she could feel no pain. Down her body, the black dress hugged her although it wasn't made to do that but seeing as she's been wearing it for a long time now without throwing it away or giving it to someone younger, the dress had become tighter on her.

She silently prayed it did not tear or loose anytime soon. If it did then it means she'll have to sow it and if she's going to sow it she'll need a needle and thread and for that she'll have to use money from which she intended on using for something else.

The dress appearance on it's own will tell you it's begging for freedom as it's colour was worn out. Black getting worn out? You did not know that right? Well neither did she but now she knows.

She sighed. Her appearance only says she needs help desperately but what else can she do? Perhaps someone will pity her and help.

"No!"

She screamed at herself.

"I've got to be independent and help myself." She argued with herself and if it was possible she wished she could slap her mind for ever thinking of something like that.

She wasn't independent before and look where she is now.

"I must help myself." She said in encouragement to herself.

With that she left the mirror and made her way out her room and to the kitchen leaving her reflection that was so pitiful that her old self would have gaged to see herself right now.

How did she get from the most beautiful to the most pitiful?

Well this is probably another story of from riches to rags but there's a difference in it.

*****

In her barely equipped kitchen which only had a small gas and plates, pot and pan. The cupboards were almost empty. Only two cereals and a half pack of already opened spaghetti were inside.

There wasn't any mechanical equipment to assist and every dish was to be prepared without them.

Although it was more tasty and delicious that way but it can get exhausting especially when you're already tired from work.

She took out the pot then took it to the sink and opened the tap. When the water entering the pot filled up to were she desired she stopped it then return to the gas stove.

She lit up the stove then placed her pot of water on it for it to boil.

She walked to the living room which was after the hallway that led to hers and her mother's bedrooms.

The wall clock said it was seven o'clock so she has to wake her mother.

She strode to her mother's room and entered without knocking expecting to see her sleeping soundly on her bed but to her surprise, she was sitting patiently on her bed. Waiting..?

"Mom?" She said but more of a question, "did you not sleep?"

"Oh I did dear." Her mother stated. "I only just woke up early so it won't be much trouble for you to wake me." She replied. A small smile on her face as she spoke.

Her face had some winkles on her cheeks and forehead. She looked old and pale.

Definitely not the young and beautiful woman of before.

"Did you take your medicine?"

Her mother nodded and she smiled.

It seems her mother is getting better.

*****

While eating the spaghetti she prepared with her mother in their dinning room which was immediately after the kitchen, she got a notification which she identified as a text message.

Looking at her phone screen which displayed half of the text, she clicked on it as it seemed to have interested her.

No doubt it would as it was from her only friend Rin.

She must have texted her this morning for something important and that she has to know.

The text read:

Meet me at the coffee shop ASAP! I think I've got something you could do to help in the meantime *smiley emoji*

"Mom, I've got to go. Promise you'll take care of yourself." She announced.

"But you haven't eaten much from your food. Look at you, you're too skinny! How will you work?"

"Exactly mom, work! Work has drained my appetite and I have to leave now to get one. So sorry mom but take good care of yourself until the sitter comes Kay?" She said then went over to kiss her mother, Karen's forehead. "Bye."

Karen only nodded then she walked away.

The reason why Happiness hates morning is because she has to leave her dreams and continue living in her current poor situation that seems everlasting and struggle.

She had to continue this life.

Chapter 2 Friendship plus

HAPPINESS POV

She sat down carefully on the sit opposite her friend Rin. Her purple purse was placed on her thigh after she settled down.

They were separated by a round plastic table. Just two chairs were around which both Rin and Happiness occupied.

They sat at a table outside the cafe. Behind Rin's head was a sign which introduced the cafe.

Welcome to Michelle's Cafe.

Happiness's eyes wandered around the place. She noticed the waiters and waitresses taking people's orders around them. Soon it would be their turn.

"So Rinny, it's on you right?" Happiness smiled sheepishly at her friend. Taping the same table with her index finger, she waited for Rin's reply.

"No way, you ate this morning right?" She replied.

"Yeah I did." Happiness sighed. Disappointment was written all over her face but it only lasted for half a second before she masked it with a serious one. "In the case spit it out so I can scram." Rin's her only friend that stuck to her from before when everything went downhill for her and her family. Rin's from a rich family but it seems she's very stingy with her money. It should have been a reason for Happiness to stay away from her both she can't. She needs an ally. Lie. She needs a friend and was desperate; loneliness was not a thing she ever felt and it killed her.

