Sabrina's POV
"Fiem ku burn."
I waved my hand in the air and smiled as fire sprang forth in the air, dancing for a while before it went off.
"Incedia." I said under my breath but the fire lit up again.
Damn, that was good. I didn't have to shout before I cast spells. If only I was this good in high school, I could have saved myself from a whole lot of bullying from the older coven girls.
I rolled my eyes, doubting that I might have saved myself. It didn't help that I attended a school full of witches and wizards, and some of them got arrogant and tormented the younger kids because of the advanced spells they knew.
Well, they kept their bullying for the witches alone though. No one was allowed to use spells against the humans in school and risk the race getting exposed.
I wiped sweats off my face and attempted one last spell. I had read it in the advanced book of spells I had stolen from mum's room and had been attempting to try it out for the past two days without success. I hoped I succeeded this time.
"Culca ica burn."
The fire dancing in the air suddenly turned to ice shards and traveled in the air, staying afloat and obviously waiting for my next command.
I grinned to myself, swaying gently on my feet.
I had done it.
I had mastered the advanced spell. I only needed a target before me and their face would be impaled by dangerous and painful ice shards.
I really wished I had known this in high school.
"What are you doing?"
I went still as I heard the voice behind me.
"Shit," I cursed and watched as the ice shards in the air dropped to the ground, digging a huge hole in it.
I winced when I saw the gaping hole in the ground. If I was in trouble few minutes ago when mum caught me practising advanced magic, I was damned now that I had affected the earth with it.
Rule number one of witchcraft and spell binding: Never jeopardize Mother Nature with your magic.
I forced an innocent smile on my face and ignored the way my heart raced as I turned to face my mother. "Mum,"
She snorted, her eyes narrowed at me. "Don't mum me. What are you practising?"
I shrugged. "Learning magic. You told me to practice."
Yeah, Sabrina, what a good thing to do. Dump it all at your mother's feet.
If I had thought her eyes were narrowed then, they had become slits at the moment.
"I didn't tell you to master that. Where did you learn that anyway?"
I sighed, my mouth suddenly going dry. If she was mad at me for practising advanced magic, I didn't think I wanted to find out what she would do to me if she found out I had stolen from her.
Mum had once frozen my hands when I was six and had licked the chocolate icing off the cake she wanted to give to Aunt Mary after repeatedly warning me not to go near the cake.
My heart thudded in fear as I wondered what she was going to do to me.
"Who taught you how to cast the Ice Knife spell, Sabrina?" she asked. "I should call your master. You have no business learning those kinds of spells."
Oh no, she shouldn't do that. I would get punishment from my mother and my master if that happened.
She arched her eyebrows at me and I realized that I had reached out with my hand to stop her. "Is there something you want to tell me, young lady?"
I swallowed, feeling my throat stick to the roof of my mouth. "I... I..." Damn it, why was it so hard to blurt out the truth?
"I learnt the spell from the book you kept under your bed. I stole it." I blurted out, feeling my heart kick against my chest with the admission.
"Wow, our little girl is now a big one. Big enough to defy her mother and steal from her?" Freya, my elder sister, chuckled as she joined us. "Who would have thought of that?"
I groaned at her presence. I didn't need this much audience to witness my shame. How did they find me here anyway? I had thought I would be able to practise in peace.
Scratch peace. I was about to have all my pieces broken.
"I'm not a little girl." I scoffed at Freya. "You are only two years older than I am."
"Still a little girl to me."
"I'm about to be a college student." I reminded her, hating that it sounded like I was whining.
"I'm not so sure I am happy with you going to college anymore." Mum sighed.
My head snapped to her. "What do you mean by that, mum?"
She snorted. "What do you mean by what do I mean by that, little girl?" She asked, purposely using Freya's words to get back at me. "You are misbehaving right under my roof. How can I trust you to behave when you are miles away from me? I should have insisted that you picked the same college your sister is going to."
