Looking at the content of the paper in her hands, a smile sits on her face. She starts to contemplate calling Caleb. As she starts the internal fight of whether to just wait until he gets back home or to call him and tell him, her phone starts ringing.
The caller ID says 'My Hubby'. She hurriedly picks it up and places it on her ear.
"Come to the office". The husky voice says through the phone. Before she can get a word in, he hangs up on her.
A wind of disappointment sits on her face briefly before she remembers the good news in her hands. She takes this as a good thing. At least now, she can tell him in person and see his reaction. She starts imagining scenarios of him kissing and carrying her up in joy.
She leaves the hospital and orders a cab. While on the journey to his office, she thinks about how this child could change the whole dynamics between them. However, this was even a mistake because it was a result of a drunken night they had.
That was the first time since they got married two years ago that she had been in bed with him. The marriage was arranged by his family. He had no other choice but to go through with the whole arrangement.
But throughout the entire two years they spent together, he never once made an effort to treat her like his wife. If anything, she was the human form of trash to him.
Although now, there's bound to be a change. After all, it's his flesh and blood. She arrives at his five-story building office and goes straight to his office.
After knocking on his door and not receiving a response, she opens it. Caleb is sitting in front of his mahogany desk with his head bent over signing some documents.
A smile sits on her lips while she takes a good look at her handsome husband. However, he doesn't even acknowledge her presence.
She takes the hint and sits on one of the seats in front of him. She places her hand on her stomach with a smile on her face.
As she is about to speak, he throws a brown folder in front of her. She picks it up and holds it confused.
"What is this?". She asks him. He looks up and gives her an irritated look.
"You can read, can't you?". His answer takes her aback. Not willing to start arguing with him, she opens the folder.
Her eyes widen as she read the content of the folder. Her hands trembling, she raises her head to look at Sebastian, who has a mischievous smile on his face.
"You... what is this?". She says her voice shaking.
"Well, you read it. It is either you divorce me without a fuss or any drama or you face jail time for theft". He says with a smile on his face.
"I didn't steal anything. How could I? I don't even have access to anything! I don't have anything!". Tears begin to prick her eyes.
"That isn't what my records says..." He gives her a mock sympathetic tone.
"I have nothing to do with this! Why are you doing this?". Tears start rolling down her cheeks.
For a second, a flash of guilt appears in his eyes, but it disappears as soon as it comes, leaving her with questions about whether her mind is playing tricks.
"Don't you see? I just want a divorce from you. I'm sick of this". He waves his hand up and down gesturing to her.
"So you framed me to just get a divorce? Do you hate me that much?" She asks him, already feeling burned out.
"Yes, I do. So if you don't want to spend the rest of your life in jail for something you did not do, sign the divorce papers now and relocate abroad". She looks at him dumbfounded. Her mind refused to accept what was going on.
"So after two years, this is all I get?". He cackles at her question.
"This is all you get? I provided all you needed while you did your daily routine of sleeping, waking up, and eating every day. So just do me a favor and go abroad".
She contemplates arguing with him and trying to see if he would truly get her arrested but she also thinks about her child and what would happen to it.
She makes a silent vow to keep her child safe even though its father could care less.
"You will regret this. For two years, you treated me like absolute trash. You barely said two words to me per day. Yes, so what if you provided money? You never treated me with respect even once! You didn't even let me sleep in the same room with you!".
"Are you done?". He asked.
She sighs defeatedly.
Thinking about her lack of money, she decides to make the best out of this situation for her child.
"I don't even have any money to relocate anywhere. As you said, I never did anything. Well, maybe you left out the part that you told me not to work anymore. But it's fine". She looks away in pain.
After some minutes of silence, she hears a ping from her phone. She checks what caused the notification and her eyes widen in shock.
It is a credit alert from her bank. $100,000 was just transferred to her from Caleb.
Looking at the money, she finally comes to accept that this is the end of her marriage.
She wipes her tears and without saying a word, she takes the divorce papers from the table and a pen. A tear drops on the paper as she puts down her signature next to his. The fact that it has already been signed by him only makes it hurt even more.
"I have signed it. I will be out of the house today. Have a nice day and life". She stands up to leave quickly to avoid breaking down in front of him.
She manages to hold back her tears but as soon as she steps into the house, the dam breaks.
She covers her mouth to reduce the noise from her sobs. Her back against the door, she continues crying forgetting that the maids are around.
