Brendan is very happy today. The company where he applied for the job finally gave him an answer to his job application and they will give him the opportunity for an interview next week.
Brendan whistled all the way home from the bowling alley where he'd been spending time with Jake and Arshan.
They gather to celebrate farewell to Arshan who is about to move to Dubai as he has accepted a job there.
Brendan received a call from Mrs Amy Loewn--head of the personnel division where he applied for the job just as he was raising a beer to toast Arshan.
His house garage was empty when Brendan arrived. Brendan parked his car, a shiny black SUV on the sidewalk in front of his yard. He might leave again soon.
"Mom?" called Brendan as he hung his jacket in the cupboard behind the door. He saw his mother's shoes in the hall.
"I'm here," said a voice from the kitchen.
Brendan came into the kitchen and saw his mother, Sheryn Dawn--that was her maiden name and now it has changed to Sheryn Forbeen When six years ago she married David Forbeen.
Brendan's father--Greg Ashton, died eleven years ago. At that time Brendan was only seven years old.
Sheryn was stirring something like dough in a large bowl. She looked up when Brendan came in and smiled broadly. "Hi, honey. Having fun with Jake and Arshan?"
Brendan sat on the bar stool in front of the counter. "Hm. Arshan is leaving the day after tomorrow. We just played bowling for a while and drank at Uncle Kay's club. Why are you at home, Mom? Don't you have class tonight?"
Sheryn is a yoga instructor at a wellness center downtown. "No. My class is being diverted tomorrow because the head of the health center will review the classes that were reported leaked a few days ago."
Brendan pointed to the basin. "What did you do? Its for pizza?"
"Ah, this is dough for bread. I'm going to make mutton curry patties. I got the recipe from Mrs. Prasad."
Brendan nodded. His tongue was itching to immediately tell his mother about the job. However, he had to hold back because he wasn't too sure yet. He still had interviews to go through, so he'd better hold off on the good news until he's confirmed that he's got the job.
"Dad's not home yet?" asked Brendan, chewing on a piece of raw carrot he'd taken from the bowl. It was only in the last three years that he called David Dad.
"He's working overtime because tomorrow he has a project to present before the board of directors."
David is an architect and works for the family firm, Forbeen Engineering and Co.
"Where's Wyland? I haven't seen him in two days."
Sheryn put the spoon in her hand and looked thoughtful. "I wanted to ask you about that," said Sheryn. "I think, for the past few days, Wyland has looked gloomy and doesn't talk much. He also doesn't eat as much as usual and often locks himself in his room."
"Hm. I wasn't really aware of that," said Brendan.
Wyland is his half-brother. David took Wyland with him when he married Sheryn. Their age difference is three years and they are not close because at first Brendan was always jealous and thought Wyland would take his mother because Wyland didn't have a mother. His mother died in an accident when Wyland was three years old.
"Maybe he has a lot of work to do. He's still on Dad's project at their office, right?"
Wyland was also an architect and worked under his father at the same company.
"That's it. According to your father, Wyland didn't join the new project because he was needed more in the previous project and so far it's been smooth and Wyland's job is perfect."
"Maybe he has a problem with his girlfriend."
"Yes. Yes. It could be. I always wondered who his girlfriend was because he never told us."
"Don't be nosy, Mom," Brendan said, standing up. "I'm going to my room first. Talking about girlfriends, it reminds me, haven't contacted Lyla all day."
"Give her my regards and invite her to dinner here sometime. She hasn't been here in a long time."
Brendan gave a thumbs up as he continued walking and went up to the second floor. Brendan decided to take a shower and when he was done he lay down on his bed and picked up the phone.
His call to Lyla went to voicemail. Brendan had tried three times and on the fourth call Lyla's voice answered. "H-hallo?"
"Hey, Baby, how are you?" said Brendan cheerfully. "What are you doing?"
"Brendan?" Lyla's voice was hoarse.
Brendan was a little surprised. Four days ago when he met Lyla, he was still fine. "Babe, are you sick? Why do you sound hoarse? Do you want me to take you to the doctor?"
"No. no. I'm fine, Bren. I'm taking my cousin to the gynecologist for a check-up." Lyla said fast.
"Tell me if you're not feeling well. I miss you, Baby."
