Walking slowly, but trying not to fall. His hands sunk in the pockets of his white knitted jacket; clumsy steps. He entered a clean and elegant doorway and slowly climbed the marble steps until he reached a mahogany door. He inserted the key in the lock and the door slowly gave way.
"My love, I have dinner ready," the woman commented as she hopped over to her beloved husband; she looked around complacently. Then she added next: " I have prepared something you will like.
He himself, unlike on previous occasions, did not flinch at her presence. Instead, he just stared at the computer, not paying any attention to her. She raised a confused eyebrow; waiting for a reaction from her husband. Which there was none.
"Are you listening, love?" he insisted again. Her pulse quickened, she could see his restless shadow out of the corner of her eye. There were few occasions when she found herself with such nerves.
This time, the man lifted his chin so he could hear her; she smiled. Hastily, she sat down in the available chair in front of the desk.
"Yes, tell me," she murmured, trying not to pay too much attention to him.
"I wanted to tell you that I love you," she said out of the blue. Eduardo nodded.
"It's all right."
"Is something wrong with you?" He asked suddenly, "You always say "ditto" to me.
"I want to talk to you, Brianna."
Brianna's smile. It faded.
"I have something to tell you, too," she commented with a beaming smile, regaining her composure.
"First, listen to me...."
Brianna let her body fall back, not understanding what he wanted to tell her.
"Love! Okay, I'm listening."
"I... I don't want to be with you."
"What?" She asked, thinking she had misheard him.
"That's why; you don't listen to me and besides: I'm bored with you."
As she said those words, Briana's eyes popped out of their sockets. She could not understand what was happening to her husband?
"Why do you say that, I can't understand."
"Simple," she said, lowering her eyes. "You are... one of the people I love the least in my life...."
"What? I don't understand what you mean."
"As I told you before... And apparently you don't listen, I'm bored with you," he spoke in a deep voice, "I'm not interested in being with a spoiled girl like you. It's been three years of our marriage, now I want you out of my life. So I'm going to ask you a favor, as soon as you walk out of that door go and collect all your belongings. Besides, you're rich, you don't need me," she said that, and turned around to continue working.
I thought, "Surely this is a joke..."
Briana's eyes opened wide, she swallowed saliva dryly, lowering her eyes and feeling at that instant very lost for the first time in her life.
"Please, I don't understand what you're trying to tell me."
"I don't want a marriage with you anymore, I want to separate, and never see you again," she repeated.
"Are you... Are you joking with me, love? I'm sure it's a joke. We are fine,"
we have never argued and we have always...
"I don't love you anymore. In fact, that feeling never came to me. It was always a lie, and the truth is that I want to be single again. I'm bored, you weren't even good in the ca...
"Shut up, you're lying! "She interrupted him, "Tell me the real reason why you're leaving me," he said with tears in his eyes, getting up from his seat.
"I don't love you anymore, I never loved you. So please go away. Do you want to keep asking me why I left you, I can list the reasons, but not for now. It bores me to be with you. Soon my assistant will come in, who will entertain me."
"You're so cynical, are you really telling me that you're sleeping with your assistant?"
"No, dear, not yet. But what I want to do once I walk out of this door. She's really going to entertain me from you."
Saying those words, Brianna finally stood up. She turned around, her back to her soon"to"be ex"husband.
"What did you want to tell me?" He repeated, his wife slammed on the brakes.
"Nothing "love," she said, emphasizing the word love, and he simply let her go with a laugh, breaking Briana's heart a little more.
As soon as she left for the office, her heart beat in a hurry, unable to understand why her husband had left her out of the blue.
Worst of all, the news she couldn't tell him. She drops her body in the doorway, the floor shifts beneath her feet. She closes her eyes, not knowing what to do.
Two years later, Briana is at work. Suddenly, she enters her small cubicle, suggestive.
"Did you finish what I asked you to do? You're so slow, Briana. I have every desire to throw you out, but there you are," she said and rolled her eyes, leaning her body against the durlock wall," so please hurry to the office, the new boss is there.
"New boss? "he asked in a quiet voice."
"Less questions and get a move on. You don't want to keep him waiting; you've been here barely a month."
"Sure, boss."
She nodded, and started walking in her high heels, the only ones she had. Her steps were too short to make it to the office. As soon as she crossed the big wooden door, sepulchral silence invaded everything. There was a man with his back turned, sitting in a swivel chair.
Briana smoothed her skirt with her hands and bit her lips.
"Hello..." she murmured in an uneasy voice, breathing nervously.
"Hello... So here you are," said a familiar voice.
It had been two years since she had heard it again, and her whole body shuddered.
She crossed her arms, trying to protect herself.
"Hello," she commented, trying not to cry.
She hated him with all her heart, he had ruined her whole life.
"You are my new assistant, here I have all the numbers you have to schedule, besides, you have to help me with the paperwork and also with the records. Here, it seemed that anything but running the company was being done," he said quickly, and then added, "I only have one requirement.
"One requirement?" he asked doubtfully. "Every time you go out you put the lock on the door, and you must always knock before entering. Well now go away, I have to continue working.
