I am Mirah Santos, seventeen years old. I grew up under the power of my Grandmother Fe. Selling in the vegetable market is our livelihood. This is also what we pay for our household expenses, so my Grandma and I somehow make ends meet.
My parents died in an accident. I don't have any other siblings so I'm the only grandchild of Lola Fe. My Mama's brother, Tito Joey, was also with us at home. Not so old that I got used to just calling him Kuya Joey.
When I was a child, Papa and Mama used to travel together to the province. And because I was still young, Mama didn't take me with her because she was going to visit my deceased aunt.
I still remember when I was a child, I was really afraid of the dead, that's why when they went to visit someone who was dead, I didn't really go with them.
But in an unexpected event, the bus they were riding in had an accident. The bus lost its brakes and the passengers continued to fall down the cliff.
I was young then but I saw and felt the pain of seeing my parents buried at the same time. I was eight years old and had a mind of my own so I understood that my parents were gone.
At a young age I experienced bone stretching. Because we were short of money, Lola didn't even think of sending me to school. That's why when I see someone in uniform, I'm very jealous.
That's where I want to be able to wear a uniform while carrying a bag on my back.
But everything is just a dream. Because since Lola became my guardian, my life has become hell.
At four o'clock in the morning, Lola Fe wakes me up.
"Mirah! Mira! Awake and it's noon," he said.
"Grandma, I'm still sleepy," I said while still closing my eyes.
"I'm not going to wake you up or pinch you to wake you up huh?!" It annoyed me.
I immediately fell back to my feet. Lola's pain is as painful as the pain that really penetrates the skin and she doesn't care if I get hurt. He said he doesn't like being stubborn, that's why he's so rude.
I got up to wash my face and brush my teeth. While Lola went outside to feed her pet tagalog chicken.
We only live in huts. And Lola is used to taking care of chickens because it benefits the eggs she lays. And sometimes it cooks tinola when it is thought to slaughter the pet chicken.
After I washed, I made coffee. Atsaka sinaing. We only use wood to cook, which I still get from the forest every afternoon. When I don't save fuel, we don't have fuel to use for cooking.
"Mirah, hurry up and it's noon! What time can you go to the market again? You won't be able to catch up with that!" it shouted from outside the house.
There are so many shoppers every morning. So if you are early in the market you will get more money.
"Yes, La!" I replied.
"Yes La, yes! You're not in a hurry. Hurry up!"
I don't want to say anything, I know that Grandma is noisy, especially in the morning, so I'm used to it.
After a few minutes I got up and got ready to leave. That's all I'm going to do, filter the rice so that when I arrive at noon, I'll just eat it. It was up to Lola to watch.
I took my jacket and butchaka. I hung it on my waist. Then I took the basin with only vegetables and put it on my head.
"Grandma, I'm leaving." I'll say goodbye to it even though it doesn't care about me leaving.
"Alright, hurry up and walk as soon as you get more sales." It still repels me.
I approached Lola and asked. Then completely leave.
I have to leave and when I arrive I have to help Grandma. But if he scolds me, it's like he doesn't consider me his grandson.
Before I left the house, I saw Kuya Joey lying there-still asleep.
"Haiistt he is still good, life is good." I whispered to myself as I left the house.
Lola is afraid that Kuya Joey will get angry. Since this is the only one in his power. And my two aunts already have husbands. But like us, we are also in trouble. So they couldn't get me to adopt and study.
After I arrived in town, I sat down on the side of the stairs and started calling buyers to offer the vegetables I sell.
"Sister, Brother, you have vegetables there. Sister, buy them, the vegetables are still fresh! The string is only ten. Hey brother, tomatoes are only ten in plastic." My offer to passing shoppers.
Even if no one pays attention to me, I still continue to offer my goods. I have to shout to be noticed when shopping.
