Chapter 1

In the heart of the city that never sleeps, where flashy Broadway lights compete with exclusive shops for attention, and towering apartment buildings house high-flying business tycoons, lies the seemingly elusive land of opportunity-New York City. At least, that's what many believe. For me, however, the metropolis is not a glittering dream but a harsh reality, a city marred by depression, unaffordable rent, unbearable traffic, and the constant cacophony of screaming people and bustling roads.

Amidst this concrete jungle stands one of the world's most renowned multinational technology companies, ATC. It's a place I've called home for over four years, a place where the mornings echo with the same enthusiastic chant. On this particular day, as I settled into my routine, our Vice President, a woman known for her theatrical leadership style, took center stage.

"We are the face of the company!" she declared, perched on top of a chair as if delivering a proclamation from the corporate throne. "We create the connection between the buyer and the seller. We promote the goods. Without us, ATC is nothing."

With arms raised triumphantly, she proclaimed, "We are the marketing department!" Her war cry was met with half-hearted applause from the weary souls in the room, already exhausted by the daily dose of corporate theatrics.

"Gosh, the second-hand embarrassment I feel every day for her. I can't-" Alice, my colleague and confidante, shook her head, sharing the sentiment that lingered in the air.

"This is nothing new. Our VP is crazy," John, another colleague, yawned, preparing himself for yet another hectic day in the office.

"Other departments call us weirdos because of her," Alice remarked as she took her seat, and I settled in between Alice and John.

"And finance calls us the money-wasting department," John unintentionally voiced his thoughts a bit too loudly, catching the attention of our eccentric VP.

The VP, upon hearing the remark, scowled and retorted, "That's because they are the nerds department, Mr. Ralph. Don't you ever dare utter such unholy words in here. I'll report you to the chief." John, slightly embarrassed, offered a quick apology, "Sorry, ma'am."

"I told you she has super hearing," Alice hissed to me. "I swear she's not human. My money is on vampire."

"I heard werewolves have mates," Henry, sitting in front of us, smirked. "Maybe I'm your mate, sweetheart. We should... you know, before the heat comes." Henry's suggestive comment nearly caused Alice to erupt into a pool of lava, and I quickly wrapped my arm around her shoulder to offer support.

"Alice, relax, chief is coming," I whispered as I noticed our Chief Marketing Officer approaching from the elevator.

Our Chief, the head of the marketing department, was the beacon of sanity in the midst of chaos. A kind and amiable man, he was the only one with the power to silence our eccentric VP, though he rarely exercised it, given his affable nature.

He was a man in his fifties, devoted to his family above all else. His equally delightful wife contributed to our office camaraderie by baking us cookies, offering thoughtful gifts, and inviting us to their anniversary parties every year.

"Good morning, everyone," the Chief greeted, coming to a halt with a big smile. "I see y'all are already working very hard for the next campaign. Sorry if I disturbed you."

"Aww, my heart is melting," Alice said, placing a hand over her heart. "Why did he have to be 30 years older than me? Or else I would've married him."

"Love has no age," John whispered with a knowing smile.

"Yes, but he is married," Alice complained.

"I never said he isn't," John retorted, his tone defensive.

Alice leaned forward, fixing her gaze on John. "Why are you all fired up? Don't tell me you like an older woman. Is she married?"

"I don't like anyone-" John began, but I cut him off with a hiss.

"Guy, shut up. Chief is talking."

They closed their mouths, diverting their attention back to what the Chief was saying, as he continued with updates about the upcoming campaign and the collective efforts of the marketing department.

As the morning continued, the atmosphere shifted between playful banter and the seriousness of work discussions. Alice and John's exchange about the Chief's age and marital status became a lighthearted ongoing joke, providing much-needed comic relief in the otherwise hectic work environment.

Throughout the day, we tackled our tasks, navigating the intricacies of marketing strategies and campaigns in the dynamic world of technology. The office buzzed with energy, occasional laughter, and the hum of collaborative efforts as we worked towards our shared goals.

"Do you ever wonder if she believes her own speeches?" Alice mused, taking a bite of her sandwich.

John chuckled. "I doubt it. It's all for show. Theatrics to pump us up, I suppose."

Alice shrugged. "Well, it gets us talking, doesn't it? I guess in the grand scheme of things, it adds a bit of spice to our otherwise monotonous routine."

In the late afternoon, a surprise email from the Chief announced a team-building event scheduled for the following week. The excitement rippled through the office, temporarily eclipsing the usual work-related stress.

"Team-building, huh?" Alice grinned. "Maybe this time the VP will join us in a trust fall. That would be something to witness."

John laughed. "I can already imagine her theatrics in a trust fall. It might turn into a Broadway performance".

As the workday drew to a close, we gathered our belongings and prepared to face the bustling streets of New York City once again. The vibrant energy of the city outside contrasted with the controlled chaos within the office walls.

Chapter 2

Rick tilted his head up and looked at me. Our gazes locked. For a moment I felt breathless as I stared at those eyes of his, the colour of midwinter sky that swirled with a thousand hues of blue. They were cold but warm at the same time and I felt hypnotised, wanting to get myself lost in them.

His face showed no rage, completely blank just like everyone else had said. A man void of emotions.

