Stepping down from the bus, I grabbed my bag and hurriedly made my way to the skyscraper no one in New York could miss.
Once inside the building, I quickly stooped to fix my loosening shoe laces, next was my tie which hung loosely from my neck. And that was when I saw the elevator door closing.
"Wait! Wait!" I yelled at the top of my lungs as I raced to the door.
"Phew!" I sighed in relief once I got in. Hurriedly, I knotted my tie.
It was only when I was done that I raised my gaze and threw it about the elevator.
Tilting my head, I eyed the man that stood at my left.
Hands at his side, he stared plain faced ahead.
I trailed my eyes up and down the impressive lenght of the man's body and didn't know when I blew a whistle.
Darn! This man's tall!
The sound of my whistle must have attracted his attention, cause he turned to look at me.
That was when I froze.
Raven black hair, lightest of grey eyes, a firmly set jawline, lips that performed wonders. All of these, I slowly took in and let my mouth hang open in disbelief.
Was this really him? What on earth was he doing here?
"You! What on earth are you..." I stopped and ran my eyes over him again, he was obviously dressed for work.
That's right he worked here.
Still staring at him, I tucked a stray strand of hair behind my ear. And for a moment, I wondered what my best friend would do if she were in the situation I found myself in right now.
You know, being in the office elevator with the man you got wasted with last night.
I darted my eyes away from his face to the ground, wondering if I should say hi.
Of course you should say hi, I thought to myself.
We met around seven in the evening, went to a bar together, drank, talked, I even brought him home and we had amazing sex all night.
I nodded to myself. When I brought my eyes back to his face, he had this weird stare.
"Hi," I managed to say but he just stared back.
"It's me Shelly, we met yesterday in the evening, remember? I didn't know you worked here."
A slow smile crept at the corners of his lips and instead of replying he just turned his face away.
Was he shy?
"Heh it's okay, we may have had fun last night but we're in the office now. Don't worry I understand, we've got to be professional. You know, separating work life from our personal lives. I can be quite professional you know?" I added.
Not adding to anything I said, he just stood there.
I knew I should stop talking right now cause it was getting embarassing but I just couldn't.
"So umm..." I cleared my throat. "I know we should be professional but then we're the only ones in here so maybe we could do a little chitchat?"
The door to the elevator swung open and he walked out.
"Heh!" I called out after him.
"Walking fast to match his pace, I spoke from behind him."
"Heh! Don't you think that's a little rude; walking out on me! You know umm, I was going to tell you that you were amazing."
Seeing he wasn't responding, I changed the conversation.
"Ok, fine let's not umm, let's not talk about last night since we're in the work place."
He just kept walking.
"Which floor's your office? Umm, hello?"
I called out but he kept walking, totally ignoring me.
Infuriated, I stopped in my tracks.
This man ignoring me was the same man who had turned me to various positions on my bed last. This same man was the reason the lace panties my bestie had gifted me were torn into shreds.
Balling my fist, I tried to suppress the rage that was slowly building up in me.
So he's a horny beast at night that fucks random women he picks from clubs but a decent office man by day?
Picking up my speed, I rushed towards him and grabbed his hand.
"Heh! I said I'm Shelly, the woman you fucked like mad last night."
The man then spoke, "I never did such thing."
This infuriated me.
"Heh! That isn't nice. Okay fine, let's say I wasn't the only woman you toyed around with yesterday but if there's anyone you shouldn't forget, it's me. We drank and talked all evening, then we had a long passionate night together.",
I searched his face for any signs of remembrance but he maintained the annoying straight face.
"You don't remember Liam, were you drunk?" I asked and watched him tilt his head in annoyance.
"Miss, I suggest you leave me alone and hurry on to work." He stated and turned to go, freeing himself from my grip.
"Miss?" I repeated the word in disbelief.
Fury filled me but then his words rung in my ears. Nothing else was able to calm me down right then than the fact that I was late.
"Shit!" I muttered beneath my breath before shouting out. "Jerk!"
Then I spun around and observed my surroundings.
Where was I?
"Excuse me," I stopped a young lady passing by. "Which floor is this please?"
"48th," she replied.
"Shoot!" I muttered and rushed to the elevator.
Once in, I pressed the button to the floor below, the 47th.
I slapped myself.
Darn it! What on earth was I thinking? It was already horrible that I didn't wake early and now I'm late for work, but did I really have to waste all those precious minutes on that jerk?
I sighed and stepped out of the elevator. Locating the office where I was asked to come to, took me some time, in the end I returned to the 48th floor.
Chest heaving, I looked about, wondering why the room was empty.
"Excuse me," I stopped a lady passing by with a box.