She decides to go to her room to avoid any unnecessary attention on her. As she stands up from the floor, she sees a familiar figure descending from the stairs.
Confusion seeps into her facial expression as she sees her cousin, Sophia, take a seat on the sofa. Sophia is looking at her with a victorious smirk on her lips.
"What are you doing here Sophia?". She walks to where she is sitting.
"I see that my fiancee has given you the divorce papers. I hope you signed them without a fuss". Sophia looks at her nails, admiring the acrylic designs on them without a care in the world.
Ava stumbles back in shock. Her mouth opens and closes a few times in surprise.
"What do you mean by fiancee?". She sputters out.
"I knew you were lazy but I didn't know you were also dumb. What does fiancee mean?". She says with a snare.
"So you knew about all this? How could you do this to me?!!". She shouts at her.
"Oh darling. Let me remind you if you have forgotten. I am the one that was supposed to get married to Caleb in the first place but because of your father, you were able to steal him". She says with so much disgust as if Ava is the other woman in the relationship.
"But...but you told me you were okay with it..."
"Yeah I was. Until he became a billionaire anyways. So I decided to get my man back". At her statement, Ava doesn't even whether to laugh or to cry at her thought process.
"So basically, you want to be with him now because of his money? Aren't those traits of a gold digger?". Sophia starts to chuckle at her question.
"You are quite funny, you know? I don't reckon that you called yourself a gold digger when you took his $100,000 in exchange for a divorce". Ava's jaw goes slack.
"How do you know that?"
"Damn, she is dumb", she facepalms.
"Dear cousin, I planned everything. He just did as he was told. I don't know why he ended up giving you so much money because that wasn't what we agreed on but I guess he must have pitied your jobless, penniless ass and decided to add more money. Did you perhaps get down on him?".
She asks with a sly smirk. Unable to handle her anger anymore, Ava moves towards her and in one swift move, lands a hot slap on her face that resounds in the house.
Sophia's face turns red immediately. Her eyes burn in fury as she raises her hand to touch the cheek that was assaulted.
"You bitch!!! How dare you?!". She yells at the top of her voice, drawing the attention of the maids in the house, who starts coming out to watch the drama.
"I always regarded you as a sister even though you were always nasty to me. I still can't believe you are behind all these!". Tears start pricking the back of her eyes.
"You were always a thorn in my flesh! You always stole everything I wanted! I hate you to death!". A sob escapes from Ava's mouth but she quickly wipes her tears away.
"Then no problem. I will leave you and your 'fiancee'. I will go far away from both of you. I hate both of you!". She sidesteps and heads upstairs.
Surprisingly, Sophia doesn't say anything as she leaves. Ava enters the room she has regarded as a safe space for two years.
With tears streaming down her cheeks uncontrollably, she starts packing her clothes and personal property into two suitcases.
After packing up, she stands in front of her mirror and places a hand on her stomach. With a wistful smile, she looks down on her stomach.
"Hey, little one. It looks like we are alone now. On the good side, we have each other. Although your father may not care about you, I promise to stand in for both sides. I will love you with all my heart. You are now my family and I am yours. I love you ". She wipes a stray tear and goes back to the bed to zip up her suitcase.
She carries both outside her room and calls for one of the butlers to help her with them. A minute later, one of the butlers arrives in front of her with a sympathetic smile.
As he carries the first suitcase down the stairs, Sophia sits on the sofa feeling victorious and on top of the world. To her, a slap is a little price to pay to be Caleb Reed's wife.
"Hurry up! I don't want her in this house for another minute". The butler carries the second suitcase down and Ava follows behind.
Ava briefly contemplates messing with her mind and telling her that she is pregnant. But she figures that her cousin could try to cause her and the baby harm to get what she wants.
The Uber she ordered is just two minutes away so she starts dragging the suitcases towards the door. The butler helps her carry it outside.
When she gets to the door, she pauses to look around the house she had called home. Over the years, she was always consoled with the fact that she now had a home that she could call hers without a shadow of doubt.
Turns out it would be taken away from her the same way other things have been taken from her. Her parents, the house she grew up in, her home, and now, even her husband.
She makes a silent vow to protect her child no matter what it takes. The Uber driver calls her to inform her that he is there.
The butler helps her get the suitcases into the boot and bids her goodbye.
