Chapter 1 EXILE

Rose Pov

Heart pounding, I stood in the starry clearing. The pack circled me, their darkly shining eyes I had never felt this alone.

"Rose," Alpha Magnus's loud voice sliced over the evening. "Step forward."

I inhaled shakily and turned to find the circle's center. My eyes looked for my partner, Kyle. He wouldn't gaze at me when I saw him.

"You know why you're here," Magnus said. I nodded, attempting to keep a calm voice. I do."

"Tell everyone why. I turned to study the faces I had known all my life. my friends and family. Now they all fixed me as though I were a stranger.

"I refused to hunt humans," I responded, speaking more forcefully than I felt. "I wouldn't kill anyone."

Whispers started to fill the surrounding space. I picked up terms like "weak" and "traitor" being used. Magnus silently held up a hand. "For generations our ways have kept us strong. Our right, our legacy is the hunt.

"But we need not kill anymore," I said. "We are able to live differently right now. Master." "You dare question our ways?" Magnus snarled.

I kept my ground. Someone has to do. It is not right. "Not right?" cried out a voice. "We are what we are!" I gave my head a shake. "We represent more than just that. We are free to choose to be better." At last Kyle moved forward, hope sprang in my chest. Certainly, he would back me up. He replied quietly, reaching for my hand, "Rose."

His touch set off memories of all our stolen moments. Midnight rushes across the woodland, passionate kisses under starry heavens, murmured vows of eternity.

"Kyle," I muttered back. " please."

His gaze softened for a minute. I thought back to the day we met and how he made me chuckle during a packed pack meeting. It was fun. I considered leisurely afternoons beside the river, wrapped in his arms, organizing our future together.

But Kyle's face grew tough then. He turned to Magnus after dropping my hand. Alpha comes first in the pack. Usually." My heart fell apart. "Kyle, no," I said in a gasp. You cannot mean that.

He would not look at me. " apologies, Rose. But this is really who we are." Tears pierced my eyes. "Thus that's it. All we exchanged, all our preparations they mean nothing?"

Kyle's jaw tightened. "The pack is all that exists. You are aware of that. huh, "I thought I meant everything to you." A flutter of agony passed across his cheeks, but he straightened himself. "You made your choice." Magnus cleared his throat. "The pack has decided, Rose. You're no longer one of us." The words strike me like a gut reversal punch. "You're sending me out? Just like that?"

"You have left us without option," Magnus said. "Your ideology expose us all to danger." I turned frantically about. "Does anyone else find this to be unacceptable?"

Silence answered my call to pitch. Not even my parents would look at me. "Fine," I answered with trembling voice. "If this is what the pack wants, then I want not to be part of it anymore." Turning to go, Kyle grabbed my arm. "Rose, slow down." Don't do this. Hope blazed once more for a split second. I said, "Come with me," softly. " We could start over, just us you and I."

Conflict burned in his eyes. I considered he might agree for a moment. He shook his head at that. "I'm unable. My spot is here. And mine isn't, I said regretfully. "Goodbye, Kyle". Tears distorting my view, I turned away and fled into the trees. I heard Kyle say my name behind me, but I turned away.

I sprinted till my legs gave out, tumbling into a little clearing. The moon gleamed down, unconcerned about my suffering. Now what was I meant to do? Where could I possibly go?

I lay there gathering my breath, as a twig broke close. I stopped and listened very carefully "Who's There?" I cried out, flinging to my feet. My mouth fell as someone emerged from the darkness. "You huh"? I cried. " What are you doing here? Stella, Kyle's sister, answered. She cast a pityful but determined glance at me.

"I couldn't let you go alone," she declared. "What the pack done; it's not right." I looked at her incredulously. You are risking everything by being here.

Stella shucked. " Maybe it's time someone did." More forms started to show out of the trees before I could answer. My heart dropped as I saw them pack army headed by Kyle himself. " What's going on?" I insisted, dread tumbling into my voice.

Kyle advanced further, his face a mask of suffering. "My apologies. Still, we cannot let you go."

"What?" I asked, backing backward. You've made it abundantly evident I'm not wanted. "It's not that simple," Kyle said. "You know far much more than the pack deserves. You running to expose us to people puts us at risk.

What I was hearing. "You are going to make me stay? Keep me captive?"

Kyle stammered at what I said. "We'll work something out." But right now you have to return with us." Looking at Stella in need of reassurance, she appeared exactly as stunned as I did.

