BECAUSE YOU'RE GOOD
-Harper's POV-
My eyes shot open, and I jerked straight up. Fear gripped me as memories of last night slowly trickled back into my mind. I screamed as it felt like my soul was leaving my body. It was so long and hard with a force that made my lungs burn. I didn't care to control the tears streaming down my face as my wailing continued to fill the dark space around me. Images flashed through my mind. My mother, my father, both gone. My cries pleading for mercy fell on deaf ears and hardened hearts. The sad eyes of my parents staring at me seared into my mind. The hollow feeling where my heart once beat was a constant reminder of how alone I am. There are no words to describe the man responsible for my heartache. He took my life from me in the most gruesome and sadistic way imaginable. A cold chill rolled over my bare chest and arms causing goosebumps to rise all over my body. I lifted my hands to wipe my eyes. The light of the moon was shining through a window too small for me to fit through. I'm in what looked like a prison cell. The shine of the moon light reflected off the thick metal bars to my left. The walls were gray, built from concrete or blocks. Cracks lined the walls, spreading in all different directions. A dank smell that reminded me of mildew made the air thick and stuffy. All I could hear was water dripping, causing a constant echo over and over. Where am I? The pain of the brutal happenings from last night reminded me of why I was here. I lifted my legs to sit up from my position. I slid my feet off what looked like a cot style bed, hard with no covers. Cold and heavy clinking sounded throughout the room, a harsh realization that I had shackles on my ankles. I felt a burn on my bottom lip. I licked it realizing it had a cut. Most likely that was from Alpha Thane striking my face when I refused to be his mate. Looking at my hands they were dirty. My clothes were torn to the point of almost falling off my body.
I cried for what seemed like hours on end. Now my emotions were numb, I was unable to feel anything. A loud squeaking sound as if a metal door was opening caught my attention. It was the first sign I had had of not being completely alone here. I lifted my head to look toward the footsteps headed my way. A lady who looked to be a servant smiled gently at me and slid a tray of food through an opening I could only assume was used for that purpose. She turned to walk away.
"WAIT!" I yelled. The lady stopped walking and turned to look at me. "What is going to happen to me?" The lady had sadness in her eyes.
"Alpha will see you shortly" then she turned and continued toward the exit. The metal door squeaked once more and latched closed. I thought about eating but my appetite wasn't there. How could I eat right now? Maybe I can starve myself. Death is a welcome thought for me, as I can't imagine my life being happy ever again. Hours passed by.
I am assuming it was the next morning as the sun peeked through the window. I was awake staring at the ceiling when I heard muffled talking. I recognized the squeak from the metal door. Realizing someone was coming my way caused me to shiver. I knew this was a man, his steps were much louder than the lady who was in here last. It must be him. Deciding I was not going to cower to this monster I stood up straight and prepared to meet my capture head on. Anger rose in my chest as his voice got louder. Finally appearing before me was three men. Two guards, and him. The first thing I always see when I am staring at the devil himself is his eyes. They were menacing deep and dark red eyes. Pure evil radiated from this man. He was tall, around 6'1. Light brown hair that was not long and not too short. It was styled messy on top. Over his right eye a scar was slid diagonal over his face. His body was built like an Alpha should be. Strong and chiseled with arms that threatened to tear his tight fitted tee shirt that was tucked into his blue jean pants. If he were anyone else, I would find him attractive. He stood tall with ruthless authority. This man ruled with fear. I wasn't going to give him the pleasure of seeing me scared of him. I didn't take my eyes off him, if looks could kill he would be dead right now. I straightened my shoulders and stood as tall as I could.
"Harper, you look beautiful as ever. The look of captivity suits you."
His voice is low and seductive. He made me sick.
"What do you want with me, Alpha Thane?"
I spat the words out. His menacing smile curled over his white teeth. It is a terrible thing, how such a handsome man can be the devil reincarnated.
"It is no secret; I want you as my mate."
"WHY ME... WHY DID YOU PICK ME?" I raised my voice and yelled at him
Tears swelled in my eyes, but I refused to let them fall in front of him. "Why couldn't you pick someone as cruel as you?" Alpha Thane stepped to the side instructing one of the guards to unlock my cell door. More clinking sounds echoed off the walls as the cell door slid open. Alpha Thane walked in, stopping in front of me. I could feel his breath on my forehead. My body wanted to move away from him, but I forced myself to stand as tall and as confident as I possibly could. He was much taller than me. I was only 5'3 in height. I looked up at him. Our eyes locked. A low growl rumbled deep in his chest as he brought his mouth closer to my ear. His breath hot on my neck, caused my body to shiver. With a soft seductive voice, he answered my question
"I want you because you're good." I took advantage of his proximity to me and slapped him across the face. It didn't faze him. With a look of pure excitement his eyes fell dark and a nasty smirk curled over his teeth. "You're going to be fun." He rolled his fingers softly over my abdomen as he turned to exit the cell. He turned and looked at me once more. "Your 18th birthday is only a few moons away. I will make you my mate that night, and I look forward to claiming all of you." He turned to the guards, "take her to her room and lock her in. make sure she is able to shower and eat well."
A couple of weeks passed. I was in an actual bedroom now with a conjoined bathroom. I decided I was going to either escape or die trying. The last words my father said to me rang loud in my mind 'never forget who you are. You are strong and a fighter. You will live through this. Remember that your mother and I love you so much...' If I didn't make It out for me, I would make it out for them. I decided it was best if I kept my head down and didn't argue or fight. All those things go against my mind and body. Pride and stubbornness being the main driving force in my personality. I pretended to accept Alpha Thane and his plan for me. I had to force myself to act mean to the servants and guards. Purposefully yelling and breaking things then immediately making them clean it all up. I treated them like I was better than them. It was hard for me to do this because I was the exact opposite of all of this. When I got the chance, I apologized to the servants. They didn't deserve any of it and I got close with a few of them. I eventually trusted them enough to tell them my plan. I was waiting for Alpha Thane to trust me that way I had more freedom to roam around the packhouse. Then I would wait for the right time and run. My plan was not something I wanted to do, but it was something I had to do. I was out of other options. I couldn't fight my way out and my birthday was only a few days away. It fell on the day of the solar eclipse which I didn't want to think about right now. If I didn't escape soon, I was going to kill myself because I am not letting that monster make me his mate.