"Uhm, excuse me," she said and walked away.
As he did so, he leaned against the door; his heart beat in a hurry. He hadn't expected to see them, especially not after two years.
As soon as she reached the cubicle, her friend Melisa looked at her funny.
"It seems you saw a ghost... What happened to you?"
"I saw it..." she mumbled with her eyes lost.
Her friend did not understand and moved her arm in an accelerated way in front of her.
"A ghost? What...?"
"No! It was Eduardo!"
"Ah Eduardo!" she exclaimed, although she immediately wrinkled her eyebrows, "Eduardo who?"
"My ex"husband," he said.
"You're joking, aren't you?"
"No, I told you he was very rich but I can't believe he bought... this company."
"What if he did it on purpose?" he asked.
"I doubt it, he left me because he said I had bored him. He didn't love me anymore."
" Then, is he really that much of a son of a...?"
"Melissa, if they hear you, they'll throw us both out!"
"Yes, you're right. "Yes, you're right. Well, what are you going to do now?
"Well, I have to keep working, I have no other choice," she muttered and turned around to continue with her homework.
As soon as he opened the list, he shuddered. Lots of women's names, he found. There were several who were super models, that did nothing but make her sad.
She didn't want to feel that way. When she finished, she stood up so she could ask the gentleman if he needed anything else. She had spent three hours working, going through everything on her computer and phone. As soon as she entered the large office, she could see that outside, there was a desk.
"I set up the desk so you can work here, did you finish what I ordered? "he asked without looking at her.
"Yes sir, here is the notebook again."
"All right, I want you to arrange a meeting with one of the models, I need it for tonight."
"Of course, sir," he commented.
"Surely with some of those... models with perfect waists," he thought painfully, "I'm not interested anyway, I only feel contempt for him!"."
"You may go, I don't need you for anything else."
"D"Do you really give me the rest of the afternoon off?" he asked hopefully.
"Yes, don't you listen?"
She nodded happily, and simply disappeared down the corridors, but not before locking the door. He looked even more handsome than before, his beard was growing, shading his face, and his blue eyes were as big and expressionless as ever. He was wearing an impeccable blue suit, matching his eyes.
She shivered, it made her feel so many things.
<
Things, she had been holding back for a long time.
The divorced lady, walked the streets in a hurry.
First she changed from big heels to sneakers. She had a long way to go, she had no money to pay for a bus, let alone a cab. She needed every penny to make ends meet.
After half an hour of non"stop walking, she arrived at an old building, where even the staircase had some holes in it.
A red door greeted her. A big number 32, it was right in line with her head. She took the keys and opened it.
The first thing she found was her mother. She was smiling with a small baby in her arms.
"Mom..."
"Hi honey, I was here with Emma."
"Hi baby," she said in a sweet voice, and hugged her daughter.
"Honey... How I wish I could help you more," her mother said sadly.
"You do too much, mom. It's just the two of us here, and at some point we'll be able to get by, I've already prepared dinner."
"Really? it's rare that we can have dinner," Briana said confused.
"I know, but I found some money stashed in one of my pockets, so I was able to make it."
"Thank you mom... I wish I could always bring you the food I get at work."
"Don't worry, honey... You know we'll get by eventually."
Brianna nodded, as her mother walked away. Even though they lived in a one"bedroom, Briana felt good about every little accomplishment.
She plopped her body down on the twin mattress the apartment had.
There wasn't much stuff, after being left on the street, her father had taken everything, leaving her and her mother alone on the street. Everyone had abandoned her.
She could not tell Eduardo that she was pregnant. Her secret, led her to keep going, looking for jobs as a waitress, all kinds of jobs until she finally found that company.
Her mother had offered to take care of her daughter. While she worked. The arrangement, had lasted two years, while the two were looking for a way to get everything back.
The scoundrel of her father: all the properties and money had been hidden in someone else's name. Besides, they had no money to hire a good lawyer.
Only what the state would give them. Briana put her baby girl to sleep on the improvised bed. She tucked her in, after giving her a kiss on the cheek, and stood up to help her mother. The next day, she was already standing in front of her boss. He, as always, did not even look at her face, but simply ordered her what to do.
"Good morning, sir" she said.
"Good morning, here are these forms, I want you to fill them out, and tell me how the company's numbers are."
"Of course, sir. But I am just a secretary."
"You're a business administrator, I'm surprised that you're... forget it."
"Right away, sir."
He turned around and started walking.
"Wait... "Suddenly her husband's thick voice said.
As she turned around she looked at him curiously.
"What's the matter?"
"How have you been?" He asked suddenly, and Briana's heart skipped a beat.
"Is he worried about me?" she thought, "Never!".
"Very well, and you?"
"Wonderful"
They both stared at each other. Briana had her body on her side, feeling as if her heart would jump out of her chest. He, on the other hand, was simply expressionless, with both hands resting on the desk.
"You're too slow. Go to work!" he scolded her.
"Right away, sir," she said crestfallen, and walked out the door.
As soon as she was in the hallway, she dropped her back against the cold wood.
Slowly she slid to the floor.
