Tessa Marvins sat alone at a table littered with bottles, some empty, and others still full, her fingers clenched tightly on a glass of drink half way gone. Reigns and Tiles bar buzzled with loud music and blue lights, Loud enough to make you shout if you needed to speak to your partner. The stench of strong alcohol and cigarettes filled the air, with half naked ladies dancing on poles to the rhythm of the loud, or rather noisy music.
Tessa sat alone, indifferent to the noise and conversations around her, her heart aching, her eyes bloodshot red. She had come here to wash out all of her sorrows and rinse out all of the pains she felt inside.
The loud music was not enough to fade out the echoes that kept replaying in her head. Her mind drifted to events of this evening. The sound of her sister moaning loudly under him, her boyfriend, no, now her ex boyfriend, in their bedroom, banging her with reckless abandon.
Their vigorous activity came to a halt when her briefcase fell to the ground with a loud thud.
Tessa watched him climb slowly off her and her bitch of a sister Abigail desperately tried to cover her naked self with the blankets, looking all flushed and used.
"What's going on here?", she asked, her mind turning blank with confusion and disbelief.
"What don't you understand here Tessa?", he asked with a disgusted look on his face as he leaned against the headboard and wrapped his arms around Abigail, bringing her closer to his embrace.
"How long has this been going on? Cheating on me with my sister on our bed, few days to our engagement and still having the guts to pretend like nothing's wrong?", she laughed, not in humour, in anger. Her eyes stung with unshed tears.
"Tessa please.. Cut the crap. I'm not interested in those dramas. Few days to our engagement? This relationship has been over a long time ago, I'm surprised you could only see that now. Oh.. right. You're too busy. You don't even spend time with me. You pretend to be all modest and won't give up your dignity. What can I say? You couldn't consider me your boyfriend. I needed a break from all those dramas", he scoffed, his voice tinged with annoyance.
Tessa smirked, "A break? Is this what you call a break? Sleeping with my sister on our bed? I've been busy.. with what? Working devotedly for your company. You could've ended the relationship without insulting me like this.", her voice rose in anger.
"Now that you've caught me, I think you've realized you don't have a place here. You may as well leave. There's no engagement happening between us", he said acting all indifferent and unbothered about her feelings.
The girl beside him smiled sheepishly, glaring at Tessa, but she ignored her. The fury building up inside her was directed at the man in front of her. Or rather, the boy in front of her. She couldn't believe she had spent two years loving someone who had no intention of loving her back.
"You're disgusting", she whispered.
"C'mon Tessa, we both know how this is. You're just someone I picked up from the wrong side of the city, and gave you a good life. You should be thankful to me for that privilege, not come here being some drama queen", he said, mockingly.
Tessa was stunned, shocked and number from the betrayal. "Good life? Keep your good life to yourself. Here I was, thinking that what we shared was love. But now I see you've only ever seen me as a garbage you picked on the streets", she laughed dryly.
"You're not even a legitimate child, just a leech feeding off from the Marvins family, and you think you can use me to climb up the social ladder. You had the guts to dream that big"he scoffed.
Her eyes glistened with tears, filled with pain and betrayal, but she didn't let them drop. She forced it all in, she couldn't let him see her weak, this scumbag and her asshole sister didn't deserve her tears.
She picked up her suitcase, glaring at them both, "I never have the habit of staying where I'm not accepted. And when you realize you've lost the only real thing in your life, I'd be far too gone by then", she said and left the house in an elegant and graceful manner with nothing but her pride.
She took one last look at the house. This furnished multi million dollar house had been what she called home in the past two years. She had gotten used to being called the lady of the house and the future wife to a multi millionaire, but reality dawned on her that all of this was a sham. A total facade.
To him, she was nothing but trash he picked up from the roadside, bathed her, and adorned her with gold ornaments and jewelries. He gave her a life many people only dreamt of at the expense of her pride and dignity.
A self deprecating smile formed on her lips as she walked out of the building. She let out a sigh coated in pain and humiliation, but a tiny hint of relief.
Tessa downed the remaining contents of the glass in one gulp as the painful memories flooded her mind.
Once she left, she had made up her mind. No more rich men, no more smooth talking liars wrapped in designer suits, no more empty promises wrapped in dollar signs. She was done. Done with the lies and the love that made her ache.
She paid her bills and quietly exited the bar. The cold air hit through her as she stepped out, brought out her phone and called her best friend Ava. She needed a place to crash for the night.
She staggered across the busy streets in the dark nights, her mind swirling with pained emotions. A piercing screeching of brakes seemed to pull her thoughts back to reality as she turned to see the vehicle few centimeters away from her. She fell to the ground with a loud thud.
"What tha hell?", Dorian cursed as he pulled the brakes instantly. If he had pulled it, even a second later, he would probably have been met with a pile of broken bones from the lady who just appeared from nowhere into the middle of the road.