"No," I answered forcefully. "I never want to go back. You cannot keep me. Kyle's eyes blazed with resentment. "Don't complicate this more than it has to be, Rose." I sensed the change approaching; my wolf surfaced. "Stay back," I said.

Still, they kept progressing. I decided in the next split second. I moved into my wolf form and let the transition follow me, fur growing across my body. Shouts and gasps started all around me. I ran into the trees racing between two armies to my benefit.

Kyle's roar behind me called the others to pursue. I knew these forests better than anyone, though, and I started ahead. My mind sped as I ran. Gone was all I had known. One night, my house, my family, my future with Kyle all collapsed. But right now I couldn't fix on that. I had to keep on, figure out how to survive on my own.

As I pushed myself faster than I had ever ran, the sound of pursuit vanished. Though I knew I couldn't stop, I didn't know where I was headed. I halted at last, exhausted and aching, as the first glimmer of dawn emerged from the woods. Curling up under some fallen logs, I discovered a secret place and turned back to be human.

Tears came freely now as the whole weight of what had happened sank in. Alone, banished, I hunted among my own people. How had everything gone so fast? But a weird peace descended over me as I laid there. I was really free, first in my life. No pack rules, no expectations, no one guiding me toward behavior or identity.

That was terrible. It was thrilling, though as well. One idea kept coming back to me as sleep overtook me this is not the end. This is only starting point. I had no idea, though, that fate had far more ideas for me than I could ever imagine.

Chapter 2 WILD AT HEART

Rose Pov

My heart raced when I awoke with a start. I was briefly unaware of my whereabouts. The pack, Kyle's treachery, and my escape all came rushing back. As an outsider, I was alone myself in the wilderness.

The sun was high in the sky, filtering through the leaves above me. Sleeping for hours. Not having eaten since before the pack meeting, my stomach growled.

I mumbled to myself, "Okay, Rose." "Time to figure this out." Grasping the fallen logs with my aching muscles, I crawled out. I needed water and nourishment, first things first.

My wolf senses took over as I closed my eyes. I was surrounded by a vibrant forest, with tiny animals running around, birds chirping, and a distant trickling of water.

I followed the sound. I found myself looking for other wolves' indications even when I was by myself, proving that old habits do not die. I discovered a tiny creek after 10 or so minutes of strolling. The water was clear and clean. I bent over and drank from my hands. My tiredness was partially relieved by the cool, pleasant temperature.

Again, the truth of my circumstances struck as I sat by the creek. Really, I was all alone. Kyle, no family, and no pack. Kyle. Thinking of him made my heart hurt. He choose the pack over me, how could he? After all that we had endured and all of our commitments...

My imagination skipped to a scene of Kyle and me on a hot summer night, sitting by this identical creek. with his lips on my neck and his arms encircling me.

He had said, "I'll always love you, Rose." "No matter what."

Lies!!! Everything. Rejecting the memory, I shook my head. Reminiscing on the past was not an option. My priority has to be getting by.

Again, and with more intensity, my stomach rumbled. Rising to my feet, I looked about. There had always been a group element to hunting. I found myself alone now.

I turned to go in the direction of some berry bushes that I saw close. There was a voice in my thoughts that stopped me as I grabbed for a cluster of fruit.

"Are you sure those are safe?"

I got stuck. That voice was accurate. These berries might be toxic, but I had no idea. I said, "Great." "Can't even feed myself."

I became irritated with myself. To hell with everything, I was a werewolf. My chances of surviving in the wild should be high. Trying to calm down, I took a big breath. Rose, pause. What is it that you know?"

I recalled childhood lessons about safe and dangerous plants. I started to forage cautiously and slowly. There are edible roots here, and berries there. That would sustain me even though it wasn't much.

I attempted to figure out what to do next while I finished my dinner. This place couldn't hold me for ever. I would be in the pack's sights. I needed to get away, far away, out of sight from them.

However, where? I had never ventured beyond the confines of my rucksack. I didn't understand the world that lay beyond.

I located a protected area under a big tree as darkness fell. In an attempt to settle into the unyielding surface, I curled up. Resting was difficult. I was certain that the pack had located me since I jumped at every sound. Furthermore, when I did fall asleep, Kyle's face and words would reverberate throughout my dreams.

Rose, put the pack first. Every time." Cold and aching, I woke up before daylight. However, a peculiar emotion overcame me as I observed the sun rising and illuminating the sky with vivid colors.