A few more days passed, and I was finally able to roam about the large packhouse freely. Guards would bow their heads at me as I passed by them as if I was their Luna. The servants knew that I wasn't mean, so they were ok with going along with my act. Let's just say they got a kick out of the few times I wacked a guard with a vase pretending to be angry. Tonight, Alpha Thane had planned to take some of his troops and raid a village. It was now or never. I didn't have much left of home, so I was able to pack it all. The sun started going down. I watched as Alpha Thane and his warriors lined up outside preparing to leave. Alpha Thane walked over. He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me close to him.
"Seven more days Harper, then I will be able to claim you as mine." He licked his lips and kissed me long and hard. Unable to wait for the kiss to be over I separated from him and forced myself to smile. He turned and walked toward his warriors, and I watched as they climbed into their vehicles and disappeared into the night. It was time to go.
I hugged all the servants who came to my room to see me off. I hate so much to leave them here. If I am ever given the chance, I will come back for them. They were each situated outside my room in different areas to keep watch. I slid from my bedroom window onto the roof of the pack house and shimmied down a drainpipe with little effort at all. By the light of the full moon, I kept to the shadows moving quietly but quickly. My direction was unknown. The only thing I could do was get far away from here. I turned back briefly to mourn the loss of my childhood home before continuing into the dense forest. I ran as fast as I could. I only stopped to rest briefly before moving again. I walked when I couldn't run. I realized I had forgotten to pack food and water, so I stopped near a stream to have a drink but kept moving. It was the night of the third day when fatigue finally overcame me. I laid down to rest for only a moment. I couldn't fight sleep any longer.
***The next morning***
The sound of footsteps dissolving down the hallway outside my room invaded my train of thought as I stepped out of the shower. I tried to hurry and dry myself, wrapping my hair in a towel before I could soil the floor even more with water. The smell of my perfume scented shampoo filled the room along with steam that clouded the mirror. Taking a dry cloth, I slid it over the mirror to wipe it clear. I quickly brushed my teeth and applied a minimum amount of makeup. I looked at myself in the mirror, breathing out a sigh. I am so nervous today. I am hoping to be sworn in as an official member of the Harmony Moon Pack after I stumbled onto the edge of their territory by accident late last night. I consider myself blessed by the Moon Goddess for letting me find this pack. After my ordeal with my last pack... The Foul Moon Pack, I thought I would be forever a rogue on the run. I have fifteen minutes to be dressed and standing in front of the Alpha of this pack. I hurried and scrambled to dry my long black wavy hair.
I picked out some simple clothes that were provided to me by a kind Omega named Kelly. She was around my age with brown shoulder length hair. He was short, maybe 5'2. She had a slim frame that would make you think she was younger than she is. I could tell she has a bubbly personality that was infectious to those around her. If I get to stay here, maybe we can become friends. I slipped on the black fitted tee shirt and jean shorts, I made my way to the front door and put on my running shoes. I plan to get a job soon. I need money so I can provide for myself. I am seventeen years old with my eighteenth birthday being only a few days away. I didn't want to think about that right now though. The thought of my parents not being there was too hard to accept.
Feeling my heart squeeze in my chest, I took a deep breath and made my way out into the hallway. I turned left out of my room and found myself in a long hallway with tan walls and white crown molding. The floor looked like shiny white marble tile. This is just a hallway, and it is still so much more elegant than anyplace I have ever been. I passed by a nice lady and man who looked deep in conversation. When they noticed me, they paused their conversation to greet me with a warm smile and wave. I shyly smiled and nodded at them on my way there. I heard her footsteps before I saw her.
"Good, looks like you are ready for your meeting with Alpha Titus." I turned to see Kelly half running half walking toward me. She had a huge smile on her face, as if she was so excited for me. Her mood and excitement caught me off guard. This girl doesn't know me, but she is so trusting and excited to welcome me into her pack with open arms. I didn't have to walk far before I met her in the hallway.
"Thank you for meeting me. I have no idea where I am going." I got here during the night. With my tired and groggy state, there is no way I could remember all the twists and turns we took to get me to the room that was assigned to me by the head Omega housekeeper. Kelly said she was responsible for assigning living quarters and handling packhouse gatherings... among other things. I have yet to meet her.
"That is no problem, I wanted to check on you this morning. You looked so tired when you arrived last night." Kelly said with a warm frown that met her hickory-colored eyes. She seemed to have a way of comforting me. I was never good with new things. Here I am on my own, in a new place with no one that I know. I don't even have my wolf yet to keep me company, not until my eighteenth birthday.
I am completely uncomfortable, but Kelly has helped make things a little easier. I thanked her and she gave me a friendly smile and turned to walk back down the hallway toward a flight of stairs. I walked next to her with a nervous feeling in my stomach. What if the alpha doesn't like me? What if he denies my entry into the pack? I tried to shove those thoughts to the back of my head as we landed on the last step of the stairway. Looking up I found myself in a large dining hall, with lots of round tables with white tablecloths over top of them. Chairs were situated all around the tables where many pack members were enjoying their breakfast and conversations with their families and friends. Beautiful White drapes hung over the tops of long windows that ranged from the tall ceiling to the shiny marble floors. It would all remind you of a castle. I haven't seen this pack house in its entirety, maybe it is a castle. The food smelled so good. I knew by the smell that the bar included bacon, sausage, and fresh rolls. All that reminded me of just how hungry I am. I haven't eaten in a couple of days. I forgot to pack food of all things when I decided to run. Omega waitresses were walking about catering to everyone with kindness and hospitality. How nice it must be living here. Kelly turned to me with a knowing stare and guided me down another hallway to the right.
"I know you must be hungry. I thought I heard you say you had been on the run for two to three days. Once we meet with the alpha, you will be able to eat until you puke if you want." I looked at her big bright smile. She was trying to lighten my mood. I giggled at her. How can she be so nice to a stranger? We came to the first door on the right once we entered the hallway. Kelly stopped and turned to me before she knocked. I was biting my lip, lost in my nervous thoughts.
