Her Ex, His Redemption

Author: : Cun Li
Genre: Romance
I was the rock of InnovateATX, Bella's husband, the tech visionary who' d put his own startup on hold to support her dream. Our Austin home, a life I helped design, was where I genuinely believed our future lay, despite the secret pact I' d made years ago with venture capitalist Olivia Hayes to neutralize Victor Cole, the man connected to my family' s ruin. Then, Bella handed me divorce papers, declaring, "It was always him," nodding towards Victor, her resurrected college sweetheart. Weeks blurred into public accusations – Bella siding with Victor, dismissing me as "moping" after a staged office "accident"- and private indignities, as she signed my resignation without a glance, calling my efforts a "drag." She watched me clear out our home, deeming our shared memories "sentimental junk," and, as I stumbled through the wreckage of my life, coldly stated, "I don' t love you anymore." Just when I thought it couldn't get worse, a truck swerved into my car, leaving me mangled and bleeding on a Hill Country highway. Through my blurring vision, all I could see was Bella, rushing past my wreck to Victor' s less damaged Tesla, cradling him, utterly oblivious to me. In that moment, the final, agonizing truth slammed into me: she truly felt nothing for me, the man she married, the man who had loved her. The raw realization was more painful than any shattered bone. Desperate, I fumbled for my phone and choked out Olivia' s name. Her voice cut through the chaos, calm and cutting: "They can make you disappear, Ethan. Officially. A clean slate. A new life. If you want it." Watching Bella's betrayal unfold, I whispered, "Yes. Do it." As darkness consumed me, my old life ended, and a new one, colder, sharper, was born from the ashes.

Introduction

I was the rock of InnovateATX, Bella's husband, the tech visionary who' d put his own startup on hold to support her dream.

Our Austin home, a life I helped design, was where I genuinely believed our future lay, despite the secret pact I' d made years ago with venture capitalist Olivia Hayes to neutralize Victor Cole, the man connected to my family' s ruin.

Then, Bella handed me divorce papers, declaring, "It was always him," nodding towards Victor, her resurrected college sweetheart.

Weeks blurred into public accusations – Bella siding with Victor, dismissing me as "moping" after a staged office "accident"- and private indignities, as she signed my resignation without a glance, calling my efforts a "drag."

She watched me clear out our home, deeming our shared memories "sentimental junk," and, as I stumbled through the wreckage of my life, coldly stated, "I don' t love you anymore."

Just when I thought it couldn't get worse, a truck swerved into my car, leaving me mangled and bleeding on a Hill Country highway.

A new life. If you want it."

Watching Bella's betrayal unfold, I whispered, "Yes. Do it."

As darkness consumed me, my old life ended, and a new one, colder, sharper, was born from the ashes.

Chapter 1

Olivia Hayes tapped a manicured nail on the glossy photograph.

"So, Ethan. You see it now. Bella and Victor Cole."

Her Austin office, high up, overlooked the city, but Ethan Miller only saw the picture.

Bella, his wife, laughing with Victor. Too close.

"This is what we talked about, Ethan. The pact."

Olivia' s voice was calm, like always. She was a venture capitalist, used to high stakes.

"He ruined your parents. He hurt my family's interests. You get close to Bella, steer her clear, gather what you can on him. I fund your startup. Principia. Remember?"

Ethan nodded, his throat tight.

He remembered. It was why he' d pursued Bella Rossi, CEO of InnovateATX, three years ago.

A strategic move.

Then he' d fallen in love with her. For real.

"She wants a divorce," Ethan said, his voice flat.

The words hung in the expensive air.

Olivia raised an eyebrow.

"Already? Victor works fast."

She leaned back in her leather chair.

"This makes things... messier. Or cleaner, depending on how you play it."

Ethan looked at the photo again.

Bella, his Bella. Her smile, usually for him, now for Victor.

A cold fist clenched in his gut.

The world tilted. He' d put his own dreams on hold for her, for InnovateATX. Been her rock.

For this.

"I'll sign the papers," Ethan said. His voice was surprisingly steady.

"Give her the divorce."

Olivia studied him.

"And Victor? Our deal still stands. Neutralize him."

A beat of silence.

"You know, Ethan," Olivia said, a strange glint in her eye. "My ex, Mark? He also cheated. With a woman Victor introduced him to. Small world, huh?"

She almost smiled.

"Maybe we should team up on a different kind of venture. Revenge. Could be very satisfying."

Ethan didn' t smile back.

He just felt empty.

"I need to go home."

He drove back to the house he shared with Bella.

The house he' d helped design.

He cooked dinner. Her favorite. Grilled salmon, asparagus.

He set the table for two.

Habit. Or hope. He wasn' t sure which.

He waited.

The food got cold.

Nine o'clock. Ten. Eleven.

He texted Kevin Chen, Bella' s executive assistant.

"Is Bella still at the office?"

Kevin replied quickly. "No, Mr. Miller. She left hours ago. With Mr. Cole."

