Chapter 1 The Ambush

Author's POV

"Where is he?" Alistair growled, his eyes darting through the shadows of the forest.

"I don't know!" Raiden whispered back, panic creeping into his voice. "We've been waiting for hours. What if he's not coming?"

"He's coming," Alistair snapped. "He has to. I feel it."

Raiden shifted nervously. "What if it's a trap? Grayson isn't stupid."

"I know Grayson," Alistair's voice was sharp. "This is exactly where he'll show up."

A sudden rustling in the bushes made Raiden jump. "Did you hear that?"

Alistair didn't respond, his body tensing as he crouched lower. "Stay quiet."

The wind shifted, carrying a scent Alistair knew all too well. He gritted his teeth. "They're here."

Raiden's hand went to the hilt of his blade. "What do we do?"

"We fight."

Before Raiden could react, a low growl echoed from the trees. Alistair's muscles tightened, his eyes scanning the darkness. Three wolves stepped out, their eyes glowing in the moonlight.

"Well, well, well," came a voice Alistair hadn't heard in years. "Look who's still alive."

"Isaac," Alistair snarled, standing slowly. "I knew it'd be you."

Isaac grinned, stepping closer, his eyes gleaming with malice. "You didn't think you could come back without a welcome party, did you?"

"I'm not here to play games," Alistair's voice was cold. "Where's Grayson?"

Isaac chuckled. "Straight to the point. Always so serious, Alistair. You never learned, did you?"

Alistair's fists clenched. "Where is he?"

Isaac stepped even closer, his grin fading into a sneer. "You think you can waltz back in here and demand answers? After everything you left behind?"

"I didn't leave anything behind," Alistair's voice was low, dangerous. "It was taken from me."

Raiden shifted nervously beside him. "Alistair, we should leave. This doesn't feel right."

Alistair ignored him, his eyes never leaving Isaac. "I'm only going to ask one more time. Where is Grayson?"

Isaac's eyes flickered with amusement. "You think I'm just going to hand him over to you? Like old times?"

"If you know what's good for you, you will."

Isaac's laughter was cold, mocking. "You really haven't changed. Still the arrogant alpha, even after losing everything."

"I'm not here for you, Isaac," Alistair's voice was barely above a whisper. "I'm here for Selene."

At the mention of her name, Isaac's smile faltered, if only for a moment. "Selene? You still think about her?"

"I never stopped," Alistair growled.

Isaac stepped closer, his voice a mocking whisper. "You abandoned her. Left her to fend for herself."

"I didn't abandon anyone," Alistair snapped, fury burning in his chest. "You betrayed me. All of you."

"You couldn't lead," Isaac spat, his eyes narrowing. "Grayson took what was rightfully his. And you? You disappeared. You left her, Alistair. Left us all."

"Where is she?" Alistair's voice rose, the anger in him boiling over. "Tell me now, Isaac, or I'll-"

Isaac's grin returned, cold and full of venom. "You'll what? Kill me? You're outnumbered. Look around, Alistair."

Raiden tugged on Alistair's arm. "We should go. There's too many."

"Shut up, Raiden!" Alistair barked, his eyes locked on Isaac. "I'm not leaving until I get answers."

Isaac took another step forward, his wolves flanking him. "Answers? You want answers? Fine. Selene doesn't want to see you. She's moved on. She's with Grayson now."

Alistair's heart skipped a beat. "You're lying."

"Am I?" Isaac's grin widened. "She's with him, Alistair. Right where she belongs."

"You're lying!" Alistair roared, his control slipping. He lunged at Isaac, his fist connecting with Isaac's jaw in a powerful blow.

Isaac stumbled back, blood trickling from his lip. He wiped it away with the back of his hand, a twisted smile on his face. "I see you still have some fight left in you."

Raiden stepped forward, his voice trembling. "Alistair, we need to leave. Now."

Alistair didn't listen. His eyes were fixed on Isaac. "Where. Is. She?"

Isaac straightened, cracking his neck. "You'll never find her. Grayson made sure of that."

"I'll find her," Alistair growled. "And when I do, I'll tear him apart."

Isaac laughed again, but there was an edge to his voice now. "You? Tear him apart? Grayson's stronger than you'll ever be. You don't stand a chance."

"We'll see about that."

Isaac's smile faded, his expression turning cold. "This is your last chance, Alistair. Leave now, or die."

Alistair's eyes burned with fury. "Not without Selene."