"Yes?"
"This room- shouldn't it - I mean, I thought..."
"Where you just recruited?" She cut in.
"Um, yeah."
"You're asking about the official introduction, right?"
"Yeah right!"
"It's over."
"What! Already?"
"The introduction was set by 8, what's the time now?"
"Ummm," I stared down at my watch, my eyes widened.
I stared up at her ccompletely shocked."It's 9:45! H-how did the time fly so fast?"
"You expect me to answer that question?"
"No I..." I stopped short not knowing what else to say.
"What office?"
"Me? I got hired as a secretary."
"Who's secretary?" She asked and my heart did a double flip.
When I had first read that email, I had been so excited but right now, I felt like dying.
In a low voice, I let the words out.
"The CEO."
"The what?"
"The CEO," I repeated and stared up into her shocked face.
"Wait a sec, you got hired as Mr. King's secretary and PA and you're late for work!"
"No I - wait, who's Mr. King?"
"He's the CEO! For goodness sake, you don't even know the name of your boss!"
"No I..." I stopped short, feeling completely stupid. Then my eyes went to the box in her hands.
"What's in there?" I asked curious.
"Luciana's things."
"Who's that?"
"The woman Mr. King fired this morning. I'm helping her with some of her stuff."
I gulped. "W-wh-why did he fire her?"
"She came late."
My knees suddenly got weak and they wobbled beneath me.
"She came late," I repeated absent mindedly and reached down to dry my sweaty palms on my skirt as I watched her walk away.
I'm so doomed.
Clutching my bag, I stood at the door, hesitant to go in.
"Shit!" I cursed, I'm so doomed. Who knew what this Mr. King looked like, was he gonna fire me on the spot?
Just when I was about to go in, the door swung open.
It hit my temple, sending me reeling backwards and landing on my butt to the ground.
Wincing and rubbing my temple in pain, I looked up to the figure that towered above me.
If my frustration was 50 percent before, right now it's at 80, obviously fueled by anger.
Of all people in the world, it had to be this jerk!
I watched him stare down at me, not making a move to give me a hand and I couldn't help but get infuriated.
"Hey!" I yelled up at him. "Can't you see you hit me?" I asked and watched him slowly descend.
Huh? Maybe he wasn't that bad. Was he gonna help me?
Carefully he picked up the papers around me, that had fallen from his hands. I hadn't even noticed.
After picking them up, he slowly began to rise. Bewildered, I stretched forth my hand.
"What are you doing? Help me up!"
He looked at my hands for a brief moment, then rose and walked away.
What? I scoffed and staggered to my feet, dusting myself as I rose.
I turned to face the door and the anxiety that had been overwhelming me returned.
I stepped forward, ready to go in when a chubby woman burst out through the door.
Files in hand, her eyes were all red and teary.
"Hey you okay?" I asked but she just brushed past me.
I gulped. Everyone that left this office seemed to be a mess, I don't think I would like to go in either.
I turned to go then stopped. I was being a coward right now. What will my mother say if she saw me.
I heaved, turned back and walked in, of course the secretary post was empty. I moved on and made to enter the main office when I heard footsteps behind me.
It was the teary faced lady.
She went to the little desk and rummaged through a pile of papers. Just when I was about asking her a question, someone else stepped in.
I turned to see, it was the jerk again.
"Have you found it?"
"No sir." She replied her voice trembling.
Sir? It seems the jerk's her senior. I scratched my head wondering what office and position he held.
"What do you mean you can't find it?" He thundered and I flinched.
"The papers you were given this morning have you shredded them already?"
Numbly she nodded.
"What?"
"Y-ye-yes!" She stammered. "Sir - I - I think, when I went to s-sh-shred the papers I..." She broke off unable to finish her sentence.
"You what? Shredded it as well? Miss Clark there were eight good copies of it don't tell me you've misplaced them."
From where I stood, I watched as the woman wrung her hands in misery. Then I froze, the hairs on my neck were standing, that cold gaze was hovering over me right now.
"Why are you here?"
"Well I, um..."
"Get out!" He ordered cutting me short.
"Excuse me, You can't tell me to leave, I came to see the..." I stopped when I noticed the woman flashing signals my way.
Without hesitating, I turned my back and left.
I was already on my way to the elevator, when my phone buzzed.
I picked it and listened as the woman on the other side rambled on in a tensed voice asking where I was and demanding that I come immediately.
She hung up and I wondered where I had heard that voice before.
Retracting my steps I rushed back to the CEO's office.
The chubby woman stared at me looking a bit shocked on seeing me.
"You're miss Mchan? She asked."
And I gasped, "yes."