Those who passed in front of me, had different attitudes. Some will ask how much and then say dear. There are those who will beg you that they want you to just give away your goods because the forgiveness is almost beyond the investment. There are people who are always picky until your product is so soft that they won't buy it.
My sales are various, I am like that until noon and when I have a hundred pesos, we have enough food for the day.
Time passed until I realized it was noon. I dressed up to go home because my stomach was boiling from hunger. I quickly put away my vegetables and then carried them home again. And when Lola saw me, she was smiling at me.
"What, Mirah. Are sales strong today?"
"It's not much, Lola, I only went one way today."
"How can we eat good food if you always sell like that? And how about your investment for tomorrow?" Lola said to me annoyed.
For me, one hundred pesos is enough. We already have rice and will cook it dry until night. There is still a lot left that can be sold for tomorrow.
"Grandma, there's not much vegetables today. I'll just go back tomorrow.
"Alright, take that inside. What else can I do if that's all you sell... Serve it inside and when we're done eating." His grandmother ordered him.
"Yes Grandma," he quickly replied.
You know the type where you're tired from spending the day in the sun and then you're still the one doing the housework? This is what I experience every day that I stay in this world. Life is very difficult because if you are lazy you will not survive.
After preparing the food, Kuya Joey came out of our small bathroom.
It was just naked, so the belly button was clearly visible because there was nothing to do but sleep and hang out with friends. It's just Lola's only child, so no matter how lazy and stubborn it is, it can't do anything. I'm a little jealous of Kuya, because he's experiencing the easy life. It doesn't think about anything on a daily basis but where to hang out. The mood eats for free and sleeps peacefully because there is no responsibility.
"You stink Mirah, take a bath you smell like the market again!" it spoke to me.
I sat on the chair because I might get sick if I took a shower right away. He looked at me and sat in front of me.
"Did you just arrive?" it asked.
"Yes, brother, I took a little longer at the market because there were few shoppers. My sales were small."
"What more can you expect from selling vegetables? And if you just work as a helper, your life will be easier. Think about it, free food, free sleep, you'll earn more!"
I just looked at it as if wondering if I should accept the help he said.
"I know a lot that you can get a job with." It's still smiling at me.
Why does he have so many plans for me but nothing for himself? Lola heard our conversation so she came to the table to eat.
"What about going in as an assistant? What are you talking about, Joey?"
"I just thought, Mother. If Mirah comes in as a helper, she will be able to make more money than selling vegetables in the store."
"It's not possible, I can't order anything here. It would be nice if you could be counted on at home, maybe it's okay that Mirah isn't there! Why don't you look for a job when you're useful here at home."
"We're arguing again, Mother. I don't have any requirements. Besides, we can still eat because of Mirah." Anito laughed and winked at me.
Kuya Joey ignores what Lola says. It says everything beyond the other ear.
"You, Joey, don't put me through your nonsense. You might think I don't know that Aling Nida's child is with you. If you get her pregnant, what will you feed her? Will you have someone to live for?"
"Why would I get pregnant with that guy? He's not my boyfriend. He's also the one who is next to me and clings to me. Sometimes I get annoyed because he exposes his chest to me. When I'm upset, I'll bring it to him when he sees it. what he's looking for."
"Hey Joey, just try and if your parents bring you back then I'll let you go to jail. Don't you know that's a minor, right? Get your life in order, no one will help you if you go to jail!"
"Can you just eat now. You might still be full."
"That's what you always say. You don't feel sorry for me. My God, you're a child!"0
"Hey, let's eat it. You'll be full!"
"You're really rude, joey!""You guys are the ones who are feeding me the no way, oh man."
It just ate and ignored the mother.
"Brother, eat more ohh.."
I handed him the rice and he looked as if it was still hanging. I only cook two takals and that's all we could fit.
"Eat that, it's fine," Let's go together and just drink a lot of water before going to the room.
"Where are you going Joey?" Grandma asked.
"Sleep, there's nothing to do!" it's a joke.