Isaac's wolves growled, taking a step forward. "You're out of your mind. You think you can just walk in and take her back? She doesn't want you anymore."

Alistair's body trembled with rage, but before he could move, Raiden grabbed his arm. "Alistair, please. We're going to get killed!"

Alistair shook him off. "I'm not leaving."

"Then you're a dead man," Isaac snarled, shifting into his wolf form in a blink. His dark fur rippled as he growled, eyes glowing with menace.

Alistair stood his ground. "I'm not afraid of you."

Isaac lunged without warning, his claws aimed for Alistair's throat. Alistair dodged, just barely, his own body shaking with the urge to shift.

"Come on!" Raiden shouted, his voice filled with panic. "We can't fight them all!"

Alistair's eyes blazed as he ducked another swipe from Isaac's claws. "I'm not running."

Isaac laughed, a deep, menacing sound. "You should've stayed gone."

Alistair moved fast, grabbing Isaac's arm and twisting it with a sickening crack. Isaac howled in pain, but quickly shifted back to human form, grinning through the pain.

"You'll regret that," Isaac growled.

Raiden tugged on Alistair's sleeve again. "There's more coming. We need to go!"

Alistair hesitated for a split second, his grip on Isaac loosening. Isaac took the opportunity, shifting again and pulling away, disappearing into the trees.

"You won't win this!" Isaac's voice echoed through the forest, his taunting laughter lingering. "Grayson will destroy you. And when he does, I'll make sure she watches!"

Alistair's heart pounded in his chest, fury and frustration burning through him. Raiden grabbed his arm, pulling him away from the clearing.

"Alistair, we have to leave! There's more of them coming!"

Alistair clenched his fists, his eyes still searching the shadows for any sign of Isaac. "This isn't over."

Raiden pulled him harder. "It's going to be over if we don't get out of here now!"

Reluctantly, Alistair turned, following Raiden through the dense trees, his mind racing with thoughts of Selene. He couldn't let Isaac's words get to him. Selene couldn't be with Grayson. It was a lie. It had to be.

"We'll come back for her," Alistair muttered, his voice barely audible.

Raiden glanced back, panting as they ran. "If we survive this, maybe."

The forest seemed to close in around them, the howls of Grayson's wolves growing louder in the distance. Alistair's muscles ached, but his mind was sharper than ever.

"I'll find you, Selene," he whispered to himself, his resolve hardening. "I'll tear them all apart if I have to."

The howls were closer now, almost upon them. Raiden stumbled, nearly falling. "We're not going to make it!"

Alistair glanced back, his heart pounding. The wolves were gaining. They had to keep moving.

"We'll make it," Alistair growled, determination flooding through him. "I'm not done yet."

Chapter 2 Shadows in the Dark

Author's POV

"Did we lose them?" Raiden's voice was shaky, his breath coming in quick gasps.

"I don't know," Alistair muttered, his eyes darting around. "Keep moving."

Raiden stumbled over a branch, panting. "I can't. They're everywhere. I can hear them."

Alistair grabbed his arm. "Quiet! You'll get us killed."

Raiden leaned against a tree, trying to catch his breath. "We should have never come. I told you this was a bad idea."

Alistair's jaw clenched. "I didn't ask you to follow me, Raiden."

"You didn't give me a choice!" Raiden snapped, eyes wide with fear. "Now we're being hunted."

Alistair stayed silent for a moment, listening to the faint howls in the distance. "We're not hunted yet. But if you don't shut up, we will be."

Raiden swallowed hard. "Do you really think we can get out of here?"

"We will. Just stay close." Alistair scanned the forest, every shadow feeling like it was moving. His instincts screamed at him to stay alert. "They're out there, but they're not here yet."

Raiden shook his head. "What if Isaac comes back? He hates you, Alistair. He's not going to let us walk away."

"I know," Alistair said quietly. "He wants me dead."

Raiden's voice shook. "Then why didn't he kill you? He had the chance."

Alistair looked at Raiden, his eyes hard. "Because he wants me to suffer first."

Raiden's hands trembled. "We need to get out of here. Now."

"We will," Alistair replied, his voice firm. "But I need answers first."

Raiden frowned. "Answers? What answers?"

Alistair's gaze turned cold. "Isaac knows where Selene is. He slipped up back there."

Raiden blinked. "You think she's alive?"

"I don't think," Alistair growled. "I know. And I'm going to find her."

Raiden stared at him. "And what if Isaac lied? What if she's..."