Kevin added, "They had a dinner reservation at Uchi."

Expensive. Romantic.

Ethan looked at the untouched plates.

He scraped the salmon and asparagus into the trash.

The sound was final.

He went to the guest room. He' d been sleeping there for a week, since Bella first grew distant.

Bella didn' t come home that night.

The next morning, she walked in as Ethan was making coffee.

She looked tired but... glowing.

"Morning," she said, a little too brightly.

"Rough night?" Ethan asked, his voice neutral. He handed her a mug. Black, two sugars. The way she liked it.

Or used to.

Bella took the coffee, her fingers brushing his.

She hesitated, looking at him.

He knew what was coming. He' d known since he saw the photos.

"Ethan," she began, her voice soft. "We need to talk."

She placed a folder on the kitchen island.

Divorce papers.

"I want to be with Victor," she said, not meeting his eyes. "He' s back. We reconnected. It' s... it was always him, Ethan."

He remembered the stories. Victor Cole. Her college sweetheart from UT Austin. Intense. Unforgettable, apparently.

The man who' d indirectly destroyed Ethan' s family through a Ponzi scheme connection.

The man Olivia Hayes wanted taken down.

"I know this is sudden," Bella continued, misreading his silence.

"We can take a month. Figure things out. I' ll be generous with the settlement. You deserve that."

She thought he was shocked. Hurt.

He was. But something else too. A strange clarity.

Ethan picked up a pen.

He signed the papers.

His signature, clear and firm.

Bella stared.

"Ethan?"

He pulled out his phone.

He called Olivia.

"Olivia. It's done. She served the papers. I signed."

A pause.

"Yeah. The one-month countdown starts now. Get everything ready for Denver. Principia."

He hung up.

He looked at Bella. Her beautiful, confused face.

"Some things, Bella," he said quietly, "you just have to let go."

A weight lifted from his chest.

It felt like breathing again.

He went to his laptop.

He set a calendar reminder.

"New Life: 30 Days."

Austin was about to be in his rearview mirror.

Or so he thought.

Chapter 2

Ethan spent the next week at InnovateATX, tying up loose ends.

He was officially an advisor, unofficially the tech backbone.

He' d built half their core systems.

He packed his personal items from the small office Bella had given him.

It felt strange, dismantling a part of his life.

On Wednesday, he was in the break room, getting water, when Victor Cole walked in.

Victor, all charm and expensive, casual Austin tech-bro attire.

"Ethan, right?" Victor said, extending a hand. "Bella's told me so much about you."

His smile didn't reach his eyes.

"Heard you're a whiz with code. Shame you couldn't make your own startup fly."

A subtle dig. Ethan had put his startup, Principia, on hold for Bella.

Ethan knew Victor was back.

He' d seen them at a company mixer last week, Bella laughing, Victor' s arm around her.

Public. Definite.

A stake through the heart he hadn' t realized was still beating for her.

It was almost over.

The divorce papers were filed. Thirty days.

He just had to get through it.

"Victor," Ethan said, his voice even. He didn't take the offered hand.

"Good to see you're settling in."

Victor' s smile tightened.

"Oh, I'm more than settled. Bella' s been... very welcoming."

He leaned against the counter.

"She' s busy right now, by the way. Tied up. But if you need to tell her something, I can pass it on."

The insinuation was clear.

Ethan just nodded.

"I'm just finishing up here. Handing off my projects."

He wasn't going to play Victor' s games.

Then Victor did something odd.

He reached for the coffee pot, a full cup already in his other hand.

He "stumbled," sloshing hot coffee down his own expensive shirt.

"Damn it!" Victor yelped, jumping back.

He looked at Ethan, his face a mask of pain and surprise.

"What the hell, Miller? Did you trip me?"

Bella rushed in, drawn by the commotion.

Kevin Chen was right behind her.

"Victor! Are you okay?" Bella cried, rushing to Victor's side.

She glared at Ethan.

"Ethan! What did you do?"

No questions. Just accusation.

Ethan felt a flicker of the old pain.

Bella, always quick to defend, to assume the worst of him lately.

He pushed it down.

"He spilled coffee on himself, Bella."

Victor clutched his chest, wincing.

"I don't know what happened. One minute I was getting coffee, the next... Ethan was right there."

He looked at Bella, all wounded innocence.

"Maybe it was an accident. I'm sure he didn't mean it."

The perfect victim. It only made Bella angrier at Ethan.

"An accident?" Bella snapped, her eyes blazing at Ethan.

"You've been moping around here for days! Are you trying to cause trouble because I'm happy?"

Her voice was sharp, cutting.

"Just get your things and go, Ethan! Don't come back until you've figured out how to act like an adult!"

Ethan looked at her.

At Victor, smirking behind Bella' s shoulder.

It was almost funny.

The last thread connecting him to Bella, to this life, just snapped.

He felt... nothing.

Just a cold, clear understanding.

It was truly over.
