PROLOGUE
Mia stared out the window and wondered how had her life become so bad. She felt so lonely and wished that she had someone she could talk to. Once upon a time she had been happy, her mum had doted on her and she had a stepfather who treated her like his own.
That all changed one day when Mia's mum went out and never returned was like a different person when her mum did not come back one day. Her stepfather changed, it was like he switched to a nasty person. He suddenly hated Mia and blamed her for everything. Nights in the pub were a blessing but then a dread for Mia. Even if the house was immaculate he would still find a reason to shout and hit Mia. Like she were nothing. Her stepfather and her uncle soon found ways to punish Mia and she was trapped. She could not leave, for fear of no money and nowhere to go. Her stepfather hid her car keys until he needed taking somewhere. She was to afraid of what beating would be next if she dared to breath the wrong way, let alone leaving the life she had grown to hate. Mia spent many nights alone in the house that she was imprisoned in.
Chapter One
"Mia" That slurry voice shouted from the bottom of the stairs. Mia froze on the spot. She could not let him find her. She needed to hide. He was back far earlier than normal and it threw Mia into a state of panic. What if they found out she had just taken the car keys and found money in the safe. She would be dead meat. However, it was a risk she was willing to take. Listening to them both talking last night had helped ensure Mia knew the pin of her stepfathers safe. Grabbing her half packed suitcase she pulled open the balcony doors and hesitated for a moment looking at the drop, doubting if she were able to pull it off. The voice was getting louder as he got closer up the stairs. "I know you are in there, you filthy little slut. You better open that door and be ready for me." The door handle rattled, but luckily for Mia it was bolted. Although with her uncles strong weight, she knew that it would only buy her a few more moments to bide her freedom. Throwing down her belongings, she yelped as she lowered herself down from the makeshift bedcover rope she had made that morning. The second her feet touched the ground, she grabbed her suitcase, hurried to her car and threw it all in before starting the engine. Locking all the doors, she nervously took a glance back in the rear view mirror and screamed at the sight of her uncle standing behind her car. He was yelling and looked absolutely furious, but she slammed her foot on the accelerator and the car spluttered as it moved off the driveway. Mia kept driving and driving until she was sure she was far away. Pulling into an almost empty parking lot, she sat back in the seat and took a deep breath. She did not stop the tears flowing from her face. They were happy tears. She was finally free. Free from the years of torture and abuse she had had to put up with since her mother left. They had all blamed Mia for her mothers disappearance but Mia knew her mum would never leave her without a reason. She loved and adored Mia from the moment she had been born. Her stepfather did not care about Mia at all, he was more interested in drinking and taking drugs all the time. On the rare occasion that he was sober, he would make Mia clean and scrub the whole house from top to bottom. He even made her scrub his shoes and didn't seem bothered when she told him how her uncle was abusing her. She had been labelled a liar, a dirty filthy hoare like her mother. Yet, if meals were not prepared and cleaned after to his approval, she was beaten and starved for days afterwards. Often, only being able to go out for groceries or to get her stepfather and uncle more beers. Mia did not have any friends, nobody wanted to waste their time with someone like her. She had nobody to turn too, nobody would believe her anyway. That's why she had had to leave. If she stayed any longer, who knows what would have happened to her. She could have ended up dead and nobody would have noticed or cared. Mia stared back at her reflection in the rear view mirror. The nineteen year old girl, staring back at her looked beyond exhausted. Her long brown hair tied back into a pony tail, it was greasy and matted from not being able to bath as regularly as she had liked. Her wide brown eyes no longer twinkled with the happiness she once knew. She pulled open her purse and counted the money she had stolen from her stepfathers safe. She did not feel any guilt for taking the money, it was hers after all. He just felt he had the right to take it for himself and not provide Mia with anything. Mia decided that she would book herself into a cheap hotel for the night. She grabbed her phone and took out the SIM card. Breaking it in half she threw it out the window before going into the shop. The shop was fairly quiet and Mia nervously walked around piling things into the basket as she did so. She knew she would need supplies as she had no intention of going back home ever again. The further away she got, the better things would be for her. Her uncle and stepfather would be furious with her by now, but they would have to sort their own dinner out from now on. Mia hated them with every ounce of her body. How could they treat a young girl that way, it was horrendous how she had spent night after night crying her heart out, wishing her mum would come back for her, wherever she was. They should have looked after, protected and cared for her. Instead she was left to pick up the pieces every time they tore her down. "Can I help you Miss?" An overweight middle aged woman appeared in front of Mia who realised that she had been staring at the chocolate aisle for longer than intended. "No, I am ok, thanks." Mia mumbled, picking up a handful of chocolate bars and throwing them into the basket before heading for the checkout. It was almost six pm and she was starving and tired. "Excuse me, Is there any hotels around here?" She asked the checkout assistant hastily. The checkout assistant glared at Mia through her thick glasses before shrugging her shoulders. "One just ten minutes away. Wouldn't waste your time though. Place is a wreck. Surprised it's still open, if you ask me." She scowled as she handed Mia her change. Mia smiled politely, picked up her bags and hurried back to her car. She clicked her seatbelt back on and opened the SIM card she had just bought. Sliding it into the new phone, she switched it on and waited for everything to load. She knew that getting rid of her old sim and phone would lessen the chances of her being found by the people she hoped would never cross her path again.
