The dappled sun shone through the trees, creating mysterious shadows, the blue sky was dotted with fluffy white clouds that drifted lazily in the gentle breeze, the blazing midday sun shone relentlessly on the hikers, and the roads shimmered in the heat of the midday sun, and the sunlit skyscrapers pierced the hot, blue sky.
The afternoon sun bathed the buildings in its warm light; specks of dust seemed to dance in the shaft of afternoon sunlight that slanted through the café windows.
I stood dressed in black leather trousers paired with a crop top, an apron tied around my waist as I carried trays of food to different customers, the Café was a fancy one, designed for both the classy and poor, I served food of different kinds, our best food was the Italian kind as the owner was from Italy, the walls were painted golden giving it an amazing palace flare, the different menu was hanged on different pillars, freshly plucked roses on each table, and a soft blues playing in the background.
The amazing aroma that left the freshly baked bread I carried made my mouth water as I placed it gently on my customer's table; my stomach grumbled begging to be fed.
A soft tap on my back startles me as I turn around to first meet a muscled chest, a smile immediately forms on my face the moment I see the owner of the chest.
"Matt!" I yelled hugging him, a bright smile on my face.
"Mia!" he said patting my head.
"So you finally decided to visit me, I was thinking you would visit me after when I turned a hundred-year-old," I said dragging him to the counter with a stern look on my face.
"Awww you look cute when angry," he said softly pinching my cheeks.
"Matthew!" I grumbled glaring at him.
"Amelia," he said chuckling.
"This isn't funny" I shoulder and gave him a cold glare, he quickly sobers up, muffling his laughter as he stared at me.
"What the fuck is funny," I said glaring at him.
"Nothing Mia, I'm sorry for not coming to see you I have been busy with work you know"
"Yeah yeah, that one excuse" I grumbled.
"Which is the truth, Mia," he said patting my head.
"So how is my darling Amelia doing," he said pulling me to a booth.
"I have missed you, I had a lot of things to tell, and I missed my gossip mate, my best friend," I said pouting my lips.
"You could have called," he said with a cheeky smile.
"Like I didn't try that," I said glaring at him.
"And?" he questioned with raised eyebrows.
"And it never fucking went through matt, always going into voice mail," I said glaring at him; he seemed to heave a sigh of relief as he gave me a sly smile.
"I have missed you too hazelnut," he said pinching my cheeks with a wide smile on his lips.
"What would you love to eat?" he said picking up the menu.
"French toast and scrambled eggs" I hurriedly said with a cheeky smile.
"Oh I see someone has been craving for those" he chuckled calling Katie my co-worker.
She hurriedly came to our table, straightening her dress.
"Oh hey Matt, you finally came around," she said with a sweet smile.
"Yeah I did" he smiled looking at me.
"So what would you like?" she asked sweetly, batting her lashes trying to get his attention.
"Yeah French toast and scrambled eggs for Mia, then a cup of cappuccino for me," he said still staring at the menu.
"Is that all?" she questioned biting her lips.
"Yes," Matt said finally sparing her a glance, she takes the opportunity to bite her lips seductively, batting her eyelashes she walks off swaying her hips slightly.
"Whoa," he said shaking his head.
"She went hard this time," he said chuckling.
"You should give her a try matt," I said with a soft smile.
"Yeah Mia, but my job, you know it's in Italy, very far from here how would I communicate with her"
"You know there is this new device called a Smartphone," I said glaring at him.
"And what about seeing her?" he asked.
"You can always book a flight for her matt or visit her," I said folding my hands.
"Easier said than done Mia, moreover I'm gay," he said with a sly smile.
"You are gay!" I exclaimed.
"No silly," he said chuckling.
"But I can't date Katie"
"Why? Is anything wrong with her?" I asked my eyebrows raised.
"No Mia nothing is wrong with her"
"Then why do you keep turning her down, she has been trying to get your attention for like forever" I exclaimed raising my hands.
"That's it Mia I don't want a girl that seeks my attention, I want to be the one to be following her like a lost puppy"
"You are just looking for a silly excuse to not date her right?" I said folding my arms.
"Yeah" he smiled looking everywhere but me, I sigh heavily as Katie comes in with the food we ordered, she tried to get Matt's attention again but he wasn't even sparing her a glance.
"Here's your order," she said softly staring directly Matt, a deep frown etched on her face as matt continues browsing through his phone, she looks at me with raised eyebrows and all I could do was shrug my shoulders, she places my plate of food and leaves.
"Look how desperate she is, you are something else matt," I said digging into my food.
