Chapter 1 Anniversary Betrayal

The candles were still burning when Isabella heard the moan.

Low.

Breathy.

Female.

She froze in the hallway of their penthouse apartment, the anniversary cake trembling slightly in her hands.

Three years of marriage.

Three hours of preparation.

Three seconds before her world shattered.

At first, she told herself she was mistaken.

Maybe the TV was on.

Maybe Daniel was on a call.

Maybe-

Another moan. Louder this time.

Followed by his voice.

Soft. Intimate. The voice he hadn't used on her in months.

"Don't worry," Daniel murmured. "She won't be back until late."

The cake slipped from her fingers.

It hit the marble floor with a sickening splat.

Silence followed.

Then, there were hurried whispers from the bedroom.

Isabella didn't remember walking down the hallway.

Didn't remember pushing open the half-closed door.

But she would remember what she saw for the rest of her life.

Daniel.

Her husband.

In their bed.

With another woman beneath him.

The silk anniversary sheets she bought last week tangled around their naked bodies.

For a second, no one spoke.

Daniel's eyes met hers.

Not guilty.

Not ashamed.

Just... annoyed.

The woman gasped and pulled the sheet to her chest.

"Oh my God-" she whispered.

Isabella's voice came out eerily calm.

"Am I interrupting?"

Daniel exhaled slowly, as if she had walked in during a business meeting.

"You weren't supposed to be home yet."

That hurt more than the betrayal.

She swallowed.

"I came home early. It's our anniversary."

Silence.

The other woman stiffened.

Daniel rolled off the bed with zero urgency, reaching for his pants.

"You should've called first."

Isabella stared at him.

"I should have called? Before coming into my own home?"

Daniel finally looked at her fully.

And whatever she saw in his eyes killed something inside her.

"I didn't want to do this tonight," he said flatly. "But maybe it's better this way."

Her fingers curled.

"Do what?"

He finished buttoning his shirt before answering.

"I want a divorce."

The word echoed in the room.

Divorce.

Three years of loving him.

Supporting him when his startup nearly collapsed.

Enduring his mother's constant insults.

She gave up her own career to help build his company.

And now-

A divorce?

"For her?" Isabella asked quietly.

The woman shifted uncomfortably.

Daniel didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

The honesty was brutal.

"You're joking," Isabella whispered.

"I'm not."

She felt the floor tilt slightly beneath her heels.

"What about us?"

"There is no 'us,' Isabella." His voice turned cold. "You were convenient. Supportive. Safe. But I've outgrown this."

Outgrown.

Like she was an old coat he no longer needed.

Her throat burned.

"You promised forever."

He laughed softly.

"You were naive enough to believe that."

The other woman slid out of bed, wrapping herself in Isabella's robe.

"I think I should go-"

"No," Daniel said. "Stay."

Isabella's nails dug into her palms.

"Daniel, how long?"

He didn't even try to lie.

"Six months."

Six months.

Half a year.

While she was planning anniversary surprises.

While she was defending him to everyone.

While she was loving him.

Her voice trembled now.

"Why?"

The woman spoke instead.

"Because I'm pregnant."

The world went silent.

Isabella blinked.

"What?"

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"She's carrying my child."

Her ears rang.

"That's not possible."

"It is."

She stared at him.

"And if she wasn't pregnant?"

He didn't hesitate.

"I'd still leave."

That was the final blow.

Not the pregnancy.

Not the cheating.

But the certainty.

The complete absence of love.

She laughed suddenly.

Soft.

Broken.

"You know what's funny?" she whispered. "I was going to tell you something tonight, too."

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

She shook her head.

"It doesn't matter anymore."

He grabbed his watch from the nightstand.

"I'll have my lawyer send papers tomorrow."

"You're kicking me out?"

"It's my penthouse."

"You bought it with our money."

"My money," he corrected. "My company."

She stared at him in disbelief.

"You wouldn't have company without me."

"And yet," he said smoothly, "I do."

Something inside her finally cracked.

The tears came-but silently.