"She's not dead," Alistair snapped. "Isaac's hiding something. I could see it."

Raiden sighed, wiping sweat from his forehead. "You're risking our lives for someone who might not even be alive."

Alistair shot him a sharp look. "She's alive. I can feel it."

Raiden said nothing for a moment, then shook his head. "You're crazy."

"Maybe," Alistair muttered. "But I'm not leaving without her."

The wind rustled through the trees, making Raiden jump. "What if Grayson catches us first?"

Alistair's eyes hardened. "Then we kill him."

Raiden's mouth opened in shock. "Kill Grayson? Are you out of your mind?"

Alistair's voice was steady. "He took everything from me. He's not walking away from this."

Raiden's voice lowered to a whisper. "He's stronger than you, Alistair. You know that."

Alistair's lips curled in a grim smile. "We'll see."

A twig snapped nearby, and both men froze.

"What was that?" Raiden whispered, eyes wide.

Alistair motioned for silence, holding up a hand. His heart raced as he listened, every muscle tensing. The forest was too quiet now. Too still.

Raiden took a step closer to him. "They're close, aren't they?"

Alistair nodded slowly. "Very close."

Another snap, this time louder. Alistair's eyes narrowed. "Get ready."

Raiden swallowed hard, pulling out his blade. "You think it's Isaac?"

"Could be," Alistair muttered. "Or someone worse."

A low growl echoed from the darkness. Raiden's breath hitched. "We're dead."

"Shut up," Alistair growled. "We're not dead yet."

The growl grew louder, closer. Raiden gripped his knife tighter, his hands shaking. "I don't want to die here, Alistair."

"You won't," Alistair said, his voice low. "Not if you listen to me."

Raiden glanced at him, panic in his eyes. "What do we do?"

Alistair's voice was calm. "Stay close. Don't run. If we split up, they'll pick us off."

Raiden nodded, his face pale. "Okay."

The growl came again, closer than before. Alistair's eyes flicked toward the sound. "They're circling us."

Raiden's breathing quickened. "What do they want?"

Alistair's voice was a whisper. "To kill us."

Raiden cursed under his breath. "Great."

Alistair's eyes were sharp, his body tense. "We'll fight them off. Don't panic."

"I'm already panicking," Raiden hissed. "How are we supposed to fight them? There's too many!"

Alistair didn't respond. He crouched low, ready for the attack he knew was coming.

Suddenly, from the shadows, a wolf lunged at them, its teeth bared.

"Now!" Alistair shouted, shoving Raiden aside and spinning to meet the attack. He barely dodged the wolf's fangs, landing a punch to its side. The wolf growled in pain but didn't back down.

Raiden screamed, scrambling to his feet. "Alistair!"

"Focus!" Alistair barked, throwing the wolf off him and spinning around to face the others.

Three more wolves appeared from the trees, their eyes glowing in the darkness. They circled, growling, watching.

Raiden stood frozen, his knife shaking in his hand. "We're not going to make it."

Alistair growled, shifting slightly to shield Raiden. "Stay behind me."

Raiden's voice shook. "There's too many."

"I've faced worse," Alistair said, his eyes locked on the wolves.

The lead wolf growled, its muscles tensing. It was ready to strike. Alistair braced himself.

Suddenly, a voice rang out from the trees. "That's enough!"

The wolves froze, their growls dying down. Alistair's eyes narrowed as a figure stepped out from the shadows.

"Isaac," Alistair spat, fury rising in his chest.

Isaac grinned. "Did you really think I'd let them kill you? Not yet, anyway."

Alistair's fists clenched. "You're playing a dangerous game, Isaac."

Isaac chuckled. "Oh, I'm not playing. I'm winning."

Raiden shifted nervously behind Alistair. "What does he want?"

Alistair ignored him, his eyes locked on Isaac. "What's this about? Where's Grayson?"

Isaac smirked. "Grayson's busy. He sent me to deal with you."

"Deal with me?" Alistair growled. "You couldn't deal with me if you tried."

Isaac's smile widened. "Oh, I'm not here to fight, Alistair. Not yet. I just came to deliver a message."

Alistair's eyes narrowed. "I'm not interested in anything you have to say."

Isaac chuckled softly. "You will be. Trust me."

Alistair took a step forward, his voice low and threatening. "Where is she?"

Isaac's expression didn't change, but something flickered in his eyes. "Selene? Oh, she's... safe."

Alistair's heart skipped a beat. "You're lying."