They drive off with Ava looking at the side mirror to see the house. With a deep sigh, she accepts her new reality.
FOUR YEARS LATER
"We are having some scenes shot in America". Her manager says.
She abruptly stands up in shock at his statement.
"America why? I didn't see that in the script you gave me". She rushes to him with the script in her hands.
Ava starts flipping crazily trying to prove to him that there is no mention of any scenes being shot in America.
Her manager, on the other hand, looks her at weirdly. He collects the script from her.
She looks at him, shocked, as he waves the script high above her head. Defeatedly, she sighs.
"Take a deep breath sista! What's all the fuss for? The director changed the location at the last minute, claiming that it would give the scene more depth, whatever that means." Ava stalks to a chair and sits down in a plop with an upset look on her face.
"It's not that." She releases a breath. Chris comes to stand in front of her, resting his behind on the edge of the table with his hands crossed in front of him.
"Then what is it?". He asks her worried.
"I don't want to run into him". She finally admits.
"Who? Oh, your ex-husband. I forgot he lives there".
Ava gives him the side eye.
"What? It's not my fault I don't keep useless men in my mind ". He says with a pout which makes a chuckle escape from Ava.
"But seriously, I don't want to run into him, and you know I can't leave my daughter behind in Canada, so that is another risk." Her laughter dies down.
"Well, on the good side, the shoot for that scene will take a month at most. You can keep away from his area until then".
"You, that will almost be impossible. The shoot will draw attention, and it is only a matter of time before he knows I'm in the city". She puts her hand under her chin.
"Girl, what are so afraid of? He was the one who treated you badly. You have left him for three years now. It's about time to use this shoot to get closure from that chapter". He puts a hand on her shoulder.
She nods and pats his hand gratefully. She can remember how he got her to where she is today.
When she relocated to Canada four years ago, she went to live with one of her friends, Marianna, who is based in Canada till she gave birth to her daughter, Aurora.
Although she had more than enough money to take care of them comfortably for more than three years, she knew she had to do something profitable with the money or she would lose all of it.
So, with the help of her friend, Marianna, she opened a boutique where she sold stylish clothing when Aurora was 6 months old. When she noticed that she wasn't getting many customers, she was advised to start using social media to advertise her goods.
After getting the hang of the gram, she started posting her clothing. She started enjoying the thrill and trends and decided to try one of the acting challenges.
With the universe's sense of humor, she tried acting a scene from a famous trend, and the next morning, her video had blown up.
Ava had woken up the next morning to Marianna's excited squeals. Groggily, she asked her what happened. Instead of an actual answer, Marianna shoved the phone in her face.
Ava's business account which had a measly 100 followers, was now spotting 10k followers. Her acting video was now at 1 million views.
Her eyes widened as she saw the various comments. With a huge smile on her face, she prepared for the day with her daughter and headed to her boutique.
She had barely opened her boutique that morning when ten women entered. They started complimenting her and her dresses. That was how her business started booming. She took it as sheer luck and decided to make the best of it by continuing to put out acting videos with the different dresses she was selling.
Barely a month later, she was seriously contemplating an expansion. She had even employed ten sales representatives and was now shipping to other countries.
Her boutique, Aurora's, which she named after her daughter, was fast becoming very popular in Canada.
It was on one of the days she was in the store looking at the new inventory that Chris Stone walked in, in all his handsome glory.
He walked up to her directly and told her that he wanted to manage her. Initially, she had turned him down, but after his fifth attempt and showing her that she had real talent for acting, she accepted.
She started it off as a side gig because she didn't need any more money than her boutique was already bringing for her.
After two months of being managed by Chris, her fame had grown twofold from what it was before.
After her first supporting role in a Hollywood series, she bagged an award at the end of her first year as an actress. Two years in, she finally got her first lead role, which skyrocketed her fame.
Her daughter even had to grow up on set because most times, when Marianna was not available, she had to take her along. Thankfully, Aurora was already attached to Chris by the time she turned two.
She had even picked up his bossy attitude. Chris never let her out of his sight and Aurora barely ever wanted to come down from his arms. They have a bond that even Ava envies.
Aurora is not in the office today because she wanted to go and play at the amusement park with Marianna's cousins who are in town.
"I don't know what to do. I will have to take Aurora along for the shoot and I don't want him to find out about her. I have to protect my kid from both of them". She puts her face into her hands.
