Chapter 1 A Difficult Life

Jenifer Carlson stared at her image in the cracked bathroom mirror, reflecting on the person she had become. Looking at her reflection, she noticed a weary 28-year-old woman with under-eye dark circles, a stark contrast to her once energetic and animated demeanor. She splashed cold water on her face, trying to rid herself of the haunting memories of her life.

"Kain," she croaked, her voice rough from sleep deprivation, shouted out, "Are you awake?"

Kain Light grunted from another room, saying, "Yes, I'm awake." "What will we be having for breakfast?"

Jenifer breathed heavily and entered the compact kitchen. The walls had peeling paint, while the linoleum floor showed stains and signs of wear. She searched through the mostly vacant pantry and discovered a can of beans.

"Beans once more?" Kain chuckled as he stumbled into the kitchen, his eyes tired and bloodshot after a night of excessive drinking.

"It's the only thing we got," Jenifer whispered as she opened the can and emptied it into a pot. I can attempt to purchase additional groceries once I finish work.

Kain snorted. "Yeah, with what money? You think that pitiful job of yours is going to cover anything?"

Jenifer bit her lip and turned her back to him, stirring the beans on the stove. She knew better than to argue. Her job as a waitress at the local diner barely paid enough to cover rent, let alone groceries.

"She quietly commented that we could have more money if gambling and drinking were stopped.

"Can you repeat that?" The sound of Kain's voice was abrupt, causing Jenifer to react with a startled movement.

"Absolutely nothing," she quickly replied. "I'll attempt to work an additional shift, just to make ends meet."

Kain seized her arm and twisted her to meet his gaze. How dare you speak disrespectfully to me, Jenifer. "I'm allowing you to stay here out of luck."

Jenifer nodded, her eyes filling with tears. I understand, Kain. I apologize."

He pushed her away, causing her to trip and fall back into the counter. He smirked, saying, "That's an improvement." "Quickly finish cooking those beans now. I need to meet up with the group shortly.

She swiftly cooked the beans, placing a dish in front of Kain and observing as he devoured them eagerly. She kept a small portion for her, feeling both hungry and anxious in her stomach.

"Jenifer," Kain spoke while eating, "I require a favor from you."

"She asked cautiously, "What is that?"

"I require you to conceal this money," he stated as he took out a stack of bills from his pocket. The men must not be aware that I possess it. "They are becoming wary."

Jenifer's heart skipped a beat. "Kain, where did you get that money?"

He glared at her. "Don't ask questions. Just do as I say."

She nodded, taking the money and tucking it into her apron pocket. "Okay. I'll find a place."

Kain finished his meal and stood up, grabbing his jacket. "Good. And remember, if you screw this up, there will be consequences."

Jenifer observed his departure, hearing the door slam closed as he left. She released an unsteady exhale and retrieved the money from her pocket, gazing at it. It was the largest amount of money she had ever seen in one location, and she couldn't help but question how Kain obtained it.

Jenifer spent the day working her shift at the diner, which seemed to last forever. The clients were impolite, the gratuities were limited, and she felt pain in her feet from standing. Despite having no other option, she continued to wear a smile on her face.

"Hey, Jen," Lisa, one of her colleagues, said during a short pause. "Are you alright? You appear even more spaced out than you typically do.

Jenifer managed to smile. "I'm doing well, just feeling weary."

"I'm here if you need someone to talk to," Lisa said, offering a sympathetic expression.

"Well, if you need to talk, I'm here," Lisa said, giving her a sympathetic look.

"Thanks, Lisa. I appreciate it," Jenifer replied, though she knew she couldn't share the truth about her life. It was too dangerous.

After her shift, Jenifer walked home, clutching the money in her apron pocket. The streets were dark and empty, and she hurried, feeling the weight of the cash like a leaden burden.

Upon arrival at the apartment, she promptly stashed the money in a loose floorboard beneath the bed, praying Kain wouldn't discover it and squander it.

While lying in bed that night, thoughts of her mother consumed her mind. The only valuable possession she owned was the necklace left to her by her mother. She extended her hand to grab it, sensing the sleek, chilly metal touching her skin.

"Mother," she murmured, tears flowing down her cheeks, "I desire your presence." "I am unsure how much more I can continue with this."

The following day, Kain's shouting abruptly woke Jenifer up. Hey Jenifer!

"Jenifer! Get out here, now!" Kain's voice roared through the thin walls of their apartment.

Jenifer stumbled out of bed, her heart racing. She rushed into the living room, where Kain stood, his face twisted with anger. "What is it, Kain? What's wrong?"

