Alexie's POV
I entered the grand hall of the Lunskye Pack after the MC announced my presence, taking in the atmosphere and the cheers around. Then my eyes fell on the man waiting on the stage.
Alpha Rafe Ryder.
Today, he would crown me as his Luna, the ceremony I'd looked forward to my entire life. Every day of my existence has resonated around this moment.
I gripped the paper in my hand. The test result I had just gotten from the doctor. But instead of being over the moon that I was finally carrying Rafe's child, the anger that was swirling in my bloodstream was enough to flush out the baby.
Nevertheless, I pulled myself together and stepped forward. And as I neared the stage, the MC went on speaking.
"Miss Alexie Brown as we all know is our beloved future Alpha's betrothal. Her resilience since young beside the Alpha despite her status as Omega, and how she'd trained to be the best female warrior in the Pack has shown us that she will be one of the best Lunas we would have."
While the MC spoke, my footsteps got heavier but I kept pushing myself forward, maintaining my gaze on the man waiting for me on the stage.
Rafe stared at me dotingly, a look that would have made butterflies flutter in my stomach before, but all I felt right now was the sickening feeling in my belly.
"You are beautiful, darling."
He chuckled softly, but I couldn't even offer a brief smile, and as he was starkly aware of the paper in my hand, he went on.
"Today, I will finally give you what you have always wanted. The Luna crown."
Oh yes, what I had always wanted, not what he was willing to give me from his heart.
Behind him, the Pack elders were present including his parents and mine. Everyone had anticipatory smiles.
I almost laughed at the irony of the situation, my fingers gripping the paper tighter.
Without warning, I raised a hand and slapped him, causing the entire hall to fall into a hushed silence.
"Are we even mates?"
I laughed bitterly, the silence-filled hall echoing with my voice.
For years, I had grown up sick and weak, and had literally ended up in the hospital every two weeks because of him. Despite my constant ailments, I had always overexerted myself to study and train hard. To become worthy of the Luna position someday yet nobody knew the cause of my constant ailments.
No!
They always knew.
The Pack doctor.
His parents.
But to save the girl he'd love from little, they only needed a worthless Omega to serve as her drug vessel.
Because of them my wolf never surfaced, and I was considered the weakest in the Pack. The mockery and ridicule were never-ending. Yet, I persevered because I believed that in a world where everyone either wanted to kill or take advantage of me, Rafe was my only anchor.
Unknowingly to me, he was the cause of my suffering.
Fighting back my tears, I faced him confidently, rage surging through me.
"I refuse to be your Luna, Rafe, and I, Alexie Brown, reject you as my chosen mate!"
Rejecting Rafe wasn't an easy thing for me, it was so painful but I had to endure the pain because the foolish me thought I had found a mate.
The silence was instantly replaced by whispers from the crowd
"Is she crazy?"
"No, I must be hallucinating."
Rafe was shocked and speechless, even his parents, as well as the Pack elders.
With nothing more to say, I turned to leave but Skipper entered the hall at that moment, looking pale and weak.
Her appearance would have made me pity her, I would have run to her and helped her up the stage or supported her to sit down, but all I could see was a liar and a betrayer.
With tears slowly streaming down her face, she knelt in front of me, her hands crossing my left leg.
"You have misunderstood the whole thing, Alexie, there is nothing between Rafe and me."
She sniffled, her red swollen eyes fixed on me.
"Believe me, Alexie,"
At that moment, it all made sense to me that I was the fool. For years, Skipper had always posed as Rafe's sister and my best friend, she had always fallen sick and was always in need of help and I was always there, willingly ready to donate bags of blood for her. Remembering how out of pity, I gave my bone marrow to save Skipper's life made me want to strangle her.
I laughed and asked, "If there's nothing between you, how come you're pregnant for him?"
People gasped and began murmuring. At that moment, Rafe rushed forward and protected Skipper. With a panicked look in his eyes, he handled her carefully and helped her up from the floor.
Why didn't I notice it before? Rafe had always done the same thing, always protecting Skipper like a mother wolf protecting her pups, but none of that made me suspicious of their relationship. I had thought it was only a brother's love.
"So what?"
Rafe thundered, his voice piercing the walls, sending the hall into deep silence.
"You are a worthless Omega, Alexie, and you should be grateful that I even thought to make you my Luna!"
Grateful?
No! They should be grateful that I saved his chosen mate's life for twenty years.
