Chapter 1 The Accident

The night enveloped the lonely road like a dark and relentless shroud. The rain poured down without mercy, pounding the asphalt, creating puddles that reflected the distant headlights like shattered mirrors. The silence was torn apart by the roar of an engine, the screech of tires, and then... the terrible crash of metal against metal. The world shattered in a single second.

The car lay overturned on the side of the road, its windshield shattered, smoke rising from the engine. Silence took over once more, only interrupted by the relentless drumming of the rain. And amidst it all, a figure struggled weakly. Ana. Her body was broken, wounded, but her soul still seemed to cling desperately to life.

Every breath was a titanic effort. Every heartbeat ached. The pain burned through her, but what hurt the most was the confusion. How had she ended up here? Why did everything feel so... distant? Her blurred, tear-filled eyes locked onto the ceiling of the overturned car. A whisper escaped her lips, weak, almost inaudible, as she tried to recall something important.

-Sebastián... Gabriel...

Why those names? Her mind screamed for answers, but her body refused to respond. What did they mean? The words slipped from her lips as if they were fading before they could be fully spoken. She didn't understand, but her heart recognized them as if they were carved into her skin, into her very soul.

-Why...?- Her thoughts tangled like broken threads. A crushing weight of fear settled over her chest. What happened here?

A distant thunderclap echoed through the sky, rumbling inside her as if the heavens themselves were mourning for her. Her head spun, and the world blurred into a sea of shadows. The rain hammered down harder, as if the earth itself was trying to swallow her whole.

-I can't die here... not now... not without... What happened to them?- she questioned herself, wrapped in a growing desperation. Sebastián... Gabriel... The names repeated in her mind like a mantra, yet they became more and more distant.

Suddenly, a faint glimmer caught her attention. In her trembling hand, something metallic reflected the dim light that managed to pierce through the storm. A pendant. The initials "G.S." engraved on it. Something inside her cracked. That pendant. Why was it in her hand?

Sirens began to wail in the distance, but to Ana, they seemed like a distant echo, as if the voices of the world were reaching her from a fading dream. Her body grew heavier with every passing second. The pain pulled her toward unconsciousness, but something-a spark of awareness-kept her afloat. She couldn't give up.

In the distance, the red and blue lights of the ambulances cut through the storm, but Ana could no longer move. Her mind, which had once fought to understand what had happened, now clung desperately to a single thought, a single hope: that someone was near. Someone who could save her. But who?

When the paramedics arrived, they handled her gently, almost reverently, as if she were fragile and precious, a piece of glass on the verge of shattering. One of their voices reached her, piercing through the haze, but she couldn't understand the words.

-"Ana, take a deep breath. Stay calm. You're going to be okay. We're here."-

But how could she believe them? The pain stabbed into every inch of her body. Her breathing was erratic, and her chest felt as if it were about to explode. Everything felt like a dream, but the pendant remained clutched in her hand, held tightly. Why couldn't she remember?

The paramedics worked swiftly and efficiently. One of them placed an oxygen mask over her face, and a shiver ran through her body. The rain drenched her, but the cold she felt came from within.

-"Ana, hold on... You're not alone."- a man's voice reassured her. She wanted to say something, but the words wouldn't come. Tears mixed with the rain on her face, blending her pain with the never-ending storm.

How had she ended up here? The world blurred before her eyes, but in her mind, one image remained, refusing to let her go: Sebastián's face in the dim light and Gabriel's eyes, filled with something she couldn't comprehend. Why were they in her memories? What role did they play in all of this?

The pain dragged her into unconsciousness. The darkness embraced her like a heavy cloak. The last thing she saw was the pendant gleaming in her hand, like a broken promise, like a key she would never be able to use.

And in the silence, the mystery was sown.

Chapter 2 Six Months Earlier

The warm afternoon light filtered through the apartment windows, bathing the living room in an almost unreal calm. Ana and Sebastián sat across from each other at the dining table, like two perfectly aligned puzzle pieces. Their conversation flowed, yet it felt empty-like they had learned to navigate these waters without ever truly touching.

-How was your day? -Sebastián asked, glancing up from his phone for a brief moment, only to sink back into the screen.

Ana gave a weak smile, staring at the untouched plate of pasta in front of her. She wasn't hungry, but she didn't know how to express what she truly felt. Something in her chest tightened every time their conversations took on this monotonous tone, as if they were living in parallel worlds that rarely crossed.

-Fine. Just a normal day. -she replied, searching for something to say but feeling like her words were mere echoes.