Liberation. I felt deeply liberated for the first time in my life. Neither expectations nor pack laws. Anywhere I went, I could be anyone. The idea thrilled and scared me at the same time.

I learned how to live alone for the next few days. I had never been forced to hunt by myself, so it was a struggle. Still, I got better gradually. Snagging a rabbit or locating a secure sleeping spot were examples of minor victories that felt enormous.

I saw an injured fox one afternoon, maybe one week into my exile. Whimpering, it was stuck in some sort of trap. Moving forward was my first inclination. Serving it could delay me down; it wasn't my concern.

Still, something changed inside me as I stared at the unfortunate creature. Similar to me, this fox was afraid and alone. I moved closer, taking my time. I said, very quietly, "Hey there." "It is acceptable. You will receive my assistance. I looked at the trap, and the fox gave me a feeble roar but did not challenge me. I finally got its leg free, but it took some effort. Something warm swelled inside me as the fox hobbled off. Despite losing my pack, my compassion remained intact.

I heard something nearby while I was falling asleep that night. Sensing that the pack had located me at last, my heart raced.

But, curled up a few feet away, it was the fox. It had a perceptive gaze on me and seemed to be saying "Thank you."

Less alone than I had felt in days, I grinned.

I found the fox gone when I woke up the following morning. On the other hand, it had left behind a dead rabbit, which was carefully placed by my side. Embracing the gesture, I laughed. Looking at the deserted trees, I thought, "I guess we're even now."

I heard something different just as I was about to go on. The sounds. voices of people. Not knowing how to proceed, I froze. I was a human being for the first time. We should always heed the pack's advice and stay put.

But I hesitated for some reason. One of them actually sounded, hurt? I walked closer, hiding among the bushes, against my better judgment. Two people a man and a woman were in front of me. With his leg held tightly, the man lay on the ground. The woman seems alarmed. She said, "Jake, we need to get you help." "That cut looks bad." Jake shook his head, the man. "Mira, we're far away from anything. Go, just go. Get assistance. Here, I'll be all right."

My heart raised. I better get out of here. I have nothing to do with this. Still, I knew I had to stay as I observed the man battle and the woman's fearful expression. As I emerged from my hiding spot, I inhaled deeply. I replied, "I can assist." Surprised by my unexpected arrival, they both leaped.

Stepping carefully in front of Jake, the woman questioned, "Who are you?" "Where did you come from?" My mind racing, I hesitated. The truth couldn't be told to them. Though perhaps...

"My name is Rose," I said. "I... I'm a wilderness guide. As I heard noises, I was camped close by. With suspicion, Jake looked at me suspiciously. "Alone here in the wilderness?"

Making an effort to seem assured, I nodded. "There is no one I know these forests like me. Also, I am skilled in handling such wounds."

Mira appeared to be conflicted. "I don't know..." Please, I uttered. "Let me help." A gaze exchanged between Jake and Mira. Jake gave a last nod. "Okay," he responded. "What do you need?"

Excitation and terror mixed strangely as I crouched next to Jake, assessing his wounds. My initial genuine engagement with people was this. I was instructed to run by everything I had learned. While applying the skills I had acquired from years of living in the pack, I sensed something more as I started to clean Jake's wound.

Goal and Purpose. I felt that I was finally where I was supposed to be, after my banishment. I had no idea how everything would change as a result of this accidental contact. The greatest obstacles and rewards of my trip were still to come. It was only the beginning.

Chapter 3 HEALING HANDS LOVING HEARTS

Rose Pov

My heart pounded as I knelt next to Jake. I had never been this close to a human before, and I was struck by how different he smelled from werewolves. It was nice.

"This could be a little painful," I said as I examined his leg. The wound was deep, and the first signs of infection were seen. Jake nodded while hissing in agony. "Do what you need to do." Mira came close to me, her gaze never leaving mine. "Are you very sure you know what you're doing?"

I tried to look confident as I smiled. "Believe me. I've handled worse." I talked to divert Jake's attention from his discomfort while I cleansed the wound. "So, what brings you two out here?"

Jake winked. "Trip for hiking. wished to spend some time away from everything." "A little get away," murmured Mira. I laughed. "Yeah, you chose a rather remote location. Do anybody get it this far." Curious, Jake's gaze met mine. "What about you? What's a wilderness guide doing out here alone?"

I froze for a moment, trying to think of an explanation. "I enjoy the isolation, actually. It facilitates my thinking process."

Jake questioned, "About what?" I shrugged and looked at his wound. "Life, I suppose. To sort things out, you may occasionally need to take a break."