"This is it." Said Kelly.
"Oh! already?" There goes my heart rate. I couldn't control my nervousness no matter how hard I tried. I wasn't scared, but there was just something about meeting a new alpha. My life was literally in his hands at this moment. "What if he doesn't accept me?" I whispered to Kelly.
"Oh! shush... you have nothing to worry about. If you are a good person alpha will sense that. The only ones he ever rejects are the ones with ill intent. I can tell you are a good person. Try not to worry and tell him your story." Kelly didn't know all of what I had been through the last few days. All I told her is that I was running from someone vile and awful. I gave Kelly a nod signaling her to go ahead and knock on the door.
Before the door opened all the way I paused to catch my breath and gather my nerves. Walking into the large office, I willed myself to look as calm and confident as possible. The first thing I noticed was the smell... cedar and pine? It was a natural smell that pulled my attention toward the source of this seductive scent. Instantly I was confused and afraid to look up, so I paused to gather my senses once more before continuing further into the room. Not wanting to look even more like a mad she wolf, I finally stilled myself enough to raise my head to greet the authority figure in front of me. Right away I knew that alpha Titus was not alone, he wasn't the first person that I saw once I looked up. My eyes landed on a man with black hair cut short on the sides but slightly longer on the top. It was tossed in a sexy kind of way. Even messy his hair had a way of giving off a vibe of unkept confidence that screamed sex appeal. I got lost in his silver eyes, dangerously possessive. I didn't know whether to turn and run or submit and stay. His tan skin and chiseled physique were evident through his white button up dress shirt and black pants to match. He had a sharp jawline that complemented his perfect white smile that instantly lit me on fire. Ugh... What am I doing? How long have I been staring?
I swallowed the drool that had gathered in my mouth while I was caught checking out the stranger in front of me. I scolded myself mentally. I have never...ever been so affected by a man wolf in all my life. I have had crushes but.... a light laugh snapped me back to my senses when I realized once again, I have totally dropped the ball in front of this alpha. I briefly allowed myself one more glance in the direction of the mouthwatering stranger in front of me. He returned my gaze with a naughty but amused smile. I managed to bring my attention to the other man in the room. He was sitting at a desk with his elbows propped and his hands standing in an interlaced position near his chin. His eyes were also gray but a darker shade that was more like coal. I could tell his hair was naturally black, but it had grayed with time. He kept it combed in a neat style to the side of his face. He was a large man. Despite his sitting position I could tell he was nearly the same height of the man next to him. He was at least 6'2. He had a warrior build, no doubt he has seen many battles. He must be the father of Mr. Sexy standing over to his left.
I managed to take the final steps to position myself in front of his desk. The smell of cedar and pine was growing stronger because I was so much closer to the source. I looked at Alpha Titus and finally gave him a warm smile and extended my hand. He returned my smile and shook my hand and invited me to take a seat. His welcoming demeanor instantly relaxed my nerves, but I never once forgot about what was standing next to me. Widening my smile, I accepted his offer to take a seat. I knew this would be a long and hard conversation we were about to have.
"Thank you for meeting with me, Alpha Titus. I am ever so grateful for your hospitality and willingness to offer me a room for the night." He nodded the smile never leaving his face.
"It is my pleasure. I make it a priority to never turn away a wolf in need. My pack has been blessed by the Moon Goddess. It is the least I can do to thank her for all she has done for us here at Harmony Moon Pack." Gesturing to his left he finally revealed the name of the man who was responsible for stopping my heart a moment ago. "This is my son and next in line to take my place as alpha of our beloved pack, Gabriel." I turned to look at Gabriel. My increased heart rate instantly betrayed my plan to stay calm and confident. I smiled.
"It is nice to meet you, Gabriel. I am sure you will make a fine alpha when the time comes." Not letting the smile leave my face and attempting to keep my tongue from falling out of my mouth, I waited on his response. He gave me a devilishly cocky yet seductive smile that caused me to melt.
"Thank you, Miss..." Oh! I forgot to tell them my name!
"Harper.... Um...Harper Rae." He bit his bottom lip in a way that made my brain fuzz out for a minute.
"Thank you, Harper, it is an honor to have you. Hopefully it is still a while now before I have to take my father's place. When that time comes, I am ready." Giving him a smile and a nod, I turned my attention back to alpha Titus who was looking at him with a strange look on his face.
"Not before I meet my future daughter-in-law and the next Luna of this pack. A strong alpha must have a strong and capable Luna to support him. The Luna is the heart of this pack. She will play an important role in all of our lives." Glancing toward Gabriel, he was now looking down with a hand seeming to rub the back of his neck in a nervus motion. With his head still tilted down and red tone now warmed his cheeks he raised his eyebrows to talk to his father.
"Now is not the time father. We can continue this conversation later." He stone faced gave his father a look that silently said, "shut it!" This is not a conversation that I want to be caught in the middle of. Gabriel must have a mate...or a girlfriend that he has yet to introduce to his father. Knowing this caused me to frown a little. I tried to wipe my face clean of any emotion other than kindness and gratitude. I would like to finish this conversation and finally find out what my future with this pack is.
"Let's continue, my apologies, Harper. I don't want to trouble you with my fatherly responsibilities. Will you explain in detail why you were found on the edge of my territory?" There it was... the dreaded question. I only plan to go into detail with my story once, and this is it. I will never tell anyone else the full extent of the hell that I have been through.
"It is a long story; do you have time?" Alpha Titus gave me a caring smile and nodded to me.
"Of course, my dear. Knowing your whole story will be beneficial in knowing the extent of the help that you need." He turned to stare at Gabriel "Gabe, if you want to stay, I suggest you find yourself a seat." Gabriel shuffled from one foot to the other. He stepped closer to me, taking the seat to my right causing my senses to go into overdrive. Determined to not lose my train of thought again I cleared my throat and began....
