But things soon spiral out of control when her stepmother shows her true colours and the people at her new school are acting strange. Can Eva make sense of her new life and will she ever get to the bottom of the family secret that has been hidden from her?

Chapter 1 New Beginnings

Eva Smith sighed as the bus screeched to a stop. Looking out the window, she saw people waiting for their loved ones. She knew she was not going to be as lucky as them. Nobody would be waiting for her since nobody had wanted to tell since her mother had died in the accident her drug-addicted stepfather had caused. He had gone awol before the police could find him, leaving Eva practically an orphan. Since she was only seventeen years old, she was still a child in the eyes of the law. That is how she had come to find herself back in the quiet town of Newpark.

Today would be the first time Eva met her biological father after ten years. Eva's parents divorced for reasons her mother never wanted to divulge. Eva had not seen her father since the day he walked out. At first, she received calls and letters, but that did not take long to fizzle out when her father met someone new. Eva could not help but feel worthless and unimportant. Of course, her mother had showered Eva with love. She worked hard to give her a great life. Eva never went without. She missed her mother so much. Wiping her eyes, she exited the bus and grabbed her small suitcase. It was all her life in one bag. She was exhausted from the long journey and wished someone had come to greet her. She looked around for a vacant taxi, but there were none. Noticing a blacked-out limousine, she sat at the taxi rank and decided to wait until one became free. She pulled out her mobile phone and texted her dad to tell him she was waiting for a taxi. No reply. She sighed and pulled her jacket tighter around her as a gush of wind suddenly blew. It was a cold day in the middle of November. Eva should be at home toasting marshmallows and sipping hot chocolate with her mother. She missed those nights. They often curl up on the sofa under a blanket and watch Netflix. The night her mother died, Eva stayed at her best friend Lara's house. The police turned up to inform her was the worst of her life, a time that would haunt her forever. She had no choice but to pack up and move halfway across the world to live with her father since he was her only living parent. He had sounded happy to have his daughter back, but Eva felt it was all fake. If he had wanted her in his life, why had he not made an effort over all those years? Eva was not the six-year-old little girl he would remember her as. He had a new life now with his wife and their twins, Eddy and Millie. Eva was confident that she would be nothing more than an inconvenience. That is why she was determined to finish school and return to England. There was nothing for her here. Eva looked up as the black door of the limousine opened up, and a young man around thirty got out. He was wearing a suit and a matching black tie. His eyes started right across at Eva. She looked around, thinking perhaps he was waiting for someone else. Nobody was there, and the bus took a long time. Suddenly uncomfortable, Eva grabbed her phone from her bag and called her best friend. She did not pick up, so Eva decided to call her boyfriend, Dan. Hearing his voice on the other end of the phone made her feel a little better. "Oh hey, what's up?" He said, not seeming very glad to hear from her. Eva was about to tell him how much she missed him when she heard a familiar voice in the background. Lara? What was her best friend doing with Dan? They hated each other's guts. Lara had never approved of their relationship, and Dan often would say she was jealous of their closeness. "Dan, what's Lara doing there?" Eva mumbled; she noticed the man still staring at her. The phone went silent for a moment. Eva swore she could hear giggling, and then Dan said he had to go and would call her back later. Eva could not believe what had just happened. The tears were falling on her face now, but she did not care. The loss of her mother and the betrayal of her best friend and boyfriend were all too much. She forgot about the stranger until he stood in front of her. "Excuse me, Miss?" he sat beside her, causing her to jump in fright. "What do you want? Please don't hurt me." she wept, becoming hysterical. The man's eyes widened in disbelief as the young woman lost her mind at him. "I won't hurt you, and I wanted to help." He explained, pointing to the limousine. "I saw there were no taxis, and it doesn't look like you were getting picked up any time soon. Plus, it's freezing out here." He gestured to the blanket in his hands, and Eva nodded gratefully. He draped it around her shoulders, and Eva instantly felt warmer. "Would you like a lift?" Eva figured she could at least get out of the cold sooner. She had no idea how long she would wait for a taxi to arrive, and she was already ice cold. "I don't want to put you out or anything." Eva didn't want to sound too desperate even though she was. The man smiled and held out a hand. "Names Mitchell." Eva blushed and shook his hand. "Eva," she replied. Mitchell helped her up and took her suitcase in his other hand. They walked to the limousine and got in. Eva buckled herself in while Mitchell stared the engine up. "My boss is at a meeting, so that it will be a while. I'm his driver." he flashed a toothy grin her way. Eva looked around and felt amazed at how anyone could afford such a lavish lifestyle. She wondered if his boss were a famous singer or celebrity. They drove silently, and a few moments passed until Mitchell stopped outside a massive house with a gated driveway. Eva looked surprised and checked the address several times before realising this was the correct place. Her father must be a millionaire to afford this. Mitchell helped unload new belongings. He smiled when she thanked him, and he hesitated for a moment. "Please, keep safe." He said before driving off and leaving her alone on the driveway. Eva was unsure what to make of it all. Suddenly the gate beeped and opened to reveal a middle-aged woman with blonde curly hair standing on the other side. She was dressed up in a white blouse and black knee-length skirt, and high heels. Eva recognised her as her father's wife: her stepmother, Tina. She looked Eva up and down before inviting her to come on in. "Eva? Come on in. It will be a pleasure to have you with us at last." Tina said with such fake excitement it made Eva feel even more slightly awkward. "Your father will be back soon with the twins," she said, leading the way. Eva followed and noticed the hundred happy smiling photos hanging on the perfectly white-painted walls. She took a deep breath and promised to make the best of this situation.

