From Layoff to Legacy: The Heiress's Rise

Author: : Valeria
Genre: Romance
My fingers flew across the keyboard, perfecting the last line of code for NextGen. Our idyllic Napa honeymoon with David was just weeks away, PTO approved. Everything felt perfectly aligned. Then the email landed: "Your position... eliminated... effective immediately." Laid off. Just like that. The same day David celebrated his massive promotion – a promotion he gained by orchestrating my downfall, facilitated by his affair with our boss, Olivia, who was carrying his child. He chillingly called it a "calculated move for our future," even as Olivia, smug and cruel, demanded I move out of our shared condo, saying they "needed the space." She went further, publicly humiliating me at a company town hall, accusing me of corporate espionage and forcing a public apology. David' s only concern was his own career, whispering, "Don't make this worse for me." The words "I apologize" tasted like poison. I stood there, trapped and utterly humiliated, my life in ruins, betrayed by the man I loved. He thought he was "protecting" me, but he had no idea what he had truly destroyed. But as Olivia' s triumphant smirk spread, a new announcement boomed: "NextGen' s new Chairperson and acting CEO... Ms. Sarah Miller." My name. Because unbeknownst to them, I was Sarah Miller, heiress to Aura Holdings, the global tech giant that had just acquired their company. It was time for my own calculated move.

David' s only concern was his own career, whispering, "Don't make this worse for me."

The words "I apologize" tasted like poison.

Chapter 1

My fingers flew across the keyboard, putting the final touches on the code.

NextGen Innovations was a whirlwind, always, but today felt different.

Our honeymoon in Napa Valley was just weeks away.

David and I had already put in our PTO requests. Approved.

I smiled, thinking of vineyards and sunshine.

Then the email landed in my inbox.

Subject: Important Update: Organizational Restructuring.

My stomach tightened.

I clicked it open.

Words blurred. "Your position...eliminated...effective immediately."

Laid off.

Just like that.

The office noise faded. My ears buzzed.

I looked up, dazed.

Across the open-plan office, a small crowd gathered around David' s desk.

Laughter. Clapping.

He was shaking hands, a wide grin on his face.

"Congrats on the promotion, Dave!" someone yelled.

Promotion?

David caught my eye. His smile faltered for a second, then returned, strained.

He walked over, his new an O'Connell suit looking crisp.

"Sarah, hey," he started, a little too loud.

"What' s going on?" I managed, my voice barely a whisper.

"Big news," he said, avoiding my gaze. "I got the Senior Project Manager role."

He paused. "And listen, about that Napa trip..."

My heart sank.

"Olivia needs me on an urgent investor relations trip. Same dates. San Francisco first, then maybe Napa, if there's time."

Olivia Hayes. His boss. The Senior Director.

"Olivia?" I asked, numb.

"Yeah, it's a huge opportunity for me, for us," he said, finally looking at me, his eyes shining with an ambition I suddenly found chilling. "This sets us up, babe."

The layoff letter felt like ice in my hand.

"Us," I repeated, the word tasting like ash.

Chapter 2

The key scraped in the lock of our condo.

The silence inside was heavy.

David was already there, tie loosened, pouring himself a whiskey.

"We need to talk," I said, my voice flat.

He swirled the amber liquid. "Rough day, huh? Sorry about the job, Sarah. It' s just bad timing with my news."

"Bad timing?" I echoed. "David, Olivia is pregnant, isn't she?"

The glass stopped halfway to his lips.

He set it down slowly. He didn't look surprised.

"How did you know?"

"It doesn't matter. Is it yours?"

He ran a hand through his hair. "Yes."

The word hung in the air.

"It was a calculated move, Sarah," he said, his voice earnest, like he was explaining a complex project plan.

"A calculated move?"

"For my career. For our future. Olivia can do a lot for me. She' ll get tired of me after the baby, you know how these things go. Then we can get married, my career will be secure. We' ll be set."

I stared at him, disbelief warring with a cold, rising anger.

"And my layoff?" I asked, my voice dangerously quiet. "Was that part of your calculation too?"

He flinched. "I... I had a hand in it. I thought it would protect you. Olivia can be... jealous. I didn't want you in her line of fire. This way, you're safe."

"Safe," I repeated.

Devastation hit me, a physical blow.

He had no idea.

No idea about the trust fund waiting for me when I turned thirty.

No idea that Aura Holdings, the global tech conglomerate, was my father' s empire.

He never needed to stoop this low.

I was working at NextGen, incognito, at my father' s insistence. To learn. To prove myself before I could touch a dime or take any real role.

All his scheming, his betrayal... for nothing.

The irony was a bitter pill.

"You thought you were protecting me?" I finally said. "By destroying my job and our engagement?"