"What's wrong?" he spat, grabbing her wrist painfully. "What's wrong is that I can't find the money I told you to hide!"

"I hid it, just like you asked," Jenifer said, wincing as his grip tightened. "It's safe, I promise."

"Safe? Where?" Kain demanded, shaking her. "Tell me now!"

"It's under the floorboard, beneath the bed," Jenifer replied quickly, hoping to calm him down. "I thought it would be the safest place."

Kain released her with a shove and stormed into the bedroom. Jenifer followed, her heart pounding. She watched as he tore up the floorboard and grabbed the money, counting it rapidly.

"You're lucky it's all here," he muttered, stuffing the cash back into his pocket. "If any of it had been missing..."

"It wasn't," Jenifer said softly, trying to keep her voice steady. "I did exactly what you told me."

Kain glared at her. "Just stay out of my way today. I have important business to take care of."

Jenifer nodded, feeling a mix of relief and dread. "Okay, Kain. I'll stay out of your way."

He took his jacket and went towards the door. "And do not consider exiting this flat. I don't want you messing anything up.

After he departed, Jenifer collapsed to the ground, tears cascading down her cheeks. She found herself stuck, without any escape route. However, she refused to quit. She needed to figure out a way to stay alive.

Jenifer's fingers shook as they grasped the fragile pendant hanging on her neck. The necklace's cool metal gave off an unfamiliar warmth, making her feel a sensation she had never experienced. Suddenly, the necklace illuminated as brilliantly as the sun, a first occurrence.

At the other side of the city another necklace, similar the hers glowed and a young lady looked out the window as she touched her necklace. She muttered one word "Jennifer."

Chapter 2 The Beginning of the End

The day seemed to stretch on forever, with every minute dragging by slowly. Jenifer kept herself busy cleaning the apartment to distract her mind. She cleaned the floors, cleaned the dishes, and organized the mess. Doing anything to distract herself from facing the despair of her circumstances.

Later in the afternoon, a knock was heard at the door. Jenifer became motionless, feeling her heart beat rapidly. Who might that be? She carefully cracked open the door, looking out cautiously.

Is that you, Jenifer? A familiar voice said, "It's Lisa."

Jenifer swiftly widened the door. Lisa,

Hey there! Why are you here?

Lisa entered the small apartment, glancing around. "I was concerned about your well-being. You appeared very different yesterday, so when you missed your shift today, I realized there was a problem.

Jenifer experienced a surge of thankfulness. "Thanks for showing up, but this isn't the place for you." "It's dangerous."

"Not safe?" Lisa frowned. "What's going on, Jen? You can tell me."

Jenifer hesitated, then sighed. "It's Kain. He's... he's dangerous. He gets involved in things he shouldn't, and he takes it out on me."

Lisa's eyes widened. "Jenifer, you can't stay here. You need to get out."

"Jenifer's voice trembled as she said, "I cannot." I have no place to go. If I go away, he will track me down. "You are unaware of his potential."

"Jen, you cannot continue living in this way," Lisa urgently exclaimed. "You are worthy of something better. You should be kept safe.

Before Jenifer had a chance to reply, the door suddenly swung open and Kain entered, his face red with rage. "What in the world is happening here?"

Lisa took a step back, her eyes filled with fright. "I had only..." I was just making sure Jen was okay.

Kain's eyes narrowed. "And who the hell are you to be checking on her? Get out, now."

Lisa glanced at Jenifer, her expression pleading. "Jen, come with me. Please."

Jenifer shook her head, tears welling up in her eyes. "I can't, Lisa. I'm sorry."

Kain grabbed Lisa's arm and shoved her towards the door. "I said, get out!"

Lisa stumbled but caught herself, turning back one last time. "Jenifer, please. You don't have to do this."

Jenifer looked away, unable to meet her friend's eyes. "Just go, Lisa. I'll be fine."

Lisa hesitated, then walked out, the door closing behind her. Kain turned to Jenifer, his expression dark. "What did I tell you about bringing people here?"

"I didn't bring her," Jenifer said quickly. "She came on her own. I told her to leave."

"Shut up!" he shouted, slamming his fist into the wall. The plaster cracked under the force. "You're lying to me. You think you can just do whatever you want?"

"I'm not lying," Jenifer whispered, tears streaming down her face. "Please, just calm down."

"Don't tell me to calm down!" Kain roared, stepping towards her. "You don't get to tell me anything. You're nothing without me. Do you understand that?"

Jenifer nodded, her body trembling. "Yes, Kain. I understand."

