Chapter 1 THE CRIME SCENE

Mia Jackson stepped out of her car and onto the rainy pavement. The flashing lights of the police cars illuminated the dark night, casting an eerie glow over the scene. She grabbed her notebook and pen, her eyes fixed on the mansion in front of her.

Richard Langley, a wealthy businessman, had been found dead in his home. The police were still processing the scene, but Mia had managed to get a tip that the victim had been murdered.

As she approached the entrance, a uniformed officer blocked her path. "I'm afraid this is a crime scene, miss. You can't go in there."

Mia flashed her press badge. "I'm Mia Jackson, a journalist with the Daily Times. I need to get a statement from the lead detective."

The officer hesitated before stepping aside. "Fine, but be quick about it."

Mia nodded and entered the mansion. The interior was lavish, with marble floors and crystal chandeliers. But amidst the opulence, she saw signs of a violent struggle. Furniture was overturned, and bloodstains marred the walls.

She spotted Detective John, a no-nonsense veteran of the force, and made her way over to him. "Detective, what can you tell me about the victim?"

Detective John turned to her, his expression grim. "Not much yet. We're still processing the scene. But I can tell you that it looks like a robbery gone wrong."

Mia's instincts told her otherwise. She sensed that there was more to the story, something the police weren't revealing. She made a mental note to dig deeper.

Mia's eyes narrowed as she scribbled some notes in her pad. "A robbery gone wrong, huh? That's what you're sticking with?"

Detective John nodded, his expression unyielding. "That's what the evidence suggests. We'll know more once forensics finishes processing the scene."

Mia wasn't convinced. She had a feeling that there was more to the story, something the police weren't seeing. Or maybe something they were deliberately ignoring.

She decided to push a bit harder. "Can I see the body?"

Detective John hesitated, then nodded. "But be warned, it's not pretty."

Mia steeled herself and followed the detective to the room where the body lay. Richard Langley's lifeless eyes stared up at her, his face frozen in a permanent grimace. Mia's gaze took in the scene, her mind racing with possibilities. She brought out her camera and took a few photos of the lifeless body.

As she turned to leave, she noticed something strange. A small piece of paper on the floor, partially hidden under the couch. She pointed it out to Detective John.

"What's that?" she asked.

Detective John walked over to investigate. "Looks like a piece of paper with some scribbled notes. Doesn't seem relevant to the case, but we'll bag it anyway."

Mia's instincts told her otherwise. She had a feeling that this piece of paper might be the key to unlocking the truth behind Richard Langley's murder.

As Detective John bagged the paper, Mia's mind raced with possibilities. She knew she had to get a closer look at the notes, but the detective was already sealing the evidence bag.

"Can I get a copy of the notes?" she asked, trying to sound nonchalant.

Detective John raised an eyebrow. "I don't think that's necessary, Mia. This is a police investigation, not a journalist's playground."

Mia smiled sweetly. "Come on, Detective. I know it's a police investigation case but I have a feeling those notes are important."

Detective John sighed, clearly hesitant. "I'll see what I can do. But no promises."

Mia nodded, knowing she'd have to wait. But she was determined to get to the bottom of the mystery.

As she left the mansion, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was onto something big. The notes on that paper might hold the key to unlocking the truth behind Richard Langley's murder.

She decided to do some digging of her own, starting with the victim's business dealings. Maybe there was a connection between Langley's murder and his shady business associates.

Mia's investigation had just begun, and she was ready to follow the trail wherever it led.

Mia spent the rest of the day digging into Richard Langley's business dealings. She scoured through financial records, interviewed former employees, and even snuck into a few high-stakes meetings.

After a few weeks, Mia had uncovered a web of deceit and corruption that went all the way to the top. Langley had been involved in some shady dealings, and it seemed like he had made some powerful enemies.

But Mia still needed concrete evidence to tie it all together. She decided to pay a visit to Langley's business partner, the enigmatic and reclusive billionaire, Marcus Black.

As she arrived at Black's mansion, Mia felt a chill run down her spine. Something didn't feel right.

The guard answered the door, his expression cold and unforgiving. "Can I help you?"

Mia flashed her press badge. "I'm here to see Marcus Black. I have some questions about Richard Langley's murder."

The guard hesitated before disappearing into the depths of the mansion. Mia waited, her heart pounding in her chest.

Finally, the guard returned, his expression unreadable. "Mr. Black will see you now."

Mia followed him into the mansion, her senses on high alert. She knew she was getting close to the truth.

As she entered the study, Marcus Black looked up from behind his desk, his eyes piercing and calculating.

"Ah, Mia Jackson," he said, his voice dripping with malice. "I've been expecting you."

Mia's instincts screamed at her to run, but she stood her ground. She knew she had to confront Black bravely if she wanted to uncover the truth.