"Well, you took a bath and you drained the water in the bathroom!"
"That's what Mirah can do, isn't it Mirah?" He winked at me and grinned then entered the Room.
Grandma didn't do anything anymore. He can't really handle Kuya Joey. It's too much of laziness and it's still an order. He trained like that before. If he had been preaching to Kuya Joey before then, he wouldn't be like that now. I was the only one he always scolded and always ordered even when I was little.
"Hey, if you have a child with that kind of attitude, he'll die without even understanding you." Lola whispered to herself.
"Grandma, go ahead, brother, I'll take care of fetching water, I can." I promised so he wouldn't whisper anymore. There really is no one else to do but me.
"Well, you're going to do laundry, what time will you finish there?"
"It's okay, La. I'll just hurry up and do the laundry."
"It's up to you,"
It got up and drank water and then went out.
"Where is the money you earned and I will buy cigarettes," he said.
"It's in the butshaka Grandma.."
It took the meat and then left the house..
The only annoying thing is that Grandma is old and still gets to smoke. I don't feel sorry for the body, it's thin and wrinkled, the vice is still constant. There is no difference with Kuya Joey who both do not worry about their health.
I put away food and washed mine. I was going to do laundry, so I took the clothes from the bathroom and put them away.
I was about to enter the room but I heard a grunt. So I peeked through the opening of the curtain.
My hair stood up when I saw Kuya Joey lying down holding his pet. And raising and lowering his hand.
His feet were straight and his head was raised as if he was enjoying what he was doing. I suddenly fell back. and immediately go back outside, then I'll take the clothes from the room and wash the other clothes first.
I immediately went to the river and washed the clothes there, but I immediately stopped when I remembered the scene I saw earlier. I can't explain what I felt. There was a mixture of surprise and fear at what was seen.
"Why does Kuya do that?" I shook my head and tried to ignore what I saw.. Then I read the clothes one by one and rubbed them.
After two hours I went home and hung the washed clothes.
While I was hanging, I saw Lola coming.
"Mirah, are you done?" it asked.
"Yes, Grandma. Why?"
"There was no one to go to the restaurant and when I came back I had a bangus. Delia (daughter of our neighbor in the store) gave me a bangus. I said because your income is low now, so our dish is salty again. thought of giving us bangus.
Wasn't Lola the one who asked you in the past if Kuya Joey was my Gf?
Grandma: yes, I'm also very confused, maybe I'm being bribed. It's up to him, Joey and that bad girl won't kill him.
Mirah: grandma.. It's really hard to laugh.
Lola: Oh, it's true. Ahh. Thank you Your uncle's handsome man has a lot of people chasing him, but he's just so lazy that it's a shame.
Mirah: Alright, I'll say it first. And I'll sweep outside.
Grandma: okay..
Lola came in, Kuya Joey was outside.. I looked at my brother who was still wearing boxers but he was wearing a T-shirt.. His hand was pointing at Kubo's ding ding and he was looking at me..
Mirah: Brother? Why?
Joey: aren't you bleeding mirah??
My brother's question suddenly made me nervous. Why did he ask that? And why can he look at me like that?
Mirah: yes brother.. Why?
Joey: That's right.! Tsk,, don't leave your panties in the bathroom just hanging in the bathroom, I noticed that there is blood on you, you're really disgusting because you're still messing around..
My brother turned his back..
I wonder what.... I breathed a sigh of relief at what he said..
He said oh and swept outside.
And when I sat in the chair, I felt so good.. I was able to rest at the end.
Lola: Mirah, you are too lazy to go out and go to the Store and get the bangus
Mirah: yes? Yes, grandma. I stood up and left the house.. When I can still breathe..
I walked to the store and saw sister Delia outside.
Delia: Hey, it's good that the bangus that I was giving you came here, handing me a taperwear.
Mirah: thank you sister..
Delia: ahh, by the way, he's a mirah, is your uncle there?
