Chapter 1
The girl sat quietly on the sofa. After listening to what her uncle, Glenn Meyer, had to say, she fell silent for a long while.
Taking some time to clear her thoughts, she finally spoke, "So... now you want me to get married on behalf of Vanny?"
Glenn looked at her guiltily and replied with a sigh, "Edith, I really have no choice. Johann took Vanny and left without a word. Now the Lawson family wants her. What can I do? You look like her, and you are also legally my daughter..."
"But... I'm engaged to Johann. I am his fiancee..."
Before she could finish, Glenn fell to his knees with a thud. Edith was taken aback. She quickly stepped forward to help him up, but he refused.
"Edith, you're the only one who can save the Meyer family now! The Lawsons' business is huge, and we can't afford to offend them! If they withdraw their
investment, then 1.."
She understood the implication. If the Lawsons were annoyed, the Meyer family could possibly disappear from Caurtine.
But her marriage was at stake!
Marriage was sacred. Her happiness for the rest of her life was dependent on it. She was still young and was told to marry a man whom she did not know at all. In addition, he had a bad reputation. "How can I marry him?" she thought.
"But...
"How can I reject?" she brooded.
The Meyers had raised her for more than 20 years, and now it was time for her to repay them. Was she going to be an ungrateful person?
Glenn waited for her answer eagerly. After a long time, she eventually said meekly, "I want to give Johann a call."
"But his phone is dead!"
"I... I want to give it a try..." she replied with a trembling voice.
This was her only chance..
She kept dialing the number, and the cold mechanical voice at the other end repeatedly told her that the phone had been turned off. Just as she was about to give up, the phone was connected.
A familiar voice came through.
"Edith?"
It was Johann.
At that split second, Edith almost cried.
"Johann, where are you? Where's Vanny? Hurry up and bring her back..." She was desperately reaching out. It was her last hope. "Do you know that ..."
"I'm sorry, Edith. I can't take her back now," Johann interrupted in his tired and hoarse voice.
"Why?" she asked, quivering,
"Edith, you know that Lawson Jr. is a playboy. Vanny won't have a good life marrying him. That night, she came crying and begged me to take her away. How could I not help her? Edith, I know you must be very angry, but trust me. Once I settle her, I'll come back to you."
"Do you know... the consequences of taking Vanessa away?" Edith asked bitterly. Numerous feelings and thoughts raced through her mind.
"I know. Everyone knows that I have left with Vanny and thinks that there's something between us. However, I guarantee that you're the only one in my.

heart, and to me, she's just a sister! Vanny isn't like you. She's very weak and needs someone to take care of her. On the other hand, you've always disregarded rumors. You're much stronger than her! So, she needs me now."
When Edith heard his reply, she was dumbfounded. She trembled so hard that she almost fell.
"Is this what my fiance is saying?
"I am indeed strong, but is there anything wrong with that? Does it mean that a strong willed girl does not need a man's concern and care?" she quizzed.
Tears welled up in her eyes, but she stubbornly refused to shed a tear.
She stared hard into the sky to stop herself from crying.
"Johann, even if I beg you now, you won't bring Vanhy back, right?"
"Edith, she's your cousin. How can you be so cruel? Don't worry. I'll settle her down and come back to resolve the issues."
"Cruel?" Edith's heart shattered. She could no longer tell what bitterness was.
"Okay, I'll wait for you. I'll wait for a perfect resolution," she uttered word by word.
"Johann, you'd better remember your decision now. I hope you... will never regret it!"
She hung up the phone. She could not stop her tears from falling anymore.
She was alone and had no one to turn to now.
After a long time, she turned around and looked at Glenn sadly.
"I agree to the marriage..." The words stumbled out stiffly from her mouth.
"What else can I do?" she thought.
From the time she agreed till moving into her new residence, it took only half a day. She did not expect the Lawson family to be so anxious.
As she stood in front of the gorgeous villa, Ned, the butler, spoke softly, "Mrs. Lawson, this is your new house with Mr. Lawson. Please feel free to let the staff inside know your needs. They will definitely serve you well."
"Mrs. Lawson..." Edith felt a little repulsive with that status.
She had just returned to the country. All she thought of was to marry her beloved fiance, but she didn't expect that the man she had been longing for would take off with Vanessa and help her escape marriage.
She looked up at the villa in front of her and felt that it was a monster. Its mouth was wide open as if it would swallow her whole in the next second.
She took a deep breath and strode in without hesitation.
Once she stepped in, she would be a member of the Lawson family.
She would have nothing to do with the Meyers and Johann anymore....
After she entered, she asked Ned, "Excuse me, when can I see my husband and go to the courthouse to register the marriage?"
She took the initiative to ask. Knowing that she couldn't avoid it, she plucked up her courage to accept it.

Since she couldn't turn down this marriage, she decided to accept it calmly. After all, she was a strong girl, and nothing can crumble her. This was what Johann had thought of her!
Chapter 2
"I'm sorry, Mr. Lawson has been very busy recently and won't have time to go to the courthouse. We've already applied for a special service. You just need to sign this form and give me your ID card," Ned replied politely.
The moment he saw Edith, he was taken to her delicate, simple and clean face. Moreover, her eyes were exceptionally bright and beautiful.
"This kind of girl would definitely appeal to Carlos!" he thought.
Edith held her breath when she heard his response. For the past two days, she had often seen Simon on the news. He was either dating a model or flirting
with an actress, otherwise, staying overnight in a hotel!
"Busy?
"Busy chasing after girls, I bet!" she smirked.