She refused to sob in front of them.

Refused to beg.

Instead, she stepped backward toward the door.

"Congratulations," she said softly to the woman. "You've won."

The woman looked uneasy.

Daniel didn't.

As Isabella turned to leave, his voice stopped her.

"Oh, and Isabella?"

She didn't look back.

"Don't make this messy. You'll walk away with more dignity that way."

Dignity.

She almost laughed again.

She walked out of the bedroom.

Out of the hallway.

Out of the penthouse.

She didn't take her purse.

Didn't take her coat.

Didn't take anything except the wedding ring, which she slowly twisted off her finger in the elevator.

The metal felt heavier than it ever had.

By the time she reached the lobby, her phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

We'll discuss settlements tomorrow.

Settlement.

Like she was a contract.

Like she was nothing.

The elevator doors closed behind her.

And Isabella finally let the tears fall.

But as she stepped into the cold night air-

Her hand instinctively moved to her stomach.

Because Daniel wasn't the only one with a secret.

And if what she suspected was true...

He had just thrown away more than a wife.

He had thrown away his child.

Her phone buzzed again.

Unknown number.

She hesitated.

Then answered.

A deep, unfamiliar male voice spoke on the other end.

"Isabella Hart?"

She swallowed.

"Yes."

"This is Alexander Laurent. We need to talk about your husband."

Her breath caught.

"How do you know my husband?"

A pause.

Then-

"I know everything."

And suddenly...

The night didn't feel cold anymore.

It felt dangerous.

End of Chapter 1

Chapter 2 The Wife He Never Loved

"Since everyone's here," Daniel said, lifting his wine glass, "there's something important I need to announce."

The clink of crystal against crystal echoed too loudly in the private dining room.

Isabella's fingers tightened around her fork.

She knew that tone.

Public. Performative.

Calculated.

Across the long mahogany table sat Daniel's parents, two board members from HartTech, and-of course-Sophia.

Sophia wore white.

To a family dinner.

Isabella's wedding ring suddenly felt heavy.

Daniel didn't look at her when he spoke.

"I'll be filing for divorce next week."

The word sliced through the air.

Divorce.

His mother gasped.

One of the board members coughed awkwardly.

Sophia lowered her gaze, pretending shock, but the corner of her lips twitched.

Daniel finally turned toward Isabella.

And smiled.

Cold.

Detached.

"We've grown apart," he continued smoothly. "It's better for both of us."

Better.

As if three years of marriage were a quarterly report.

As if she hadn't built his company's foundation with sleepless nights and unpaid labor.

Isabella forced herself to breathe.

Don't cry.

Not here.

Not in front of them.

Daniel reached for Sophia's hand.

"I've also decided to take responsibility," he added. "Sophia is pregnant."

The room shifted.

Eyes darted toward Isabella.

Pity.

Judgment.

Curiosity.

She felt stripped bare.

Her chest tightened, but her voice, when she found it, was steady.

"Congratulations," she said softly.

Daniel blinked.

He'd expected hysteria.

Maybe a scene.

But Isabella simply placed her napkin beside her plate and stood.

"Is this really how you wanted to do it?" she asked quietly, meeting his gaze.

He shrugged. "I thought honesty in front of family was appropriate."

Honesty.

The hypocrisy burned.

Sophia squeezed his arm possessively.

Isabella saw it clearly now.

The performance.

The replacement.

The narrative already written: devoted husband forced to leave incompatible wife for unborn child.

And she was the villain in their story.

Not tonight.

Not anymore.

She smiled gently.

"Then let's be honest," she said.

Silence fell again.

"You wouldn't have HartTech without me."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You handled early marketing," he snapped. "You weren't the founder."

"I built your investor deck. I negotiated your first angel round. I stayed up rewriting your pitch while you slept."

Gasps.

Daniel's father shifted uncomfortably.

Sophia's nails dug into Daniel's sleeve.

"You're embarrassing yourself," Daniel hissed.

"No," Isabella said calmly. "You already did that for me."

She picked up her clutch.