THE HELL I LIVED
~Harper's POV~
"You already know my name is Harper Rae. I was born a member of the Foul Moon Pack. They are a growing mass of the most vile and dishonorable horde of wolves. It is not a rumor; they are recognized to be hate-filled and ruthless. They are nasty and take what they want. It is not beneath them to kill, steal, burn, and destroy anything and everything for their own nasty barbaric pleasure. Alpha Thane Kago took his father's place as the leader of Foul Moon Pack nearly six months ago, and it has been my living hell ever since. I was among the only decent members left in Thane's pack when Thane took over. Women were raped and taken as slaves. Children were sold, most likely forced into hard labor. Husbands were murdered unless they submitted to Thane's evil cause. Even still, they had to give up their mates and prove that they were willing to do unthinkable things to innocent packs and families. The Foul Moon Pack is already a large pack. It took a while, but he combed through members picking out the "liabilities" who he decided would weaken his despicable army. If members of his pack show any kindness or pleasant traits, they would immediately be slaughtered. No member was able to leave on their own terms. My parents were strong and honorable warriors. They refused to burn down villages and the killing of innocent wolves. My parents' beliefs and kind ways are what ultimately lead alpha Thane right to our doorstep. When Alpha Thane made his way to my childhood home, his sick mind decided that he would take me against my will to be his mate."
I paused to take a breath and even my breathing. I could have sworn I heard Gabriel growl. Maybe I am hearing things. I continued with my story.
"I pushed back against Thane's demands, but to my horror he attempted to humble me using fear. Thane decapitated my mother and father in front of me. I heard every cry; I saw every tear. I begged Thane to stop. I cried to the Moon Goddess as my father fought to get to my mother. Thane made my father watch as they tortured my mother. First cutting her hair, then breaking out her teeth. She tried to hold her screams back... I know because of me. My mother didn't want me to see what was happening. I told Thane I would do whatever he wanted. I know his plan was to kill them the entire time. He was just playing with me. Once he finally beheaded my mother, he moved to my father. He first told him about all his sinful plans that he had for me. Including using me for his own sick pleasure. Even though he planned to make me his mate, he didn't plan on having a Luna. That didn't matter to me though, I would die before I agreed to submit to this monster. Thane then grabbed a knife and slowly cut into my father's flesh. It was as if all his screams were my own. My heart was dying right along with him. Thane took pleasure in the torture. He skinned my father with slow knife strokes just to prolong the pain. When he was done my father was nothing but read flesh and muscle, but he was still alive and awake. Blood was pooled at his knees where he was knelt on all fours still holding himself up. Pain had overtaken his once strong and loving features. My father breathlessly said to me 'never forget who you are. You are strong and a fighter. You will live through this. Remember that your mother and I love you so much...' Before my father could finish what he was trying to say, Thane looked at me with a wicked grin then turned back to my father and slit his throat right in front of me. His body still trying to take breaths filled the room with sounds of gurgling from the blood filling his lungs. The look on my father's face at that moment is forever branded into my mind. I watched until my father's body went limp. The smell of blood was overpowering. Little did Thane know; I am and have always been too headstrong to lay down to such a sick monster. I pretended to submit, even though pretending was still nauseating. I knew it was my only chance to escape my prison. Thane was planning to mark me on my eighteenth birthday. I planned and packed a small pack with essentials. I negligently forgot food of all things. I knew Thane was starting to trust me. I forced myself to allow him to grope and kiss on me to make my act seem more convincing. Because of this, I never had an appetite to eat. Knowing I needed my strength I had to force feed myself the whole time I was his prisoner. He never went further with his dirty acts. He always told me he had big plans for me on my eighteenth birthday. I had to remind myself that I had to do everything to get away. I was planning to kill myself if I was caught, so I needed to try my hardest to be successful during my escape. Revenge for my parents drove my desire to reach freedom. I plan to kill Thane if I am ever given the chance. For weeks I was mean to servants, pretending to be just as evil as Alpha Thane wanted me to be. I would yell at them, and break things then demand they clean it up. When I was alone, I always apologized to the servants, and they soon figured out my plan. They supported my escape. About three nights ago, a few servants stood watch for me as I slipped from my bedroom window. I never skipped on training, so navigating the shadows quietly was second nature for me. My only light that night was the full moon. I wanted to believe that the Moon Goddess was lighting my way to freedom. I ran as fast as I could into the woods. Before I lost sight of my childhood home, I turned to bid farewell. Taking with me pleasant memories of my parents that were threatened become overshadowed by my agonizing last memories of them. Refusing to cry or take too much time I started running. Once I couldn't run anymore, I walked, and I walked unsure of where I was going. My only direction was away from Alpha Thane. I would stop to rest only a moment before continuing in the direction I was going. I knew that if I slowed down Thane would find me. I knew if I was caught, that I would be living in a nightmare. I realized all too late that I forgot to bring food. My body was growing weaker by the hour. I thought I was never going to make it to freedom. At that point I was welcoming death, I was numb from the heartache of losing my parents the tragic way that I did, and the thought of knowing I was now alone in this world with no one left that cares about me. It is such a lonesome feeling... I don't know how far I traveled, or when I fell asleep. I just know I woke up to your guards asking me questions. They were strong but polite, even though I was a stranger. It was in the middle of the night, but your people were so kind to me. Once they realized I wasn't a threat, they offered me a warm bath and a comfortable bed for the night. That is when I met Kelly, one of your Omegas. She gave me some clean clothes and made me feel welcome right away. I could have told you more about the torture and vial things that I went through, and the things that were done to my family. If it is okay with you, I would like to end my story here."
I took a deep breath, reaching my hand up to wipe the tears that I didn't realize had been streaming down my face. I knew I looked a mess. I took a moment to calm myself and try to stop the pain that was growing stronger in the center of my chest. The pain of losing my parents was heavier now than it has been the last few hours. The cause, no doubt due to me reliving my story. I wanted to erase those memories. I know that until I see Thane Kago die, I could never fully heal. I wanted to help the servants and what innocents that are left in that place. At this moment, my confidence in that ever happening wasn't there.