"What's going on?", a dark cold voice capable of sending shivers echoed from the back seat. The voice belonged to Roy Dashiel - the rumored Mafia billionaire and CEO of Dashiel Empire. His eyes glinted coldly in the dark showing no attempt to hide his impatience.
"We may have hit somebody. I'll go check it out", Dorian, his personal assistant and closest acquaintance said and climbed out of the black sports car in a hurry.
Tessa fell to the ground, hitting her butt painfully on the tarred roads, she winced in pains unable to get up, both from the pains and dizziness of having drunk much. A pair of polished black Italian leather shoes appeared in her presence and she struggled to lift her eyes up, "Hey. What are you doing jumping into the middle of the road. Do you want to get yourself killed?", Dorian shouted at her in frustration.
Tessa lifted her eyes and scanned him, the designer suits, the polished shoes and the flashy car, she scoffed,'Another set of scumbag rich men', she thought before slipping into unconscioness.
Panic set in as Dorian saw the figure lose strength, he crouched down to catch her before she could hit the ground. The strong stench of beer and alcohol filled his nostrils. 'She had been drinking?', he thought. He took one quick look at the messy figure in his arms.
Her cheeks were flushed red and she was looking pale. Her eyes seemed swollen like she had been... crying?
"Hey. Wake up!", he shook her body while calling out. "Who comes to sleep in the middle of the road?", he vented I'm frustration.
At this time, people had begun to gather in small groups watching the scene in front of them.
"What's keeping you there for so long?", an impatient voice shouted behind him. He had exhausted every bit of patience in him and couldn't take it in any longer.
Knowing his outrageous temper, Dorian quickly released her from his hold and went to Roy who had already come out of the car.
"The girl.. fainted. She looks drunk and she collapsed.", he stammered.
"Then just shove her aside and get me out of this damn place", he scolded Dorian, his voice tinged with annoyance.
"This area.. is bad. She may be taken.. advantage of.", he stuttered, remembering her innocent and helpless look.
An indescribable look plastered on his expressionless face, his gaze, cold and taunting, "Since when is it your duty to pick up girls from the streets?"
"Sir.. I'm just saying. We can just drop her off at the hospital. Leaving her here might.. be too dangerous." Dorian said.
Something in him had stirred and he was compelled to have compassion on the little lady. She looked like a little lamb, worn out and hurting and could be devoured by lurking wolves at any point.
The crowd had begun to gather and their soft murmurs and gossips were blown into their ears by the wind,"Look, they almost ran into a lady, and she has fainted"
"Seems they plan on leaving her here. Is this a hit and run situation?"
Indistinct chatters and murmurs filled the air and we're beginning to rise.
Roy cast a glance at the unconscious lady on the floor. Her long hair splattered across her face, shielding it from view. She looked like a gracious lamb brought down to a pitiful state.
"Toss her in the back seat and drive!", he issued a command and walked out to settle in the passenger seat. He had just gotten to the front of the car when a phone rang. He paused in his tracks and looked down to see the phone lying beside the girl ringing. He picked it up without sparing her a glance.
The caller ID showed 'Ava with a lot of heart emojis'. Once he connected the call, his deep voice rang,"Come pick her up at City hospital", he said and hung up the phone directly without giving the caller a chance.
Dorian was startled for a moment, this CEO was being too generous. Giving up his back seat for a messy stranger? No one, not even himself had been privileged enough to get in there.
"What are you still waiting for?"Roy yelled in total agitation.
"I'm onto it", he shouted and immediately carried the unconscious Tessa into the car and soon the car sped off, straight to City Hospital.
Tessa woke up, and her eyes scanned the unfamiliar environment. It took her a while to process this new development and when she fully woke up, she saw the IV drip injected to her hand that had already finished. 'What happened? How did she end up in a hospital?', she racked her brains trying to organize her thoughts and the breakup and betrayal of the previous night rapidly flooded her mind.
The relationship she once prided in had ended shamefully, her going to the bar to lift up her mood and almost hit by another rich scumbag.
The door opened and Ava walked in, carrying a tray of food, "Girl!", Ava called out to her as she approached. "What's wrong with you girl. How did you end up in such a pity state?", she asked concerned.
"You brought me here?", Tessa asked.
"No I didn't. I was called to come pick you up here, and I am so shocked to find you like this. What happened to you and where's Cole?"she asked.
"Cole?! That scumbag!"she cursed and narrated her ordeal to Ava.
"I always knew that fool was a double edged sword and that slut of your sister? She does have guts", Ava was furious. "I'm sorry you had to go through all that alone. I'll take you home now". She comforted her.
Meanwhile, in the CEO office at Dashiel Empire, Roshan came in to deliver a report,"Sir. We finally found a seller"
Roshan is the right hand man to Roy Dashiel. All his underworld business and operations are personally handled by him while Dorian takes on his office matters.