The apartment was beautiful, without a doubt-modern furniture, neutral colors, and a minimalist style that exuded perfection. But that perfection couldn't hide what lay beneath. Ana could feel how the routine of their days was closing in on her, pressing the walls of her life tighter and tighter.

From time to time, her gaze met Sebastián's, and in those fleeting moments, she felt as if he was there-yet at the same time, so far away. His face, handsome but impassive, always so calm, so calculated. What had happened to the man who once looked at her with passion? Ana couldn't remember. Or rather, she didn't want to.

The discomfort became more palpable as time passed. They no longer knew how to fill the silences. The laughter had faded, and the "I love you's" no longer felt genuine, merely part of a routine they were expected to follow.

-You know, I was thinking about vacation. -Sebastián changed the subject, but Ana noticed the slightly distant tone in his voice. As if he was talking about something that didn't really matter to him.

-Vacation? -Ana lifted her gaze, surprised by the sudden mention of the topic. Vacation? Really?

-Yeah. Somewhere quiet. Maybe an island or something like that. I mean, we've been working a lot. -Sebastián didn't lift his eyes from his phone, as if the suggestion had nothing to do with him, just an obligation to be met.

Ana thought for a moment, then nodded without saying anything. "Vacation." It all sounded so distant, so foreign. At first, she considered that it might be an opportunity to regain what they had lost, to reconnect-but deep down, she knew any attempt would be futile. Something deeper, something irreparable, had already begun to fracture their relationship.

-Ana, are you listening? -Sebastián finally looked up, a hint of concern in his voice.

-Yeah, of course. -Ana stared at him, feeling a sting of frustration. Why didn't he see what she saw? Why didn't he notice the cracks, the whispers slipping between them?

-You don't seem too excited about the idea... -Sebastián observed her carefully.

Ana hesitated, then let out a small, joyless laugh. "I don't even know if we could share a place like that. Right now, we'd be just as far apart as we are now."

Silence filled the room, trapping them in a bubble that grew more suffocating by the second.

That night, Ana and Sebastián were invited to a family dinner. His parents' house was filled with people, laughter, and conversation, but Ana felt like a ghost, drifting through the lively atmosphere. The conversations revolved around trivial topics while Ana remained quiet, observing from her corner.

At some point, Sebastián's aunt-a robust woman with a contagious laugh-began talking about the past.

-Did you know that Sebastián and Gabriel were inseparable when they were younger? -she said, pouring red wine into their glasses, unaware of the immediate shift in Sebastián's expression.

Ana noticed it instantly. Sebastián froze for a second, and his eyes, which had previously shone with indifference, darkened slightly. The mention of Gabriel's name triggered a subtle, almost imperceptible reaction in him. As if a shadow had passed over his face, his lips pressing into a firm line.

Gabriel? The name lingered in the air like an echo. Ana repeated it in her mind, but she couldn't fully grasp Sebastián's reaction. Who was Gabriel to him?

-Yes, Gabriel. Always together... like brothers. They spent all their time at my house, remember, Sebastián? -the aunt continued, while the others at the table smiled fondly.

Ana watched Sebastián closely. Something in his posture shifted. He straightened slightly, but his gaze never met hers. Was it just her imagination, or did Sebastián seem uncomfortable? As if he wanted to distance himself from that part of his past.

-Yeah, of course. -Sebastián murmured, taking a sip of his wine and looking away, as if trying to avoid delving deeper into the subject.

Ana felt a pang in her chest. Gabriel. That name kept echoing in her mind, and for a second, she couldn't help but wonder if there was something more between Sebastián and this Gabriel. Something she hadn't been told.

The conversation carried on, but for Ana, the air in the room grew heavy. She felt as if something important was slipping through her fingers-something she couldn't fully understand yet. Why did Gabriel's name cause such unease in Sebastián? The more she repeated it in her mind, the stronger her unease grew. Something was hidden, something neither she nor Sebastián wanted to unearth.

The night ended without further incident, but Ana couldn't stop thinking about that moment-about the shadow that had crossed Sebastián's face. Something was wrong, and she knew it. But what?

Chapter 3 The Unexpected Visit

Sebastián's parents' house, once a place of laughter and joy, was now filled with meaningless conversations, forced laughter, and furtive glances. The party, which had initially promised to be an opportunity to relax, had turned into a series of awkward interactions. The warm lights in the living room gently illuminated the faces of the guests, but the atmosphere was dense, as if something important was about to be revealed.