"Y-yeah, me too. You out with Jake and Arshan?"
"Yes. Arshan will be leaving soon and we might have a hard time seeing each other later."
A thick silence hung between their conversation after that. Brendan sensed that something didn't feel right. Lyla never been so silent in they conversation.
He and Lyla have been dating for four years since graduating from high school and after finishing his thesis, Brendan decides to get Lyla engaged. He really loved the beautiful girl with brown hair and big eyes.
Lyla is a lively and always cheerful girl. He brought the atmosphere to life whenever he was around. Brendan fell in love at first sight with Lyla, when the girl still had a boyfriend. Six months later, after Lyla broke up with her boyfriend, Brendan tried to approach her and they ended up together after two months of dating.
"Hey, Lail, I have a surprise for you," Brendan said after a moment of silence.
"Hm? Surprise?"
Brendan was composing the words to tell Lyla about the interview call when he heard a voice in the background.
"Babe, who are you talking to? Turn off your phone first. The doctor will check our baby soon."
Brendan was stunned. His phone was still in his hand but now his connection with Lyla was cut off. Lyla cutted it of.
What is it about? The doctor will check ... Lyla? Baby? What about her cousin like she said before? And the man who calls his fiancé as a Babe?
Brendan frowned. He recognized that voice. What happened here? Why Wyland with Lyla?

Brendan sat stiffly on the sofa. In front of him Lyla and Wyland sat side by side, while David and Sheryn sat on the other side of the sofa.
They both looked confused, while Lyla and Wyland looked scared and nervous, and Brendan looked cold and stiff.
"What happened?" Sheryn asked breaking the silence. Her voice trembled.
David squeezed his hand to calm his wife and himself. His instincts told him that soon he might be throwing his hand at one of the people in the room, apart from Sheryn of course.
Brendan turned and looked at Sheryn with a smile. "Looks like you should ask both of them, Mom," Brendan pointed at Lyla and Wyland. "Someone's going to have a big surprise for you and David."
"Brendan? Please ..." Lyla whispered pitifully.
She moved closer and took Brendan's hand but he slapped Lyla's hand away with a face that was clearly disgusted.
"Why are you begging me like that, Lail? Did you also use that tone when asking Wyland to fuck you?"
Wyland clenched his fists while Lyla started crying and Sheryn gasped.
"Hey, Bren, watch your words," Wyland snapped.
Brendan looked at Wyland with hatred in his eyes. He smiled sarcastically. "I have to watch my words? Don't you feel ashamed of your own words? At least what I say won't get a woman pregnant! You should take better care of your dick!"
David slowly turned his gaze to Lyla. "Lyla, are you pregnant?" asked David in an even tone.
Lyla nodded while crying.
"That baby ... Wyland's?" whispered Sheryn in a choked voice.
Lyla nodded again and her nod made Sheryn moan long while cupping her hands over her face. "Oh God, oh God." Sherym whispered in desperately tone.
Wyland gasped as David's hand grabbed his shirt and a hard smack hit his chin. For a moment Wyland felt something like a boulder hit his head, then he felt his body float and a few seconds later his body slid across the floor until it hit the wall behind him. Wyland squaked jn paint.
Lyla and Sheryn screamed in unison while Brendan didn't move at all. He just stared blankly at Wyland who was now being rocked by Lyla.
Sheryn dispelled David who seemed to be rushing towards Wyland again. "Dave, stop. You could kill Wyland," Sheryn shouted.
"I don't care," David snapped. "How could he do such a thing to his own brother's fiancé. He must have lost his mind!"
"It's not Wyland's fault, Mister Forbeen, it's my fault for not being able to take care of myself," Lyla groaned as she hugged Wyland.
Brendan got up from the couch. He walked over to Wyland and Lyla. Brendan turned and looked at David and Sheryn coldly and sharply.
"Mom, do you remember, I ever opposed you having a relationship with David? At that time I felt that our family might not get along with them. In fact, I never really got along with them. And you, Mr David Forbeen, even though I agreed in the end to call you Daddy, it's only because I'm tired of hearing my mother whine for me to call you that. As for Wyland, I never really thought of him as an older brother. He was greedy in my eyes and always tried to get what I had."
Brendan turned and looked at Lyla then turned to Wyland. He smiled coldly. "It's like this, seeing two garbage bags collected together. You guys deserve each other."
