The bride-to-be was beaming with smiles. She looked very radiant in her wedding dress. Her name is Tracey. She was very happy to be getting married to the biggest and most famous CEO in the country. She was getting married to Jace Sullivan, who was the heir to the Sullivan companies and also every woman's dream.
"Congratulations! Tracey. You look very beautiful," complimented her friend, Emma, who had accompanied her to the designer store to pick a wedding dress. Her wedding was in two days.
" Thanks," Tracey replied, broadening her smile. It was like a dream come true. She had always dreamt of being the wife of a famous, powerful, and rich man. Jace had all these qualities and above all, he was very handsome. It didn't matter to her that he didn't like her. That was the least of her worries. All she wanted was to lay her hands on wealth, power, and social status.
"Grandfather Liam," Jace called out quietly. Liam Sullivan turned and glared at him. His old, yet sharp eyes seemed to bore right into the younger man's soul. Every other person would have shivered but Jace stood his ground.
"What is it?" Grandfather Liam asked when he was done scrutinizing him.
"I don't want to marry her," he said calmly. His grandfather hit his stick hard on the ground and thundered,
"You have no say. I have decreed and it must be obeyed. Get out of my sight. Quick."
Jace was unmoved. "But grandfather, I obeyed you and found a girlfriend when you said I was rumored to be gay. I didn't love her. I did it to please you. Now, you have brought someone else for me to marry. Why grandfather? Tell me, why?" he replied trying his best to keep calm.
Grandfather Liam stood up in anger and hit him with his stick.
"Are you questioning me? How dare you?"
"No, grandfather. I am not. Everything I did, I did it for you. I have always obeyed you. But not anymore. I have my heart for someone else. It's neither Charlotte nor Tracey. Neither will it be anyone you say is arranged for me. I am not getting married to anyone and that's final. Anderson is your grandson too. He can marry her," he retorted losing his temper.
"Be prepared to lose your inheritance to him too," Grandfather Liam said in response. Jace flashed him a death glare, picked up his car keys, and walked off in anger.
Jace Sullivan was the most beloved grandson of Liam Sullivan. Jace was high and mighty but he never disobeyed his grandfather. His grandfather was one person he obeyed despite all odds.
Jace sat in his car seething in anger.
"Be prepared to lose your inheritance to him too," his grandfather's words kept ringing in his ears. Anderson was his stepbrother and greatest rival. He would be a bitter and sore loser if he lost his inheritance to Anderson. He was determined to disobey his grandfather this once and not get married but he couldn't lose his inheritance. Lost in thought and worry, he didn't realize the traffic light had shone red. When he realized, he was almost jumping the traffic. He quickly matched his brakes but there was no response.
What? What was going on? He had gone out with that car earlier that day and he was sure it was in good condition. He didn't have time to think or question himself further as he collided head-on with a roadblock and darkness descended on him.
A few hours later, all news headlines carried the details.
"THE FAMOUS CEO OF SULLIVAN COMPANIES INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT."
Although Jace survived the accident with no serious injury, he lost his sight.
"Clash," the paintbrush fell off her hands as tears poured down her face.
"Why must it be me?" she wailed. Her father and stepmother had decreed and declared that she was going to marry Jace Sullivan, the heir to the Sullivan company.
"Even my paint brushes are weeping with me. It should have been Tracey, not me. Mummy, where are you?" Marvis cried all the more. Her mother died a few years after she was born. Her parents were not able to have another child after her and within that period, the family business was in shambles. Poor Marvis was blamed and considered a bad luck in the family. Her father got married again and together, they made life miserable for Marvis.
"I will give you one million dollars and you will be out of this house. Take the money and fulfill this. You must marry Jace," her father, Bennet Lewis said, giving no room for a counter opinion.
"But, it should have been Tracey, not me. You all chose Tracey for this great position. Why turn the tables now? Why father?" Marvis protested.
"That is because my dearest daughter, Tracey, deserves better," Bennett answered. His words hit Marvis like an arrow that set out to strip her of her ego. If Tracey deserved better, then what about her? Why will she be the one to go now? Now that he had lost his sight and was handicapped?