Besides, she's just stingy that is all. Former Happiness would have stopped talking to her if she noticed that character but she does not want to be at all like her former self. Her characters of before only made friends like herself. Friend that would abandoned you in times of need.

They're friends so she has to accept her regardless of her trait. Right?

"Okay but if you really need coffee I'll buy." Rin offered. Regardless her disappointed expression lasted for just half a second, it was still noticed by Rin. She went red and pity was evident on her eyes.

But Happiness hates pity. She sat up straight then fidgeted with her purple purse as disgust and embarrassment overwhelmed her. Her face turned red as a tomato in minutes.

"No probs I'm good just continue." She cleared her throat and replied. She doesn't need anyone's pity. Although they are struggling, they still have a roof over their heads and were not begging so they don't need pity but real and genuine help.

She's young and alive, she can work for her family and if someone wants to help out it's acceptable but not pity.

The air was tensed for them.

"Okay well you probably won't like this." Rin continued, "It's a job you can definitely do now, I'm sure but I'm guessing you still won't like." Rin rambled around.

"look you could do it once and get your pay then leave." She suggested.

"Rin can I at least know the job? Who knows if you're setting me up to do drugs." Happiness joked. She hated pity yes, but she hated being uncomfortable and when her friends are uncomfortable even more. Well this characteristic was recent.

"Hey I would never." Rin defended and faked hurt and placed her hand on her chest. She joined in on the joke not letting Happiness attempt to clear the air go to waste.

"Who knows coming from you, especially how you're explaining things for me it's like you're some gangster recruiting messengers." Happiness chuckled.

"Well you're wrong sweetheart." She announced. "It's a cleaning job." Rin declared. "And you know I ramble nonsense when I'm anxious so shut up."

"You want me to be a maid?" Happiness repeated. Any trace of smile on her face was gone then as she wore a serious look.

"Wait listen up first, I'm sure you know of this newly built mansion down street right?" Rin tried to explain. Her nervousness was back and her smile gone as well.

"Yes?"

"Well It's offering a one time cleaning position to clean the place up today. The owner is joining us here in Eden today so they need the place spotless. Although I heard that they might hire some workers to work for them permanently but you could just go for the one time offer and get paid." Rin said at once.

"Hmm." Happiness leaned towards the table and placed her elbow on top then placed her chin between her index finger and thumb as she positioned herself like she was thinking. And she was.

"The pay is good Happy." Rin added then it was her turn to smile sheepishly.

"Well you're right, I need money. Money to buy so many things a also clothes. This one almost giving up on me." She gestured to her black dress. She gave in. Any job will have to do. Karen's medicine were almost finished and she needs money for groceries. Her money at and bank could not survive them for a complete month even if they ate twice a day.

"Exactly."

'And I believe I'll still need a steady job. Maid will just have to do. It would have all been easy if I have a college degree.' Happy thought.

"I'm sorry this is hard for you." Rin apologized.

"And you're apologizing because?" Happiness smiled. 'She's really sweet and I'd probably have gone insane without her by my side.' Happiness thought.

"Well because..." She thrilled off.

"Oh Rinny; I would have been insane without you." Happiness confessed. She towards Rin and took her hands in hers. "Thank you for not leaving me like the rest. I'll forever be grateful for that and I won't know what I would have done without your help."

"Oh stop this now Happy before you get me crying. It was nothing and you're a good friend too so we're even. Besides friends help out and stay in times of need so please don't thank me for anything." Rin smiled.

"I'm sorry but you'll have to forgive me cause I'll always thank you. Just staying by my side alone is enough for me dear. So please don't apologise for nothing cause you did something. Thank you."

Rin stared at her friend for a while.

There was silence but it wasn't uncomfortable as both of them stared at each other with happy eyes.

"Let me buy you lunch, yeah?" Rin offered.

Chapter 3 The past yet present

HAPPINESS POV

Happy walked aimnessly on the side walks on the street. The printed part on her dress bonced along. She had passed a sign stating clearly that if she continued along that path straight ahead she'll be STEPPING foot on 'HOLY GROUNDS' Street.

She had walked straight ahead. 'HOLY GROUNDS' Street was a place she knew very well. A nice beautiful street in Eden.