Jake nodded. "I know that feeling."

I discovered as I worked that I required certain herbs to help with the infection. I said, "I'll be right back." "I need to find some plants to help with this." Mira appeared frightened. "You're leaving?"

I told her, "Just for a few minutes." "There's a patch of leaves nearby that'll help prevent infection." Jake's eyebrow shot up. "You know your plants." I grinned. "It's part of the job."

My mind raced as I looked around for the leaves. How did I get there? It went against everything I'd been taught to help others. However, it felt... correct. Jake looked pale when I got back. The virus was spreading more quickly than I had anticipated. "I warned you that this might taste bad," as I grounded the leaves into a paste. "But it'll help."

Jake gulped the concoction with a funny look. "Tastes like feet." I chuckled. "Maybe, but feet that'll save your life."

We looked at each other while I put the paste on his wound. For a moment, I felt a spark of... something. Connection? Attraction? I quickly looked away, confused by these new feelings.

"So, Rose," Jake murmured, his tone becoming gentler. "Tell me more about yourself." I hesitated. "Not much needs to be revealed. I'm just a young woman who adores the woods."

Jake pressed, "There's more to you than that." "I can tell." I grinned, my heart warming up inside. "Possibly. But let's get you better first for the time being."

As the day went on, Jake's health got better. His cheeks took on color again as the fever subsided. At last, Mira calmed down and trusted that I knew what I was doing. As night fell, we set up camp. I showed them which berries were safe to eat and demonstrated how to start a fire without matches.

Jake commented, "You're amazing," as he observed me at work. "Where did you learn all this?" I stopped, flashing back to my time in the pack. "My... family," was my final response. "We lived off the land." Jake gave a nod. "Must have been quite an upbringing."

"It was," I mutely said. "But things change." While seated by the fire, we exchanged tales. I tried not to divulge too much, but I noticed that I was talking more than I had in weeks.

Jake drew nearer to me as Mira went to sleep. With a quiet "thank you," he spoke. "For everything."

I grinned. It's nothing. Anybody would have followed suit." Jake gave a headshake. "No, they wouldn't. Rose, you are exceptional."

When our gazes locked, that flame ignited once more. I kind of thought he was going to kiss me. I kind of wanted him to. However, reality struck back. I was a werewolf. He was a person. This is not going to work.

I got up out of the blue. "I should check your bandages." Jake observed me closely as I cleaned his wound. "You know," he replied, "we could use someone like you at the wildlife sanctuary." Startled, I looked up. "Wildlife sanctuary?"

Jake gave a nod. "I work there. When an animal is hurt, we tend to it so it can heal and go back into the wild. With someone with your abilities would be very beneficial." My heart pounded. A position? A shot at starting over? The offer seemed too good to be true.

With hesitation, I responded, "I... I don't know." "I'm not sure I'm cut out for that kind of work." Jake grinned. "I believe you would be ideal. Just consider it, please." I nodded, ideas racing through my head. a position among people. an opportunity to assist animals using my expertise.

Could I actually get out of the forest, though? My house? I was lost in contemplation as I sat by the fire watching Jake go to sleep. Everything was shifting so quickly. Only a few days prior, I belonged to a pack. I was thinking now about a life among people.

I was startled out of my sleep a twig breaking in the shadows. I raised my wolf senses to full alert and sniffed the air. That smell. That smell seemed familiar to me.

I looked into the shadows, my heart thumping. There were blazing eyeballs that I could see just beyond the firelight.

Kyle. He had located me. I tensed up when I stood. How should I proceed? Wake Jake and Mira? Run? Fight?

Without ever taking his eyes off mine, Kyle moved into the light. "Rose," he murmured. "It's time to come home." I gave a headshake. "I no longer call that place home. You made that quite evident."

Kyle flinched. "Position has shifted by the pack you're needed." I gave a sour laugh. "You need me now? "Please," pleaded Kyle. "Just hear me out." I looked at Jake and Mira, who were still soundly asleep. They were unaware of the threat they were facing. "Not here," I said. "Meet me by the stream. Ten minutes." After giving a nod, Kyle vanished into the night.

My thoughts were racing. What was the pack's desire? Why this time? And Jake's offer what about it? I was confused as I stared at Jake's sleeping form. A chance at something different, or the life I knew? Whatever I chose, there was one thing I was certain of. Everything would change after tonight. I took a deep breath and entered the woodland, prepared to confront my past and make decisions about my future.