"One million dollars?" she asked her father.
" Yes. One million dollars."
One million dollars. That sum would go a long way to help her life. She could broaden her art business and fend for herself from there. She would also be fulfilling her mother's dying request.
Marvis stood in front of the Jace family mansion. She was now the wife of Jace Sullivan. The arranged marriage between the two families, Lewis and Sullivan has been accomplished.
She took deep breaths to reassure herself. She knocked on the door of Jace's room and opened it. She moved aside just in time to escape being hit by a glass flying in her direction.
"Ahhhhhh!" she screamed in surprise.
"Get out", a voice roared furiously. She looked up and saw a stunningly handsome man seated at the foot of the bed, glaring at her. This was her supposed husband, the man that had originally been arranged for Tracey when he was in his full glory.
When Jace realized he hadn't heard the door open again, his muscles tightened and he screamed again, this time louder and more furiously,
"I said get out."
Marvis was scared, so she quickly made for the door. She touched the handle and turned it left. There was a click and the door was shut. She was trapped inside.
Beads of sweat broke out on her forehead. She couldn't be trapped in here, could she? Jace too had also heard the sharp click. His frown deepened and his face twisted in contempt.
"Is locking yourself in here with me one of your dirty tricks to seduce me?"
Marvis was taken aback.
"Seduce him? Why will she ever think of doing such?" She mused sardonically.
"If that is what you are after, let me tell you now, you have failed. How much did my grandfather give you that made you still marry a handicapped man like me?" Jace probed further. Marvis was still silent. She only knew about the one million dollars her father had given her and nothing about her father and his grandfather.
" Have you gone deaf and dumb as well, you disgusting gold digger," he bellowed.
"I don't know anything about that," Marvis answered calmly.
"Huh? You are not Tracey. It's you, Marvis?" Jace asked, recognizing the voice.
"Yes. It is me", she responded calmly.
Jace was surprised to know that Marvis was the one married to him and not her sister, Tracey.
"Now, I am certain that you are indeed a gold digger in search of a gold mine. You decided to marry me in your sister's stead and also seduce me too? Are you in so much hurry to get into my bed that you had to lock the door? Tell me, how much were you paid to do this?" he said spitefully.
"Can you stop all this nonsense, Master Jace?" Marvis responded in anger. She had been trying to keep her cool and take it easy with Jace. She had a tender heart and she pitied the handicapped man but he was already making her lose patience. Jace was too stunned at her courage to reply.
"I am here to take care of you and I won't have you speak to me that way," she finished.
"I do not need your care," he sneered.
Marvis ignored him completely and looked around the room. It was a small room and she felt it didn't quite befit his status. Or did he confine himself here because he was blind? She didn't quite understand. She looked at the floor and saw broken pieces of glass and food poured around the floor. She quickly picked up the glass pieces to avoid anyone accidentally stepping on them.
Blood dripped from the little cut on his fingers. Marvis saw it and shivered. Grandfather Liam had put her in charge of Jace. He had also handed her the responsibility of taking care of him in general. If he didn't look okay by the following day, she would be in trouble.
" Master Jace, where can I get a first aid kit? You have a cut."
"I thought I had made it clear to you that I don't need your damn care?"
Marvis suppressed the urge to punch him hard in the face.
"You should be nicer to me now, Master Jace. I will be taking care of you from now."
" Are you mocking me?" he asked bitterly.
"Of course not. I am only stating what is true. You should not always misunderstand me. By the way, how do I open the door? I need a servant to clean up this mess on the floor."
Jace pretended not to hear her. Marvis rolled her eyes at him. It was nice he couldn't see her.
She went to the door and after a series of trials and errors, the door eventually opened. She smiled broadly and heaved a sigh of relief. She stepped out and went in search of the senior servant, Esther. She saw her in the kitchen dishing out orders to the other servants.
"Excuse me, madam Esther," Marvis called politely. Esther turned and replied,
"Yes, how may I help you?"
"I need a first aid kit," she said.
" For?" came the reply.