Chapter 2 Meeting her siblings

Almost an hour before, the twins and Eva's father walked through the door. Eva had awkwardly sat on the sofa with Tina glaring silently at her. Eva did not want to be here, and it was obvious the feeling was mutual. The twins rushed through the door and bundled Eva, causing her to break out into a huge smile for the first time in forever. Eva's dad stood in the shadow of the doorway, studying the scene before him. He noticed how annoyed his wife looked, sitting with a blank look on her face. The twins, on the other hand, were full of excitement and happiness to see their big sister.

Tim's eyes fell onto the tall slim young teenager, and she was beautiful. Her long brown hair was plaited in two French plaits, and she had her mother's smile. Tim felt saddened that he had missed out on so much of his daughter's life. He was determined to make up for it now, though. "Everly Janice Smith, wow, look how you've grown. Almost Taller than your old man, I see." he entered the room and held his hands to his smiling daughter. She looked up from the twins and gasped at the sight of her father. He was just as she had always remembered him. He was grinning with happiness, and Eva was sure she saw a tear in his eyes. "Hi, Dad, long time no see." she smiled back at him as he embraced her for a long-awaited hug. She was the image of her mother, and Tim took a deep breath as he tried I compose himself. He had always loved his daughter and his ex-wife. Things had happened, and he had no choice but to leave. His daughters' mother had made him swear to keep away and never tell the actual reason. Looking at his daughter in the flesh and holding her in his arms made him feel complete. It did not matter that his current wife was throwing daggers his way. Of course, she did not want Eva to come to their home. She was a reminder that Tim would only ever love that one woman-Eva's mother. "Mummy, what for dinner?" the twins jumped up and down excitedly as Tim suggested they eat together. Tina did not seem too keen on the idea but agreed because she did not want her twins to be upset. Eddie and Millie rushed to their bedrooms to get changed and dragged Eva up with them. Tim followed. "Do you want to show your sister her new room?" the twins nodded, and Eva chuckled at their enthusiasm. Eva was shocked when she saw her bedroom, and it was on the second floor, just down from the twins. She had her bathroom and a huge double bed. Next to it was a desk and a brand-new MacBook laptop. Eva was gobsmacked. Millie showed Eva to a walk-in closet packed with clothes and shoes. Eva turns to her father in disbelief. "Is all this for me?" she cried. Tim nodded that it was. He felt a surge of guilt fill him that his daughter had had to leave her life behind, and wanted something to make her feel at home. He had made sure she had everything that she would possibly need. " it doesn't make up for my absence in your life, but I hope it will help you to feel a little more comfortable here since this is your home now, too." he told her. "Wow, thanks so much." she stepped into the walk-in closet and started to pull out clothes, choosing what to wear. She smiled at her little sister, who insisted on helping her choose a beautiful necklace with the letter e. "You look beautiful," Tim said as Eva walked down the stairs half an hour later. Tina was behind him, and her eyes almost popped out when she saw Eva. Even she could not deny her stepdaughter was stunning. She was still unhappy that her husband's daughter had come to stay with them. She worried it would disrupt her twin's routine and what her friends would say about this girl being in her home. With a mother like hers, she was bound to become a disgraceful woman. Tina had never liked Tims's ex-wife. She knew he loved her even after all this time. It was only because her father owned such a well-off company that Tim was doing so well financially. He had helped Tim so much by giving him an opportunity of a lifetime. Tina did not feel that Eva deserved to benefit from such wealth since her twins should be in line, not her. It did not matter to Tina that Eva was also his daughter. She was not Tina's blood, so why should she get such luxury? Tina watched in jealousy as Tim could not take his eyes off his beautiful daughter. Tina hated that she would no longer have her husband's full attention. If she had her way, then Eva would be on to next flight back to England. "Shall we go?" Tim held his arm out to Eva, who grinned as she slipped her arm into his. Tina followed behind them with a fed-up look while the twins rushed off in front. Eddie and Millie were arguing over who would sit next to Eva, much to their mother's horror. "Eddie and Millie, do you not know better than to behave in such a manner?" Tina roared, causing the twins to stand up straight immediately. Eva was taken aback by their mother's military style of parenting. "Let's go." Tim rolled his eyes at Eva, causing her to giggle and gain a dagger look from Tina. They piled into the car and buckled themselves in. Tina was silent for the whole journey, and Tim decided to let her be; he would not let her destroy his night.

