Introduction

They called me a genius once, the brightest star among thirteen protégées hand-picked by Dr. Silas Vance, the AI ethics pioneer.

My reward for creating Nexus, the most advanced AI, was supposed to be a tech empire and the hand of Liam Vance, the man I' d loved my whole life, his adopted son.

Instead, victory turned to ashes when Maya Chen, Liam's favorite, plunged from Vance Tower moments after my win, a tragic fall that sealed my fate.

My wedding night wasn' t a celebration; it was the start of my execution, as Liam laid Maya's cold body between us, shrieking, "You stole everything from her, from me!" until his voice was hoarse.

He shattered a mirror, forcing me to kneel on the shards, demanding, "Beg for her forgiveness. Ten thousand times."

In the raw torment that followed, he injected me with hallucinogens, sending notorious hackers to tear my mind apart digitally, recording every horrifying moment.

Then, he uploaded the videos, crafting a lie the world devoured: I was a "digital harlot" who drove innocent Maya to her death, a public shame that drowned my family, seizing their assets.

When I woke, not in a grave but months before the competition's end, I knew what I had to do.

With ice in my veins, I secretly swapped my masterpiece AI with Maya' s simple, flawed prototype; let her have the win, let her have Liam, let her have the toxic glory.

This time, I just wanted to live, to break free from their twisted, profound connection that had nearly destroyed me; now, it would be their undoing.

Chapter 1

Ava was one of thirteen. Thirteen protégées hand-picked by the great Dr. Silas Vance, the pioneer of AI ethics, the man who built a tech empire from the ground up. She was also one of his adopted son' s childhood playmates. Liam Vance. A name that was once the center of her world.

Dr. Vance had given each of them a prototype AI assistant. It was a test, a competition that would define their futures.

"Whoever among you can develop the most advanced and ethically sound AI, which we will call Nexus," he had announced, his voice echoing in the sterile, white laboratory, "will not only inherit a significant portion of Vance Industries but will also become Liam' s fiancée."

The stakes were clear. The prize was a kingdom and its prince.

In another life, a life she remembered with a clarity that felt like a brand on her soul, Ava had won. She had poured every ounce of her brilliance, every sleepless night, into her prototype. She had created Nexus.

And that victory had destroyed her.

On the day the winner was announced, Maya Chen, Liam' s favorite, the one he had always doted on and protected, jumped from the roof of the Vance Tower. A beautiful, tragic fall that sealed Ava' s fate.

Her wedding night was not a celebration. It was the beginning of her execution. Liam didn' t come to their marital bed with love, he came with a corpse. He carried Maya Chen' s cold, lifeless body and laid it between them.

"Kneel," he had commanded, his voice devoid of any warmth she had once imagined.

He had shattered a mirror, scattering the shards across the floor where she was forced to kneel.

"Beg for her forgiveness. Ten thousand times."

Her knees bled, but the pain was nothing compared to the venom in his words.

"If you hadn' t tampered with her AI, she would have been the one to create Nexus! You stole everything from her, from me!"

He screamed until he was hoarse, his face twisted into a mask of pure hatred.

"You made me lose her forever. Now, you will go to the grave and apologize."

He didn' t kill her quickly. He tied her to the bed, a new bed in a room that was supposed to be theirs. He injected her with a serum, a hallucinogen derived from rare digital narcotics that warped her reality into a living nightmare. Every thirty minutes, a new hacker, notorious and ruthless, was sent into the room. They didn' t touch her body, but they tore her mind apart, a digital assault so violating, so humiliating, that she wished for the release of death.

Liam recorded every moment. After she finally broke, her mind and spirit shattered beyond repair, he uploaded the videos. He crafted a story, a lie that the world eagerly consumed. Ava, the brilliant heiress, was a cheating "digital harlot" who drove the innocent Maya to her death.

The public shame was a tidal wave that drowned her family. Her parents, unable to withstand the disgrace and the aggressive takeover of their own company by Liam, died from the stress and heartbreak. Liam absorbed their assets, completing his conquest.