"Yeah yeah"
Matt phone suddenly lit up and he picks up immediately going into serious mode, within a second his face fell and a shocked expression was etched on his face.
"What!" Matt yelled abruptly standing up from the booth his face filled with anger and shock, it was already sunset and the customers were reducing as it was almost closing time, he was still engrossed in his call as he walked out of the café door when Katie approached.
"It seems like work has called his attention again," she said referring to the call.
"Yeah probably," I said with a soft smile as I looked out the window.
"Well you should lock up and head home it's almost seven you don't want to walk home alone in the streets of Michigan," She said cleaning her hands on her dress with her handbag hung loosely on her back, she left me all alone in the café with a few customers.
I craned my neck again outside the window to see Matt heading back with a grim look on his face, I quickly rushed to him.
"What's wrong?" I asked a tight smile on my lips.
"Well...uh... one of my work partners, he is close to me, he was attacked on the road and all the goods we were to take to the airport today were stolen..."
"What!" I exclaimed holding my mouth in shock.
"Yeah a massive loss Mia, and I was called for duty, I have to go, Mia, promise I'll visit soon,n," he said, and before I could refuse he was already out the door, the bell dinging as he left.
WTF!!!
Seriously he just abandoned me without even a hug, what kind of job doesn't give you space, I mean even my waitress job though stressful we always have a break to spend time with our loved ones, I probably won't see him again till Christmas.
I released a breath I didn't realize I was holding as I packed up the remaining dishes to the dishwasher, cleaning up the tables and setting the plate in the plate rack, I untie my apron and hang it at the apron rack, grabbing my bag I lock the front door of the Café, turning the open sign to close, I went through the back grabbing a bag of dirt I dumped it into an incinerator and locked up the café.
I walked out to the streets contemplating if I should follow the shortcut through an alley or the main street that would take an hour before I get home.
I finally agreed on the short cut, as I sauntered into the lonely alley, the eerily silence of the night dark murky corners creeped me out creating shivers down my back, the air was really cold and for some reason, my heart dropped into my stomach, I was starting to get anxious and nauseous as I walked through the dark alley my handbag clutched tightly to my side as I walked, turning on another street a loud bang has me falling to my feet.
The sound of a gunshot erupted in the air, I shivered slightly my eyes widening in shock at the sound of a gunshot, the rational part of me was yelling for me to run home but the irrational part of me, which was the most stupid part of me wanted to see the cause of the gunshot, and I couldn't help but wonder what was the main reason for the gunshot, I wanted to know why and what was happening like always, and out of curiosity I wandered towards the sound of the gunshot, I crossed allies after allies, taking turns trying to find where I last heard the gunshot.
Another gunshot erupted in the air, this time louder and closer, meaning I was approaching it, I ambled through the dark alley slowly and finally came to a clearing, this alley lead to a park, the full moon shone above us as I slowly moved to the end of the alley, resting my back at the wall I see a large group of men all dressed in black tuxedo holding different size and type of guns, their SUVs' were parked at the entrance of the park, two men stood opposite each other, glaring at each other like it were a staring contest, two dead bodies was lying on the floor their hands tied behind their back, blood gushed out of their head which had a bullet hole In it.
"You dare challenge me Dylan?" the man on the left asked his expression stone cold, the light from the moon wasn't bright enough to describe him but I could tell he was beautiful.
"Oh please Don, you think I'm scared of you, those goods were meant to be mine but you forcefully took them"
"Now I have gotten back what is mine with a few collateral damage I hope you don't mind," The man on the right said with an evil smirk.
"Oh I do mind," he said and as if he had given the sign to shoot, bullets from different guns went through the hearts of many me, it felt like slow motion as blood splattered out of their chest and mouth, their painful cry and the sound of the gunshots pierced my ears, a bullet hit the guy on the right, Dylan on his legs and he cries out falling to the ground his face connoted in anguish, he cradled his leg inserting his hand into the bullet hole and pulling out the bullet with a loud groan.
"How does it feel? How does it feel to be shot in the legs like this?" the guy Don asked shooting him on his other leg, Dylan cried out in pain as his other leg was shot, his bone broken or probably paralyzed.
"Don please" he begged using his hands to draw himself away from Don.
"I don't listen to pleas, you dared challenge me? Your Don? The mafia King? Huh?" He said raising his gun in the air.
Wait did he just say Mafia King?
A loud gunshot shock me out of my thoughts as Dylan lay on the floor lifeless, I whimpered struggling to get on my feet as I supported myself with the wall, clumsy as I was I hit a container I wasn't aware was at my back while trying to stand, all the Men including the Mafia king turned their heads to my direction, the Don eyes squinted and looked directly into my eyes his eyes widen in shock as he had probably seen me, soon a torch was flickered at my face and that was all it took for my mind to say the word.
