From Frumpy to CEO: Her Reckoning

Author: : Celine Egan
Genre: Billionaires
As the heiress to Vance Corp, I was groomed to inherit a multi-billion dollar empire, but everyone, especially the four "Vance Fellows" meant to be my future partners, saw me as the awkward, frumpy girl who couldn' t possibly lead. I even harbored a foolish crush on Julian Hayes, the charismatic golden boy among them. Then, our corporate systems were hit by a catastrophic cyberattack, bleeding millions by the minute. As I barked urgent orders to shut down the breach, Julian, instead of helping, just smirked, calling me "hysterical" and letting the company burn, while he and the others consoled my seemingly distraught assistant, Chloe. The company lost over two hundred million dollars under their complacent watch, and my reputation on the board was shattered just as Julian intended: viewed as an unstable, emotional girl unfit to lead. That night, I overheard their cruel laughter: Julian, Chloe, and the others, plotting to steal my company, calling me "frumpy" and "broken," vowing to fire me once they took over. The final straw? Watching Chloe, directed by them, trample my late mother' s cherished rose garden, destroying the last piece of her legacy for their amusement. The pain was a cold, sharp shard, fueled by the sheer betrayal from those I once trusted. How could they be so utterly callous, so consumed by ambition? They continued to underestimate me, spreading malicious rumors, leaking stories of my "erratic behavior" to the press, and isolating me after my father collapsed, thinking I was powerless and broken. They saw surrender in my silence, weakness in my grief, and a prime opportunity to seize everything I held dear. They were so, so wrong. From that moment, the awkward heiress was gone, replaced by a woman forged in fire. I moved in the shadows, meticulously planning their downfall. Now, watch me walk into that shareholders' meeting, not as a victim, but as the true CEO. Watch me reclaim my legacy. And watch them face the thunder of my quiet storm.

Introduction

Chapter 1

The red lights on the server racks blinked like a frantic heartbeat.

On the main screen, a skull and crossbones icon mocked us, a digital flag planted by our enemies. The data drain was catastrophic.

"Shut down the primary access points! Reroute all traffic through the secondary firewall and isolate the infected servers. Now!" I commanded, my voice sharp and clear.

This was my plan, a high-risk counter-attack I' d designed for exactly this type of corporate espionage.

The four Vance Fellows, the men my father was grooming to be my future partner, stood frozen. Julian Hayes, the man I once had a foolish crush on, looked at me with pity.

"Amelia, calm down. You're getting hysterical," he said, his voice a smooth, condescending balm.

My personal assistant, Chloe, let out a theatrical sob.

"It's all my fault! I must have clicked on a bad link!"

Liam, Noah, and Ethan rushed to her side, ignoring my direct order.

"It's not your fault, Chloe," Liam cooed.

"We'll protect you," Noah added.

Julian turned his back on the crisis, on me, to put a comforting arm around Chloe. "See, Amelia? You're upsetting her. Let the real executives handle this."

They did nothing. They let the attack bleed us dry.

The company lost over two hundred million dollars in under an hour. My reputation on the board was shattered. They saw exactly what Julian wanted them to see: an unstable, emotional girl unfit to lead.

Later that night, the sterile quiet of the executive floor was broken by voices from Julian's office. I paused, hidden by the shadows of the hallway.

It was Julian, his voice low and intimate. "Don't worry about her. I'm only putting up with the unstable heiress until I secure the CEO position."

Chloe's soft laugh followed.

"Once I take over, I'll fire her and you'll be by my side," Julian promised. "The company needs a real leader, not a broken little girl."

"She's so frumpy, I can't even stand to look at her," Ethan chimed in, and the others laughed in agreement.

The last of my stupid, childish crush on Julian Hayes died right there in that dark hallway. The pain was cold and sharp, a piece of glass in my gut.

The next day, I watched from my office window as they trampled my late mother' s rose garden. Chloe was laughing, directing them to cut the best blooms for a vase in her office. They were destroying the one thing my mother had left behind, just to amuse her.

That was it. I was done.

I walked into my father's study. He looked frail, the illness stealing the strength from his frame, but his eyes were as sharp as ever.

"Dad," I said, my voice steady. "I'm invoking clause 7B of the company's founding charter."

He sat up straighter. He knew exactly what that meant.

"I am officially rejecting all four Vance Fellows. I have made my choice for a partner and future COO."

"Who?" he asked, a knowing look on his face. He had seen their true colors long before I did.

"Marcus Thorne."

My father smiled, a real, genuine smile. He picked up the pen beside his bed and signed the prepared documents without hesitation. "It is done."

Chapter 2

Julian and the others believed my choice was a desperate, emotional tantrum.

They thought I was weak.

"Marcus Thorne?" Julian cornered me outside the boardroom two days later. "The silent, scarred brute from security? Are you really that pathetic, Amelia?"

Liam and Noah snickered behind him. Ethan just shook his head, a look of mock pity on his face.

"You're making this too easy for us," Julian continued, stepping closer. "The board already thinks you're unstable. This just proves it."

They escalated their takeover plan. A story appeared in the Wall Street Journal, quoting anonymous sources who described my "erratic behavior" and "frequent emotional outbursts."

They used their executive power to shower Chloe with luxuries. A new company car. A corner office next to Julian's. A diamond necklace, listed on the expense report as "client entertainment."

I saw them in the garage, Chloe admiring her new car while the four of them stood around her like guards.

I walked over.

I didn't say a word. I held out my hand to the valet standing nearby. "The keys, please."

The valet, confused, looked at Julian. Julian laughed.

"Amelia, that's Chloe's car now. A gift for her hard work."

I looked straight at the valet. "The keys. Now. Or you're fired."

He nervously handed them over. I took the keys, walked to the driver's side door, and dropped them down the storm drain at the corner of the parking garage. I heard them clatter into the darkness.

Then I called security on my phone. "This is Amelia Vance. There is an unauthorized vehicle in the executive garage. Have it towed and impounded immediately."

I turned and walked away without looking back.

The next morning, all four of them, with a tearful Chloe in the center, were waiting for me outside my office.

"You owe Chloe an apology," Julian demanded, his voice tight with anger. "You humiliated her. You traumatized her."

The other three nodded, a united front of indignation. Chloe dabbed at her dry eyes with a tissue.

"You terrorized her over a car," Liam said, his face a mask of disgust. "What is wrong with you?"

I looked at them, a group of ambitious men protecting the woman they were all sleeping with, demanding an apology from the woman they were trying to destroy.

"I have a counter-offer," I said, my voice calm and even. "All four of you can submit your resignations by the end of the day. I will authorize a generous severance package. You can walk away clean."

Julian stared at me, his eyes wide with disbelief, then he burst out laughing. It was an ugly, arrogant sound.

"You think you can fire us? Amelia, you are nothing. We are saving this company from you. We are not going anywhere."

"You're making a mistake," I said softly.

"No," Julian replied, his smile gone. "You already made yours."