The fact that he didn't deny the accusation and even insulted me didn't surprise me a bit. In fact, I was happy that he'd shown his true colors.
My heart ached painfully that I was used, and played by the man who had promised to lift the earth for me. If only I knew that his promises were fake, I wouldn't have wasted my time with him, I would have stepped away to save myself from such humiliation long ago.
My palm subconsciously settled on my lower abdomen to feel the life growing inside me.
Thank goodness I found out before I became his Luna. Otherwise, tomorrow might have been the beginning of my death-and my unborn child's. Skipper would fall sick again, and they would expect me to sacrifice myself to save her.
I turned my back on them and stepped out of the grand hall, knowing fully well that Skipper's life would be horrible without me.
Alexie's POV
Pak!
My mother's hand connected with my face, sending an intense pain through my flesh.
I stepped back and stood firmly, staring at her in utter bewilderment.
"All these years, we have all looked forward to this day that Alpha Rafe would crown you as the future Luna. We've always wanted the best life for you and all you could do is humiliate and reject him in public?"
She yelled, her hands flying in the air.
But was that the only thing they saw in the scene or just what they wanted to catch a glimpse of? Didn't they see and hear the part where Skipper is pregnant for Rafe?
Actually, I was not surprised at all. My parents would do worse than that because their entire life had been built on sending their daughter off to the Alpha bloodline as a Luna so that their status would be raised from the lowest rank to the highest.
"Your father was promised to be the next training commander, Alexie..."
She fumed, lunging towards me. However, I didn't lift a step, I stayed where I was, waiting for whatever she wanted to do. I was no longer afraid of anything because the betrayal had taught me a great lesson.
"As far as I know, I am not the only daughter you've got."
My mum suddenly stopped in her tracks.
"You can send off Kiara to continue from where I stopped since the Alpha bloodline is what you are after!"
"Hey!"
My little sister, Kiara, snapped from the stairs.
"Do not include me in this, Alexie, I am not a drug vessel! By the way, didn't I warn you that Rafe was only using you?"
Of course she did, but what did my parents do? They punished her for telling me the truth. Now I was paying the price of being stupid.
She walked past me, hissing loudly.
"Deal with your pain alone, sister!"
Mum grabbed my hand fiercely, her grip burning my flesh.
"You are a disgrace to this Family, Alexie. Because of you, your father is on the sick bed right now. And you know what? He wants me to deliver this important message to you."
She released my hand, picked up a paper on the desk, and flashed it in my face.
"This is proof that you belong to this family but from today..."
She tore it into pieces then tossed them on my face.
"You are no longer our daughter! Go find another parent! Or go apologize to Rafe and we will consider you again!"
My heart ceased beating for a second and my entire body froze in shock. I never saw that coming. I didn't know they would do that to me.
After all the years of listening and doing all they wanted? Just because I rejected Rafe, they want nothing to do with me again.
Well, no problem with that. The world is big enough to accommodate everyone. If their wish is to cut ties with me, then it is welcome.
A subtle smile tugged at my lips as I collected myself.
"Thank you for all you've done for me, Mum, but even in my next life, I will never apologise to Rafe. So..."
I bent over and picked up the luggage that she had thrown at me earlier on.
"Goodbye."
I was deeply disappointed in my parents for choosing that cruel way to punish me. Weren't they the ones who had promised to love me until they ceased to breathe? Weren't they the ones who had showered me with love and affection? They even made me their favorite child.
So those were all because I would become the Pack's Luna someday and their status would be elevated.
As I walked through the busy street unsure of where I was going, whispers fell on my back. Whispers audible enough for my ears not to miss.
"Look how pathetic she is..."
"Alpha Rafe would have made a terrible mistake making her our Luna."
"She should be grateful that the Alpha's family welcomed her. Who is she? Just a weak Omega who shouldn't have a place in this pack in the first place."
"I wish the Alpha would banish her entire family from stepping foot into this pack."
"Thank goodness he crowned Miss Skipper as the future Luna before leaving the grand hall, she is more fit than this thing over here."
I wasn't a weak Omega, Rafe and my parents turned me into one.
I swallowed the lump in my throat and waved down a taxi to get away from the mockery and cruel words.
"Where to?"
The driver asked but I had no idea. I just wanted to get out of there, to leave the pack and go somewhere that would be safe for me.
"The train station."
I finally said after a thorough thought about it. And as the taxi drove away, I curcled my belly, sighing deeply.