"Why didn't you say that earlier?" Why are you late? Hurry on go meet him. You're the reason he's totally upset this morning. Hurry on!" She said as she reached for the intercom.
"She's here!" She spoke into it then turned to me. "Hurry on!"
I nodded and walked in confidently but deep down, I felt that I was going to wet my panties.
"Ms Mchan, what took you so long?" I heard him ask, his voice stern like anything else.
I froze, that voice, how?
"Yes I'm here," I replied and watched him raise his face.
The jerk from last night? I felt like scoffing right now. What was this? A TV show? An opera?
"What are you doing here?"
"I was called and asked to come."
"You're the Mchan?" He asked in disbelief as he ran his eyes over me.
"Yes I am."
"Miss Mchan why are you late? What time is it now?"
I glanced at my watch. "A minute to ten," I said and quickly added, "I can explain the reason I'm late."
Ignoring me, he reached down and retrieved a file, my file.
"Mchan Shelly," he pronounced as he read from my file. Looking up he stared at me briefly then closed my file.
"You can forget about bothering yourself, the door's that way." He said and gestured to the door.
I blinked repeatedly trying to process what was happening.
"Wait, did you just fire me?"
"There are a lot of people striving for this position, Miss Mchan, why shouldn't I give them a chance."
My heart did a double flip in my chest. I was getting fired. No! This can't be happening. What will I tell my mum? How will I explain to her that I lost a spot a lot of people are envying; the CEO's secretary for goodness sake!
"Wait! Wait!" I started, "you can't fire me yet, you haven't even heard the reason I'm late."
"If I remember correctly, you told me earlier this morning." He said and I mentally slapped myself. Darn my mouth.
"But I - that wasn't why I came late."
Silence.
"I - fine! I came late. I sincerely apologize and ask for a second chance, please."
"There's no second chance miss Mchan. You act like nothing you wrote down in your CV."
"What? Everything I wrote down there is true. I would never fake anything."
He tossed my file to the ground. "Take it and get out."
I rushed to snatch it up. "Sir..."
"And tell whoever helped you get this job to stay clear off my path."
"Whoever helped me?" I repeated. "I got this job cause I earned it with my qualifications."
"By qualifications, do you mean, coming late to work, lack of manners and being a whore?"
"What?"
"Miss Mchan, do you really think I would hire a woman who can't separate her work life from her personal life? I need a secretary not a horny whore." He added and I totally lost it.
Marching to his desk I slammed my file on it.
"Speaking of seperating work and personal life, I think you should do that. Horny whore? How did that even come in?"
"Are you challenging me?" He asked, his gaze on me and I stared back not afraid this time.
First he denied me, then he fired me now he was insulting my person.
"Is this what you do with all the women you sleep with?"
"Miss Mchan I won't repeat myself again, I wasn't the man you had your sexual escaped with last night."
"You're shameless!" I thundered. "You aren't even man enough to confront the woman you screwed last night."
"Who said I did?"
"You did Liam!"
He paused for a moment before he spoke. "Are you blind? My name is boldly written on my desk."
I paused. The expression on his face said he was serious. Could it be that I've actually been talking to the wrong person all along.
I took a few steps backwards and read the inscription.
I blinked, stared at it then at him then back at it then again at him.
What on earth was I seeing.
I gulped as I stared at the bold inscription on his desk.
"Lewis King?" I read out loud in disbelief.
No! This wasn't possible. I know who I slept with last night. All right then in this case there was only one explanation.
I raised my gaze to meet his. "You lied to me then. You lied your name is Liam."
He gave me that annoying stare before stating. "Miss Mchan, I won't repeat myself again, I didn't sleep with you last night. That's my name on the inscription and Liam is my twinn."
I stopped for a moment then scoffed. "Geeze! I almost believed you. You're so good at lying you know? Why sleep with me if you were gonna deny me anyway."
"For the last time Miss Mchan, It wasn't me last night. I don't sleep with whores!"
Now I was mad.
"Say it again!"
"I don't sleep with whores now get out from my office Miss Mchan before I call for security."
I stood there, totally unfazed by his threat, I was fired already anyway.
"I'll go but first I need to check something." I said then marched around over to his desk.
I gripped his collar and tugged at his buttons.
"What are you doing?"
"Checking for evidence!"
Aha! I eyed his neck.
"Look, I may have been drunk last night but I clearly remember that there's a little mole on your neck."
Obviously furious, he tore my hands away from his chest.
"I'm calling security." He said and started to turn but I grabbed his shoulder and spun him around.
He opened his mouth to protest but I was faster, possessively, I claimed his mouth with mine.