Uh! That would have killed me faster than having ice knives in my heart and that spell could kill a giant in seconds. I had intentionally picked a college far away from home because I wanted a different life. I wanted to explore and spread my wings, and I wouldn't get that by staying in a college full of witches and wizards.
After enduring middle school and high school, I didn't want my college life to be as miserable as the past few years I'd lived.
I wanted... normalcy.
I wanted a school full of lively humans and not witches whose only goal in life is to find out who among them was stronger and might be the next coven leader.
I wanted a normal life. Well, I didn't mind having my powers though which reminded me of the situation I was in.
"Come on, mum. I was only curious. You told me a curious witch is a powerful one."
Yeah, Sabrina, keep heaping all the blames on your mother.
She smiled. "I will forgive you for this but don't you ever try that again. You know you are moving far away from home and where you are going to is a different world from here. You won't be forgiven there if they find out what you are."
"Yes, mum." I sighed.
She had been telling me to be careful since I got the admission letter.
"Don't ever forget the rules, girl."
"Do not use magic to hurt someone else. Don't hex anyone no matter how matter how annoying they are. Don't let your identity as a witch be known. Don't offer your magic for money. Don't befriend a vampire."
"Yes, mum." I sighed, bored of the lessons I had heard almost a billion times.
"Don't ever be friends with a vampire." She repeated as if the other rules weren't important.
"Noted, mum. I won't be friends with a vampire." I repeated.
Anything to put her mind at ease and make her forget punishing me.
Where was I going to find a vampire anyway?
They avoided my race as much as we did.
Sabrina's POV
"Hey, I'm Lucinda." The red-haired girl smiled as she walked into the room, tugging a heavy luggage behind her.
I had been so excited to leave home that I got to my dorm exactly on the day of resumption, which meant that I had the room to myself before my roommate who just showed up got in.
"I'm Sabrina." I smiled back at her, hoping she was someone I could get along with.
I knew mum said not to use magic at school but if she was intolerable, I wasn't above casting a spell on her to request for a transfer to another room. I hoped she wouldn't make me do that because she seemed interesting.
"Sabrina, nice to meet you."
"Me too." I grinned, hoping I would be able to say that a week later.
Twenty minutes later, I was relieved to find out I wouldn't need a new roommate. Lucinda was as nice as she seemed interesting. She could talk a lot though but I didn't mind it one bit. I preferred her chatter to the boredom and bullying I got from the girls back at home.
"Are you going to the party next weekend?"
"Which party?" I asked, confusion written all over my face.
She chuckled. "Really? You've been here for two days and you don't know about the welcome party? I haven't even gotten to school but know about the party. Come on, where have you buried your nose in since you were here?"
Uh, would she freak out if I told her I had my nose buried in spell books?
Yeah, I eventually stole mum's spell book. I was sure she would have found out what I did but she couldn't march here to get it back, which was a huge flex for me.
I was about to find out that my roommate was way more social than I could deal with.
"Tell me about it already, Lucy, and stop gloating about it." I groaned, rolling my eyes in a comical way for her to know I was teasing her.
She grinned and jumped on my bed, eager to share the gist. "Don't mind me for teasing you. I wouldn't have known about the party too if my elder sisters hadn't schooled here. They told me about this whole welcome party thing for freshmen and I can't wait to experience it. Based on their reports, it's always fun and you get to make out as much as you want."
"Make out?" I gasped, pretty sure my eyes were bulging out.
She had a huge grin on her lips as she nodded. "Yes. You look like you are about to pass out from a heart attack."
Yeah, probably because my heart was beating too fast at the moment.
She continued. "What else do you with your date when the mood calls for it at a party? Everyone has to attend the party with a date and I think that is what makes the party more fun than the others."
"But we are freshmen. Where are we meant to find a date for the party? One you want to make out with?"