"Master Jace. I need it for him. He has a cut."
"Alright. But the kit is not here right now. You will take it tomorrow," Madam Esther replied.
Marvis was surprised.
"What do you mean? He has a cut and..." Marvis protested.
Madam Esther gave her a dry look and said,
"It's not here at the moment. You will treat him tomorrow. Excuse me." She turned and went back to what she was doing.
"Why the attitude?" Marvis wondered.
It was night and Marvis sat on the sofa in her pyjamas. The weather was cold and the sofa was uncomfortable. The only blanket in the room was with Jace and there was no way he would let her come close to his bed.
A teardrop, followed by another ran down her face and soon, they fell freely and she cried in silence.
Her life had always been a mess. All her life, she had always dreamt and hoped for a happy marriage. But now, marrying and spending the rest of her life with someone who loves her was out of the picture and off the table. She was stuck to this beast for life.
When Tracey refused to continue with the marriage, no one questioned her. As usual, they all respected her opinion. Her father couldn't refuse Liam Sullivan's marriage proposal as he knew the consequences too well. Moreover, that was a rare opportunity, and hence, the mantle fell on Marvis.
That evening, she was in her room painting when a servant came in to announce that her father summoned her. Painting was all she knew how to do. Her mother loved art and instilled that love in her. Her mother always wished for her to be an artist, a renowned one. After her mother's death, no one cared about her and didn't want to hear anything about art from her. It was only one boy who did. Although he bullied her often at that time, he still cared for her.
"Yes, Father," Marvis answered when she got to the sitting room.
"Here", her stepmother, Shirley said, placing a wedding gown in her hands.
Marvis looked on, flabbergasted.
"You are going to get married to Jace Sullivan in two days," Shirley broke the news to her without mincing words.
"But why..." Marvis opened her mouth to question.
" No buts," Shirley said sternly.
"Be gone. Get out of my sight and prepare for your wedding and new home."
Marvis recalled this and her tears flowed all the more. She had always wanted an elaborate wedding with the man of her dreams but she didn't even get to have any wedding at all. Her only consolation was the one million dollars she was going to get from her parents. She would use it to open her art gallery as her late mum always wanted.
Marvis heard a "crank." She felt she was going to break her neck on the little and uncomfortable sofa. She was also freezing. She couldn't get a cold. She wiped her tears and stood up. She walked gingerly to Jace's bed and called out,
"Master Jace, are you asleep?"
"It's none of your business. Don't disturb me," he answered flatly.
"Can...can...I sleep on the bed, please? The sofa is too small and I'm freezing. I promise I won't do anything. Can I please?"
Jace turned to the other side and covered himself properly. It was a silent indication for her to get lost.
"Master Jace, I might break my neck on that sofa. I won't do anything, I will sleep at the farthest end. I promise", she pleaded further.
" Don't bother me", the man on the bed responded nonchalantly.
Everyone had slept but Marvis was wide awake. She had to abandon her difficult life, to a more difficult one.
Having stayed awake half of the night, coupled with the cold and uncomfortable sofa, Marvis woke up late.
Jace was still lying on his bed. She couldn't say if he was asleep or awake.
"Good morning Master Jace", she greeted but there was no response. He either didn't hear her, maybe he was still sleeping or pretended not to hear her as usual. She stretched herself and went into the bathroom.
She was done some minutes later.
" Master Jace, let me head downstairs for breakfast ".
" Mmm", he hummed a response to her surprise. She opened the door and went downstairs.
"Good morning Mother", she greeted his stepmother, Tessy.
" Morning my dear, how are you?", she asked smiling. Marvis was happy for the friendly welcome.
"I am fine mother", she replied.
Madam Esther gave orders to the junior servants and brought breakfast to the table. It was a simple meal of spaghetti with fried eggs. They had a glass of juice each to accompany the breakfast. Breakfast was set for five but it was just her and Tessy at the table. She got the answers to her unasked questions when she saw a young man descending the stairs. Close behind him were a young girl and a boy. Mrs Tessy had three kids. Anderson was the first. Kendra was next and Felix was the last and naughtiest.