For some seconds, he froze. For those few seconds I explored the mouth that ate me up last night. I traced my tongue around the seam of his lips, nibbling, sucking, I opened my mouth to go deeper but then his hand shoved me away.
Furiously, he cleaned his lips with the sleeve of his shirt.
"You're a mad woman!" He spat.
I licked my lips as I checked for differences. I really couldn't find any maybe cause he was shocked and wasn't responding.
"I didn't get it, let me try again!"
"If you come near me Miss Mchan, I swear you'll sleep behind bars tonight. Get out!"
"Fine, I will but before I go I just want to tell you that I'm not anything of what you said. I'm not a whore, I didn't fake my CV and lastly, no one helped me get this job! I don't even know anyone who works here."
He opened his mouth to say something when a knock sounded.
"Come in!" He said then hastily rearranged his tie and collar.
I took a seat on the couch, pretending everything was okay.
"Mr. King, here's the file you asked for."
That voice, it was only one person in this entire world I knew possessed such a hard commanding voice.
I snapped my head and gasped when I saw my Mum.
Drawn by the noise, she turned to face me.
"Shelly," she called my name calmly, like she knew we were always meant to meet in this office.
"You know her?" I heard him ask.
"Yes, she's my daughter." My mother replied confidently.
"Interesting, Miss Mchan, didn't you say you didn't know anyone working in this company?"
"I said apart from my mum," I quickly chipped in and gave an awkward smile. "So much questions and answers in this meeting."
"I didn't know you were having a meeting, I'll leave you two to it. I take my leave Mr. King." My mother said then made her way out of the office.
"Interesting," I heard him say. "Mrs Mchan Miriana is your mother, one of our senior directors, yet you said no one helped you get this job."
I ignored him. "What can I do for you Liam?"
"Nothing. Get out of my office, you're fired! And never call me that name again."
Head held up high, I got up from the couch and made my way to the door.
Once out, I sighted the Chubby woman who smiled wildly at me.
"Congratulations!" She said excitedly
A wry smile formed at the corners of my lips. My confidence obviously deceived her.
I returned the wide smile to her. Still smiling, I watched her walk over to me.
"Here," she said and placed a huge bunch of keys in my palm.
"Here are the keys to everything, the drawers, doors and the office car keys is in one of the drawers."
My smile faded.
"Wait! What?"
She went on, "in that drawer over there, I kept a journal that contains some instructions, tips, advice and ways to go about things here."
"Wait! Wait! Why are you giving these to me?"
Ignoring me, she raced over to her bag and snatched it from the seat then she raced back to me.
"It's so horrible working for that man, he's as cold as ice. I'm so glad I get to return to the IT unit." She smiled again, widely, she always smiles widely.
"You're so lucky."
"I'm so lucky?"
She nodded. "I wish I have a mother or family who works as a director here."
"Wait, that - it - it isn't what you..."
"Byeee!" She said then raced to the door.
"And oh! One more thing, avoid his twinn, you don't wanna be involved with that womanizer trust me."
"Wait! What? H-he really has a twinn?" I asked but the over excited Miss Clark didn't hear me.
"Byeee!" She said then slipped through the door.
Seconds passed, then a minute or two. I just stood there like a total idiot.
Sighing I looked at the bunch of keys. Miss Clark had got it all wrong. I've been fired and who on earth told her who my mother is?
Oh no! Don't tell me my mum went blabbering to her that I'm her daughter and I got hired as the CEO's secretary.
Well, I've been fired and that's it.
I went to the desk and dropped the keys, turning around when I heard the door open.
"Miss Mchan," a man dressed in a white T-shirt to match his black pants called as he walked in.
"You must be Shelly?"
Wondering how he knew my name, I numbly nodded.
"Good," he said then placed a pile of files on my desk. "Mr. King needs to sign on these, see to it that you forward these to him this week. It's for the marketing department."
I opened my mouth to say something but he turned his back and hastily left.
What on earth was this, how did he know my name? Who told him I was the secretary? No one in this company knows I'm the newly hired secretary, so how?
Could it be my mum? I shuddered what if she went around telling people that I'm her daughter and I got hired as the CEO's secretary.
No! No! This shouldn't be happening. No one should know I was hired cause in that way, they weren't going to find out that I was fired.
I grabbed my bag. Mr. King fired me already, I should leave now.
I turned to go when my phone buzzed. I retrieved it from my bag and read the caller ID.
It was my mum, so I hit the answer button quickly.
I stood there and listened to her speak from the other end of the line.
Listening to her speak, I felt like dying. Quickly I grabbed my handkerchief and wiped my sweat.
What on earth had I gotten myself into?