She snorted. "Where can't you find a date you want to make out with? This is college, Sabrina. There are a lot of hot dudes and chicks out here and that is why the party is being held next weekend, which is a week after the start of lectures. You have plenty of opportunities like classes, library and other places to find someone cute enough to be your date and if you can't after that one week, that means you've got no game and don't deserve to be at the party."
I sighed. That was a lot to take in.
"Are you going to the party?"
I wanted to. After all, new experiences were one of the reasons I decided to school here.
"I will see what I can do about it. I don't have a date yet."
She scoffed and waved her hand in the air. "Please, Sabrina. I know we are going to the party together. You are an attractive young lady and I bet you will get snatched up before the week is over."
"Thanks for the vote of confidence."
"It wasn't a vote, it was a fact. I've got good eyes, after all."
I smiled. I believed I was going to like this girl.
On the first day of lectures, Lucinda made a fuss over my dressing that I felt like I was being married off. According to her, I had one week to score a hot guy for the party. She already found a boyfriend within the past two days and I was amazed.
That girl was freaking impressive.
I always had to get to school early to avoid walking past the bullies in high school so it wasn't a surprise I was among the early few to get to class. I could pick the seat I wanted so I picked one at the back row.
I watched as the others filed in, in groups of twos and threes.
Wow! Some people already got besties within a week of being in school?
I was starting to feel like I didn't have any game and didn't like that thought.
I wanted my own bestie too. Scratch that. I had Lucinda. I reminded myself that she had a boyfriend and wouldn't give me her attention as much as a bestie would.
I realized I wanted my own boyfriend. I wanted someone to go to the party with, someone hot enough to kiss and make out with all day, someone stable enough to dream of the future about.
As soon as I had that thought, a boy walked into the lecture hall and it was as if Mother Nature had read my mind and made my fantasy boy into reality. He was so hot I would have been drooling if I didn't remember that I was in public and needed to keep my cool.
I loved him already.
Damn, Sabrina. Chill. Be cool.
I couldn't be cool. I couldn't keep my eyes off him. He was everything I'd always wanted in a boy. I could kiss him for days without getting turned off.
I watched as he glanced around the room, looking for an empty place to sit.
Please, let him come here. I prayed in my heart, hoping he wouldn't pick the remaining other two seats left.
Mother Nature seemed to be residing in my mind and I almost passed out with how fast my heart was beating as I watched him walk over to where I was.
"Can I sit here?" He asked, standing beside me.
Of all the goodness in the world. Could someone pass me a fan, please? Why was it hot in here?
I felt like the sea witch at the moment and that was a nasty thought to have as a real witch. My clan didn't like sea witches because of how cunning and evil they were. There was something about the boy though that made me want to be bad and daring, and do the impossible.
I wanted to capture and lock his voice in a bottle so I could listen to it all night. All sorts of wicked thoughts ran through my mind as I stared at him and I knew I wanted to do more than kissing with him if we ever went to that school party together.
I thought of how I was going to ask him to go to the party with me before the lecture was over.
"Hello," he called again, his voice sending chills through my veins.
I realized I hadn't given him a response and snapped out of my folly. I swallowed and cleared my throat before responding. I didn't want the poor guy to know I had undressed him a million times in my mind.
"Sure. You can sit." I said, gesturing to the chair.
"Thank you." He grinned.
As he bent to sit down, his arm accidentally brushed mine and I went still as chills went down my spine.
This time, it wasn't because of lust, it was dread.
I sighed as I shifted away from him, hating the feeling of hurt and disappointment crashing through me. I should have known Mother Nature wasn't on my side.
Foolish of me to hope that she was.
My hot fantasy boy was a vampire.
Lucky me.
Sabrina's POV
Why did I ever think I was about to get lucky? I was a girl who disobeyed her mother and stole her book. I guessed Mother Nature wanted to punish me for being a thief.
Why was he here anyway?
I knew vampires existed. I had learned of them the moment I could say my name out loud. I just didn't think a vampire would be here. Just my poor luck that I had wanted a normal life free of the supernaturals and I picked a school with a vampire.