He grabbed her by the shoulders, shaking her roughly. "You better. Now, where's the rest of the money?"

"That's all of it," Jenifer said, her voice barely audible. "I swear."

Kain released her with a shove. "I don't believe you. You're hiding something. And I'm going to find out what it is."

He stormed into the bedroom, tearing through drawers and closets, and throwing clothes and belongings everywhere. Jenifer stood in the doorway, her heart pounding.

"Kain, please," she begged. "There isn't any more money. I gave you everything."

He ignored her, ripping open the mattress and kicking over the nightstand. "Liar!" he shouted. "You're lying to me!"

Jenifer stepped back, her thoughts moving quickly. She needed to leave this place. She could no longer continue living in this manner. She pivoted and dashed towards the entrance, forcefully pulling it ajar and racing along the corridor.

"Come back here!" She heard Kain's voice reverberating behind her.

She continued. She had difficulty breathing in irregular gasps as she ran down the stairs. Suddenly, she emerged on the street, frantically seeking a place to hide.

"Hello, Jenifer!" Kain's voice had come closer.

She promptly dashed into a narrow hallway, pressing herself against the wall, trying to make herself smaller. His loud footsteps reverberated on the pavement, getting closer and closer.

He shouted, "Where are you?" "I can see through your efforts to conceal yourself from me!"

Jenifer ceased to breathe, sensing her heart thumping in her chest. She had to devise a strategy to escape, a means to flee.

Jenifer stopped breathing, feeling her heart pound in her chest. She needed to come up with a plan, a way to get away. She noticed a fire escape ladder only a short distance away. Taking a deep breath, she dashed towards it, seizing the bottom rung and hoisting herself up.

Kain turned the corner right at the moment she vanished off the edge. "Do you believe you can escape me?" he angrily shouted. "I will locate you, Jenifer!"

She ascended quickly, her grip faltering on the corroded metal. Upon reaching the rooftop, she scanned the area for an alternate route to descend. There was a close by building with a slim space separating them. If she were able to leap over...

"Hey, Jenifer!" Kain's head appeared above the rooftop edge. "Come back here!"

Kain swore, searching for an alternative route to track her down. Jenifer didn't delay in observing his actions. Running on the rooftop, she searched for a route to descend. She saw a ladder in the distance and quickly made her way towards it.

While descending, she could hear Kain yelling in her direction. "Jenifer, you cannot avoid being found by me!" I will locate you, and once I do, you'll hope you are deceased!

Upon reaching the ground, she started running once more, weaving through alleys and side streets, aiming to create as much space between them as she could. She was unsure of her destination but determined to keep moving.

As she rounded a bend, she caught sight of a cluster of men lurking in the shadows. She felt a sinking in her heart as realization set in. These were the men who Kain had taken from. They immediately noticed her.

"Look, there she is!" one of them yelled.

Jenifer felt a chill in her blood. She attempted to flee, but it was already too delayed. She heard a gunshot and then experienced a searing sensation in her side. She tripped, collapsing onto the ground, her sight becoming hazy.

"Please," she panted, holding onto her side. "Do not..."

The men encircled her, their expressions stern and unyielding. One of them coldly stated, "This is the result of crossing us."

Jenifer's sight faded, her body becoming devoid of feeling. Closing her eyes, she grasped the necklace her mother had gifted her, feeling the cool metal against her skin as she passed away. However, at that moment she wakes up and realizes she is in a luxurious room.

"What the heck," said Jennifer.

Chapter 3 New Beginnings

Jenifer woke up and was instantly surprised by the unfamiliar place around her. The room was lavish, featuring tall ceilings and sumptuous décor. She sat upright, experiencing a peculiar light-headed sensation.

"Where am I?" she quietly uttered, scanning the area with bewilderment.

Her attention was drawn to a mirror on the opposite side of the room. She staggered closer to it and exclaimed. The reflection she saw was not her own. Tall, dark hair, captivating blue eyes, and an unfamiliar face.

"Oh my God," she whispered. "I am not this."

The entrance to the chamber opened, and a maid walked in, holding a tray with breakfast.

"Miss Isabella, good morning," the maid greeted with a cheerful tone. "After breakfast, your father wishes to meet you in his office."

Jenifer's thoughts were racing. Isabella, are you there? Who was Isabella characterized as? She nodded slowly, attempting to restrain her rising panic.

She was able to express her gratitude by saying, "Thank you."

After the maid departed, Jenifer collapsed onto the bed with her heart racing. She went to grab the necklace she had on at the time of her death. It remained present, emitting a dim light.

