Jason's pov
Everywhere was in chaos, with signs of fighting all around. Cries and shouts echoed, and the scent of blood filled the air.
Sounds of fighting were coming from a distance. The sounds were indistinct, as if coming from all directions.
Heavy breathing and fighting were coming close to where I was hidden in an enclosed cellar.
The noise resembled two wounded animals fighting tenaciously. "Awol!! Awol!" A voice pierced the night, growing weaker until it stopped completely. One of the combatants had been defeated. "My lord, there is no sign of the boy," a voice growled.
"Nonsense, the general ordered you to take the baby dead or alive," another voice, authoritative, responded.
After some shuffling, "Burn the whole place," it commanded.
"Yes, sir," a raspy voice replied. That was the last thing I heard before blacking out.

Dring! Dring! Dring!!
The sound of the alarm jolted me up from my sleep. Grumpily, I looked blindly for the alarm that was unusually very loud in my ear, like the stupid device was going to wake up the whole neighborhood. After throwing the alarm across the wall, did the noisy disturbance stop?
"Jason boy, get down here in 2 minutes!" A voice shouted.
I felt like going to throw the owner of the disturbance across the wall to meet with his counterparts, but the voice kept on coming louder in my ears, almost causing me to bleed.
I became wide awake, not after my latest nightmare flashing across my mind. They all similar but different nightmares I have been having for a time now, but recently, it's getting scary and out of place like my recent one where I was in the body of a boy.
After dressing and walking downstairs, I was half asleep.
I was jolted up like a wet rat meeting a naked wire when I saw who was seating in my house. Across the stairs, just in our dining room, sat a girl that could be said to be the most beautiful girl I had set my eyes on.
Though I am the star of my school, many pretty girls and cheerleaders have thrown themselves away countless times, but I have just not had the time to look at them twice, not to talk about humoring their advances. Only glares and grunts I use to chase them all away.
So I can be said to be new in how I am feeling because I don't have feelings for a girl, because numerous girls in their hundreds can line up just to watch me play basketball or collect my number, but I haven't given even one of them my number.
Standing there looking at her eating from what looked like a flask, I felt the anxiousness to go and confess my love for this pretty damsel sitting in our dining. A fire that I have never felt before ignited as I stood staring like a creep until a cough broke me out of my trance.
"ahh." I was shocked and turned to see my uncle's stern gaze staring back at me. I wondered how my uncle crept behind me without me knowing. I composed myself as I greeted my uncle while making my way to the kitchen.
I could strangely feel my uncle's stern eyes were still peering at me from the back disapprovingly.
"Kate," my uncle called rather loudly meet jason. Jason meet Kate, and my uncle introduced both of us.
"I'm Kate. Nice to meet you," the girl replied.
Her voice sounded like music to my ears as I was about to get lost again.
"Heya," I replied while trying to sound my bossy way, but my voice, which on normal occasions was bariton and girls adored, came out like a frog croaking.
I was not my normal self. I felt anger building up, which shouldn't be because I am always calm and collected, the perks of being the hottest guy in my school.
Kate smiled while saying shyly, "I heard you go to the same school as me. Thank you for agreeing to show me around."
"What?!" I said loudly, cutting her off. "There's no way it'd happen if I'm not a babysitter for a small child!"
"She is not a child," Uncle Monez replied, frowning.
"That doesn't mean it's my responsibility to be in charge of..." I gestured towards Kate, trying to remember her name. "Her, I have practice today." I retorted back at my uncle.
Kate had shock written on her face as she was still in the middle of completing her words. "I'm sorry for saying too much," she finally said nervously.
"No darling, everything is fine," Uncle Monez gave an apologetic expression to Kate before turning to glare at me, gesturing towards the kitchen. I followed my uncle to the kitchen. But on passing by and seeing the sadness in Kate,
I almost ran to apologize to her, but I held myself, going into the kitchen where my uncle was waiting for me.
"Young man, what was that? The poor girl is going through a lot in her family. Her mother divorced her father, so she is still going through the pain of it. I am disappointed," Uncle Monez berated me.
I was going through a really weird phenomenon in my mind, a battle of keeping my anger in check and trying to block a voice that was constantly nagging at me to show my authority and end this once and for all, but the rational mind was fighting with the irrational voice speaking in my head. I fought to rein in the voice to listen to my uncle.
Twack!
A painful feeling came from my shoulder where Uncle Monez slapped me. I was able to come back to reality and discovered that as this battle was still going on in my head, Uncle finished talking a long time ago to see that I was not even paying attention.
Uncle Monez said, "You are late for school, and don't make Kate go to school on her first day."
I felt tired and disappointed in the air, but as I tried apologizing, not a word came out. I tried again and again, but all I got was the word stuck in my throat.
I went immediately to pick up the car keys, gesturing to the girl who quickly followed me as we drove to school.
***
Uncle Monez sighed while looking away from the window. jason's car flashed in the distance, his face was unreadable as he started clearing the plates in the dining hall.
There was an untouched tea, and that was the tea I was supposed to take every morning.