"I'll sign whatever papers you send."

Then she looked at Sophia.

"Take care of your health."

Sophia's smile faltered.

Isabella turned and walked out.

Head high.

Back straight.

Heart-shattering.

The cold night air hit her face the second she stepped outside the restaurant.

Her legs trembled once she reached the curb.

Three years.

Three years of loyalty.

Of belief.

Of sacrifice.

She remembered the cramped apartment.

The instant noodles.

Selling her mother's bracelet to fund Daniel's first prototype.

"I believe in you," she had whispered to him back then.

He had held her hands and promised, "When I succeed, you'll never regret standing beside me."

She almost laughed now.

Success hadn't changed him.

It had revealed him.

Her phone buzzed.

Lily.

She hesitated, then answered.

"You saw?" Isabella asked.

"It's everywhere," Lily snapped. "Someone posted photos already. 'HartTech CEO Announces Divorce for Pregnant Mistress.' He didn't even wait."

Public humiliation.

Strategic.

Daniel always understood optics.

Isabella swallowed.

"I'm fine."

"You're not fine," Lily shot back. "Come home. Please."

Home.

That word no longer meant Daniel.

It meant her sister's tiny apartment was filled with warmth and brutal honesty.

"I will," Isabella said.

She ended the call and placed her hand over her stomach.

A strange flutter twisted inside her.

Nausea.

Stress, probably.

She hadn't eaten.

She hadn't slept.

She hadn't processed anything.

Her mind replayed Daniel's words.

Better for both of us.

Sophia is pregnant.

Isabella closed her eyes.

Why did that sentence feel... wrong?

Something about Sophia's expression.

Too controlled.

Too careful.

As if she were acting.

Her phone buzzed again.

This time, an unknown number.

She ignored it.

It buzzed again.

Then a message appeared.

Unknown: Are you going to let him take everything from you again?

Her pulse spiked.

Again?

Who was this?

Another message.

Unknown: You deserve more than scraps, Isabella.

Her breath caught.

How does this person know me?

Before she could reply, headlights flashed in front of her.

A sleek black Rolls-Royce stopped at the curb.

The rear window rolled down slowly.

Sharp jawline.

Dark eyes.

Composed expression.

Alexander Laurent.

CEO of Laurent Global Holdings.

One of the most powerful men in the city.

She recognized him instantly from business magazines.

Why was he here?

His gaze met hers.

Steady.

Assessing.

"Get in," he said calmly.

Her heart skipped.

"Excuse me?"

"You don't want paparazzi capturing you crying on the sidewalk," he replied.

"I'm not crying."

"Not yet."

His tone wasn't mocking.

It was factual.

Cold.

Controlled.

Infuriating.

She should refuse.

She should walk away.

But flashes of cameras were already gathering across the street.

Daniel's narrative was spreading fast.

She straightened.

"I don't take rides from strangers."

"You're not a stranger to me."

The words hit differently.

Before she could ask what that meant, Marcus-Alexander's security chief-stepped out and opened the door.

"Ms. Hart," Marcus said gently, "please."

Alexander's eyes never left hers.

Power radiated from him.

Not loud.

Not showy.

Just absolute certainty.

And for reasons she couldn't explain, she felt... safe.

She got in.

The car moved smoothly through the city.

Silence filled the backseat.

Isabella stared ahead.

"Why are you helping me?" she asked finally.

Alexander adjusted his cufflinks.

"Because you're about to make a mistake."

"I already did," she whispered.

"Not that one."

She turned to him.

"What do you mean?"

He held up his phone.

On the screen was a breaking news headline.

HartTech CEO to Announce New Strategic Partnership Following Divorce.

Her stomach dropped.

Strategic partnership.

"With Laurent Global?" she asked slowly.

Alexander's lips curved faintly.

"No."

"With Kane Industries."

Sophia's brother.

Edward Kane.

Corporate sabotage rumors surrounded that company for years.

"They're positioning Sophia's pregnancy as the bridge between the two families," Alexander said calmly. "A merger wrapped in sentiment."