"So, Mr. Black," Mia began, trying to keep her voice steady, "I understand you were Richard Langley's business partner. Can you tell me more about your relationship with him?"

Marcus Black leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers together. "We were partners, yes. But I think you'll find that our relationship was... complicated."

Mia raised an eyebrow. "Complicated?"

Black nodded. "Let's just say that Richard and I had different visions for the company. He wanted to take risks, push the boundaries. I, on the other hand, preferred more... cautious approach."

Mia sensed a hint of tension beneath Black's polished exterior. "And did these differences ever lead to conflicts?"

Black's smile was thin and cold. "Conflicts? Oh, no. Nothing like that. Just... lively discussions."

Mia wasn't convinced. She pressed on, her instincts telling her that Black was hiding something. "Can you tell me more about the company's dealings? Were there any shady business practices?"

Black's expression turned glacial. "I think that's enough questions for now, Ms. Jackson. I'm afraid I have a meeting to attend to."

Mia knew she was getting close to something, but Black was shutting down. She needed to think fast, come up with a new angle.

She was led out by Black's guards. As Mia went through the corridor of the mansion, she noticed a figure watching her from the shadows. It was a little girl with long brown hair. Mia felt a shiver run down her spine as the little girl stepped forward.

"Who are you?" the little girl asked, her voice low and husky.

Mia cleared her throat before speaking, " Ehmm, I'm a journalist. I'm investigating Richard Langley's murder. she said, showing the little girl her badge. And who are you, a pretty young lady?... Mia asked.

The little girl smiled, a hint of sadness in her eyes. I'm Sophia, Richard's maid.

"Richard's what!!! How can a little girl be his maid.. She said in shock."

"My mom formerly worked for him, but she's no more.. So I have to work to be able to eat since I have no one by my side.. Sophia said with sadness in her eyes.

Mia nodded, she knew she had to protect the girl and also to ask her few questions about late Richard.

"What do you know about the late Richard?? Mia asked in curiosity.

Sophia glanced around nervously before pulling Mia into a quiet alleyway. "Richard was in deep trouble, she whispered.

"Trouble? Mia said in a low voice. What do you mean by that?

Sophia ran out of the alleyway leaving Mia with an unanswered question.

Mia sighed, "Maybe she's scared, I have to note this but what's she doing here in Black's mansion. Ohh my God, I have a lot of questions to ask."

Mia left the mansion, she couldn't shake off the thoughts that were over her head. Black is hiding something, and she needs to find out what it is.

Chapter 2 UNCOVERING THE TRUTH

Mia entered her home, her mind racing with questions and flashbacks of what happened in the Black's mansion. She thought about the thought about the little girl and how she could be of help to her and the police. She couldn't shake off the feeling that Sophia is hiding something from her.

She walked towards the bathroom to have her shower after a long hectic day. She relaxed on the bath tube allowing the water to flow through her legs as she hummed to her favourite song. She was done bathing then headed to her room.

She took her bag and searched for her phone. She found a small piece of paper in her bag, she wondered how it got there.

It was a note, scrabbled in hasty handwriting "look closer at Richard's business deals. The truth is hidden in plain sight".

Mia's eyes narrowed "Who wrote this note and what did they mean? She stepped towards the kitchen to get a glass of water. She was sweating profusely and her heart was racing so fast.

She decided to dig deeper into Richard's business deals, to see if she could discover any clues.

She took a deep breath, searched for her writing materials and headed to her computer desk.

As the investigation began, she searched over the financial records of Richard and she noticed something strange. A series of transactions, all linked to a shell company, seemed to be hiding a large sum of money.

Mia's instincts told her that this was the key to unlock the truth. And she is almost close to obtaining that.

She felt like a figure was watching her through the window.

Mia's heart raced as she realised she was being watched. She tried to brush it off as she was hallucinating, but the feeling only intensified.

Suddenly, her computer screen flickered and went black. Mia's eyes widened as a message appeared on the screen.

"STOP DIGGING MIA. YOU'RE ABOUT TO DIE".

Mia instincts screamed at her to run, but her journalistic curiosity kept her rooted to the spot. She had to know who was behind the message.

"Who's there? Who are you? She yelled! she quickly pulled down the curtains of her room for her not to be seen nor watched.

In a hurry she backed up her files and left the house. She felt unsafe, her senses on high alert. As she walked out into the cool late night air, she noticed a figure lurking in the shadows.

"Who are you?"Mia demanded, trying to keep her voice steady.

The figure stepped forward, revealing a young woman with a look of determination etched on her face.

"My name is Emily," the woman said. I'm a former employee of Richard Langley's. And I know the truth about his murder."

Mia looked at Emily's eyes, she saw the truth in what she said but, what did Emily know, and is she willing to share?