Uncle Monez's face changed. He could feel another headache coming as he wondered why I didn't drink my daily tea as he strictly warned me to. Sharply, he raised his head, his eyes flashed with an orange color, and in a fraction of a second, he was at the kitchen counter where I sat in the kitchen.
His face became uglier as he traced a path through the striking dent that was on the concrete counter, the exact place I placed my hand this morning.
The drive to school was filled with awkward tension that could be cut with a knife. I didn't say a word, only looking out the window.
Jason seemed to notice that I was distressed about something. I thought about how he treated me like I was a burden, a liability. That is what I have always been to people around me. That is what I have been called numerous times.
Tears threatened to start spilling out of my eyes, but I tried very hard not to cry for some stupid proud boy who thinks he is so popular.
I understand that he is the best basketball player in the school, but that doesn't give him the right to look down on me.
I can't believe my father handed me over to him like a small girl who needs saving to show me around the school on my first day
Unconsciously, my eyes will drift across the car to see him with squinted eyes and a frown on his face, like someone who is in deep thought. I sighed and
After what seemed like unending hours of torture, which was just a 10-minute drive, we reached the parking lot. Jason switched off the car, turning to me. "About what happened..."
"It's OK, Jason," I cut him off.
"I understand you have friends, and you are popular, and you wouldn't want your image to be stained by being seen with a newbie who has family issues at home."
Jason sighed, wanting to explain himself, but I beat him to it again. "I'll find my way around. See you." I said, stepping out from the car and slamming the door so hard I imagined it being his face, I had slammed.
Students hurried through the school. I had my backpack slung over one shoulder. I was greeted with a bubbling and joyful atmosphere. There were canopies of trees that provided shade for the students.
The main building of Greenhills was a combination of modern architecture and nature. I couldn't help but be amazed at how well the school was designed while still maintaining the natural environment.
Dustbins were placed strategically along the pathway that led to the main door of the school.
I could feel many eyes following me immediately as I entered the school premises, and many of the students started whispering and murmuring. I couldn't help but overhear what some of them were saying while pointing and giving me side glances.
"She looks like a new student."
"She is the one, but I don't see him anywhere around her," some said.
"Such beautiful black hair," others commented.
Some jealous girls were giggling, pointing at my dress. Seeing this, I released a deep sigh. This morning I had problems selecting clothes to wear, not that I didn't own any classy clothes, but numerous of my clothes were gowns that I had been forced to wear by my mother since I was small.
The thought of my mother brought unwanted memories. I had buried the day she left without saying goodbye or leaving a note, only for my father to receive divorce papers to sign a few days later.
I shoved those memories back as I tried to focus on surviving my first day of school.
I nervously navigated the hallway but was stopped by three girls who looked like they were dressed for a party.
Each one of them was beautiful and carried themselves with so much pride and aloofness.
Their leader, a tall blonde girl who exudes an air of authority, was the most beautiful of them all.
As the leader of the group, she was overly dressed to kill with a black mini skirt and paired it up with heels that were screaming money, draping it all with a jacket made of fur I thought could only be seen in museums.
With how other students were dressed and comparing it with what they wore, I deduced that the three girls were popular in the school. Given that the girls were proudly wearing their hot mini skirts without interruptions by the teachers, I knew that I had met the queen of Greenhills.
"Well, well," the leader of the group with blonde hair smirked slightly. "Look who we have here."
"You must be the new girl?"
I nodded hesitantly. I had enough experience to know that I was already unfortunate this morning. I could not help but curse Jason in my mind for bringing bad luck to me.
The leader of the trio brought out her purse, taking out lip gloss and smearing it on her already red lips. All the while, her friends giggled and encouraged her.
By now, all attention in the hallway was focused on me. Surrounded by the three girls, many were basking in my misfortune as they felt that I needed to know my place. Who told me to come with the number one star of the school?
The girls among the audience were happy as they couldn't wait to enjoy the show, while a few males among them sent pitiful glances at me as they already knew that I was in for big trouble.
The leader, after finishing her parade and mumbling gibberish, put a finishing touch on her lips, smacking them so loudly to gain more attention. Then she turned her attention on me, criticising me with disgust written on her face.
"I saw you coming out of my man's car," she inquired while peering down at me.
At first, I was lost as I tried to understand how I had offended the troublemakers until I connected with who the blonde hot girl was talking about. The leader was talking about Jason. For the second time this morning, I cursed Jason in my head for transferring his bad luck to me.
I was speechless.
"Are you talking about Jason?" I asked, trying to be sure. I didn't know how to reply so as not to offend the already offended blonde.
The blonde's face became uglier and twisted as she came closer, her eyes changing for a second. I could swear I saw her eyes flash with colour. She looked like a lioness stalking her prey, with me being the prey and her the lioness.
"Don't ever mention his name again," she growled, lowering her voice.
I swallowed hard, utterly terrified for no reason, and my body already failed to respond to my will. I realised I could not move my hands when I tried to stand up for myself.
"Let's leave this ugly duckling, Rose. She is not worth our time," one of Rose's cohorts beckoned to her.
"Maybe she needs a map of the school to know those that are above her league," the one to Rose's left snickered.