No matter what, I must make it in life, give my baby a happy life, and live the life I have always imagined.
Rafe or no Rafe, I must win and when he comes begging, I would make sure to give him the taste of his own medicine.
Rafe's POV
Ever since Alexie stepped foot out of the grand hall, no one has heard from her. I had thought she would return to the mansion to at least pack her belongings, but she didn't.
My action earlier on wasn't intentional and a part of me feel bad for treating Alexie that way. Maybe I shouldn't have spoken those cruel words to her. I could have just pulled her to one side and explain to her what's really happening and what my relationship with Skipper is.
I even sent the bodyguards to turn the pack upside down yet none of them could find her. Worst, Skipper has been in the hospital for hours now, battling for her life, and even in critical condition, she wants to see Alexie-to apologize to her.
"What about the penthouse?"
I asked one of the bodyguards who went out in search of Alexie.
"There is no way she wouldn't be there. Bring her over here as fast as possible!"
After ending the call, I returned to the VIP ward Skipper was admitted to, my heart palpating inanticipation. But before entering the room, I inhaled and exhaled deeply to control my emotions so Skipper wouldn't have to be worried.
"Have you found her?"
Skipper asked, her voice laced with urgency. She looked so pitiful in the hospital gown, and her skin had turned paler in just a few hours.
I sat across the bed, took her soft delicate hands in mine, and gently tucked a few strands of hair behind her ear.
"Do not worry yourself, the bodyguards are trying their best."
Tears slowly flowed down her face, and her head dropped.
"This is all my fault."
She sobbed softly.
"Hey, it's fine, do not blame yourself."
I gently wrapped my arms around her shoulders and she pinned her head on my chest.
"If I hadn't gulped down that full cup of wine, we wouldn't have ended up in bed together and Alexie wouldn't have found out I am pregnant."
She gently pulled away from me, her eyes twice as swollen as they were at the grand hall.
"Please, Rafe, find Alexie and bring her to me. I want to explain the whole thing to her. She shouldn't blame you for this, I am at fault here and I am ready for any punishment she deems fit to instil on me."
Skipper's words made sense a lot. But I doubt Alexie would even listen to us. The only thing we should focus on is pleading with her to help save Skipper's life again.
"I will. Now, get some rest while I go out there to look for her."
After leaving the hospital, I was hooked in traffic and as I turned to the left side of the road, I caught a glimpse of someone who looked so familiar-someone similar to Alexie, sitting in a taxi, her back resting against the seat.
I didn't waste much time trying to figure out who that was, I tapped the driver and pointed to that car because the traffic light had just turned green.
"Follow that taxi."
Surprisingly, the taxi's driver sped up as if he knew we were following him and so did my driver. The more he increased the taxi's speed, the more speed my driver boosted until we caught up with them and blocked their way.
Quickly, I stepped out of the car and the moment I opened the door, a triumphant smile appeared on my face. For some reason, something snapped in my heart and I found myself sighing in relieve just for seeing her.
"You are coming with me."
I pulled her out of the car but she bit my hand, and yanked herself away from me, cursing.
"What do you want from me, betrayer? Already missed me? Let me guess..."
She folded her arms, then jabbed her jaw with a finger, one brow raised in mockery.
"Your mate has fallen sick and you need me to transfer my essence to her, correct?"
Well, she knows. She always knows that for me to appear in front of her looking that way could only mean that Skipper's health has deteriorated and her help is needed.
It always pains me whenever I smooth talk Alexie into donating her life to Skipper but I always have no choice. Whenever a drop of blood left her body, my soul weakens, and I always wished that would be the last donation. But Skipper's health wouldn't just improve.
"You are right, Skipper is in the hospital and you must..."
"Must?"
She cut me off, scoffing.
"I dare you to take me with you, Rafe!"
Her sudden rage shocked me to the point that I almost thought she might have been possessed by demons. The Alexie I knew wasn't that rough, she was so gentle, calm, and always heed to my words.
"If Skipper needs my blood, marrow, or essence to survive, then this is the day she will stop breathing because I am leaving for good and will never return!"
Alexie cannot leave, I must never allow that to happen.
"Just come home with me and I will explain the whole thing to you..."
She raised her hand, scoffing.
"I know that your life and Skipper's life is nothing without me, Rafe. And for your information, I am stepping away forever and when I return, be ready to crawl on your knees, begging for a second chance!"