"Am I?" Isaac's voice was smooth, but his grin was cruel. "Why would I lie?"

"Because you're afraid of me," Alistair growled. "You always were."

Isaac's eyes darkened. "Afraid of you? Don't flatter yourself, Alistair."

Alistair took another step closer. "Where is she?"

Isaac sighed dramatically. "Always so impatient. She's fine. That's all you need to know."

Alistair's fists tightened. "You're not leaving until you tell me where she is."

Isaac raised an eyebrow. "And what are you going to do? Kill me?"

"If I have to," Alistair muttered.

Isaac chuckled again. "You wouldn't kill me. You need me."

Alistair's eyes narrowed. "I need nothing from you."

"Oh, but you do." Isaac's voice was soft, almost mocking. "You need me to find her."

Raiden whispered, "Alistair, we should leave."

Alistair ignored him, stepping even closer to Isaac. "Tell me where she is."

Isaac's smile faded slightly. "She doesn't want to see you."

Alistair's heart pounded. "You don't know that."

Isaac's grin returned. "Oh, but I do. Grayson made sure of it."

"Grayson?" Alistair growled, his anger rising. "What did he do?"

Isaac took a step back, his grin widening. "You'll find out soon enough."

Alistair lunged forward, but Isaac stepped back into the shadows, disappearing with a mocking laugh. The wolves followed, their glowing eyes fading into the darkness.

Raiden exhaled sharply, his body shaking. "That was too close."

Alistair stood still, his fists trembling with rage

Chapter 3 Selene's Echo

Author's POV

"She's still alive!" Alistair shouted, pacing back and forth. His mind was racing, his voice shaking with both anger and hope.

Raiden, sitting on a fallen log, stared at him. "You don't know that, Alistair."

"I do!" Alistair snapped. "Isaac wouldn't have mentioned her if she wasn't. He slipped up."

Raiden sighed, rubbing his face. "Or maybe he's playing with your head. He knows how to get under your skin."

Alistair stopped pacing, his eyes burning. "I'll find her. I'm not giving up."

Raiden frowned. "And what if it's a trap? Isaac could've said that just to lure you into something worse."

Alistair clenched his fists. "I don't care. I have to take that chance."

Raiden stood up, stepping toward him. "We barely made it out of there, Alistair. You're risking everything."

Alistair shook his head. "I can't stop now. Not when I know she's out there."

Raiden hesitated. "Do you really think she's with Grayson?"

Alistair's jaw tightened. "If she is, I'll get her back."

Raiden raised an eyebrow. "And how do you plan to do that? Walk right into Grayson's den?"

"If I have to," Alistair said, his voice steady.

Raiden sighed again, shaking his head. "You're gonna get yourself killed."

"I'd rather die trying to save her than live doing nothing," Alistair muttered.

Raiden watched him for a long moment, then finally spoke. "Alright. What's the plan?"

Alistair looked at him, surprised. "You're coming with me?"

Raiden shrugged. "Someone has to keep you from doing something stupid."

Alistair smirked, but his eyes were still filled with determination. "Thanks."

Raiden grumbled. "Don't thank me yet. We're probably both going to die."

Alistair turned toward the path leading deeper into the woods. "Let's go."

Raiden followed, muttering under his breath, "Great. This is going to end well."

As they walked through the trees, the silence between them grew thick. Alistair's mind raced with thoughts of Selene. Memories of her laugh, her smile, flooded his mind. He couldn't lose her. Not again.

Raiden broke the silence. "Why would she be with Grayson?"

Alistair's voice was cold. "Because Grayson's a monster. He took everything from me."

"But why Selene?" Raiden pressed. "She's not like him."

Alistair's fists clenched. "He wanted to hurt me. And there's no better way than taking her."

Raiden hesitated. "What if she doesn't want to be saved?"

Alistair froze, turning to glare at him. "What did you say?"

Raiden raised his hands defensively. "I'm just saying, Alistair. It's been a long time. People change."

Alistair's eyes darkened. "Selene didn't choose him."

Raiden looked away. "I hope you're right."

They continued walking, the forest growing darker around them. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, made Raiden flinch. Alistair stayed focused, his eyes forward, his mind set on one thing, finding Selene.

Raiden finally broke the silence again. "So... what's the plan when we find Grayson?"

Alistair's voice was steady. "We take him down."

Raiden chuckled darkly. "You make it sound easy."

"It won't be," Alistair admitted. "But I don't care how hard it is. He's not getting away with this."