Cold calculation.

Daniel wasn't just leaving her.

He was replacing her strategically.

She felt foolish.

Used.

Disposable.

"You knew," she said suddenly. "You knew about this dinner."

"Yes."

"Why?"

He studied her face.

"Because three years ago, you turned down a job offer from Laurent Global."

Her breath caught.

"I... don't remember that."

"You interviewed with us. Senior marketing strategist. You declined."

Her mind raced.

That was the week Daniel pitched his startup idea.

She had chosen him instead.

"I remember," she whispered.

Alexander's voice softened-barely.

"You chose loyalty over ambition."

"And look where that got me."

"Exactly."

The car slowed.

They stopped in front of a luxury hotel.

Alexander turned fully toward her.

"I need a wife."

The words stunned her.

"What?"

"My grandfather's will requires marriage and an heir for full controlling shares of Laurent Global."

She blinked.

This couldn't be real.

"You're proposing a contract marriage?"

"Yes."

Her laugh was hollow.

"I just got publicly discarded."

"And you're the perfect candidate."

Her eyes flashed.

"Perfect?"

"You're intelligent. You understand corporate strategy. You know how to play the long game."

His gaze sharpened.

"And Daniel Hart underestimates you."

That hit.

Deep.

Hard.

"I don't want revenge," she said quietly.

"You don't?"

She hesitated.

Images of Daniel's smirk.

Sophia's triumphant grip.

The humiliation.

"I want my dignity back," she admitted.

Alexander nodded once.

"Marry me. You gain protection, resources, and leverage. I gain compliance with my grandfather's clause."

"And love?" she asked bitterly.

"This is business."

Her chest tightened.

She had already married for love.

And look how that ended.

Before she could respond, her stomach twisted violently.

She pressed a hand to her mouth.

Marcus handed her water.

Alexander's gaze flicked to her pale face.

"You're unwell."

"It's stress."

But doubt flickered inside her.

Her cycle was late.

Very late.

She had dismissed it.

Too busy supporting Daniel.

Too distracted by betrayal.

Her heart began to pound.

No.

It couldn't be-

She swallowed hard.

"I need to stop somewhere," she said quietly.

Alexander studied her.

"Where?"

"Pharmacy."

Ten minutes later, Isabella stood in a brightly lit convenience store restroom.

A small white box sat on the sink.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

The instructions blurred.

Breathe.

Just breathe.

She thought of Daniel announcing another woman's pregnancy.

Of being replaced.

Of being called unnecessary.

What if-

No.

She squeezed her eyes shut.

If she were pregnant...

Everything changed.

She completed the test and set it down.

Three minutes.

The longest three minutes of her life.

Her reflection in the mirror looked different.

Not weak.

Not broken.

Just... stunned.

She thought of Alexander's offer.

Protection.

Power.

Leverage.

A child.

Her child.

Not Daniel's legacy.

Hers.

Her phone buzzed again.

Unknown number.

Unknown: He'll regret humiliating you. But only if you're strong enough to make him.

Her pulse thundered.

Who is this?

A knock sounded on the restroom door.

"Ms. Hart?" Marcus's voice. "Are you alright?"

"Just a minute."

Her eyes slowly lowered to the test.

One line.

She exhaled-

Then a second faint line began to appear.

Her breath stopped.

No.

No, no-

It darkened.

Clear.

Unmistakable.

Positive.

Her knees weakened.

Pregnant.

Daniel had announced another woman's child tonight.

But she-

She was carrying his.

Or maybe...

Her mind spun.

What if Sophia wasn't?

What if this was the real heir?

Her heart pounded so violently she thought she might faint.

Outside, her phone rang.

This time, it wasn't unknown.

It was Daniel.

She stared at the screen.

Why is he calling now?

It rang again.

Then a text came through.

Daniel: We need to talk. Now.

Her blood ran cold.

Another message appeared.

Daniel: About the baby.

Her fingers went numb.

How does he know?

She hadn't told anyone.

Not even Lily.