Brendan spat on the floor at Wyland's feet then staggered to the second floor. His bedroom door closed with a low sound and then the silence made the house feel like a graveyard. Only Lyla's sobs could be heard softly.
Sheryn plopped down on the sofa. "Why would you do something like that Lyla? You should have just refused when Brendan asked you to be engaged to him. Why should you hurt my son like this?" Sheryn muttered holding back tears.
Lyla shook her head. "No, Mrs Forbeen, I really love Brendan and I was so happy when he gave me the ring. What happened to Wyland I never planned to happen, madam. I'm sorry, really, I'm sorry," Lyla cried pitifully. Wyland grabbed Lyla's hand. "Don't be like that, Lail, I'm the one at fault here. I shouldn't have teased you then."
Sheryn looked at the pair of people who had broken her son's heart then looked at David who was sitting by her side.
Sheryn stood up and patted her husband's shoulder lightly. "I'm tired."
Sheryn walked away from the living room to the bedroom and closed the door. David heard the key turning and he took a deep breath. He stood up and pointed at Wyland. "Get out of here for a while. Don't you dare approach Brendan or Sheryn for a while. You've injured them deeply and I'm afraid this mess won't end here."
David left and a moment later the sound of his car leaving the yard. Wyland and Lyla hugged each other on the living room floor.
Meanwhile in his room, Brendan lay straight on the bed. He made his arms like pillows and looked up at the ceiling.
His tears were still flowing continuously and he was tired of wiping them.
He was still trying to digest what had happened and still couldn't figure out why Lyla and Wyland had hurt him in such a brutal way. He would forgive them if he could find just one fatal mistake he had done to them and would consider him even with his current situation. But nothing.
Brendan grabbed the phone and wiped his tears. "Jake, I need to talk to you and Arshan. Can we meet tonight as well, while Arshan hasn't left yet?"
" .... "
"I'll tell you later. I'll be waiting for you at Uncle Kay's club. While waiting, can you call your friend Harry? I'm selling that Harley Davidson he really wants tomorrow. Have him prepare his best offer."
Brendan came out of the room slowly and grabbed his car keys on the nightstand. He looked into the empty living room and smiled contentedly, then quietly walked towards the room at the end of the second-floor corridor.
Wyland's room was unlocked. He entered the room and moved quickly. He knew where Wyland had kept his safe and knew the combination number was the date of his mother's death.
Brendan opened the safe with ease and smiled with satisfaction at seeing Wyland's two motorized vehicle registration certificates. Harry would definitely be overjoyed with those beautiful Harley Davidson motorcycles soon to be his.

Arshan patted Brendan's shoulder gently. "I'll be waiting to hear from you. Stay strong, bro. You're not alone."
The call for the passengers to board the plane to Dubai sounded again. Brendan and Jake hugged Arshan and watched their best friend disappear behind the door to the plane.
"So you're really going to do your thing?" Jake asked. "What about your mother? She must be very sad."
"She'll understand," Brendan muttered. "Can Harry help me with the motorbikes?"
"Of course. You know Harry. I'll help you with my savings and, here's something from Arshan. He left it last night when we got home from the club."
Jake handed Brendan a long, thick envelope who accepted it wide-eyed. He looked into the envelope.
"This is Arshan's car ownership certificate, that yellow car? Why did he give it to me?"
"Arshan has spoken to Harry and he's willing to pay a hefty price for the car. You can use the money for you, Arshan said."
Brendan was on the verge of tears. He poked Jake's arm playfully. "You love me very much, don't you?"
Jake made a gag like he was about to throw up and they laughed as they walked out of the airport.
Brendan goes inside the house and hears a noise from the kitchen. He didn't go in there at all but walked straight to the second floor.
Sheryn saw Brendan's car parked on the side of the road next to the sidewalk and heard him enter and walked straight to the second floor.
"Bren," Sheryn called from under the stairs. "Can we talk first?"
Brendan looked down from the middle of the stairs. Sheryn's face was sad and her smile was weak. It had been several days since that night and Brendan had not spoken to anyone. He passed Sheryn and David as if they were invisible.
Wyland hadn't been back home since that night but Brendan overheard Sheryn calling him and asking how Lyla was. Brendan came down the stairs and stood before his mother.