"Good morning Mother", Anderson greeted
" Morning son. How was your night? I hope you slept well?", she asked nicely.
"Very well Mother", he answered and turned to Marvis. He smiled broadly at her and said,
" Hello. I'm Anderson. Nice to meet you", and stretched forth his hand for a handshake. The other two kids pretended not to notice her. Marvis could feel their death glare from a distance. She knew they didn't like her already. But she was happy for the warm welcome she had gotten from his mother and Anderson. She was sure she would enjoy her new home a bit.
Everyone observed good table manners and ate in silence. Anderson spoke up first.
"Marvis, how are you seeing your new home?"
" Well. I just arrived. I am yet to settle down fully. But I believe I will like it", she replied and smiled lightly.
"Mother, can I have some food to send up to Master Jace please?", she asked Mrs Tessy. Mrs Tessy froze momentarily and quickly covered up with a smile.
" You don't need to worry. The maids have already taken care of that "
"Alright Mother", she finished and went back to her food. Mother and son exchanged glances and said no word.
Marvis finished her breakfast and was going back upstairs. She needed to hurry so that she could meet her parents at home. She had to collect her balance of five hundred dollars. They had paid her part payment and were to complete it that day. She was almost at the door when she heard a low cry of pain from inside. It was low but she heard it. She opened the door and saw Jace in the bathroom. Again, there was food spewing on the floor. She rushed to the bathroom and saw that he had injured himself mistakenly. He had probably hit his head somewhere and blood dripped from the cut. He turned to walk out and he staggered. He nearly fell but for the timely intervention of Marvis. She quickly supported him. Jace felt his body stiffen.
" I am sorry", Marvis apologized and released him immediately. Jace said nothing. She handed him a tissue to clean off the blood. She didn't want to hurt his ego by helping him do that.
She left the bathroom and looked again at the food on the floor. It was not what they had that morning. It also seemed to have gone bad.
Does he always get little to eat? And why does he eat something less sumptuous and different from the other family members?
"Master Jace, do I get you something else to eat?", she asked in concern. When she didn't get a response from him, she decided to go and get him something regardless.
Jace sat on his bed in surprise. He didn't understand why Marvis cared for him when everyone else treated him with contempt. He knew for sure that even the servants had no regard for him now. He was somehow pleased with her.
Marvis got to the kitchen and met Madam Esther.
" Excuse me, please. Can I have some food for Master Jace please? ", she pleaded.
" Food has been sent to him", was the reply.
"Spoilt food!", Marvis yelled within.
" Yes. I mistakenly spilled it", she responded.
"Well, there is no more food", Madam Esther replied.
" What? Does your master always get little to eat? And are you saying he will have to go hungry this morning?", she questioned.
"Well, he always throws the food away. And we only give him little", Madam Esther hissed.
" But, what will he eat this morning? ", she asked again.
" I don't know miss ", madam Esther replied.
Marvis decided to go directly to Mrs Tessy. She was in her room, painting her nails when Marvis entered. Marvis explained everything to her and she could swear she noticed a change in the woman's facial expression. Before she could reply, there was a soft knock and Anderson came in.
" What is the matter? ", he asked.
" She said she mistakenly spilled Jace's food and Esther said there is no food left", Mrs Tessy explained.
"Well, let her make him something else", Anderson suggested.
" Oh yes. That should be the solution. Call me Esther", she said dismissing Marvis. Marvis who was bothered about the change in her facial expression as well as the bit of hostility from Esther decided to tread carefully. She went off and called Esther who followed her immediately.
"Yes ma", she answered as soon as she entered the room.
" You will make arrangements and give her some foodstuffs. She will be in charge of preparing his meals. That would be better", Mrs Tessy said and turned to Marvis.
"She will send the things to you. You may leave now"
"Thank you Mother", she answered and went out of the room.
"That girl is something else. She is going to be a threat to our plans. We must find a way to silence her" Mrs Tessy said.
"Give her more time, let's watch her more and we will know what to do with her", Anderson added.
What they did not know was that Marvis was behind the door, eavesdropping!