Was he the only vampire here?
Did he also come to live among the humans, have a normal life and be free of the supernatural world like I wanted?
Were there other vampires around?
What would I do if there were other vampires here?
It seemed like I was the only witch in college as I wanted but that meant I was defenseless if I ran into a group of vampires.
Oh! I hoped it wasn't a bad idea coming here.
Vampires are the enemies. My mother's voice screamed loud in my head and I winced, hating the brutal reminder of my reality.
Thankfully, the professor walked in and I got something to distract me from the hot boy beside me. Yeah, I still found him hot and I hated myself for that.
Sabrina, snap out of it. He is a vampire. He is the enemy.
Despite how engaging the class was and how hard I tried, I couldn't help myself from glancing at him. I couldn't help the need to gawk at him. I wanted to erase the memory of what I knew about him. I shouldn't have let his hand brush mine. I could have continued with my fantasy about him.
Snap out of it, Sabrina. He is a vampire.
I rolled my eyes at the voice in my head. I wanted to shout at it that I knew and didn't need a reminder. With the way I kept stealing glances at him though, I didn't think I knew well enough that he was a vampire.
I guess I couldn't blame the voice screaming in my head.
"Is that you?" He asked, tapping me on the arm.
I sucked in a breath at the contact, hating the flare of desire mixed with dread that ran through my veins. I shouldn't feel this way. I stared at him to know why he tapped me and sighed dreamily. He had eyes I could drown myself in.
It's because he is a vampire. My mother's voice screamed at me. I told you not to fall for a vampire, girl.
I shuddered at how loud the voice was, feeling like my mother was right beside me and screaming.
"What?" I asked, my voice sounding harsher than I intended.
"Is your last name Brooks?" He asked.
I went pale. How did he know that? Was he reading my mind already? What a nasty vampire. Mum was right. Vampires weren't meant to be trusted.
"How did you know that?" I narrowed my eyes at him.
"Because the professor is having a roll call. He called the name and I wonder if that is you since no one else responded to it."
I blushed at his explanation. I had lost attention in class a few minutes ago and I blamed him for that.
"Miss Sabrina Brooks."
I turned to the professor when I heard my name. "Present, sir."
He scowled at me before ticking my name on his register and I got that feeling that he had already called my name more than twice and was about to mark me as absent.
Way to go, Sabrina.
"Thank you." I muttered to him without looking at him.
I didn't even know what his name was but I figured it was a good thing. That might help me get over this insane and forbidden attraction quickly.
"Kael Blad." The professor called out.
"Present, sir." The boy beside me responded.
Kael? What a perfect name for him. It suited him well and I found myself calling it several times in my mind.
Blad? I should have guessed. That was another proof that he was a vampire but I didn't think that humans were going to make the connection.
They were only going to think he came from an ancient family, which he probably did. Vampires were as ancient as time.
He couldn't have been more obvious that he was a blood-sucking monster with Blad as a last name, just as having Brooks as my last name made it obvious that I was a witch and had immense relation to nature.
"I'm Kael. Nice to meet you, Sabrina."
I went tense when I realized that he was trying to make conversation with me which was what any normal college student would have done with his seat partner, except that he wasn't a normal college student.
He was a vampire. Someone I should never be involved with.
Day one was a bust. I hoped I found someone during the remaining four days to go to the party with. I would love to go with him though. It was a shame I couldn't.
He is a vampire, Sabrina. My mother's voice screamed at me again. Remember the rules, girl. Don't you ever fall for a vampire.
I noticed he was staring at me and realized he was waiting for my response. My throat felt dry.
What was I supposed to say in response? It would have been easy to say it was nice to meet him if he wasn't a vampire.
Why did he have to be a vampire? That was what I wanted to say instead.
"See you all next class." The professor announced.
Without a word, I shoved my books into my bag and ran out of the hall.
