Chapter One
From Nathan's point of view.
You can actually tell and feel when you are starting to fade away from someone. The conversations get shorter, less meaningful and less exciting.
You can feel the wall that's coming up between you two and then in the end, you are back to being strangers. How weird and unbelievably fast the night changes.
In every relationship, there comes a point when the damage is too much and no matter how good it once was, the memories can't sustain you.
Love they say is a beautiful thing. While getting married to the woman you love is the best feeling in the world.
I used to believe in this fallacy not until I got married to my soon-to-be ex-wife Daniella.
I honestly used to think that my marriage would be blissful and full of ecstasy like every other successful marriage out there. But I guess I was too carried away by the illusion of the saying that, true love never ends. Lol. What a fool and a dreamer I was. Because now I know that getting married in the first place doesn't guarantee you will be together forever.
As I sit here wallowing in pain, I am forcefully reminded of the events that led to me feeling this way.
And no matter how hard I try to resist these memories from flooding into my head, I am forced once again to remember the first day I saw and fell in love with Daniella.
I can still vividly picture her charming smile that caught my attention on the very first day we met at a supermarket. And yeah, it was love at first sight for me. And everything that followed after, were all memories that once used to make me feel butterflies in my stomach.
But here I am today trying to figure out how it got to this point and where I got it wrong. And that's because everything happened so fast.
Who is to be blamed for all these? Me? My best friend Caleb? Or my wife Daniella? Nevertheless, I can't push the blame on anyone because it takes two to destroy a marriage.

Chapter Two
(From the writer's point of view)
It was a bright Saturday morning at Saint Andrew's Parish. The church was filled with lots of wedding guests. Ranging from family members, friends, colleagues and well-wishers who were all present to witness the holy matrimony of the newest couple in town. In persons of Nathan age 30 and Daniella age 26.
Nathan saw Daniella for the first time in a supermarket and fell in love with her at first sight. And after exchanging contacts, they both began talking on the phone and texting each other until Daniella finally gave in to Nathan's relationship proposal after 2 whole months of constant love profession from Nathan.
And all through their years of dating, Daniella had not for once regretted her decision of accepting to date Nathan. And that's because Nathan was a cool, considerate, caring, and kind-hearted young man, who was ready to go out of his way to please his woman. And because of his sweet personality, Daniella didn't think it twice to say yes when he finally asked her to marry him after 3 years of dating.
At exactly 11 am, the officiating priest after a short sermon summoned the couple to stand before the altar where they stood facing each other with gladness in their hearts.
Then facing the congregation, the Priest asked,
"If any one of you have or know of any reason why these two should not be joined in holy matrimony, then speak up now or forever hold your peace," He said.
Hearing this, some of the guests started murmuring and looking over their shoulders.
And when no one stepped forward, the priest then proceeded with the marriage rites. He handed a booklet containing the marriage vow to the bride who held it in her left hand. Then with her right hand raised, she began.
"Today, in the presence of God, our friends, families, and well-wishers who are currently present to witness this union, I Daniella Gozie take you Nathan Igwe to be my lawfully wedded husband. Giving you everything I am and everything I will grow to be. I promise to be true to you in good times, in sickness and in health. I promise to love and honour you all the days of my life. And I vow to be your truest friend. I promise to share your hopes and dreams while working to help you achieve the goals you hold dear. I promise to always be right by your side and to listen patiently with an open heart. I pledge to you my fidelity, honesty, submission, compassion and forgiveness. I vow to love you always, no matter what the future holds. I will be your most loyal confidant and friend, and your loving wife because you are my heart and my soul now and forever. This I solemnly vow" She said smiling helplessly.
Hearing this, the crowd applauded in great excitement. Then handing the booklet to Nathan, he also vowed.
"Today, in the presence of God, our friends, families, and well-wishers who are currently present to witness this union, I Nathan Igwe take you Daniella Gozie to be my lawfully wedded wife. I pledge to you my fidelity, honesty, loyalty, compassion and forgiveness. I vow to love you always, no matter what the future holds. I will be your most loyal confidant and friend, and your loving husband because you are my heart and my soul now and forever. This I solemnly vow" He said.
After a round of applause from the congregation, the priest then proceeded to bless the couple. Then joining their hands together, he asked,
"Do you Daniella Gozie take Nathan Igwe to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until death do you part?" He asked.
Then with an affirmative nod and a charming smile, Daniella responded,
"Yes, I do," She said smiling brightly at Nathan who couldn't stop blushing from ear to ear.
Then turning to Nathan, the priest asked the same question and Nathaniel responded,
"Yes, I do"
After hearing their responses, the priest then motioned the ring bearer to step forward. Then taking the rings from the ring bearer, the priest blessed them and handed one to Daniella who held Nathan's left hand and with a smile on her face, she began.
"I give you this ring today as a sign of my love and faithfulness. In the name of the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen," She said slipping the ring into Nathan's finger. And he equally did the same.
Then with a bright smile, the priest said,
"With the power bestowed on me, I hereby pronounce you man and wife. Congratulations. You may kiss your bride" He said.