But that was the past. A past she had somehow been allowed to escape.

When she woke up, not in a cold grave but in her own bed months before the competition' s end, she didn't waste a single moment on tears. She knew what she had to do.

With trembling hands and a heart of ice, she had performed the most critical hack of her life. In the dead of night, she had secretly swapped her AI prototype with Maya Chen' s. She took Maya' s simple, flawed code and left her own masterpiece, her path to victory and destruction, in its place.

This time, Maya could have the win. She could have Liam. She could have the glory.

Ava just wanted to live. Their profound, twisted connection would no longer be her sacrifice. It would be their undoing.

Chapter 2

The final results of the Nexus competition were announced in the main auditorium of Vance Tower. The air was thick with anticipation. Twelve of the protégées stood in a line on the stage, their faces a mixture of hope and anxiety. Ava stood among them, her expression carefully neutral.

Dr. Silas Vance stood at the podium, his presence commanding the room. Liam was beside him, his eyes already fixed on one person in the line.

Maya Chen.

"After careful evaluation of all thirteen prototypes," Dr. Vance began, his voice amplified by the speakers, "we have a winner. The creator of the AI that has shown the most potential, the one who will help shape the future of Vance Industries, is... Maya Chen."

A wave of murmurs rippled through the audience. A few of the other protégées gasped. Their heads whipped towards Maya, then towards Ava. Everyone knew Ava was the genius. Everyone had assumed she would win.

Maya feigned a look of complete shock, her hand flying to her mouth. Tears welled in her eyes as she looked at Liam, a silent, triumphant message passing between them.

Ava kept her face blank, but inside, a cold sense of satisfaction settled in her stomach. The first part of her plan was complete.

"That' s impossible!" one of the other girls, Sarah, muttered under her breath. "Maya' s code was basic just a month ago. How could she have made such a leap?"

"She had Liam' s help, obviously," another one whispered back, filled with jealousy. "He was always giving her extra resources."

And it was true. Dr. Vance, honoring the rules of the competition, announced Maya' s prize.

"Maya will be given her own private lab, unlimited resources, and a full team to help her develop Nexus to its final stage," he declared. "And, as promised, she will become the official fiancée of my son, Liam Vance."

The room erupted in polite applause, but the undercurrent of shock and envy was undeniable. Whispers followed Ava as she stepped off the stage.

"What happened to Ava? I thought she was the sure thing."

"Guess all that talent was just hype. She spent more time chasing Liam than working."

"I heard she had a breakdown last month. Maybe she just lost her touch."

The words were meant to hurt, and in her previous life, they would have. Now, they were just noise. She walked past them all, her head held high, ignoring the pitying and scornful glances.

Then she saw them. Liam had rushed to Maya' s side, pulling her into a possessive embrace. He kissed her forehead, his smile radiant.

"We did it, Maya," he said, his voice loud enough for everyone nearby to hear. "I knew you could. You deserve this."

Maya leaned into him, her eyes fluttering shut as if in ecstasy. "Oh, Liam. I only did it for you. Now... about that promise your father made?" she asked, her voice a sweet, cloying whisper.

Liam laughed, a sound that used to make Ava' s heart flutter. "Don' t worry. I' m going to hold him to it. We' ll be married before the year is out."

He looked over Maya' s head and his eyes met Ava' s. There was no warmth, no flicker of their shared childhood. Only cold, dismissive triumph. He was looking at her as if she were a piece of furniture, something irrelevant that happened to be in his line of sight.

He held Maya tighter, his hand possessively on her waist, a deliberate display for Ava' s benefit. It was a clear message: You lost. She won. This is my choice.

Ava felt a ghost of the old pain, the familiar ache of unrequited love and public humiliation. People around them were watching, whispering.

"Look at her. She dedicated ten years of her life to him."

"What a waste. He never even looked at her twice when Maya was around."

"Poor, delusional girl. She really thought she had a chance."

Ava turned away. Let them talk. Let them think she was a failure. She had given up the prize to save her life. It was a bargain she would make again and again.