The door handle rattled lightly.

"Isabella?" Marcus called.

Her phone buzzed again.

But this time-

It wasn't Daniel.

It was Sophia.

Sophia: You really thought you were the only one?

The test trembled in her hand.

Two lines.

Two lives.

Two secrets.

And somehow-

They already knew.

The restroom light flickered once.

And Isabella realized-

She was no longer the discarded wife.

She was the key to a war that had already begun.

Short recap:

Daniel publicly humiliates Isabella by announcing their divorce and Sophia's pregnancy. Alexander Laurent offers Isabella a contract marriage for strategic reasons. Isabella discovers she may be pregnant - and receives a chilling message implying others already know.

Chapter 3 Papers and Power

The pen trembled in Isabella's hand.

Not because she was weak.

Because she refused to let it shake.

Daniel leaned back across the polished mahogany table, dressed in a charcoal suit, one ankle resting on his knee. He acted like this was just another board meeting, not the end of their marriage.

"You don't need to drag this out," he said smoothly. "It's just paperwork."

Just paperwork.

Seven years of love.

Three years of sacrifice.

Her career. Her savings. Her youth.

Reduced to ink.

Isabella slowly looked up. Her eyes were calm-almost unnaturally so.

"I'll sign," she said.

Daniel's brows lifted in surprise. He had expected tears. Pleading. Maybe anger.

Not composure.

"But," she continued softly, "I have one condition."

His jaw tightened.

"This isn't a negotiation, Isabella."

"It is," she replied. "Because I know things."

Silence settled heavily between them.

Outside the private conference room in the courthouse, lawyers shuffled papers. Clerks moved briskly. Lives ended and began every minute here.

Daniel's expression sharpened. "What things?"

Isabella's pulse pounded.

She thought of last night.

The nausea.

The late period.

The test she hadn't yet taken but could already feel in her bones.

She might be carrying his child.

And he had humiliated her in front of his entire family while his mistress smirked beside him.

Her stomach twisted.

I will not beg.

"I want five percent equity in HartTech," she said evenly. "Vested immediately."

Daniel laughed.

A sharp, incredulous sound.

"Are you insane? The company's valuation just crossed eight figures."

"I know. I built the original pitch deck. I secured your first angel investor. I ran a marketing strategy for eighteen months without salary."

"You were my wife."

"I was your partner."

His expression hardened.

"Five percent is outrageous."

"It's mercy," she replied.

He leaned forward, eyes flashing. "You signed a prenup."

"I did," she said calmly. "But I also have email archives showing Sophia Kane accessing confidential company projections before her official hiring date."

His face drained of color.

"I know she's been sitting in on investor calls," Isabella continued. "And I know Edward Kane's firm recently shorted HartTech stock through offshore accounts."

Daniel's jaw clenched.

"Are you threatening me?"

"I'm protecting myself."

Silence.

For the first time since last night, she saw it.

Fear.

Not love.

Not regret.

Fear of losing status.

Fear of losing power.

She felt something inside her shift.

A fracture sealing into steel.

"You wouldn't," he said quietly.

"I would," she answered.

And she meant it.

Her heart hurt.

It still did.

She hated that.

She had loved this man when he was sleeping on a futon and eating instant noodles.

She had believed in him when investors laughed.

She had stood beside him when his own parents said he was delusional.

And now?

Now he looked at her like she was an inconvenience.

A liability to be erased.

She swallowed the ache rising in her throat.

I deserve more than survival.

I deserve dignity.

More than anything, she feared being discarded.

Becoming irrelevant.

And beneath that fear

The whisper.

What if I'm pregnant?

Would he fight for custody?

Would Sophia try to destroy her?

Would her child grow up watching its father worship another woman?

Her fingers curled around the pen.

No.

She would not let her future child be built on humiliation.

Daniel finally spoke.

"Three percent."

"Five."

"Four. Final."

She held his gaze.

"Five percent. Public announcement that I contributed to HartTech's founding strategy. And you fund my independent consulting firm for one year."

