Chapter 1
Jane's POV
"Tomorrow you would become my wife." Fernando whispered into my ear with joy as we watched the sun receding to the sea's horizon and all I could do was fake a happy smile.
As he left me, I rubbed my temple, ruining a portion of the frontals of my done hair. It was a day to my wedding yet I was filled with so much sorrow and frustration. Maybe it's because I was about to get married to the man I hated most in the world.
"Come on, Jane, let's go! It's getting late!" Fernando called me and I followed him like the slave I had agreed to be since five days ago that he engaged me officially.
"Listen." He drew nearer to me from his driver's seat. "Tomorrow is going to be our wedding... "
"I haven't forgotten, Fernando!" I almost screamed.
"Let me finish!" He raised a finger, his gray eyes lighting up. "Tomorrow is our wedding and I expect you to be of proper behavior. I don't expect you to go on with that face with which you're always with whenever I'm talking to you... You will cooperate because tomorrow is our big day." He leans back and a contended grin indents his face.
"Your big day." I whispered.
"What did you say."
I turn my face to meet his gaze. "It's your big day. You know I don't want this, Fernando!"
"Well the way I see it, you had options and you chose to marry me. Or did you not?"
My lips tightened and I'm unable to say a word. "Or you can cancel out and we'll call off the wedding. But I'm sure you know what will happen."
I avert my gaze from his and stare down at my hands. "I'm sorry."
"Of course, you know." He grabs the wheel and and starts the car.
As soon as I step into my house, I begin gathering my things. He was going to send his driver to pick me up later and take me to his sister's house for the wedding preparation.
"Come in!" I yelled as soon as I heard the knock.
The next thing, I hear the door shutting loudly and then my friend Tim's footsteps across the living room untill he nears my door and barges in.
"You're not seriously considering this, Jane!"
"I'm not considering it... I'm doing it!" I throw a bottled water into the bag before zipping it.
"You can't do this!"
"Well what choice do I have?" I look at him for the first time.
"You're selling yourself to this crazy man who doesn't even care about you! Your entire life and your happiness!"
"Tim. I have to do this." I draw nearer to him. "If I don't, you know what would happen to me... To my mum!"
"You have sacrificed enough, Jane. I can't just imagine you doing this for a woman who doesn't even care about you!"
"That woman is still my mother, Tim. I can't watch her die when I can stop it..."
"By selling yourself to Fernando."
"This is my decision and I'm taking it. That's final." I turn from him and grab my bag.
The silence thickens and I'm holding myself from cracking up with tears.
"I wish you a happy married life." He mumbled and l listened to his footsteps as he left. My heart shattered once again as he slammed the door.
I had known Fernando for five years. I used to be just a casual bartender at his bar. I had always been very uncomfortable with the way he stared at me. Despite him being my employer, I didn''t take any nonsense from him and made it clear to him that I wasn't going to be a part of the young girls that he toyed and played with.
I had previously lost my dad so it was pretty difficult surviving with my mum alone.
Fernando accepted her job request as his cashier. I wasn't very happy about it then because my mother was a habitual drinker. Her monthly payment may not even be enough for her to get all the bottles she needed. And she had a no good boyfriend Julio who was feeding off of her. I guess I had foreseen what would happen.
But I hadn't imagined that it would be as bad as she letting Julio trick her into borrowing so much money from her for his gambles. In the end, she lost six million dollars to Julio- Fernando's money.
And the worst of it, when Julio realized that he had taken that much and had lost it all to his gamble, he ran away and left my mother to face the consequences alone.
Fernando didn't take it lightly. He had my mum locked up and he promised to charge her if she didn't provide his money within a year.
I began to work my ass off and beg relatives to pay the debt. Fernando was only being nicer with my mum's punishment because of his interest in me. But it still didn't stop him from taking my salary month after month because of the debt.
After four months, I could only pay back, three hundred and fifty dollars.
"Are you sure you would be able to pay back my money before the year ends?" Fernando had asked me.
"I could spare your mother and overlook her debt. All you'll have to do is to marry me."
I almost spat in his face. I refused plainly. But when my mother heard, she spoke to me from behind her bars, blaming me for refusing the offer.
"I don't love, Fernando!" I had told her.
"Would you rather he kills me?"
Despite everything, I loved my mum dearly.
I had to be the responsible daughter that I have always been.
"But if you can return my money today, you're free to walk away. You and your mum." Fernando told me because he knew that even if he gave me another year, I wouldn't be able to get his money back.
I had no choice.
I grab my bag when I hear the car honking outside.
When I got outside, the driver spoke patiently.
"Your husband- to- be asked me to bring you home."
I draw in a deep breath. "I'm ready."
Chapter 2
Jane's POV
The next morning, I was facing the mirror. I was wearing a simple white sequin dress. Fernando's sister had done my make-up herself and all I could think of was how I was about to sell myself to save my mother.
The driver walks in.