She murmured while holding onto the pendant, asking, "What is taking place with me?"

Jennifer desperate to know whose body she was in searched the room for any information that would shed light on the mystery lady's body she knew inhabited. She opened a drawer next to the bed and found a diary, a purse, and an ID card. She picked up the ID card and read the name of the owner.

"Isabella Beckett, 21-year-old graduate, uh", Jennifer said to herself as she picked up the diary and opened it, she found out Isabella is the only daughter of Jonathan Beckett a billionaire and CEO of the biggest company in New York "Beckett conglomerate". She grew up in the lap of luxury but always yearned for a life beyond the corporate world. She was a talented artist based on the drawings Jennifer saw on her desk.

The maid's knock on the door startled Jennifer as she hid behind her for no reason. "Your father would like to see you in his study ma'am."

Jennifer replied, "I'm on my way." She said as she hurriedly got dressed to meet her supposedly billionaire of a father.

Jenifer's head hurt as she couldn't make sense of what had happened. For some reason, she has magically survived her death by switching bodies with a girl named Isabella, and by the look of the mansion she found herself in, it was clear the girl was rich. She descended the grand staircase of the Beckett mansion, trying to steady her nerves. She had to play along until she could figure out what was going on.

She asked a maid for directions "Ehm, miss can you direct me to Mr. Jonathan's study."

The maid was confused "You mean, your father?"

"Of course, my.........uhm father's study," Jennifer said trying her best to sound convincing.

She knocked on the door of the billionaire Jonathan Beckett's study and entered when she heard his voice.

"Isabella, come in," Jonathan said, looking up from his desk. He was a tall, imposing man with a commanding presence. "We need to discuss your responsibilities in the company."

"Yes, Father," Jenifer replied, trying to mimic what she thought Isabella's demeanor might be.

Jonathan's eyes narrowed slightly. "You seem different today. Is everything alright?"

Jenifer forced a smile. "Just a bit tired, that's all."

Jonathan nodded. "Very well. We have a meeting with the Romano family later this week. You must make a good impression."

"Of, course......uhm father," Jennifer said as she stood up to leave.

Jonathan raised an eyebrow "Father, since when did you speak with such a polite tongue" he said with a slight chuckle "I will need that attitude at the meeting later today, okay."

Jenifer only nodded in response and left her father's study, she nearly collided with a tall, handsome man in the hallway. He looked at her with a mix of curiosity and contempt.

"Watch where you're going, Isabella," he said coldly.

"Sorry," Jenifer muttered, recognizing him from the brief memories she had absorbed. This was James Beckett, Isabella's older brother and Jonathan's arrogant son.

James studied her for a moment. "You seem... off. What's wrong with you?"

Jenifer forced a laugh. "Just tired, uhm.......James. No need to worry."

He shrugged. "Whatever. Just don't embarrass us in front of the Romanos today."

Jenifer spent the morning trying to piece together Isabella's life. She explored the mansion, learning about the Beckett family's wealth and influence. She found Isabella's phone and scrolled through her messages, trying to get a sense of her relationships and responsibilities.

She was interrupted by a knock on the door. It was the maid again.

"Miss Isabella, your breakfast is ready. You need to to eat."

Jenifer nodded, taking a deep breath. "Thank you."

Jenifer did not go down for her breakfast because she was scared to be alone with strangers who thought she was Isabella, her mind racing. She needed to find out what had happened to the real Isabella and how she had ended up in her body.

She locked herself in Isabella's room and began searching through her belongings. She picked up the diary hidden in the back of a drawer.

"June 10th," she read aloud. "I've been having strange dreams lately. Dreams of another life, another person. It's like I'm living someone else's memories."

Jenifer's heart skipped a beat. Could Isabella have been aware of her?

Jennifer continued reading the dairy and she read a conversation Isabella wrote down, it was her interaction with a woman named Madam Serena, which drew her attention the most

"Madame Serena, I need to know more about this necklace," Jenifer said, holding up the diary as she read out what Isabella wrote down.

The woman Madame Serena replied to Isabella in the conversation. "It is an artifact of great power, meant to bridge souls. Both you and the other person."

Jenifer continued reading as Isabella asked Madam Serena, "But why? How did this happen?"

Madame Serena replied. "Sometimes, powerful objects like these choose their paths. They saw a connection between you and Isabella. Perhaps she sought something you had."

Jenifer's eyes widened as she got more immersed in the conversation she was reading. She said to herself "Isabell mentioned dreaming about me in her diary. Could it be that she was trying to communicate with me?"
