Her Kiss, My Ruin

Author: : Hansiain Finley-moise
Genre: Romance
The annual Apex Innovations retreat was a testament to my success, a celebration of crushing goals, with my beautiful wife, Sarah, by my side – the ultimate power couple. But the celebratory mood shattered when a childish game of 'Truth or Dare' brought my deepest insecurity to the surface, revealing Sarah' s unsettling focus on Alex, her "brother-like" childhood friend. My blood ran cold as Sarah, with a brilliant smile meant for him, publicly offered to kiss Alex, dismissing my quiet plea to sit down with chilling disdain. She then slapped me in front of my employees, defended him, and sealed her betrayal with a long, deliberate kiss that crumbled ten years of marriage into ash. How could she humiliate me so utterly, so casually, for a man I suspected she' d been seeing for years-a suspicion she' d always gaslit me into believing was just my unreasonable jealousy? The final, gut-wrenching blow came not in that moment, but hours later: discovering pharmacy receipts for birth control pills, covering the five years I believed I was infertile, forcing her to endure my "failure," all while she knowingly carried Alex' s baby. In that instant, my world shattered, and I knew-I wouldn't just walk away; I would dismantle everything we built, and she would stand alone in the wreckage.

Chapter 1

The fire in the grand stone fireplace of the mountain resort crackled, casting a warm, flickering glow across the faces of my employees. It was the annual Apex Innovations company retreat, a celebration of another year of crushing our goals, and I felt a deep sense of pride swell in my chest. I glanced at my wife, Sarah, seated beside me, her hand resting lightly on my thigh. She was beautiful, a celebrated interior designer whose success mirrored my own in the tech world. We were the power couple, the ones everyone looked up to.

Our top sales manager, a boisterous guy named Kevin, stood up, raising his glass of beer. "Alright, everyone! Enough shop talk. We work hard, so we gotta play hard, right? I say we play a classic. Truth or Dare!"

A wave of groans and cheers went through the room. It was a silly, juvenile game, but the mood was light, and everyone was a few drinks in. I chuckled and squeezed Sarah's hand.

"What do you think?" I murmured to her.

Her eyes, however, weren't on me. They were fixed across the room. I followed her gaze and my smile tightened. She was looking at Alex Peterson. Her childhood friend. A struggling musician she'd insisted on inviting, claiming he was "like a brother" and needed a break from his depressing city apartment. I never liked him. He had an air of entitlement, a way of looking at Sarah that always set my teeth on edge. Right now, he was watching her with a hopeful, almost pleading expression. Sarah' s focus on him was intense, a silent conversation passing between them that I was not a part of. A familiar, cold knot of unease formed in my stomach.

The game started innocently enough. Someone had to sing their college fight song, another had to reveal their most embarrassing moment at work. Then, the bottle spun and landed on a quiet programmer named Chloe.

Kevin grinned. "Chloe! Truth or Dare?"

She blushed. "Truth."

"Is it true you have a crush on someone in this room?"

Chloe' s face turned a shade of crimson I hadn't thought possible. She mumbled something into her hands.

It was Alex who spoke up, his voice smooth and a little too loud. "Come on, Kevin, don't put her on the spot. Let' s make it a dare instead. A fun one." He then looked directly at Chloe. "I dare you to kiss the most handsome guy in the room to break the ice."

The room went quiet for a second before erupting in laughter and catcalls. It was a deliberately provocative suggestion, designed to create chaos. Chloe looked like she wanted the floor to swallow her whole. She shook her head, unable to speak.

Then Sarah moved. She took her hand off my leg and stood up, her voice ringing out with a cheerful, helpful tone that made my blood run cold. "Oh, for goodness sake, you're all putting the poor girl on the spot. It's just a silly game." She turned to Alex, a brilliant smile on her face. "Look, Alex is a good sport. I'll help him out. It's just a kiss, right? To get the game moving."

My entire body went rigid. The air left my lungs. The laughter in the room faltered as all eyes turned to me, then to her. This wasn't about helping Chloe. This was something else entirely. It was an announcement. A performance.

I reached out and gently touched her arm, my voice low, meant only for her. "Sarah, don't. Sit down."

The noise, the fire, the faces of my employees-it all faded into a dull roar in my ears. All I could see was her, standing there, ready to publicly humiliate me for him.

Chapter 2

Sarah pulled her arm away from my touch, her smile never wavering, but her eyes, when they flicked to me, were cold and dismissive.

"Oh, Mark, don't be such a spoilsport," she said, her voice loud enough for everyone to hear. "It's just a game. Don't be so dramatic."

The words hit me, each one a calculated jab. She was painting me as the overbearing, insecure husband. The crowd was silent now, the fun atmosphere completely gone, replaced by a thick, uncomfortable tension.

I stood up, my own voice tight and low, a clear warning. "Sarah. I'm telling you, right now. Don't do it."

I set my boundary. I drew the line in the sand. I was her husband. This was my company. These were my employees. I was giving her a final chance to choose me, to choose our dignity.

Alex, seeing his opportunity, put on a mask of innocent confusion. He looked at Sarah with wide, pleading eyes. "Sarah, it's okay, really. You don't have to. I don't want to cause any trouble between you and Mark." His words were a masterpiece of manipulation, making him seem like the victim while pushing her to defy me. He was positioning himself as the one she needed to protect.

My control snapped. The rage that had been coiling in my gut for years, every time I saw him look at her, every time she mentioned his name, finally broke free. I pointed a shaking finger at him.

"You shut your mouth," I snarled, my voice raw. "You worthless leech. You know exactly what you're doing."

Before I could say another word, a sharp, stinging pain exploded on my cheek. Sarah had slapped me. Hard. The sound echoed in the silent room. I stumbled back a step, stunned, the imprint of her hand burning on my skin. It wasn't just a slap, it was a public execution of my authority, my marriage, my entire world.

I stared at her, my heart shattering into a million pieces. She didn't even look at me. She didn't spare a single glance for the husband she had just assaulted in front of his entire company.

Instead, she immediately turned to Alex, her expression melting into one of tender concern. "Are you okay?" she asked him, her hand reaching out to touch his arm gently, as if he were the one who had been hurt. She then looked back at the stunned crowd. "I'm so sorry, everyone. Mark is just... he's been under a lot of stress."

She was defending Alex. She was making excuses for me, as if I were a child having a tantrum. The humiliation was absolute, a crushing weight that stole my breath.

Then, as I stood there, frozen in disbelief and pain, she did the unthinkable. She leaned in, cupped Alex's face in her hands, and kissed him. It wasn't a quick, playful peck. It was a long, deliberate kiss, right there in front of me, in front of everyone. The room was deathly quiet. I could see the shock on my employees' faces, the pity, the second-hand embarrassment.

In that one kiss, ten years of marriage turned to ash.