"It's time." He called from behind his dark shades and I hurried into my shoes. It was going to be just simple wedding. Fernando and I and the bishop and his parents maybe.
For now I just wanted to get it over with.
The car started off slowly and my mind was totally void.
"You must be thirsty." The driver called tapping the bottled water in the center console.
"As usual." I exhale and pull the bottle.
I had drank up to half of the water when my phone started ringing.
"What's taking you so long?" Fernando demanded.
"We're on our way." I replied calmly, ending the call before he could say anything else.
"Could you go faster?" I asked the driver sitting in front of me but he gave me no response.
I shake my head and arrange my headdress with the screen of my phone as a mirror.
Just as I was staring at my reflection, Tim's name popped up on the screen and I sighed.
"I thought you wouldn't call." I whispered. But just as I was about to answer the call, the car took a sharp swerve off the main road that got my phone flying out of my hand.
I struggled to hold myself back to the back seat before casting a look at the driver.
"What's going on?"
But again, he doesn't give me a response. I was seized by panic when I looked to see that he had taken a different rout entirely off the road that led to the church.
"Where are you taking me?" I demanded.
"To your husband to be."
"This isn't the way!"
"Not Fernando." He replied coldly and my eyes dilated in shock. My phone stared ringing again and I grabbed it from the floor.
"Tim, help! I'm being kidnapped!" I cried into the phone.
"Jane?" As soon as he spoke, the driver reached back and seized the phone from my hand before bringing the car to a halt.
We were now parked under the bridge and the road was deserted.
Intense fear crept into my heart and I froze in the backseat as the driver opened the door and pulled me out. He led me to the front seat and as soon as he sat me down, the phone started ringing again.
"You're going to pick the call now and tell him that you're fine and were just joking."
"What?"
"Do it now." He raises his had and I see a gun in his grip.
I scream aloud and covered my mouth almost immediately. "Do what I ask now." He points the gun next to my head.
"Hi, Tim."
"Jane, what's going on?"
"Nothing."
"What do you mean nothing."
"I was just pulling your legs. I'm absolutely fine."
"Jane."
I let out a shrieking laughter. "I'm fine."
"Where are you now?"
My gaze rolls to the driver but the moment I feel the gun's snout touching my temple, I avert my gaze. "On my way to the wedding hall."
"Alright..."
The driver rolls him finger in a circle for me to wrap it up.
"Alright I gotta go, Tim. We'll talk later." I said before Tim could speak and the driver seizes the phone from me, switching it off right in front of me.
I have pulled the same prank on Tim more than twice. How would he know that this time around I was really in trouble.
"Please... What do you want?"
He takes the gun from my head and tucks it in. "I'm sorry I had to do that. El jefe would be furious with me if he found out I put a gun to huge head."
"What? Who's El jefe?"
"Your husband as I stated earlier. I'm taking you to him now."
"No! There's been a mistake. I'm not engaged to anyone else."
I reach for the door and try opening it but it was already locked.
I press my back to the seat in full panic. I had soaked my dress with perspiration now.
"Hello!" He spoke to the cell phone in his hand. "Yes, El jefe... I have her."
I could recall El jefe meant 'the boss' in spanish. Who was he and why did he want me?
When he ended the call, I drew near. "Look! Trust me, you have got the wrong person!" I tried to explain but my words started collapsing as they reach my lips. My eyes were getting heavy to keep up and I felt my head spinning.
What was happening to me?
My back dropped drastically against the seat, my entire body going numb while he just kept driving into the dark.
The water bottle beside me was the last thing my eyes captured before they closed completely.
By the time I woke up, I found myself lying in a small bed. The room I was in was dark except for a small bedside lamp that illuminated the space around me.
I rubbed my eyes before my brain slowly started a replay of the last incidence.
Where am I?
"You're finally awake Lucia." A masculine voice sends me jolting against the bedframe.
I quickly rise to a sitting position, folding my legs to the side. In the dark room, I traced the lines to a figure seated at the far end of the bed opposite me.
From the figure I was certain it was a man, in a suit, sitting with his right leg crossed over the left. He was relaxed on the seat so that I could see a portion of his bare bulky chest peering out between his lapels. I could not see his face clearly but I could trace the line of his hair dropping over one side of his face.
What did he just call me? Lucia?
He gets up and I am impressed by how tall and broad he was. As he walked towards me, I found myself drawing nearer to the bed board. My vision was still a bit blurry and the room's partial darkness wasn't helping.
"Who are you?" I asked in a shaky voice.
"It's really good to hear your voice again." He whispered as he reached the side of my bed.
Chapter 3
Jane's POV
I still found it hard to believe any of this. This strange man before me claimed to know me yet I was very certain that I had never seen him in my life.
"I am not Lucia! You're mistaking me for someone else!" I told him but he insisted otherwise.