I tried to shake off the fear running through my body, all to no avail. It felt like the control I had of my body had been removed. My ears heard the jeers of the nearby students, and I closed my eyes in shame as I wondered if bad luck was following me today.
"What is going on here?" I heard a familiar voice. I was grateful as I saw Jason making his way over angrily, pushing others aside.
Kate's pov
Rose turned her attention as she recovered her composure quickly. "ooh darling Jason , we were just giving the new girl some orientation", Rose replied to Jason, smiling seductively.
I could see Jason's jaw tighten as his eyes were filled with uncontrollable anger when he looked at me.
"Don't you ever touch her again", Jason, his voice changing to a growl.
The two of Rose's friends scurried back like people who saw a snake, their eyes looking down submissively.
"Jason darling" Rose started, coming closer, raising her hand towards him.
Jason, who was far away from me, suddenly appeared before me like a ghost. I looked up in confusion, looking at Rose, who still had her hands stretched outward in an awkward position.
A flicker of annoyance plastered her face, followed by her widening her eyes in shock.
Her two cohorts were utterly mortified like they had seen a ghost.
Rose, the number one beauty of Greenhill high school, has been made a fool in front of everyone.
"I have to get her to the headmistress's office as well as help her find her way around" Jason said, firmly locking eyes with Rose who was still surprisingly still lost in her world, staring at her hands like she was asking what she missed.
I felt a hand grab mine, pulling me out of the trancelike state I was in and making a run for it, leaving the stunned Kate and her friends, who were acting all weird.
Jason held my hands tightly. I didn't realize that he was holding a little hard as my brain was trying to process what had happened.
First was Rose's eyes that I swore were glowing red when she threatened me.
Secondly, Jason magically appeared beside me in the hallway when I knew he was far away. All these things didn't add up and I refuse to think about it because what would people say if i told them of a girl whose eyes glow red or of a guy who magically disappears and appears?
We reached a quiet part of the school before stopping.
"Sorry". Jason realized he was squeezing my hands tightly and apologized.
It's alright," I replied, still confused and panting from trying to keep up with his pace.
"It's fine, Kate. I'll make sure Rose doesn't bother you again," Jason said quickly, patting my head before disappearing down the hall, but not before pointing out the way to the headmaster's office.
******
After finishing my registration, I rushed to meet up with my history class, which had already begun 20 minutes ago.
My head was swarming with thoughts of how my first day at school had been, from meeting Jason, who had been acting weird, to encountering Rose and her friends, and Jason saving me and showing me to the headmaster's office distracted.
I didn't see where I was going and collided with someone, sending my class schedule and papers flying.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't look where I was going," I apologized, quickly bending down to pick up my books.
The person I collided with didn't bend down to help me.
"Look where you're going," the stranger grunted.
When I looked up, my face showed displeasure, but my breath caught in my throat as I saw who the stranger was. I whispered, whatever I wanted to say stuck in my throat as I stared at the handsome strange, he was in his late 20s. Towering over me with an athletic build, his muscles under his shirts where screaming to be let out.
"Well, well, next time look wh..." The stranger stopped, taking a deep sniff around me and muttering something low I couldn't hear.
After a few moments, the stranger seemed to come back from whatever he was thinking.
"Nice to meet you. I'm Blake" he said, extending his hand while flashing a smile.
"I'm Kate," I replied, half councious and half drooling.
"Is it like you're new in town?" he asked.
I nodded,
A look of realization showed on Blake's face.
"I hope you enjoy your stay in the western district," blake said while walking away.
I was confused, but the bell for the next lecture jolted me back. "Sh**!" I shouted, running to my third class of the day.
Rushing down the now lonely and deserted hallway, I finally found the right class after wasting three hours trying to locate it.
I remembered one of the many embarrassing moments when I had entered the middle of a Chinese lecture.
The small-built teacher had asked a question in Chinese, but I, having no clue, stood in the middle of the class panting and looking lost.
Realizing I was probably in the wrong class, the teacher spoke in English and directed me to the correct one.
Checking my schedule and cross-referencing it with the notice on the door, it read "History IV."
Being sure of the right class and making sure it corresponded with what was written in my book, I stepped into the class.
To my surprise, the same stranger I met in the hallway, who had acted a little weird to me, was the teacher of the History class.
I thought he was a little too young to be teaching in high school."Oh, I think the new dumb Cinderella got lost in the hallway," a familiar voice sounded from the background.I heard snickers and laughs from the students.
The young man, who was in the middle of the lecture, turned, a look of surprise and amusement lighting his face as he recognized me.
I immediately cursed Rose. Why in the world would it be the same class she's in?
I was so angry with Jason for abandoning me, causing me to miss three of my lectures and making me look like a fool.I didn't want to have anything to do with Rose; the events of the afternoon were still fresh in my mind.
Keeping a straight face and trying hard not to look at Rose's triumphant expression,
I stepped into the class and found a seat at the back amidst the scrutinizing eyes of the young teacher and the snickers from the students.
Sighing to myself, I resigned myself to a long, torturous first day at school.