His eyes narrowed. "You're starting a firm?"

"I never stopped being capable."

He stared at her for a long moment.

Calculating.

Then, coldly:

"Fine."

Her heart slammed.

She hadn't expected him to agree so quickly.

He slid the amended document toward her.

"Sign."

For a split second, she hesitated.

Seven years.

Gone with ink.

Then she signed.

Daniel stood immediately.

No apology.

No softness.

Just business.

"Goodbye, Isabella."

No, I'm sorry.

Not thank you.

Goodbye.

She watched him walk out.

And something inside her finally snapped.

Not into pieces.

Into power.

The courthouse hallway buzzed.

Isabella stepped out of the conference room, divorce papers in hand.

Her phone vibrated.

Lily.

She answered immediately.

"Well?" her sister demanded.

"It's done."

Silence.

Then a soft curse. "Are you okay?"

"I will be."

"Did you tell him?"

Isabella's hand drifted unconsciously to her abdomen.

"No."

"Bella..."

"I need confirmation first."

"And if you are?"

Isabella looked down at the signed documents.

"I won't let him control this."

She hung up before her voice could crack.

As she turned the corner

She collided with someone.

Strong hands caught her before she fell.

"Careful."

The voice was deep.

Controlled.

Dangerously calm.

She looked up

And her breath stalled.

Alexander Laurent.

Everyone in the business world knew that face.

Sharp jawline. Tailored black suit. Silver cufflinks engraved with the Laurent crest.

CEO of Laurent Global Holdings.

Billionaire.

Untouchable.

His dark eyes studied her-not casually.

Intently.

As if he recognized her.

"Ms. Hart," he said.

Her stomach dropped.

"You know me?"

"I make it a point to know capable strategists."

She blinked.

Capable.

No one had called her that in months.

"How do you-"

"You ran HartTech's early marketing campaign," he said smoothly. "Impressive traction for a startup."

Heat crept into her cheeks.

Daniel had taken public credit for that.

Alexander's gaze flicked briefly to the folder in her hand.

"Divorce court is rarely pleasant."

His tone wasn't mocking.

It was observant.

Clinical.

"It's necessary," she replied.

A flicker of something crossed his eyes.

Approval?

"Sometimes endings are strategic," he said. "They make room for acquisitions."

Her pulse quickened.

Was he flirting?

Or negotiating?

Before she could answer, a clerk hurried toward them.

"Mr. Laurent, we need your signature on the inheritance affidavit."

Inheritance?

Alexander's expression cooled instantly.

"To finalize your compliance with your grandfather's will," the clerk added.

Ah.

The rumor.

Victor Laurent's marriage clause.

Alexander must marry and produce an heir to retain controlling shares.

Isabella stepped back.

"I'll let you handle your... acquisitions."

The corner of his mouth lifted slightly.

"Ms. Hart."

"Yes?"

"Don't underestimate your leverage."

Then he walked away.

Her heart thudded harder than it had when signing the divorce.

Why did that feel like a warning?

Or an invitation?

Fifteen minutes later, Isabella stood at the filing desk to submit her finalized documents.

The clerk shuffled papers rapidly.

"Sign here as well, Mrs.-sorry-Ms. Hart."

Isabella didn't correct the slip.

She was tired.

Emotionally wrung dry.

The clerk pushed another document toward her.

"Standard acknowledgment of marital status update."

Isabella barely glanced at it.

Her mind raced with numbers.

Five percent equity.

A new firm.

A possible child.

A new life.

She signed.

The clerk stamped everything briskly.

"Congratulations."

Isabella frowned.

"For what?"

The woman looked confused.

"Your marriage registration."

The world tilted.

"My what?"

The clerk blinked. "Marriage registration to Alexander Laurent. It was filed alongside your divorce dissolution."

Her heart stopped.

"That's impossible."

The clerk scanned the screen.

"Same surname. Hart. We processed the documents together. You signed both."

Ice slid down Isabella's spine.

"No. I signed my divorce papers."