I lost my calm as well as my fear and started throwing a tantrum. I told him I wouldn't let him keep me here. He aught to let me go if he knew what was best for him he still insisted I needed to rest from my journey and that he would see me later.
As he stepped out of the room, I hear him locking the door.
I didn't know what to do. I was so frustrated and couldn't believe any of it. I had thought my day was going bad enough when I was going to marry Fernando. But now I was kidnapped by someone who thinks I'm his girl?... wife?
After wasting all of my energy on hitting the door and yelling for my freedom, I got tired and returned to my bed, sitting with my head in my hands when suddenly the door creaks open.
I spring up only to see a lady walking in. Her stilettos made a loud noise on the floor and she switched on the light so that I could now see properly.
"I'm Emily." The fairly tall lady with a french bun announced in a sharp tone. "and I'm here if you need anything."
"I want to go home!" I said aloud.
She sighs and releases her hands to her sides. "I'll be bringing your meal shortly."
"I'm not hungry."
"El jefe will be angry if you don't eat."
"I said I am not hungry!" My voice rises in frustration.
How on earth could I be comfortable eating? I was so scared to death.
"I'll be back with your meal and your dress."
"Dress?"
"Yes. El jefe wants you in his room once you're dressed."
"What?" I couldn't believe my ears. Why did he want me? At first I made it clear that I wasn't going unless he was going to come down here himself and drag me.
But I didn't really have the energy right now for all of that and maybe I should talk with him and explain to him that I'm not whom he thinks I am. Lucia or whoever.
In a few minutes, I was dressed up by Emily in a fitted red dress.
"And you mustn't address him as we do. Call him Quinn, that's his name."
Whatever! There was no way I could have addressed my abductor with so much respect in the first place.
As she leads me to meet her boss, I'm observing each corner of the building that we passed through. There were guards in suits standing around. When we passed the mezzanine, I glare down to see the big hall room.
I could swear that I had never been inside such a beautiful mansion. But the state of apprehension that I was in presently did not allow me to take my time to admire the gigantic glassy chandeliers and the luxurious furniture.
"This way."
I hear her voice and turn back to my front where Emily was quickly leading me.
We stopped in front of a large door where two mighty looking guards were standing.
Again, my heart began to beat uncontrollably fast.
I made up my mind that I was going to talk to him reasonably and try to make him understand that he had the wrong girl.
I would make sure I act very calm and composed so he would listen to me and let me go.
The doors were pushed open by the guards and I got in quietly.
I hold my hands together in front and gaze into the room.
As I hear the sound of the door shutting loudly, I look back to realize that I was in darkness now that the doors were closed.
I face the space before me again with my heart shuddering. I catch the strong smell of alcohol mixed together with room fragrance and warmth.
I jolt when the light suddenly switches on and I see him standing before me with one of his feet on the bed and his hand holding a glass.
He looked younger than he had appeared earlier with his thick wavy brown hair swept back over his high arched eyebrows and blue hypnotic green eyes. I hadn't mistaken his great height. He was now in a baggy long sleeved shirt with one hand in the pocket of his joggers. His eyes appeared darker as he stared at me with head tilted back so that his gaze settled on me... Or a part of me.
His long fingers lower the glass of liquor by the rim to the small table before the bed. For now I was too worries about my situation to gush over his looks.
"Lucia." He whispers and I step a bit backwards.
"You look so beautiful... I longed to see you in this dress once again and finally... here."
"Look!" I stretch a hand forward to halt his movement towards me. "I think you're mistaking. I am not Lucia. I'm Jane!" I spread my hand on my chest. " I think you have mistaken me for... "
"Shhhhh." His index finger crossed his lips and his nose, his eyes refusing to move off me.
"Do you not understand? Your man drugged me and kidnapped me on my wedding. I need to go back."
"I'm sincerely sorry that you had to go through such disrespectful abuse but it was necessary. You're not going back to that man. You're here now and you're mine."
That man? Did he know Fernando?
"You can't keep me here! I must get married to him! Someone's fate depends on it!"
"Your mother's?"
My lips tighten around the other and I freeze in shock as he comes closer to me.
"How did you know?" I whispered.
"It doesn't matter. I'm going to send him the money you owe him. And I'll make him understand that you sent it to him. After that, he'll have no choice but to let your mother go."
"And then what? You've bought me?"
"Exactly." He answered coldly and I take a step back as he was getting even closer.
His suffocating fragrance fills the air and I struggle not to twitch my nose.
He raises his hand and stretches it near my face. I shriek silently as his fingers trail up my bare arm, his touch sending new shivers through me.
"Lucia..." He whispers again and his lips carve up near my nose.
Overcome with intense fright, I shift from him and yell.
"I am not Lucia!"
As if agitated by my guts to pull out of his grip, he seizes my arm and draws me up against his hard body and I feel his other hand slowly wrap around my side and spread over my back.
"Be still, Lucia..." He whispers and my body tenses up with sick as I feel his hand slide up my back, then down my waist.