The rain was pelting down so hard, Mia wrapped her coat tighter around her skinny body. Dragging the suitcase from the backseat and reaching for the shopping she had just bought, she locked the car up and made her way to the hotel. It did not look perfect by any means, but it was far better than sleeping in the car. At least she could have a hot bath and a decent night sleep before continuing her journey. The hotel looked old and abandoned but the sign outside the door read open for buiness sl she took her chances.
Pushing the creaky door open, a bell above her head sounded causing a lady at the front desk to turn from the book she was engrossed in. Mia immediately felt uncomfortable as the women eyed her suspiciously. "Hello, can I help you?" She huffed noticing the suitcase Mia was holding in her hand. Mia stood silent for a moment trying to gather her thoughts. "Do you want a room or are you just going to stand there all night?" The woman sighed and rolled her eyes as she stood up from her leather chair and came towards Mia. The woman was wearing a black blazer and knee length skirt along with black slip on shoes. She was around fifty years old and had her hair tied back in a neat pony tail. On her blazer she wore a name tag that Mia noticed said Maria. "Good evening, I was wondering if you have a room for the night, please?." The woman was taken aback by Mia's politeness. She nodded and gestured for her to come on in. "We have a room with en-suite. I will take you to it. Then perhaps you would like to join me for dinner, since it's a quiet night?" The woman smiled warmly at Mia. "My name is Maria. Forgive my frosty welcoming but we don't get many guests here at the moment since, well never mind. It's nice to have you." Mia shook her hand and smiled back wondering what it would be like to have a proper job like this woman had. Your own money and freedom. Nobody to boss you around and demand all the time. "Thanks." Maria nodded as she showed Mia to her room. It was on the second floor and the lift was out of order so the steps were the only way up. Mia did not mind because she was just excited for a bath and a good sleep. Since she had been driving for so long now and felt like she deserved a good rest. "Well I will let you settle in. There is lasagne for dinner if you like that." Maria told her guest kindly. Mia grinned and nodded. The last time she had eaten something decent like that was probably months ago when her stepfather had been nice for a change. He was rarely nice to her, mainly when he had bought a woman home for the night and wanted to impress her. "Maria?" Mia called after the woman. "Yes dear?" Maria smiled. Mia shifted from one foot to the other not sure what to say but then decided against it. "Umm, thanks for your help. You have been very kind to me." Maria nodded and closed the door behind her, leaving Mia to relax for a little while. Mia grabbed a fresh pair of tracksuit bottoms, clean underwear, socks and a jumper. Then she switched on the shower and jumped in. The feel of the hot water on her body was like heaven for her. She let the water cover her entire body before lathering body wash all over her and then washing her long hair. Rinsing it out she stood there for a few moments and then reached for a towel. She wrapped it around her body and switched off the shower. Walking into the bedroom, she sat on the edge of the bed and started to brush her long hair. She forgot how great it felt to be fresh and clean. Drying herself she pulled on her clean clothes and then made her way back down the stairs to the dining hall. Maria was already waiting with two hot steaming plates of lasagne and two big glasses of coco cola. Mia's eyes widened at the sight of it, it smelt delicious and her tummy rumbled loudly in desperation as she made her way towards the table. "I trust you enjoyed your shower." Maria chuckled to which Mia nodded with such enthusiasm. Maria could not help but feel a little sorry for the young girl sitting in front of her, something about her spelt a rough life. "So, what brings you here?" Maria dared to ask as Mia shovelled a forkful of food into her mouth. "I just needed a fresh start." Mia told her, she did not want to go into to much detail. She barely knew the woman despite her kindness so far. "Anywhere in particular?" Maria continued to question her. She knew Mia was not telling her the whole truth but she was starting to feel a little concerned at how nervous and hungry Mia seemed to be. "No, just wherever the road takes me." Mia replied pushing her empty plate away and sipping her drink. She felt full and satisfied from that lovely meal and was grateful to Maria. "Do your parents know where you are?" Maria looked curious and Mia's heart sunk. She did not want to have to explain her situation. What if Maria sent her back there or worse, they came for her. A part of her wanted to get up and run to the car and disappear while the other side of her said it would be fine. Maria did not seem untrustworthy, but then she barely knew her. "Mia, I can smell you're fear and see how nervous you are. I have a friend who can help you, if you are in trouble." Maria grabbed both of her hands and assured her that she could trust her. Mia was uncertain but eventually she dropped her shoulders and told Maria everything that had happened. Maria was shocked upon hearing Mia's story. Who the hell were these people! Her blood was boiling inside and she wanted to rip them apart for causing so much pain and upset to this poor innocent young life. "Mia, everything will be ok. My friends, Fiona and David. They will look after you. I feel that you will fit in perfectly with them. You know, you're a rare kind of special .. well anyway, please let me introduce you to them first thing tomorrow morning." Maria said. Mia instantly agreed and surprisingly she felt a lot better for having let it all out. Finally someone who believed her and wanted to help. But, she could not help but wonder what Maria meant when she said Mia was a rare kind of special. That night Mia fell right to sleep for the first time in ages. No nightmares or anyone trying to break into her room.