Raiden sighed. "And if Selene's with him?"

Alistair's jaw clenched. "Then I'll take her back."

Raiden frowned. "You're acting like it's that simple. What if she doesn't want to come with you?"

Alistair stopped, turning to face him. "Selene belongs with me."

Raiden met his gaze, his voice quiet. "And what if she doesn't think that anymore?"

Alistair's eyes hardened. "She will. She has to."

Raiden didn't argue, but the doubt was clear on his face. "Let's just hope Grayson doesn't tear us apart before we get to her."

"We'll make it," Alistair said firmly. "We have to."

Suddenly, the air grew colder. Raiden shivered, looking around. "Do you feel that?"

Alistair nodded, his eyes scanning the trees. "Something's coming."

Raiden's voice shook. "What is it?"

Alistair's eyes narrowed. "I don't know. Stay close."

A shadow moved between the trees, and both men tensed.

Raiden whispered, "Is it them?"

Alistair's heart pounded in his chest. "No. It's something else."

The shadow moved again, this time closer. Raiden stepped back. "I don't like this, Alistair."

"Neither do I," Alistair muttered, his voice low. "Get ready."

Suddenly, a figure stepped out from the trees. It was cloaked, the hood pulled low over its face. The figure stood still, watching them.

Raiden's voice trembled. "Who is that?"

Alistair growled, "I don't know."

The figure raised a hand, pointing directly at Alistair.

"What do you want?" Alistair demanded, his voice strong despite the tension in the air.

The figure didn't speak, but its finger slowly lowered to the ground.

Raiden glanced nervously at Alistair. "This is bad."

"Stay calm," Alistair said through gritted teeth.

The figure finally spoke, its voice low and haunting. "She's waiting."

Alistair's heart skipped a beat. "Who's waiting?"

The figure took a step closer, the air around them growing colder. "Selene."

Alistair's blood ran cold. "Where is she?"

The figure didn't answer, only tilted its head slightly, as if listening to something distant.

Raiden whispered, "What's happening?"

Alistair growled, stepping forward. "Where is she?"

The figure raised its hand again, pointing deeper into the forest. "She calls for you."

Alistair's heart raced. "I don't believe you."

The figure chuckled softly. "Believe what you wish. But she waits. In the dark."

Raiden grabbed Alistair's arm. "This feels like a trap, Alistair. We can't trust him."

Alistair shook him off, his eyes still on the figure. "Show me where."

The figure slowly turned, its cloak trailing along the ground as it began to walk away.

Raiden's voice was tight with fear. "Don't follow him."

Alistair's voice was low, filled with determination. "I don't have a choice."

Raiden shook his head, panic in his eyes. "This is insane!"

Alistair started following the figure, his steps steady. "I'm going to find her."

Raiden hesitated, then hurried after him. "You're going to get us both killed."

The figure led them deeper into the forest, where the trees grew thicker, their branches tangled overhead. The air was heavy, almost suffocating. Raiden's breathing grew ragged as he struggled to keep up.

"This is a trap," Raiden muttered. "I can feel it."

Alistair didn't respond. His mind was focused on one thing, Selene. If there was even a chance she was alive, he would find her.

The figure suddenly stopped in a small clearing. It turned to face them, its hood still hiding its face.

Alistair stepped forward. "Where is she?"

The figure didn't answer. Instead, it slowly raised its hand again, pointing to the ground at Alistair's feet.

Raiden frowned. "What is he doing?"

Alistair's eyes narrowed. "I don't know."

Suddenly, the ground beneath them trembled. Raiden stumbled back, eyes wide with fear. "Alistair!"

Before Alistair could react, the earth split open, and a gust of icy wind erupted from the ground, knocking them both back.

The figure stood still, its hand still raised. "She waits in the shadows."

Alistair scrambled to his feet, his heart pounding. "What is this?"

The figure took a step closer, its voice barely a whisper. "Find her... before it's too late."

With those words, the figure vanished into the darkness, leaving Alistair and Raiden alone in the clearing.

Raiden coughed, struggling to stand. "What... what was that?"

Alistair's fists clenched. "I don't know. But I'm going to find out."

Raiden looked at him, fear in his eyes. "This is getting worse by the minute."

Alistair's eyes burned with determination. "I don't care. I'm going to find her. No matter what."

Just then, a howl echoed through the trees, louder and closer than before.

Raiden's face went pale. "That's Grayson's pack."

Alistair's heart pounded as the howls grew closer. "They've found us."