Then without further ado, Nathan slowly unveiled his beautiful bride and pulled her into a kiss which got the entire congregation clapping, taking pictures and videos in excitement.
(Five years later)
Nathan had returned from work that Thursday evening only to meet his wife sobbing on the couch that was in the living room.
"Sweetheart?" Nathan called quickly dropping his suitcase and his car keys on the centre table.
Then with curiosity and concern on his face, he sat next to her and asked,
"Babe, what's wrong? You don't look okay. Why are you crying?" Nathan asked worriedly.
But Danielle remained silent. Then folding her arms, she looked away breaking into more tears.
Seeing her in such a condition made Nathan restless and worried sick. He quickly placed his palm on her cheek and gently turned her face towards his.
Then staring steadily into her eyes, he asked,
"My love. What is it? Why are you crying? You know how much I love and adore you don't you? And I'm sure you are fully aware that seeing you in such a situation only breaks my heart. So please, open up to me. Tell me what exactly is going on" Nathan said pleadingly.
Then with a deep breath, Daniella wiped off her tears and began,
"Nathan. This is the fifth year of our marriage. Yet, there is nothing to show for it. For the past five years, I've been battling depression all because of my inability to bear a child. Nathan when exactly will this change? When exactly will I become a mother like all my friends who got married after me? I'm seriously losing it, Nathan. The side talks, the mockery, the insults and humiliation is seriously beginning to get to me. And at this point, I don't even know what to do anymore. Like, what exactly is my offence? What wrong have I committed in time past to warrant such punishment from God?" She lamented all at once.
Nathan who was suddenly weakened by her words, didn't know what to do or say. Rather, he slowly took off his hand from her cheek and coldly readjusted himself on the couch.
Then burying his head in his palms with a deep sigh, he said,
"I'm truly sorry Daniella. I'm truly sorry" He apologised remorsefully.
Hearing this, Daniella shook her head in disagreement and said,
"Babe, why apologise when it's not even your fault? If there's anyone to apologise then it should be me. Because I failed in my duty and responsibility to bear you children. I really should be ashamed of myself" Daniella said fighting back tears.
Then sitting upright, Nathan took her hands and said,
"My love, this is not your fault in any way. So please stop pushing the blames on yourself because it really breaks my heart to see you do so" Nathan said.
"Then what would you rather have me do? I am just confused....."
Daniella was yet speaking when Nathan cupped her lips with his in a deep kiss that suddenly got her silent. Then pulling his lips away from hers, he cupped her cheeks in both palms. Then with a reassuring smile, he said,
"Babe, trust me. We will have a child of our own in due time. Okay?" Nathan asked.
Then with an affirmative nod, Daniella responded.
"Okay," She said giving a pathetic smile.
"Now, that's my baby girl," Nathan said wiping her tears.
Then pulling closer, he embraced Daniella and began rubbing her back with sadness in his eyes.
Later that night, Nathan who couldn't bring himself to sleep, quietly stepped out to have a drink with his best friend Caleb who was also his colleague and best man at his wedding five years ago.
Arriving at the bar, Caleb met Nathan staring helplessly at his cup of beer with both arms folded on the table while lost deep in thoughts.
He walked up to him and tapped him on the shoulder jolting Nathan back to reality.
"Oh my God!" Nathan exclaimed with his hand on his chest. Then turning to see Caleb, he quickly composed himself.
"Oh, you are here?" He asked with a sad smile.
"Y-e-s" Caleb responded with a look of curiosity and confusion.
Seeing how Nathan reacted, Caleb couldn't help but grab a seat for himself. Then facing Nathan, he asked,
"Nathan, is everything alright with you? I mean you look like you have a lot going on in your mind" Caleb said.
Then waving at the waiter who walked up to him, Caleb said,
"A bottle of beer, please. The same brand as his" He said pointing at Nathan's drink.
Then with a nod, the waiter left to get his order. Then facing Nathan, Caleb continued.
"Nathan, do you mind sharing what is it that made you call me out by this time of the night?" Caleb asked leaning in with his clasped hands resting on the table.
Then without a word, Nathan reached for his cup of beer and gulped it down his throat. Then placing the cup back on the table, he began refilling it again when the waiter returned with Caleb's order.
"Thank you," Caleb said taking the drink from the waiter.

After a long while of drinking in silence, Nathan finally spoke out.
"Caleb, what should I do?" He asked with sadness in his tone.
"I don't understand. What should you do about what exactly?" Caleb asked staring confusedly at him.
"My marriage" Nathan responded drinking from his glass cup.
"What happened to your marriage? Or, did something happen to your wife?" Caleb asked with curiosity.
Then slowly, Nathan shook his head, and responded,
"I wish that was the case. Then maybe there would have been a solution to the problem" Nathan said.
"Are you being serious right now? What could be worse than your wife getting into one problem or the other?" Caleb asked.
"Caleb, it's been five years since I and Daniella got married. And yet, we don't have a child of our own. This whole thing is beginning to get to my wife who has been so emotional these few days" Nathan said with sadness in his eyes.