Mirah: yes, he is at home.
Smile now. Like a thrill
Delia: Please tell her how I'm doing.
Mirah: I'll tell you.. Thanks for this huh.
Delia: just wait Mirah
Mirah: why?
Delia: maybe you want to help my former classmate in Collage who is looking for a helper. Because he has a child who is 2 years old.
Mirah: yes? Grandma doesn't want it.
Delia: Alas.. That classmate of mine is really nice. It's sure that you'll last a long time in that job.
Mirah: Lola said there was nothing she could order when I left the house.
Delia: okay, as long as you change your mind.. Just come to me.
Mirah: okay. Thanks again for this. Go away.
Delia nodded.
Even though delia is not pretty. That's nice. Delia is 19 and Kuya Joey is 21 now. It's ok if sister Delia is at least nice. Right.
While I was walking.. I was thinking about what sister Delia said. I really want to work with a guaranteed salary so that I don't struggle to make ends meet. At least I'll just be at home cleaning the house and taking care of the kids. That's easy.
When I came home, my brother was sitting outside. Rubbing the pet chicken.
Mirah: Brother, sister Delia is saying hello to you.
Joey: yuccckk. Don't even mention the name, I'm sick.
Mirah: you are so bad brother, you are like grandma hahaha
Joey: even though we are this poor, we also have a good race. Then I'm going to cut that girl, it's like I said that I'm ugly and I don't know anyone who has looks.
Mirah: bro, it's not like that.. My sister is kind enough to bribe us.
Joey: ewww.. Wait, maybe that dish is my potion.
Mirah: hahaha bro, sister delia doesn't know that.
Joey: Don't worry.. Maybe later I'll realize that I'm dead to that girl. Eewwww. I shudder.
Lola: hey you dalwa, what are you doing, I'm hungry, get ready to eat mirah.
Joey: It's okay. I went inside.
We will face each other at the dining table.
Mirah: la.. Sister Delia had an operation on me. It's work.
Grandma: what job?
Mirah: she is an assistant..
Grandma: I said I don't want to, right?
Joey: why? You don't want to make money every Kinsenas.
Grandma: I don't want to. It will be more difficult for me if mirah disappears from here.
Joey: tsk., I'm surprised you still married that father, we are so poor.
Grandma: hey joey,, even though I married your father, he was a good father to you. Even if we are only one Tuka, we can eat 3 times in the afternoon.
Joey: tsk, he left us immediately.!
.
Grandma: what are you saying Joey? You're fine, if it wasn't for your father, you wouldn't be perfect.
Joey: tsk,, buo buo.. That's why we beg for food from Others.
Lola: stop joey!!! Grandma shouted at him.
I'm just quiet. I don't want to join the conversation.
They always beat like that. Then later they are ok. It's boring to listen to... After spending the afternoon, you can finally rest.
I cleaned my body then went out of the bathroom to go to sleep.. I was wearing short shorts. And a shirt.. My hair was up because I didn't cover my head.. When I entered the room, Lola was already sleeping on her mat.. I slept next to Lola.. My brother was on the other mat..
I was surprised by my brother's behavior..because he is still awake now and his back is against the Wall.. I turned my back to him but I know he is looking at me..
I've been nervous ever since I saw my brother acting on his own, I feel like my brother always has a plan for me, especially now that he's staring at the whole thing while I'm wiping my neck with a towel.
I turned to go to bed but my brother still looked at me.
Mirah: Brother, why are you awake?
Joey: I can't sleep. Can you give me a massage.. I got naked and fell down.
"My back hurts quickly, massage me first"
I was hesitant to massage my brother..
But because he's my uncle, I can't scold him.
I came closer to massage her back..
Joey: Get rid of the pain in my back.
I knelt beside her.. And slowly I held her back..
Mirah: brother, I don't know how to massage..
He looked at me and suddenly grabbed my thigh
Joey: just like this or like this.. It's like you're eating rice