"Your story is very tragic young lady. I am sorry to hear of all the horrible thing that you have been through in the last few months." I nodded as an intended thank you. Not wanting sympathy or pity. I looked over to Gabriel, for a moment all the pain and sorrow I was feeling faded away. He was sitting in his chair with his elbows resting on his knees. His hands were interlaced, and he was resting his forehead on his knuckles, with his face angled to the floor. I could see that his eyes were shut, and it looked like his jaw was clenched. It looked like he was trying to calm himself. Could he really be that affected by what happened to me? Surely, he has other things to be worried about. We only just met. Maybe he is asleep... I turned to look back toward Alpha Titus.
"Please, don't pity me. I went through hell, but I am alive. I lost my parents, but I made it out. I know my parents are watching over me. No matter how alone I feel, I will keep moving forward for them. I am a strong woman. All I need is a pack. I will get a job and support myself if given the chance." Alpha Titus watched me intently, taking in everything that I was saying. Gabriel finally opened his eyes...
"Did you say you don't have your wolf yet?" I looked toward him.
"That is right, I have not gotten my wolf yet." Gabriel nodded as he wore a stone face free of any emotion or feelings.
"When is your eighteenth birthday?" This question confused me, but I answered.
"Four days from now. The day of the solar eclipse and the summer solstice." Gabriel turned his head to look at his father.
"I have heard about The Foul Moon Pack. They have not always been such a thorn in my side. They have always been a hateful pack with a handful of loyal and good wolves. I have been getting reports just how bad things have gotten with that pack. A few alphas have approached me to ask for our assistance and protection from fear of being overtaken by the Foul Moon Pack." I wasn't surprised, the things that Thane was doing couldn't be hidden for long. Not that he was trying to hide anything. "What was your rank in your old pack?" It took me a minute to understand Alpha Titus's question.
"Oh...um...I was considered a warrior in training." Gabriel turned to look at me as if surprised by what I said.
"You trained? How often? How long have you been in training?" excited by the direction of the conversation I let myself feel pride in that moment.
"I have trained since I was old enough to try. When I was four years old, I would watch my mother and father with their forms and motion. I would try to mirror their movements. My parents thought it was cute, so they started including me in their routines. Before times got bad within the pack my father was hailed as one of the strongest warriors in the pack. He could calculate his opponents' movements like he was reading their mind and predicting their next move. He hardly ever lost a fight, and he didn't hold back on the battlefields. I never looked at training as a job or a chore. I fell into a routine and stuck with it. I constantly pushed my body to the limit, conditioning myself to have better cardio and skills. I found training to be the one thing that I could indulge in, and it made me feel like I was doing something worthwhile. I was gaining skill sets that I could use in my future of being a warrior for my pack. It wasn't long before I was recognized as one of the strongest warriors in training. Age and height did not hold me back. I am only 5'3 with a toned build. This was never a disadvantage to me. I was usually faster than my opponents. Every failure or lost fight wasn't devastating to me. I would take my loss like a lady, learning from my mistakes and getting better and better at what I did. Before I was made an official warrior, our alpha died, and all hell broke loose."
As pleasant memories faded back into reality, I realized that Alpha Titus and Alpha Gabriel were staring at me with a bewildered expression on their faces. I was trying to understand what they were thinking when Alpha Gabriel spoke...
"Wow, I look forward to seeing you in training." Red hot heat flooded my cheeks, and I bit my lip. Biting my lip has always been a nervous habit of mine. I do it without realizing. "What are your greatest strengths?" Gabriel asked.
"Well, I try to keep myself well diverse in my specialties, but I took after my father. It is easy for me to predict my opponent's next move and implement counter attacks on the spot. I am not as good as my father.... was, but I know I can be with enough training and hard work."
Gabriel was looking at me with his eyebrows raised and his bottom lip trapped between his teeth. It was clear that he was thinking about something. I wonder what.... Alpha Titus drug me from my mind before I could let my thoughts linger on Gabriel's bottom lip any longer.
"Well, it is settled then. As the Alpha of the Harmony Moon Pack, I am proud to accept you with open arms. I sense no ill intent from you, and I know that you will be a great gain for our pack. Our warrior she wolves could use some of your help on the field. If what you are telling us is true. Your skillset will prove to be beneficial to our training sessions. What do you think Gabriel?" Caught off guard Alpha Gabriel's gaze snapped to his father then back to me. His eyes darkened and he looked straight at me, once again giving me that seductive yet mischievous smile. Nervous chills covered my entire body.
"I am sure that Harper will be a kick ass fighter. I am looking forward to watching her on the field." The mere thought of Alpha Gabriel watching me during training had my stomach doing flips...yikes! I was trying to hold back the heat rising back into my cheeks while Gabriel and I held eye contact for a moment, I was happily lost in his seemingly possessive gaze until Alpha Titus coughed to get our attention.
I quickly jerked my head back in the direction of Alpha Titus, feeling embarrassment flooding my thoughts. Rising from his chair Alpha Titus walked around his desk. He was towering over me; he placed his hand on my shoulder.
"As Alpha this pack, I am proud to exercise my authority provided to me by our beloved Moon Goddess, to accept you Harper Rae as a proud member of The Harmony Moon Pack." I felt a shiver roll through my body as the link was opened to me. Alpha Titus then opened his mind link up to the entire pack "everyone, I am letting you know that I have accepted a new she wolf into our pack. Her name is Harper Rae. Please welcome her and show her kindness as she adjusts to her new home here with us." My mind link was flooded with members welcoming me. I heard old voices, and voices that sounded to be from pack members my age. I even heard nice words from children which took me by surprise. Alpha Titus moved closer to me with his arms held out. I gladly accepted his hug and returned it.
"My dear, you are going to be just fine. You will settle into our pack, and it will feel like you have grown up here. If you are happy with the living quarters that you had last night, you are welcome to keep that room. If you are unhappy, just let Kelly know. I know she will do anything to make sure that you feel comfortable here. A job will be provided to you if you would like, but I want you to know that you don't have to work. All your needs will be met, and once you become an official warrior after your skillset is confirmed, you will begin to receive a generous wage anyway. It is your choice. Gabriel will walk you back out to the dining hall. I am sure your stomach is chewing on your backbone by now, so I will leave you to it. When you are ready, Gabriel is also over everything to do with training so he is who you would go to for all your questions. He can provide you a training schedule, and you can begin training when you feel ready. Please, take your time and make yourself at home."