Chapter 3 Sibling bonds

Eva woke to her alarm going off; she groaned as she pulled the duvet over her head and realised today was the day she started at her brand-new school. Only one year! That's all it would be. Then she could go home where she longed to be more than anything. Eva had enjoyed their evening out last night; although Tina had not precisely made her feel welcomed, the twins certainly made up for their mother's hostility.

Quickly getting up and throwing her feet over the edge of the bed, she felt for her favourite fluffy slippers and shrieked when a hand grabbed her ankle, and she heard two muffled giggles from underneath the bed. Eva rolled her eyes and grinned in amusement at her twin siblings trying to prank her like that. It was nice to have a little brother and sister around. "Oh, I spy two little monsters that need a good tickle." she teased as they shrieked with laughter and jumped on her messy bed. Millie was thrilled to have a big sister to look up to, while Eddie was delighted to have someone else to spoil him. "Come on, kiddies, before the big bad wolf catches you," Eva whispered to them, referring to their mother, who would probably have Eva's guts for garters if she found the twins not getting ready for school. They did as they were told, and Eva smiled as she closed her bedroom door. Catching a glimpse of herself in the mirror, she scowled and jumped in the shower. Once she was showered and dried, she got dressed in the clothes that she had already prepared the night before-a cute pair of denim shirts and a white blouse. Then, choosing to wear her hair in a high ponytail, she applied a little mascara and black eyeliner. Not too much to be classed as over-the-top, though. Standing back and admiring herself, she nodded in approval before grabbing her bag and picking up her mobile from the bedside unit. She checked, and when she saw no messages or missed calls from her friends back home, she sighed and slid the phone into her bag. She had thought they would have at least asked how she was or wished her good luck for her first day at her new school. It was like she had never existed in their lives. Eva wished her mother could be here. Then she would not have had to leave everything she knew and loved so much. She walked down the stairs and licked her lips hungrily as the smell of delicious pancakes reached her nose. She couldn't wait to get that in her, and her tummy rumbled in agreement. "Good morning." she grinned happily as she entered the kitchen where the twins were already seated. Tina sat opposite, sipping at her mug of coffee, and didn't even acknowledge Eva. Her father had already left for work, so it was only the four of them and the cleaner who had just arrived to complete her daily cleaning job. Tina nodded at the cleaning lady, who waved at them as she passed through to the next room. Tina picked up the keys to her car and jingled them. "Any pancakes left for me?" Eva eyed the cooker hungrily and was disappointed when she saw they were all gone. "Sorry, I didn't realise that you were still here," Tina said, but Eva could see she was lying. She hadn't been bothered to prepare anything for Eva since it was obvious that she did not like having her under the same roof. "It's ok, and you can have mine." Eddie held out his half-eaten pancake to his older sister. She smiled at his generosity and squeezed his cheek. He was so adorable and loving. "No, you eat your breakfast. I'm sure Eva is capable of fixing her breakfast. Now hurry up before we are late." Tina glared at Eva. "It's ok, thanks anyway, kiddo. I wasn't that hungry anyway." Eva smiled down at Eddie and grabbed herself an apple from the fruit bowl. "Ok." he shrugged his shoulders and went back to eating. Millie had already finished by now and for down to wash her hands and face. "Come on." Tina huffed impatiently and looked at her watch. "Ok, come on, guys. Let's go." Eva helped them grab their bags and opened the front door. Tina frowned but didn't say a word. The twins quickly jumped into their seats and buckled themselves in. Eva checked that they were in before sliding into the front passenger seat. Tina ignored her stepdaughter and started the car. The gates opened, and they arrived at the twin's school. They said their goodbyes and ran to their classrooms, leaving Eva alone with their mother. "Thanks for the lift." Eva glanced across at Tina, who only nodded in response. She drummed her fingers on the steering wheel and waited for Eva to vacate the car. Once she was sure she had gone out of sight, she dialled her friend Sandy's number. After just a couple of rings, she picked up. "This girl is too nice. It's sickening," Tina complained as her friend answered. "Give it time. She will not want to stick around for long," Sandy assured her. Tina hoped that she was right. "The twins adore her. She's going to make them forget me, isn't she?" Tina whined that she sounded immature, but her friend didn't want to upset her. "No, of course not. You are their mother but don't forget she has just lost her mother. I can't imagine she is out to destroy your bond with the twins." Sandy told her. "Let's talk later. I need to get to work." Tina sighed heavily before hanging up. She looked up and saw that Eva had entered the building. She checked her mirrors before leaving the parking spot and returned to the road. Her workplace was only a few minutes down the road, and she decided to stop off for a coffee on the way.