"That's quite understandable. But I believe God will remember your wife in due time. I mean, this is one of the things you can't stress or force and you know it" Caleb said.
"You don't understand," Nathan said with a scoff that came from a place of sorrow. "Caleb, I'm afraid that, that won't be happening anytime soon"
"And what do you mean by that? Why will you even say such a thing?" Caleb asked.
"Caleb you don't get it. I am suffering from secondary infertility. As it stands now, I won't be able to impregnate my wife or any woman at all" Nathan revealed.
Hearing this, Caleb's jaw dropped immediately in shock.
"What! That's ridiculous. Since when?" Caleb asked in shock and disbelief.
"I found out a few months after my wedding. And for the past five years now, I have been working on restoring my fertility but all to no avail" Nathan revealed.
"Oh my goodness! This is really bad. How about your wife? Is she aware of this?" Caleb asked.
Then shaking his head, Nathan responded.
"Not yet. I told the doctor to keep it from her till I'm ready to tell her about it. But it hurts me to see her cry and blame herself for her inability to conceive for me all these years. Honestly, Daniella does not deserve any of this and it really hurts" Nathan said fighting back tears.
Caleb who was dumbfounded sat there searching for the right words to say to Nathan. And all he could say was,
"Wow! this is serious," He said looking confused.
Then quietly, he reached for his drink and began gulping it down his throat when Nathan gazed at him and said,
"But since I can't father a child, for now, I was thinking, how about you impregnate my wife?" Nathan asked staring at Caleb who almost choked on his drink.
He quickly dropped his drink and sat staring at Nathan with his eyes widened in shock.
"What!" Caleb finally managed to exclaim with shock and disbelief on his features.
"Yes, Caleb. Help me get my wife pregnant" Nathan said with a stern face.
"What!" Caleb finally managed to exclaim with shock and disbelief on his features.
"Yes, Caleb. Help me get my wife pregnant" Nathan said with a stern face.
"Nathan, have you suddenly gone nuts or something? How could you even come up with such a ridiculous request?" Caleb fumed standing to his feet in disbelief.
Then raising his voice, Nathan said,
"Yes, Caleb! I have gone nuts! I have lost my sense of reasoning and I'm currently losing my mind as we speak! Besides, it takes only a madman like me to ask his best friend to get his wife pregnant. Do you think it pleases me to make such a request to you? Believe me, you wouldn't be here trying to judge me If only you know how much pain and humiliation this ailment has caused me," Nathan fumed at Caleb, not minding if anyone was watching or overhearing him.
Listening to him, Caleb couldn't help but notice the pain and agony in his voice. And as such, he slowly sat back in his seat and heaved a sigh with his palm rubbing his forehead. Then in a calm tone, he asked.
"So, have you tried out other available options like adoption? Because I can't help but wonder why you think getting me to sleep with your wife is the best thing to do in a situation like this. I mean, this is your wife we are talking about here and not some random stranger" Caleb said.
"Don't you get it? this is the only way to retain my dignity and respect. Besides, you wouldn't want me going for adoption and letting the whole world know that I'm infertile right? Caleb, can you at least try putting yourself in my shoes? Because only then will you be able to see things from my perspective" Nathan said.
"But even at that Nathan. What you are asking of me is truly despicable, absurd and highly formidable. How do you expect me to face you tomorrow knowing full well that I have had a taste of your wife? Your lawfully wedded wife Nathan" Caleb said.
Hearing this, Nathan stood up from his seat and went to his knees.
"What are you doing?" Caleb whispered looking around to ensure that no one was looking their way.
Then with tears in his eyes, Nathan clenched his fist and said,
"Caleb, please help me. I know the gravity of what I am asking of you. But I have come to seek your help at the expense of my pride and dignity because this is the only way I can wipe off the shame that this ailment has brought upon me. Please, Caleb, I beg you in the name of whichever god you hold dear. Help save me from this slum. For I have failed as a man and as a husband to my wife who doesn't deserve all the pain and agony she's been going through for the past five years" Nathan pleaded with his eyes fixed on the ground in tears.
Then quickly, Caleb held him and helped him up. Then when he was finally seated, he said,
"Look, Nathan. What you asking of me is against my belief. And ordinarily, I'm not supposed to even put such a request into consideration. But because I know that if I were to be in this same condition, you won't hesitate to help me out. And for that reason, I will try giving your request a deep thought before giving you my final answer" Caleb said.
When Nathan heard this, he quickly reached for Caleb's hand and held it with tears in his eyes.
"Thank you so much, Caleb. And I'm sorry. I'm truly sorry for putting you in a tight situation. The truth is, never have I ever thought that I would one day come to you or anyone with such a ridiculous request. But here I am today doing the unbelievable. And believe me, it isn't easy seeking your help this way and that's because I truly love my wife and can't even stand another man talking to her let alone do that which I am asking of you" Nathan said with tears.
Then with a reassuring smile, Caleb placed his hand on his shoulder and said,
"Nathan. It's well. Everything will be alright soon" He said.