Sheryn couldn't take it anymore and hugged Brendan crying into his chest. Brendan rubbed Sheryn's back gently.
"Don't cry, Mom."
"I'm sorry, Baby. I should have listened to what you had to say first. I have contributed to breaking your heart. I'm sorry," Sheryn sobbed.
"No, Mom, it's not your fault. In the end you're still going to marry David. You love each other. It's the bastard's fault as well as Lyla's. They both spit in my face while I was thinking too highly of believing they both really love me. stupid to see the truth."
Sheryn wiped her tears and distanced herself from Brendan. "They ... are getting married," Sheryn said nervously. "Lyla's pregnancy is in its twelfth week and it will be visible soon. Wyland wants to marry her before then."
Brendan laughed, sarcastically and bitterly. "Of course. Wyland is the perfect master. Go ahead. I can't do anything either. Tell that bastard I won't get in his way at all. He needn't worry about it. Lyla is nothing to me now anyway. I do love her, but it's not worth the fact that she could easily open her legs for another man while in almost five years of dating I never even dared to squeeze her breasts because she always asked me to wait until our first night."
Brendan laughed and Sheryn's tears started to flow. Brendan stroked Sheryn's shoulder gently. "Be happy, Mom. You'll have grandchildren soon."
Brendan continued upstairs and into his room. He looked around his room, satisfying the eye to see every element that filled the room, which he had occupied since childhood.
Brendan's eyes fell on a photo on the wall. The photo is at the age of five, with his parents. Brendan rode the blue bicycle, Greg and Sheryn knelt down to hug him on his right and left.
Next to the photo is his photo with Sheryn at the high school graduation ceremony. Brendan took the two pictures down and opened one of the two suitcases he had prepared and put the pictures in. Put it on a thick folder containing his personal documents.
Jake was coming over tonight to pick up his two suitcases. Brendan closed the suitcase and put it in the corner of the room. He lay down on the bed.
Tomorrow is the day of his interview with the company that called him. No one knows. Luckily he hadn't had time to tell anyone about the job.
Brendan has spoken to Mrs. Amy Loewn and asked permission to advance the interview schedule with the reasons he made. He couldn't stay in his house any longer.
He didn't want to hate his mother and David. They are innocent. However, in the end Wyland would return and he would definitely take Lyla with him. Brendan didn't want to lose control of himself and he might as well kill them both off when he got mad.
He will take revenge on them both in his own way. At the very least, he deserved compensation for his hurt and Wyland would pay for it.
Brendan didn't come down for dinner and he heard his mother and David leave just after dinner time. They were definitely going to where Wyland and Lyla were staying. Brendan knew that Wyland was in the process of paying off the apartment he bought and it was very likely that the two of them had fled there.
Jake arrived exactly half an hour later. He hauled Brendan's two suitcases into his car. He gave the key to Brendan. "I'll take your things over there and you can go straight into that tomorrow. I've already had someone clean it up so you can have a comfortable stay."
Brendan took the key and patted Jake on the back. "Thank you, Jake. I promise to repay your kindness one day."
Jake laughed. "Hey, stop it. You make me blush with words like that. Eww."
Jake left soon after and Brendan decided to go straight to bed.
In the morning, Brendan goes downstairs after hearing David leave in his car. Sheryn smiled and was a little surprised to see Brendan wearing a shirt and tie.
"Where are you going, Bren? You look so handsome."
Brendan smiled. He approached Sheryn and kissed her forehead. "I'm going to do a job interview."
"Owh congrats. I'm sure you'll get through this easily. You're a genius, Bren."
"Take good care of yourself, Mom. Don't be daydreaming while driving and stop practicing Mrs Prasad's recipes. They really don't taste good."
Sheryn laughed and hugged Brendan before he left. Brendan came out of his house and stayed behind the wheel of his car for a moment. He stared at the house for a moment. He might never see the house again after this.
Sheryn flashed through the window and Brendan wiped a drop of water that had fallen from the corner of his eye. "I love you, Mom, but I have to go now."
Brendan started the car and didn't look back. In her brightly lit kitchen, suddenly the glass in Sheryn's hand slipped and fell to the floor, shattering into pieces. Suddenly, Sheryn want to cry loudly.