And then I did it again. I hiccuped.

I gasped and covered my mouth with my hand. Dear lord what have I done?

He raised a brow and I could already see the impending results of my actions in his eyes. The call I would receive from the HR department. My resignation letter.

"Rick!" A high pitched voice came from the hallway and Rick wrenched his gaze away from mine.

"Darling you there?" A tall red haired woman in a white tight dress came to the door. "Oh I didn't know you were in a meeting" She giggled.

A look of utter annoyance crossed over Rick's face.

"By the way" She approached him. "I bought two dresses but I don't know what to wear for dinner-"

"Take her away!" Rick barked loudly, anger lacing his voice.

Everyone standing and sitting looked up at Rick in shock and it took me a moment to realise what he just did. He reacted!

He never gets angry, never gets happy but now the woman's presence made him go mad. And his mad self is more scarier than the calm deadly self. And for once I thought the HR call is an act of mercy.

I'd be happy to get the call than be the receiving end of his anger.

Several people came and dragged the woman away, who screamed and yelled, demanding to be released. After the door closed behind them, Rick sat on his seat and started the meeting.

I helped our chief with the files and from time to time I noticed him giving me looks of sympathy. Guess it's confirmed then. I'm going to get fired. There goes all my dreams down the drain.

ATC is one of the most highest paying companies in the states and it's an honour to get employed here. They only choose the best and I was a lucky one. But not now. A damn hiccup ruined it all.

How can life be this unfair?

The meeting went on for another hour and thankfully Rick didn't glance at me even once. He only spoke a little words and mostly listened to others' ideas.

Maybe it was because he was interested in them or maybe he was too bored to even speak. And I had a feeling it was the latter.

And can somebody please tell me why I'm calling him Rick and not Mr. Magma?

Jeez woman first name basis huh?

Probably because he wouldn't be my boss at the end of the day.

And why is that? A damn hiccup caused it.

I was already preparing mentally for the call. But it was hard to make up my mind to let go of this job. I have friends here and the salary is very high. I don't want to leave.

After the meeting ended I went back to the marketing department with a dejected look on my face.

"Yoo what happened? Did you see the hottie?" Alice came and nudged my elbow.

I nodded. "And I hiccuped in front of the hottie"

John let out a laugh. "That's a good joke"

I neither smiled nor laughed, just gave him the same sorrowful expression I'd been wearing all the way down the elevator.

Chapter 3

John, Alice, and I exchanged shocked glances as the reality of the situation sank in.

"He mistook you for her," Alice exclaimed, disbelief written all over her face.

"Oh God no," I muttered, shaking my head and slumping into my chair. Guilt gnawed at me. "Mr. Magma doesn't know my name. He probably would've told HR to fire the chief's secretary."

I ran my fingers through my hair, grappling with the weight of the situation. "What do I do? I made the real secretary lose her job."

"Stay quiet," Alice suggested.

"Are you kidding me?" John accused. "What if it was you? What if you got fired because of someone else's mistake?"

"That secretary," Alice stepped forward, "purposely took sick leave. It's not the first time she did it to ditch a meeting."

"You don't know that. What if she's actually sick?" I questioned.

"If you want proof, check her boyfriend's Insta stories," Alice spat angrily.

"Guys, shut up!" I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, attempting to calm myself. "I'm going to turn in."

"What?" They both screamed simultaneously.

John came and sat next to me. "You don't have to resign. Maybe... talk it out with Mr. Magma."

"Are you stupid, John?" Alice asked, hands on her hips. "Do you think Mr. Magma will say, 'Oh, thank you for making things right. Maybe I should take my words back and not fire you. A good employee like you deserves a second chance.'" She dramatized her words.

"It's not what I meant," John defended himself.

"Then you're clearly stupid."

"Guys," I interjected, holding up my hands. "For once, stop arguing." I looked at both of them and waited until they relaxed. "I'm going to call the chief." I took out my phone and started dialing his number.

He picked up after three rings. "Hello."

"Hello, Sir, it's me, Caroline."

"Oh, Caroline, uh... I guess you heard the news."

"Yeah," I answered with guilt. "I'll umm... resign, Sir." I said reluctantly. I didn't want to lose the job, but it was the right thing to do.

"Don't do anything reckless now. We'll talk about this tomorrow. Come to my office at 8." Then he cut the call.

I put my phone down and stared at it in despair. Alice couldn't contain her impatience. "What did he say?"

"He said to come to his office tomorrow." I leaned back in my chair and sighed. "How can I come to work when I'm supposed to be fired?"

"Don't overthink. Go home and have a good rest."

"I don't think I'll be able to sleep at all."

...

The next morning, I nervously knocked on the chief's door.

"Come in," the chief called, and I walked in. The first thing I noticed was that the secretary's desk at the front of the chief's office was empty, and it was all my fault. I made a big mistake, and now I needed to do something before it got messier.

"Oh, Caroline, come and sit, please," the chief gestured to the sofa in the middle of the room.

I sat on it, and someone brought me a cup of coffee. "Thank you-" I looked up and my eyes widened in shock. It was the chief's secretary.

"I- you how-" I stuttered.

"I came to pack my things," she gave me a small smile, and I felt guilt bubbling inside me at a tremendous speed.