Alpha Titus gave me a smile that reminded me of the way that my father smiled at me. I fought the tears threatening to flood my eyes.
"Thank you, Alpha Titus and Alpha Gabriel, for everything. I will work to become a productive member of this pack and do my part with loyalty and pride."
GREEN EYES DRAWING ME IN
~ Gabriel's POV~
It was as if my heart stopped the moment the scent hit me. Perfume like the smell of a dozen fresh roses fogged my senses. Mika, my wolf excitedly jumping, and pawing was a new reaction of his. I had had my wolf for two years now; this strange behavior took me by surprise. I shut Mika out. I had a meeting with a potential new member of our pack. My father will never turn a wolf in need away. I am here to help him determine if any ill intent is detected from this, she wolf. The protection of our pack is our top priority.
Before I could fully gather my senses, there was a soft knock on my father's office door.
I looked up from my standing position to the left of my father's desk where he was seated. The feel of his authority was thick in the air. When the door opened, my jaw nearly hit the floor. I had to stop myself from nervously shifting back and forth on the balls of my feet. This girl is different... She had already walked midway into the room before she looked up. I could tell she was nervous. She was trying to contain her emotions and straighten her posture in confidence. It was obvious to me that she was the type of girl that wasn't one to beg. I had a feeling that if my father rejected her, that she would walk out the door and never look back. This was a trait that I found attractive in a she wolf. Too many females want to beg and cry over things that they don't get. Her eyes met mine...I had to still myself as if I was bolted to the floor. This was my miserable attempt at hiding the strange attraction that I was feeling toward this stranger. I always made it a point to be professional and respectable. My position as the future alpha depended not only on my alpha presence that naturally radiated out of me, but the respect that I received from my pack and other leaders. There was a moment where she and I had locked eyes, causing my train of thought to completely derail. Her scent got stronger the closer she got to me. My father seemed to notice my reaction. He spoke to me through our mind link
"Gabe, we need to have that talk about my future daughter-in-law. This she wolf seems to get your wolf all in a tizzy. Maybe she is the one." I glanced toward my father, giving him a stone-cold look, warning him to let it go. His mouth set in a slight grin; I could tell he was having fun at my expense. He and mother have been pressing me to pick a mate. They constantly remind me that the future of our pack is relying on me to produce an heir. I didn't believe in just picking a mate. I was hoping the Moon Goddess was planning to reveal my life partner soon.
My eyes followed the girl to the front of my father's desk, as she accepted his offer to take a seat.
"She is very beautiful," said my father. I tried to look as if there weren't voices in my head. I can't wait to hear what he has to say once we are alone. I discreetly rolled my eyes, pretending my father wasn't playing matchmaker during an actual meeting.
"This is my son and next in line to take my place as alpha of our beloved pack, Gabriel." Harper turned to look at me. I could hear her heart rate increase as she prepared to speak to me.
"It is nice to meet you, Gabriel. I am sure you will make a fine alpha when the time comes." I almost lost myself in her smile. I could tell I also had an effect on her. The thought of this made me realize just how much fun I could have with this girl. Mika wagged his tail and bounced around my head unable to contain his excitement.
"Thank you, Miss..." I said, still not knowing her name.
"Harper.... Um...Harper Rae." She said nervously. I bit my bottom lip as I tried to hide my amusement. She was so cute even though she was obviously nervous.
"Thank you, Harper, it is an honor to have you. Hopefully it is still a while now before I must take my father's place. When that time comes, I am ready." She then turned her attention back to my father who was giving me a look I know all too well.
"Not before I meet my future daughter-in-law and the next Luna of this pack. A strong alpha must have a strong and capable Luna to support him. The Luna is the heart of this pack. She will play an important role in all of our lives." Harper glanced toward me. I was unable to hide my own nervous habits at this moment, as my father finally succeeded with his evil plan. Using me to amuse himself at my expense. A red tone now warmed my cheeks. Raising my eyebrows to get a better look at him. I kept my head facing the floor, trying to conceal my embarrassment.
"Now is not the time father. We can continue this conversation later." I glared at my father, willing him to shut it.
After introductions, I took a seat next to Harper. I was apprehensive about getting closer to her, afraid my wolf Mika would get the better of me and jump on her. After sitting, I breathed deep and readied myself. Apparently, she needed our help. She said she stumbled onto the edge of our territory by accident late last night. I now know that her name is Harper. Her name was beautiful, just like her. I sense no ill intent from this girl. It didn't take long for her story to light my blood ablaze. I was boiling with anger. Thane Kago.... He put this girl through hell. His plan as Alpha of the Foul Moon Pack is unclear, but it looks like he simply wants to gain as much power and territory as he can.
"Get control of your anger." my father said through our link. "Your eyes are black; your wolf is close to taking over. I know this little lady's story is tough and tragic, but we must remain professional and calm in order to do our part as leaders of our pack. We need to be able to make a rational decision about this girl's future within our pack. I know that she has an effect on you but compose yourself until we have more information." I nodded to my father, letting him know that I will try to gather my emotions. He was right, we needed to leave emotion out of the decision concerning her position in our pack. I shut my eyes and rested my head on my hands where my elbows were propped on my knees. I am trying hard to calm myself and concentrate on what this girl was telling us. That sick piece of sh!t wanted to force her to be his mate! I am going to lose it. Clenching my jaw, the way that I do to calm myself, I kept my eyes shut desperately trying to keep my wolf locked down.
"We will kill him. We will gut him from his navel to his chin. We will wait patiently for the right time, and we will gladly anticipate the smell of his blood pooling on the ground beneath his feet." Mika's voice boomed in my head. His teeth bared as his long sharp canines beam brightly in my mind. He ran his tongue over his teeth like he couldn't wait to taste Thane's blood in his mouth. I agree with Mika's thought process. Not only has Thane put Harper through torture, but he continues to kill, steal, and r@pe women daily. He burns down villages, and tears families apart. I have a feeling Thane and I will cross paths in the future, and I will fantasize about what he has coming to him until that day arrives.