Yes she knows that street very well as it was the street she had grown up in. Every second she spent in her childhood was spent there. Her school, church and house, no correction, mansion, were there.

The street is called 'HOLY GROUNDS' Street because it was believed especially by Christians, that it was a place god visited regularly in the early days of creation and no one knew who gave them that idea that they believed.

Nevertheless, the rich had seen the beauties in the street and had dominated on the street.

The rent on that street, now that she has little money, was stupidly high in her opinion and everyone who valued their money which was earned through hard work and sweat left leaving only the rich people.

The rich people like Happiness's parents.

The environment around her wasn't new but familiar yet she felt a pit in her stomach as anxiety and uncertainty overwhelmed her in the territory.

As lasted cars like Ferrari, Mercedes etc zoomed by, she felt her temperature go up.

Nevertheless, she continued ahead. She needs a job and she'll get one.

Rin had given her the address of the mansion looking for workers.

She knew that place by heart.

56 HOLY GROUNDS STREET.

Right after the house at 55 HOLY GROUNDS STREET.

What was this? Was her past indirectly taunting her?

*****

She stopped exactly at house 56 and for no reason, glance at house 55.

The huge silver like gate was open widely for anyone to enter.

She let herself in and walked through it. It was then the noise hit her.

Everyone was busy moving here and there and no one even noticed she stepped in.

"Shouldn't there be a security guard?" She thought out loud.

"And there is." Someone said behind her and she jumped. She turned back to face a pot bellied man in his thirties. He wore a uniform, blue top and black for his pants.

His hazel eyes, brown hair and warm smile on his face was all too familiar.

"Ezekiel!" She exclaimed in joy and recognition.

"The one and only guard." He said. "Now what are you doing here? How's your mother? Where do you stay now?" He asked excitedly. It has been a while since he has seen them.

"I'm happy to see you too Ezekiel." She said instead. But no, referring to him by his first name won't do now. "Sir." She corrected.

"Ezekiel." He corrected as well. "You'll always be the little ma'am to me no matter your status." He replied.

"Really now? So you'll always regard me superior to you?" She inquired sadly. The fact that she's at the same level...no lesser his level is saddening and heart stabbing for her. The fact is that she is and that's that. No need for any pity.

"No that's not what I meant sweetie." He tired explaining but Happy caught him off short.

"You don't need to regard me any higher than yourself, right now I believe I'm even less." She confessed.

Ezekiel looked sadly down at the broken girl in front of him. Happy was and is like a daughter to her. She's broken yes but that's just now. It's now his mission to rise her spirits.

"I came here for a cleaning job." She added.

"So? I still don't get why you're this down because you came here to clean? I've been working as a guard for the longest time possible but I don't care. It's a honest way of making money and it helped take care of my family." He placed a hand on her right shoulder then continued. "As far as you're not selling drugs or anything illegal, it's good money. Oh and cleaning where people step doesn't makes you less, it only humbles you. Just because we work for people doesn't mean we're less okay? Our bodies and mind are the same." Ezekiel said inclusion of his sermon.

Happy smiled. He was right! She has to fight and humble herself. How could she still think about status at this time? Haven't she learn anything?

She hugged him tightly. "Thank you for your sermon." She said and he laughed. She joined with a smile then added, "It was really needed. Thank you." She appreciated.

"Don't worry about it dear. I'll from now on be there for you okay?" He inquired. He very well knows how Happy gets when someone says something not agreeing with her current emotions.

She nodded. She knew better now. She's not like before and she's trying to be better. What better way to do that than for someone as good as him to help out?

"Now enough of the boring sermons." He chuckled. "Let me show you to where you need to be."

She nodded and was then lead by Ezekiel forward.

It was then she took in the place she was.

There was a path cemented which lead from the gate to the main entrance of the mansion. Grasses, trees, flowers were all around the area which wasn't cemented.

The house was painted in silver white.

It was very huge, beautiful and familiar. Too familiar.

"Guess maybe it was the same architect?" Ezekiel said interrupting her thoughts.

"Huh?" She furrowed her brows in confusion.

"The house. It's just exactly the same as yours." He explained. "The same decorations and interior design. I believe our new boss is a copycat."

"Who is he?" She asked.

"No one knows but I have a strange feeling we all know him. Very well."

How strange.

She has a hunch now that he's right. So right.