Jacob stared out of the window as his driver pulled up to the packhouse. He was bored, fed up and most of all tired of all these responsibilities. If only his father had left the alpha position to his brother, Kane instead. He was stronger, had his mate by his side and everyone liked and respected Kane. The only reason Jacob had been handed down the reins of the alpha status was because he was the first born son to his parents, Alpha Gerald and Luna Velma. Jacob loved the power he had but hated the responsibility of dealing with everything by himself.
Of course his Beta Nigel was by his side but he did not have a luna. That was the last thing he had wanted. Sleeping with women and getting rid of them the next morning had always made him happy. He did not want to be tied to one woman when he could have as many as he desired. They literally threw themselves at him as it was, although Jacob was not stupid. He knew it was because they wanted the Luna title for themselves. Jacob was tall, muscular with a tan. His thick black hair, big brown eyes and dashing smile made any girl weak at the knees. Jacobs parents were adamant that he would meet his mate sooner or later but now at the age of 22 years old, it still had not happened. Jacob was one of the strongest in the pack, he trained from a young age and his wolf was feared within the pack and surrounding packs. Together him and his pack were one of the strongest in the world. They kept away from the human world and that's how they preferred it. "Jacob, where have you been?" Alpha Derek glared at his son the moment that Jacob stepped into the packhouse. He did not need to ask because he could smell the stench of the shewolf a over him. He did not approve of his son being with all these girls, he should be saving himself for the one the moon goddess would have chose for him. "That Abigail again?" Alpha Derek snarled as he spat her name out in such disgust. Neither him or his Luna liked Abigail very much, she was to demanding and spoilt brat material. No way she would ever be a Luna with the attitude she had. Alpha Derek watched his son smirk at the mention of her name. Abigail was an unmated she wolf that had been ridiculously spoilt by her Beta father. He had five sons before finally his wife gave birth to a girl and she was spoilt from day one. They were also members of the neighbouring pack and although there was not any amniosity between the two packs, Alpha Derek was adamant his son would not be mates with such a girl. They were secretly happy when it turned out she was not his fated mate. Jacob, on the other hand did not care in the slightest. He was just happy to sleep with her because she did everything he wanted and she satisfied him better than the other she wolf she had been with. He knew she would never be Luna material no matter how much she tried to convince him otherwise. "Go and get showered and changed before your mother finds out where you have been." Alpha Derek insisted. Jacob knew better than to argue with his father and the last thing he wanted to do was upset his mother. "You are an alpha, you should act like one." His father grumbled as Jacob walked off. "Well then, father, perhaps you should put Kane up for the job because he is clearly more able and willing than me." Jacob turned to face his father angrily. Kane, who had just come through the door with his mate, Cherry, paused at the sight of them in the hallway. He looked from his father to his brother in surprise. He had no idea what was going on, but it did not look good. "Something I should know?" He questioned with raised eyebrows. His mate stood beside him silently and twitched her nose. "Your dear brother here, seems to think that Abigail is more important than pack duties. Perhaps if he spent more time finding his mate rather than sleeping with anyone, then we would not have this issue." Alpha Derek snapped not taking his eyes off his son who glared back. It was taking up a lot of Jacob's strength not to allow his wolf forward. He had had enough of being told what to do. He was the alpha now so everyone should be bowing to him, not dictating how he should live his life. Kane, sensing his brother's fury placed an arm around his shoulders and walked off with him, away from their father. "Let's go and chat bro over a beer." Kane said not taking no for an answer. Jacob growled as he was led away. "He needs to find his mate and soon!" Alpha Derek muttered under his breath as he headed back to find his own Luna. He was beginning to regret ever standing down as alpha of the pack. Jacob was not taking it as seriously as he should be. Perhaps he was right, Kane would be a much better fit for the job. Jacob may be the oldest, but he did not seem to have grown up in his head. "My parents have to head back to town tomorrow. There's a girl staying at their friend's hotel who is having a few problems. Maria thinks she might have wolf blood in her." Cherry told Alpha Derek. He snorted, another she-wolf that his son would no doubt try to get his claws into. "Maybe that son of mine will grow up one day." He shook his head in disbelief and disappeared out of the door.