"Someone willing to sell their daughter?"he asked. "Yes, we can come this evening to see the goods."
"Hmmn" he replied, dismissing him at once.
"If I get a hold on that fox, I don't think I'll be able to not strangle her", Ava grumbled, still venting out her frustration. She felt immensely sorry for Tessa. She was her best friend after all.
Tessa laid down on the couch smudging the pillow to her chest.
"I refuse to see you broken like this Tess. That foolish boy can't get away with this. He couldn't even be humane enough to leave you with any thing. You've been working in his company for two good years, but there's nothing to account for it"
"I can't do anything even if I want to", how else could I pay for the 'good life' he had given to me?", she murmured.
"What foolish good life are we talking about here? You have solely kept that company running till this very moment. What an ungrateful bastard! I've always known you as a smart girl, how did you end up being played to this point?", Ava grumbled.
"Yes I was foolish. Really foolish ", Tessa murmured, her voice broken in resigned abandonment.
Her heart ached seeing Tessa like this. She was usually a lively girl, bright and happy. How did she now resemble a mourning widow. Cole Carter was not worth all this. She took her seat on a small stool next to Tessa, "Do you think Cole Carter is worth your breaking down?"
"What?", Tessa asked, not fully grabbing her.
"Tessa. Do you believe me when I say you deserve better than this? It's that fvcking Cole Carter who lost and not you. You are a gem Tessa. You are strong. You are brave. You are smart. He lost and you won?", Ava said, her voice rising, trying to replenish her lost confidence.
"How do I do that Ava? I have nothing. No job, no asset, no money, no house. I have nothing to my name. Where do I start from?", she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"We'll start from somewhere Tess. I know your capabilities. You can prove him wrong ", Ava consoled.
"I'll definitely do that. Eventually, I'll bring him to his knees and make him regret what he's done." Tessa whispered, a rare glint of determination flashed in her eyes.
"You can do that Tess. Eventually, you'll make him beg. But first, you have to freshen up, you smell like a horse's mouth right now", Ava joked trying to lighten up the mood and Tess threw a pillow at her, "A horse's mouth? Do I really smell that horrible?", she bantered, sniffing herself, "Eww! I do smell like puke."
"Hurry and freshen up, release those stench, will ya?" Ava teased and they both laughed.
The harmonious moment was put to a halt when Tessa's phone rang. Tessa's mom Viviane called.
The call connected, "Tessa. How are you doing?", the voice from the other end asked.
"I'm okay mom", Tessa simply replied in those three words.
She had barely finished speaking when an arrogant voice shouted from the other end, "Tell her already to make sure she comes home this evening." This was her step father -Diego Marvins speaking. Viviane was her biological mother, she had her three years before she married this stepfather, Diego. He had never considered her his daughter, just simply providing her basic needs and playing the role of a father for the world to see.
His legitimate daughter Abigail Marvins was her step sister, the legitimate and only Heir to the Marvins company. She was the favored one, and be often overlooked all of her excesses and spoiled her to a fault. He had made it clear that he wouldn't let another man's child inherit any of his properties, so since she turned adult, he sent her off to take care of herself.
Tessa remained grateful at least for the years he took her in and gave her a name and a home. To her, that was enough and she wouldn't ask for more. If he was calling her home, it meant the issue to be addressed was very important.
"Tessa. Your father wants you to come back home this evening", she heard her mother say.
"Got it", she replied and the call ended.
"What do they want from you?", Ava asked in curiosity.
"He wants me to be home this evening", she replied.
"What's going on?"
"I don't know. Didn't ask"
"Well, that's a good opportunity. I'll come with you so I can personally deal with that boyfriend snatcher myself ", Ava said.
"No need Ava. I do not want to cause any troubles. I'll just see them and be back tomorrow" Tessa insisted.
"Alright, if you insist. But when I get my chance, I'll make sure to twist that little brat's ears. Now go take a shower already", she hurried Tessa into the bathroom.

A convoy of black tinted sports car pulled up at the Marvins family estate. The rumored Mafia boss, King of the underworld and hidden from common eye, stepped out of one of the identical sports cars, his train of trained guards stationed around him creating an oppressive and intimidating atmosphere. Cloaked in a jet black cape that dripped from shoulder to floor length. He exuded a majestic and charming look that gives you butterflies.
Sunset poured on his refined and perfectly sculptured figures, giving off the vibes of every lady's prince charming. But beneath those charming looks, lay eyes devoid of Expressionless and ruthless, Cold and chilling to the marrow, hid beneath the dark shade sunglasses and a barely lit cigarette. He took off the glasses and a pair of dark brown eyes blinked, carefully taking awareness of his surroundings. His well trimmed long lashes fluttered rapidly. He looked like a god who had come down, so close, yet unattainable. He checked the time on his customized black ice million dollar wrist watch, before walking gracefully into the Villa.