"Run!!"
I ran as fast as my legs could carry me not daring to look back in fear of what I might see, I ran, I ran back to the streets following the main road to my house, it was a bad idea following the alleyway, it was even more of a stupid Idea to listen to my irrational side, I ran back hope on reaching my street I slowed down taking in gulps of air, I gasped loudly holding my stomach trying to get as much air as possible into my lungs.
I finally turned around to see that no one was chasing or following me, come to think of it I never heard thumps or gunshot when I ran, no one followed me or ran after me, there was no car tires screeching or horns, no blinding lights from car head, they never followed me.
But I had always read that the mafia lord would chase her and take her as his, but it was a very different thing in my situation, come to think of it I did the same stupid thing I cursed the female lead in the books always do, I let curiosity get the better of me.
For some reason, the fictional part of me wished the don had chased me, probably whip me off my feet, but that was all fiction, none of it happened in real life, I trailed home feeling weak and deranged from all the running I had done, entering the porch of my house I opened my bag inserting my hands in it to bring out my purse which had the house key in it but I came up with nothing and that was when it clicked, it panics my purse had fallen off in the alley, that maybe probably why they didn't chase me.
"Fuck!" I exclaimed raking my hand through my hair, Grandma must be sleeping already and I didn't keep the spare key outside.
"Fuck!" I yelled again hitting my head on the door.
"Grandma!" I yelled banging it.
"Grandma!" I yelled again, there was some shuffling coming from inside before I had the calm soft voice of my Grandma.
"I'm coming," she said, I rested the side of my body on the wall waiting for the door to open, a click and the creaking of the door indicated that the door had been opened.
"Grandma" I cried out hugging her before pulling her into the house and locking the door.
"What is wrong Amelia?" she questioned seeing my tear-stained panicked face.
"oh, nothing is wrong mum just that I am stressed out and also I was scared of the dark, no big deal," I said trying to convince her, she looked at me with raised eyebrows not believing me but she doesn't question me.
"So would you like to eat I made Chinese rice with turkey I know you would love it," she said with a bright smile, though I didn't have the appetite to eat her smile alone made me want to eat the food, she probably made it with so much love and rejecting it would only make her worry and I just couldn't risk that.
"Yes, mum I would like some," I said with great enthusiasm entering the kitchen and taking a seat on the chair, Grandma served the food for me with turkey and orange juice; I smiled widely at the food placed on my table as I begin to dig into it, moaning in content at the first bite.
"Grandma this is so good," I said sipping the orange juice.
"I know I made it specially for you, eat up my child and go freshen up and sleep, tomorrow is another day," she said softly patting my head before retiring back to her room, I continue eating my food flushing it down with the orange juice as I munched on my turkey, I was eating happily almost forgetting about what happened earlier until I felt like someone was watching me, I looked around the kitchen but saw no one, looking at the kitchen window I stood up from my chair and hurriedly ambled to it opening the shutters but I saw no one.
I was gradually getting paranoid for no reason.
I closed the shutters and walked back to my seat eating up the remaining food a little too fast, I wash up the plate and leave for my room, entering my room I turned on the switch glad to be back in my room, I quickly freshen up, putting on a sweatshirt and shorts I plop down into my bed, my whole bones relaxing as I snuggled in my bed falling into a deep slumber.
___
I walked Into my room the cold air teasing the hairs on my skin, my room was extremely cold, and the reason for the cold coming from my open window, but I had closed it before leaving, I switch on my light and moved to my window I was captivated by the setting sun that I forgot the main reason for walking over to the window in the first place, the sun cast beautiful shadows over the sky which reflected on my face, I watched the sun till it went down before shutting my window and curtain, I was about to plop down on my bed when I notice a piece of paper taped to my dressing mirror, I scrunched up my face in wonder my eyebrows raised.
What was a paper doing on my mirror? I asked myself as I took slow steps towards it my eyes trained on the mirror that I didn't notice the wooden box on the floor until my legs collided with it.
"Ouch!!!" I cried out in pain as I looked at the wooden box on the floor, picking it up the pungent smell emitting from it has me squeezing my nose, I opened the box to see a dried decaying heart with a sticky note on it which said "Read the note on your mirror"
My whole body went into great shock as I couldn't react at the moment; I walked monotonously to the note on my mirror which read
"I'm coming for you"
And finally, my body reacted as I screamed bloody murder.