"Tell me, what did you know about the late Richard? "Mia asked, her pen poised over her note book ready to note any clues or hints.

Emily glanced around nervously.... "I don't know if I can trust you," she said.

Mia smiled and held up her hands, "I'm a journalist, Emily. It's my job to uncover the truth. I promise to keep your identity hidden and keep your information confidential.. And also the cops are here to protect you so be free with me, we need to find out what happened to late Richard.

Emily sighed before speaking. "Sir Richard was suspecting a fishy deal within his own company. He suspected someone was embezzling funds and laundering money through offshore accounts."

Mia is seen taking notes of the information that was passed. Her eyes widened "Did he have any proof?"

Emily nodded. "He had documents and records kept in a safe at the office, but he needed more solid evidence to take to the police. That's when ..... That's when he was killed..

"Hmm, that's too bad. Do you know who might have wanted him dead? Mia said with her mind racing."

Emily hesitated before speaking... keeping Mia in a suspense

Mia called out to her "Emily, are you there? Say something please."

"There were rumors about Marcus Black's involvement in some shady business practice. And do you know Black and late Richard aren't just business partners, but best friends... And Richard had been arguing with him a lot in the days leading up to his murder."

Mia looked at Emily in the eyes " I think we have to involve the cops on this. I know detective John, we will need to talk to him about this."

Emily nodded with a look of determination on her face."I'm ready to tell him everything I know."

"Good, that's the spirit!! Mia said with a bright smile on her face.. She looked at Emily's face, Emily wasn't happy she looked so scared and nervous.

"Emily, I need to ask you something,"Mia said calmly. "Are you in any danger? Do you think whoever killed Richard might come after you?"

Emily's face widened, fear was written all over her. "I don't know, I have been so scared since Richard died. I think they might have started to suspect me. I don't know who to trust."

Mia nodded, "it's fine now you are with me. I will make sure you are safe. But you need to do something for me."

"What's that? Emily asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I need you to go into hiding, I will arrange a safe house where you will stay if possible you have to stay far away from here. We will uncover the truth and bring the killer to justice." Mia said firmly.

Emily nodded with tears welling up her eyes. "Thank you Mia, I trust you. I will leave soon from here."

Mia smiled, her heart going out to the young woman. "You will be safe, I promise you".

Mia quickly arranged for a safe house and protection for Emily, making sure she was secure before leaving her. As she walked back to her car, her mind was racing with the new information.

She knew she had to get to Detective John with this evidence, but she also knew that she couldn't trust everyone in the police department. There could be leaks, or even worse, corruption.

Mia decided to take a risk and go straight to the top. She called the Chief of Police, requesting a meeting with him personally.

To her surprise, he agreed to meet with her immediately.

As she arrived at his office, Mia could sense a heightened level of tension. The Chief, a stern-looking man with a no-nonsense attitude, greeted her curtly.

"What do you have, Mia?" he asked, his eyes narrowing.

Mia took a deep breath and laid out the evidence, telling him everything Emily had shared.

"Hmm, I hope this is gotten from a rightful source? Cause I won't give room to false information". He asked with a commanding tone.

"Yes sir, it was gotten from one of his staff. It's the truth and there is evidence backing this."

"Alright go on then." The chief said.

The Chief listened intently, his expression growing grimmer by the minute.

When she finished, he nodded thoughtfully. "I think it's time we brought Marcus Black in for questioning. But we need to be careful. If he's involved, he won't go down without a fight."

Mia nodded, a sense of satisfaction washing over her. She knew she was one step closer to the truth.

Chapter 3 THE ACCIDENT

Mia walked to where her car was parked, she noticed a black camry behind her. She felt tense because she hadn't seen such an occurrence. Mia's heart raced as she reached for her car key to get into the car. She immediately rolled up her windows, locked the car doors and started the engine. She pulled away with great speed but the black camry followed her.

Mia's heart raced as she took a sharp turn, trying to escape from the car, but the car kept on pacing in the speed. Mia's heart raced as she thought of her next move.

Suddenly, the black camry pulled alongside with a fast speed. The driver's window rolled down and a masked man glared at her, pointing a gun towards her "Back off Mia, this isn't your story."

Mia was drowned in fear, she bent down her head escaping the bullet. Her world went dark as her car crashed into a tree. She had to swerve to a vehicle that suddenly appeared in her lane, but it was too late.

The masked man saw what had happened so he fled the scene in a hurry with his accomplices.

Mia's head spun, she tried to move but a severe pain shot through her body.

Mia was seen in a very critical condition, she was rushed to the hospital. The police arrived at the scene where the accident had happened to make an investigation. Detective John recognizes Mia, he then rushes to tell the cop in charge.