I somehow managed to keep my wolf back for the remainder of her story. I agreed with my father, Harper was no threat to our pack
"I have no issues accepting her into our pack, do you?" I ask my father through our link. My head is still resting in my hands with my eyes shut. My father's response makes me want to egg him in the head.
"I knew you would have no objections the moment she walked through my office door. HAHAHA." His laughter boomed in my head. Yeah, I'm going to egg him in the head. I heard her sniffle and despite my head being down and my eyes closed I knew she had been crying. My heart ached for her. I know that the pain of losing her parents in the way that she did must be overwhelming.
I hated the fact that she had to relive everything while telling us her story, but unfortunately it had to be done.
"Your story is very tragic young lady. I am sorry to hear of all the horrible things that you have been through in the last few months." Said my father. I was still sitting in my chair with my elbows resting on my knees. My eyes were still shut, as I was still clenching and unclenching my jaw. Still trying to get my emotions back to normal. Mika finally making himself comfortable in a lying position allowed me to think more clearly. Catching both myself and my father off guard she seemed to speak more confidently.
"Please, don't pity me. I went through hell, but I am alive. I lost my parents, but I made it out. I know my parents are watching over me. No matter how alone I feel, I will keep moving forward for them. I am a strong woman. All I need is a pack. I will get a job and support myself if given the chance."
I finally opened my eyes... Her seemingly stronger demeanor piqued my interest even more. This girl is stronger than she realizes.
"Did you say you don't have your wolf yet?" I asked her. She looked toward me.
"That is right, I have not gotten my wolf yet." I nodded,
"When is your eighteenth birthday?" This question seemingly confused her, but she answered.
"Four days from now. The day of the solar eclipse and the summer solstice." I turned my head to look at my father. We have all heard the stories about a wolf born on the day of a solar eclipse. I wonder if Harper has heard them. A solar eclipse isn't something that happens often. It is a very rare event. My father plans to throw a huge celebration to honor our Goddess of the moon, Selene. Getting lost in my thoughts. It is a good thing that my father was staying on track with why we were here. He continued his conversation with Harper, asking a question that brought me back to the topic of our meeting.
"I have heard about The Foul Moon Pack. They have not always been such a thorn in my side. They have always been a hateful pack with a handful of loyal and good wolves. I have been getting reports just how bad things have gotten with that pack. A few alphas have approached me to ask for our assistance and protection from fear of being overtaken by the Foul Moon Pack. What was your rank in your old pack?" She contemplated the question.
"Oh...um...I was considered a warrior in training." Instantly I turned to look at her surprised by what she just said.
"You trained? How often? How long have you been in training?" This question instantly seemed to excite her. Her green eyes glittered with what looked like pride. She answered my question with enthusiasm, as if this is something that she really enjoyed.
My father and I both stared at her surprised at what she just said. None of our female warriors were that involved in training, and never excited about it. My mind is going to the training field. I wonder what other warriors in training would think of her. If what she is saying is true. Maybe she could be a good influence for our females in training. Even through her clothes I could tell her body was well conditioned for combat.
"Wow, I look forward to seeing you in training." Once again, a red shade graced her beautiful face. I knew she was thinking about me watching her on the field. She bit her lip and it drove me crazy with want. I wanted to be the one biting that lip. Mika gave a low growl, agreeing with my thought process. "What are your greatest strengths?" I asked.
"Well, I try to keep myself well diverse in my specialties, but I took after my father. It is easy for me to predict my opponent's next move and implement counter attacks on the spot. I am not as good as my father.... was, but I know I can be with enough training and hard work." At this point I am thoroughly impressed by her commitment and enthusiasm when she talks about training.
What do you think Gabriel?" My father asked, dragging my attention from fantasizing about how her body must look while moving. Taking this opportunity to have a little fun I gave Harper a seductive look. Our eyes met, and the pull to make her mine was growing stronger by the second. The shiver that ran down her body didn't go unnoticed. The smell of her arousal driving me and Mika insane.
"I am sure that Harper will be a kick ass fighter. I am looking forward to watching her on the field." Feeling possessive over this girl I barely know, our eyes held contact for a moment. I would never get used to her face reddening every time her body reacted to me. It caused my mind to think of all the ways I could play with her in my bed. My father coughed, and I tried to bring myself back to reality, my father was finally ready to give Harper her answer. Rising from his chair my father walked around his desk. He placed his hand on her tiny shoulder and began,
"As alpha this pack, I am proud to exercise my authority provided to me by our beloved Moon Goddess, to accept you Harper Rae as a proud member of The Harmony Moon Pack." After being sworn in and hearing my father's final words to her. He seemingly volunteered me to escort Harper into the dining hall. He usually called an Omega to do things like that. I knew what his little game was, not trying to hide the grin on his aged face. I chuckled at the thought of what he was trying to do. I love my father; I have always respected him and trusted his opinion. He must approve of this girl for me and as a future Luna of this pack. Not really knowing her very well was not an issue here. My father had great senses that allowed him to know the personality of a person or wolf. It wasn't often that we ran across a person who was pure. And Harper was...I don't know if she knows it, but she radiates a Luna aura already. Making me realize that the Moon Goddess was hard at work here.