"And your marriage certificate," the clerk insisted gently. "It's legally binding."

Her breath came shallow.

Alexander Laurent.

Marriage.

She hadn't even read the second document.

Footsteps approached behind her.

Slow.

Measured.

She turned.

Alexander stood there.

Watching her.

As if he'd expected this.

"Is there a problem?" he asked calmly.

Her voice trembled despite her effort to steady it.

"Why is there a marriage certificate with your name and mine?"

The clerk cleared her throat. "There was a clerical merge due to identical surname entries and pre-filed contractual paperwork."

Contractual.

Alexander's gaze never left Isabella's face.

"My grandfather values efficiency," he said.

Her pulse roared in her ears.

"You knew?"

His silence was answer enough.

Rage flared.

"Did you orchestrate this?"

He stepped closer.

Not threatening.

But powerful.

"I presented you with an opportunity," he said quietly. "You chose to sign."

"I didn't know what I was signing!"

"You're intelligent. You negotiate aggressively. You read contracts."

His voice softened just slightly.

"Except today."

Humiliation burned her cheeks.

Was she that distracted?

That vulnerable?

"You manipulated this," she accused.

"Perhaps," he said evenly. "Or perhaps fate enjoys irony."

Her divorce had been finalized minutes ago.

And now-

She was legally married.

To a billionaire she barely knew.

Across the lobby, Daniel re-entered with Sophia on his arm.

He stopped dead.

"What the hell is this?" Daniel demanded, eyes flicking between Isabella and Alexander.

Sophia's manicured hand tightened possessively on Daniel's sleeve.

Alexander didn't look at them.

He only looked at Isabella.

"Shall we inform your ex-husband," he murmured, "that you've upgraded?"

Daniel's face turned crimson.

"You planned this," he snarled at Isabella.

She almost laughed.

The audacity.

"You think I'd marry someone for revenge?"

Alexander's gaze darkened slightly.

"Would that be so terrible?"

The air crackled.

Daniel stepped forward.

"You're not seriously marrying her."

Alexander finally turned to him.

Cold.

Measured.

"She's my wife."

The words echoed.

Possessive.

Final.

Sophia's eyes flashed with jealousy.

"Daniel, this is insane," she hissed. "She's just trying to embarrass you."

Embarrass.

After last night?

Isabella felt something shift again.

A spark.

Revenge was dangerous.

But power?

Power was intoxicating.

She lifted her chin.

"I don't need to try."

Daniel stared at her as if seeing her for the first time.

Not broken.

Not begging.

Untouchable.

"You'll regret this," he warned.

Alexander's voice cut like glass.

"She won't."

Daniel stormed out with Sophia in tow.

The courthouse doors slammed.

Silence lingered.

Isabella turned slowly to Alexander.

"This isn't real," she said.

"It's legally valid."

"You used me."

"I offered you protection."

"From what?"

His eyes dropped-just briefly-to her abdomen.

Her heart nearly stopped.

"You shouldn't walk into war unarmed," he said quietly.

Ice flooded her veins.

"How do you know about-"

"I know more than you think."

Her breath came fast.

"What do you want from me?"

He studied her for a long moment.

Then

"An heir."

The word hit like a detonation.

Her hand flew instinctively to her stomach.

He stepped closer.

"If you're carrying Daniel Hart's child," he said calmly, "the Laurent name can still protect it."

Her mind spiraled.

How could he possibly know?

Unless-

Unless he had been watching her long before today.

"Why me?" she whispered.

For the first time, something cracked in his composure.

Something almost... personal.

"Because," he said softly, "you were never meant to belong to him."

Her pulse thundered.

Sirens wailed faintly outside.

Somewhere in the city, the world continued normally.

But Isabella's life had just detonated twice in one morning.

Divorced at midnight.

Married at dawn.

And standing before a man who clearly had secrets she hadn't even begun to uncover.

Alexander extended his hand.

"Come home, Mrs. Laurent."

She stared at it.

And wondered

Had she just escaped a betrayal...

Or stepped into a far more dangerous game?