"Hi! Detective John, you look tense. Is anything wrong?" Detective Charles said..

"Yes, that lady involved in an accident is the journalist? Detective John said, his heart racing like someone who escaped death.

"Who are you talking about?? Charles said in curiosity..

"That's Mia, the well known journalist" John said in a loud tone.

"What?? Mia!!! How did she end up there? I hope she's alright. Charles said, in a shocked tone....

Mia opened her eyes only to find out she's in a hospital. She turned around and saw Detective John by her side, his face etched with worry...

Mia, you've been in an accident. You've got some serious injuries, but you're going to be okay. The doctor assured me that.

Mia tried to speak, but her voice was barely heard. "I saw them, they attacked me."

"I know Mia, relax the police will take care of everything. The culprit will be arrested." John said with assurance in his voice.

Mia's eyes closed, her body responded to the pain medication. Detective John was there for her since she had no family or loved ones.

As she drifted in and out of consciousness, Mia's thoughts were filled with fragmented images: Emily's frightened face, the mysterious Black Camry, the sound of shattering glass, the gun pointed at her.. .

Suddenly, Mia's eyes snapped open. She remembered something crucial. "The documents...Emily gave me...they're in my bag..."

Detective John leaned in, his expression urgent. "Mia, where's your bag? We need those documents."

Mia's gaze fell upon her mangled car, wrapped around the tree trunk. "It's...it's in the car..."

Detective John rushed out of the room, leaving Mia to her thoughts. She knew she had to get better, for the sake of the story and for Emily's safety.

But as she lay there, a creeping sense of unease settled in. Had they gotten to her bag? Were the documents safe?

Detective John returned with a sigh of relief on his face. "We got the documents, Mia. They're safe."

Mia's eyes closed, a wave of relief washing over her. She knew she had to protect Emily and the story, no matter what.

As she drifted off to sleep, Detective John's voice whispered in her ear. "We'll get to the bottom of this, Mia. I promise."

The next morning, Mia woke up to find a familiar face by her bedside - her colleague Rachel.

"Mia, I'm so glad you're okay," Rachel said, her voice trembling. "We were all so worried about you."

Mia smiled weakly. "I'm fine, Rachel. Just a few bumps and bruises."

Rachel's expression turned serious. "Mia, we need to talk about the story. We can't let them silence you."

Mia's eyes locked onto Rachel's. "I know. We have to get the truth out there."

Rachel nodded, determination in her eyes. "We'll work remotely, get the story ready for publication. But we need to be careful, Mia. They're watching us."

Mia's grip on Rachel's hand tightened. "I know. But we can't back down now. We have to expose them."

Just then, Detective John entered the room, a somber look on his face. "Ladies, we have a problem. The documents you retrieved...they're encrypted. We can't access them."

Mia's heart sank. Without the documents, they had no proof, no story.

But Rachel's expression turned thoughtful. "I think I can help with that. I know someone who's good with encryption. Someone I trust."

Mia's eyes lit up with hope. "Who is it?"

Rachel smiled. "My childhood friend. His name is Alex, and he's a genius with codes."

Detective John raised an eyebrow. "I don't know, Rachel. We can't just bring in someone we don't know."

But Rachel was insistent. "I vouch for him, Detective. He's the only one who can help us now."

Mia nodded, making the decision. "Let's do it. We need those documents decrypted."

Rachel pulled out her phone and dialled a number. "I'll call Alex now. He'll meet us at the office."

As Rachel waited for Alex to arrive, Mia couldn't shake off the feeling that they were running out of time. The culprits could strike again, and next time, they might not be so lucky.

"He's on his way," Rachel said, hanging up.

Mia's mind raced with possibilities. Who was this Alex, and could they really trust him? What if he's among our enemies?

An hour later, Alex arrived . Rachel welcomed him, revealing a tall, lanky man with messy brown hair and thick-framed glasses.

"Alex, thanks for coming," Rachel said, ushering him in.

Alex nodded, his eyes scanning the room. "What's the situation?"

Rachel filled him in, handing over the encrypted documents. Alex's eyes lit up as he began working on his laptop.

Mia watched, fascinated, as his fingers flew across the keyboard. "This is some serious encryption," Alex muttered. "But I think I can crack it."

Detective John paced the room, his phone buzzing with updates from the investigation. "We need to move fast," he said. "The longer we take, the more danger we're in."

Alex nodded, not looking up. "Almost there...yes! I've got it."

The room fell silent as Alex opened the decrypted files. Mia's eyes scanned the documents, her heart racing with every revelation.

"It's worse than we thought," she whispered. "They're involved at the highest levels."

Rachel's face is set in determination. "We have to get this story out now."

But as they began making plans, a loud crash echoed from outside. The lights flickered, and the room plunged into darkness.