I held the door of my father's office open for Harper as she exited into the hallway. I internally kicked myself knowing good and well that I held that door not to just be a gentleman, but to get a good look at her a$s as she walked in front of me. I feel like a real creep right now for checking out a girl who has recently been to hell and managed to walk back out. I couldn't help it though, her long black wavy hair trailed down her back stopping mid back. I love her long hair, but right now I am thanking the Moon Goddess for not hiding this girl's shapely yet slim Waist. My eyes trailed down her back, drinking in every curve of her hourglass figure. Continuing their descent, my eyes rested on her perfectly round and toned ass. I have always been a b00ty man, but this girl is on a whole other level. In my father's office while she was introducing herself, I could tell she was having a reaction to me. The red blush that settled on her cheeks wasn't the only thing that gave her away. Her subtle hints of arousal exaggerated her scent. It made it so hard for me to lock Mika down. He was like a mad wolf, trying to take control. He begged to be let out so he could shift and claim her right then and there. I was accustomed to this type of female reaction to me, but Harper's scent overpowered my mind. I couldn't think or concentrate. I was able to see that she wasn't only built nice in the back. She had to have a nice full C cup concealed under her fitted tee shirt. Her stomach appeared to be flat and toned. I could tell she loved to train, but still has a feminine body. I was never into she wolves who had too much muscle. Yeah... her body set me ablaze with want. Her eyes... Green emeralds that seemed to constantly be rotating with hints of blue. It reminded me of little fairy's playing hide-and-seek at night in a field full of flowers. The most beautiful eyes I have ever seen. They complemented her tan skin and full lips perfectly. Today she was sad, but when my father allowed her to become part of our pack, she let herself be happy for a moment. That's when she smiled. A beautiful pristine smile that had me mesmerized. At that moment I would have done anything to keep her smiling. It felt as if her smile faded, my soul would fade out with it. If I'm not careful, this girl is going to catch me hook, line, and sinker and she's not even trying. I don't go through girls like my Beta Tanner, but I can't say I haven't had my fair share of fun. Watching Harper walk in front of me made me wonder if I'll ever be able to enjoy another one-night stand in my life.
Harper stopped to let me catch up. I hadn't realized I had let her get that far ahead of me. I guess when my mind is concentrated on a woman as tempting as Harper, my legs stop working. Well... that is the first time that has ever happened. I started to walk at a normal pace again, trying not to look like I was so eager to be near her. I needed to pull myself together and start acting like the gentleman and future Alpha that my father and mother raised me to be. Thank the Goddess my mother can't read my thoughts right now. She would try to bend me over her tiny knee to give me an old-fashioned ass whooping. I smirk at my thoughts as I try to picture my tiny 5'1 mother attempting to wrestle with my 6'2 frame. I wiped the smirk off my face as I reached Harper. Walking side by side now we were nearing the end of the hallway entering the main dining hall. As if her perfect figure and interest in being a warrior wasn't enough to have me swooning over her, the mere scent of this girl was enough to cause my wolf to howl and leap excitedly in my mind. Since we first caught her scent, Mika has been demanding I take her to my room and make her ours. He is acting like she is our mate. He is all but coming right out and saying it. What if she is our mate? Maybe we can't feel the entire extent of the mate bond because she hasn't gotten her wolf yet. If I get any worse than I am already, I'm going to kiss all my pride goodbye and beg at her feet to have me.
"So, this is the dining hall. Plates are situated at the end of the bar, just grab one and help yourself." Harper looked up to me with her eyes shining. I could see that she wasn't comfortable with this whole situation. I wish I could make it easier for her to adjust.
"Thank you, I have only been here almost a day now, and I have received more hospitality since I have been here than I did the whole time I was a prisoner to Alpha Thane." I clenched my jaw trying to stow away the anger bubbling up in me. Thinking about what he had done to Harper, and what he planned to do to her caused my blood to boil. My wolf was itching to break out, hunt that prick down and rip his heart straight out of his chest. I smiled down at Harper, and when our eyes met my anger instantly vanished. How did she have that effect on me?
"I think she's ours." Mika was having a hard time keeping his drool contained. I blocked him out, drawing my attention back to Harper.
"As long as you are here, you will be safe. Our boarders are the most well protected of any wolf pack. No one has tried to enter without permission in years. Sometimes I wish they would try. It would be less boring here." Harper giggled, causing me to feel a strange giddiness as well.
"I appreciate your offer of protection, but I won't allow anyone to put themselves in danger for me. If Thane does come for me, it is my fight alone. I won't let anyone else get wrapped up into my troubles. Your pack has been so kind to me, I am hoping I can move on from the past and become a productive member of this pack." Her fearlessness was admirable, but there is no way I would let any she wolf fight a battle like that alone. Especially my potential mate!
I decided to keep that thought to myself and turned just in time to notice Tanner my Beta coming straight towards us. He was beaming his big bright sh!t eating grin with his eyes trained straight on Harper.
"Well,well,well... this must be our newest member of the pack. Let me be one of the first to personally welcome you." He took her hand while leaning down to kiss her. Before I could stop myself, Mika had gained some control and elicited a growl that was heard through most of the dining hall. Shocked pack members stared with fearful looks plastered to their faces, but soon they went back to eating. Harper was looking at me with a worried look while Tanner looked like he regrets not stopping at the little wolf's room before walking over to talk to us. He may have accidentally relieved himself right in front of Harper. Realizing my unspoken jokes were becoming too much, I decided it was time to excuse myself. I don't understand what was causing me to have these thoughts and feelings toward Harper. I reluctantly left Harper to have breakfast with Tanner while I made my way to my room on the fifth floor. I need a cold shower and a drink. I couldn't go back around Harper until I cleaned up my act. I decided to spend the rest of the day in my room. I didn't have any responsibility today so calling it a lazy day and relaxing shouldn't be an issue. After my shower, I poured myself a stiff drink and quickly knocked it back. The liquid burned my throat on the way down, but this didn't faze me anymore. I turned on the TV and propped myself against the headboard of my bed. Flipping through the channels I stopped on one of those teen wolf shows that all the girls were so crazy over. It didn't take me long to roll my eyes at the characters. If only they knew what it was all really like... my mind drifted back to Harper. What if she is my mate?
"Then you have left her with that player of a best friend of yours to flirt with as much as he wants. I can just hear him now laying it on thick. I hope Harper doesn't fall into his trap. I would hate to kill my Beta but......"
"Mika SHUT UP!" I blocked Mika's link. If I continued to listen to him, I would find myself strangling Tanner to death before anyone could stop me. I opted for another drink and settled on a nap. Hoping that when I wake up, my attitude, thoughts, and feelings will be reset back to normal. Somehow, I don't think things will be that simple. I drifted into unconsciousness thinking about those emerald, green eyes drawing me in...