On the other hand, it was also good that she had this moment to calm down and sort out her thoughts as she had gotten married in a hurry and everything felt so rushed.
"I understand. Let's do as you say."
Soon, Ned brought over the form. After she signed it, he left.
The registration was done very quickly and her documents were returned, but she did not see the marriage license. All she saw was that her status had been changed to "married" on her paper.
Ned saw through her doubts. "We need to show the marriage license to Mr. Lawson's mom, Rubby, so I don't have it now. If there's nothing else, I'll take my leave. Someone will be here to take care of your daily needs."
"Then... when will Mr. Lawson be back?" Edith asked nervously.
"He won't come for the time being. If he does, I'll send someone to inform you in advance," Ned answered kindly.
After that, he left.
Edith looked around. The villa was very big, with a large greenhouse and an indoor swimming pool. It was extremely luxurious.
She came to her master bedroom which felt cold and desolate.
Suddenly, Johann's face appeared in her thoughts.
"Edith, when we get married, we'll move out and enjoy our lives together as a couple. I'll let you decorate the room as you like, okay?" he said.
"Edith, let's buy a house! We can get married after you graduate."
"Yes, there must be a big wardrobe in the room to accommodate the clothes that you design for you and me!"
These sweet promises from her lover circled in her mind.
She opened the closet door in a daze. All the clothes inside were hers.
Her tears fell uncontrollably. She bawled.
Not too long ago, she was still Johann's fiancee and had been accepted by his parents. She was just waiting to graduate and get married.
Her classmates had all laughed at her for jumping straight into marriage as soon as she graduated. They chided her for being too devoted.
"I can be with my loved one forever, then what's the problem?" she thought then.
When she returned excitedly after graduation, her fiance ran off with her cousin to help her escape from marriage.
Chapter 2
"What right does he have? In what capacity is he doing this?
"Is it really because she is weak and needed someone to take care of her?
"There are so many men, but why is Johann chosen?
"And he didn't care about anything. He didn't even hesitate to go against the Lawson family. He threw everything to me. I had to bear the consequences he left behind."
The more she thought about it, the more she felt hurt. Subconsciously, she dug her nails deep into her flesh. It stung so much.
The reason why she agreed to the marriage was that she was disheartened and unable to defy. Secondly, she wanted to take revenge. She wanted to see how Johann would react when he came back!
At this same time, four men were playing Texas Hold'em poker in the most luxurious private room of Royrd Bar in Caurtine.
There was no unnecessary exchange of words, and only the sound of shuffling cards could be heard. The atmosphere was eerily oppressive and sombre.
Finally, the most talkative and youngest among all, Robert Britton couldn't stand it anymore. He glanced at one of the men and asked in trepidation, "Um... Carlos, isn't it your wedding day today? Don't... don't you want to see the beautiful bride?"
Chapter 3
"Yeah, it's your important day today. Why are you hanging out with us?" The others echoed in unison.
"If you want to leave, go ahead," the man raised his eyebrows and said callously.
His cold and menacing stare swept through every corner of the room, making everyone's hair stand on end.
Anyone who met his glare instantly felt the chill down their spine. They didn't dare speak another word.
Just like that, the group of men wasted a day playing cards until midnight.
Later in the night, Robert had to leave due to another engagement and they had to disperse.
When the man left the bar, Ned was already standing outside waiting with the car at the door.
He stepped forward and greeted respectfully, "Mr. Lawson, I'm here on Rubby's orders to pick you up."
The man pursed his lips tightly in obvious unhappiness.
His handsome eyes were filled with a dense chill.
"If I don't go, what will happen?" he uttered while narrowing his eyes slightly. His icy–cold words appeared a little indifferent and distant, with a faint tinge of viciousness.
"Rubby has instructed me to wait for you no matter what happens or how long you will take," Ned replied.
"Carlos, go ahead! Why are you torturing Ned? Isn't it better if you can settle the matter once and for all? We can always come out and have fun again another day!" Robert blurted.
"Settle once and for all." An emotion fleeted across Carlos' face when he heard that.
He quickly regained his composure and finally agreed and got into the car.
Ned also heaved a sigh of relief. He looked at the other three men gratefully and turned to leave.
Soon, the car arrived at the villa. It was pitch–black inside..
Carlos went in alone, and Ned waited outside.
He swiftly walked to the master bedroom. There was no light inside, and he was too lazy to turn it on. He didn't care what the woman looked like at all.
His heart had been dead for a long time. No one would be able to tug at his heart strings anymore.
He groped his way to the bedside. He lifted the quilt and laid himself on top mechanically.
It felt better than he had imagined.
A strange thought crossed his mind. He wanted to have a taste of her lips and see if they were desirable.
However, he had not touched any woman for many years already.
He frowned slightly and avoided Edith's mouth.
This was the price of marrying him. She was nothing other than a device responsible for having his child.
All these happened while Edith was still sleeping.
Chapter 3
She dreamed of a furnace, and she was inside.
She struggled to open her eyes, but her eyelids weighed a ton. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't open them.
She opened her mouth and called for help awkwardly.
"Johann... save me... save me..."
She cried, tears falling from the corners of her eyes and disappearing into her hair.
Just as Carlos was about to lose control, he suddenly heard her uttering a man's name. His body could not help but tremble slightly.
"Does this woman have someone she loves?"
All the excitement left him instantly.
He frowned and left the bed. He was not interested in another man's woman.
He left the villa, looking unkempt. Ned was surprised to see him. "Mr. Lawson is done? Isn't it a little too fast? Is the rumor about him being impotent.
true?" he wondered to himself.