Ana stood at the back of the room, observing the scene. Her wine glass was only half full, and her nervous fingers twirled it between her hands. Sebastián had spent most of the night talking with his brother, Tomás, and some of the people gathering around the buffet table. However, Ana couldn't shake off the feeling of being disconnected from everything around her. Something within her had changed in the past few weeks. The mention of Gabriel, Sebastián's growing distance, the cold routine of their marriage... everything had led her into deep reflection.

Suddenly, the front door opened with a sound that cut through the background music, and in that instant, Ana felt a small shiver run down her spine. It was a subtle presence, but a penetrating one. Sebastián quickly lifted his head, his face flushing for a brief moment, though his expression remained serious, controlled. Ana watched, both fascinated and unsettled.

A tall figure, with dark, slightly tousled hair, entered the room. His presence was imposing, almost as if the air itself had recognized him. Gabriel. He was not a stranger to Ana, not at all. The last time she had seen him, time seemed to have frozen between them. Though they had exchanged no words, something in their gazes had spoken far more than any conversation could have expressed.

Gabriel moved slowly toward the center of the room, greeting some family members with a timid smile, but his eyes lingered on Sebastián for a moment before shifting toward Ana. Their eyes met briefly, and in that instant, the world around them seemed to fade away. Words were unnecessary, as if everything that had happened before this moment had left an indelible mark between them-something that neither time nor circumstance could erase.

"Gabriel?" Sebastián's voice was tenser than Ana expected. It was a mixture of surprise and something deeper, something hidden beneath his calm tone. "I didn't know you were coming..."

Gabriel smiled enigmatically, a gesture that conveyed as much mystery as familiarity. It wasn't a welcoming smile, but rather a knowing one, as if they were both aware of something the others ignored.

"I had a change of plans. I thought this would be a good occasion to... catch up," Gabriel said, his gaze scanning the faces of the guests, but always returning to Sebastián-and then to Ana.

The guests, who had mostly been scattered around the room, began to notice the strange energy that had emerged with Gabriel's arrival. A palpable tension filled the air, thickening it. Murmurs began to spread, and some smiles became stiff.

Ana, both curious and uneasy, tried not to show her discomfort. She remained near the table, feigning interest in a trivial conversation about the weather with one of Sebastián's aunts. However, her eyes couldn't help but follow Gabriel's movements. It wasn't just his presence that unsettled her; it was the way he carried himself, the way he looked at Sebastián, that she couldn't stop analyzing. What had happened between them?

Before long, Gabriel approached Ana, leaving the others behind. His gaze was direct, almost disarming. His eyes, as intense as she remembered, looked at her with a mix of recognition and something deeper-something Ana couldn't fully decipher.

"It's been a long time, hasn't it?" Gabriel said, his voice deep but soft, as if he was waiting for Ana to remember him completely.

Ana, feeling a slight chill, nodded slowly.

"Yes... a long time," she murmured, unable to articulate more. Her mind was filled with unanswered questions, and Gabriel's closeness only made everything more confusing.

But before she could process her thoughts, an unexpected comment from Sebastián's aunt cut through the tense air. She approached Gabriel with a somewhat mischievous smile, as if she knew him very well.

"Oh, Gabriel, you've always been like family, haven't you? You and Sebastián got along so well. I can't believe how much time has passed since those days when you two... well, you knew everything about Sebastián-not just as a friend..." The aunt spoke without much thought, unaware of the immediate shift in the room's energy.

A brief silence settled in the room. All eyes turned to Gabriel and Sebastián, who exchanged a significant look. Sebastián, who had maintained his composure until that moment, pressed his lips together, his expression hardening.

Gabriel smiled with a hint of cynicism but said nothing in response. He merely raised the wine glass in his hands and lifted it slightly in Sebastián's direction.

"Those were different times," Gabriel said, hinting that there was much more behind that statement than met the eye.

Ana watched the interaction, her mind racing with questions. What did those words mean? What kind of friendship-or something more-had Gabriel shared with Sebastián? And why was there such a loaded gaze between them?

The guests continued their conversations, but the atmosphere had changed irreversibly. The tension was thick in the air, and Ana couldn't help but feel trapped in a web of secrets she wasn't even sure she wanted to untangle.

However, one thing was clear: Gabriel was not just a friend from the past. And Sebastián, despite his efforts to maintain a facade of normalcy, could not hide what he truly felt.

The night went on, but for Ana, the weight of the unspoken, the hidden, the unrevealed, surrounded her like a shadow she couldn't shake off
