"You're pregnant. Congratulations!"
At that moment, Raegan Hayes seemed somewhat distracted. Her thoughts were consumed by the doctor's words from earlier in the day.
Suddenly, Mitchel Dixon pinched her sharply, and said in a low voice, "What are you thinking about?"
Before Raegan could reply, he grabbed the back of her head and kissed her passionately.
After their intimate moment, Mitchel got up and walked to the bathroom.
Raegan remained on the large bed, feeling completely drained, her hair drenched, her eyes resembling deep pools, showing sheer exhaustion.
After a while, she opened the drawer and pulled out the pregnancy test report.
That afternoon, Raegan visited the hospital due to stomach discomfort. A blood test revealed she was nearly five weeks pregnant.
At that time, Raegan was shocked, as they had always taken precautions.
The sound of water dripping echoed from the bathroom, where her secret husband of two years, Mitchel, was. He was also her superior, the CEO of the Dixon Group.
Their relationship began with a drunken accident that led to a night together soon after she started her job in the Dixon Group.
When Mitchel's grandfather became seriously ill, he suggested a sham marriage to fulfill his grandfather's desire to see him settled down.
They signed a prenuptial agreement and kept their marriage hidden from their coworkers, knowing they could end it whenever they chose.
At that time, Raegan felt like she had hit the jackpot. She had adored Mitchel secretly for eight years and was thrilled to marry him, so she accepted his proposal without hesitation.
After they got married, Mitchel often disappeared for work, even being away for twenty-five days a month sometimes. Yet, in those two years, he remained faithful. No other women and no scandals surrounded him.
Despite his aloof demeanor, Mitchel was nearly the ideal husband.
Holding the pregnancy test report, Raegan felt a mix of joy and worry. She decided it was time to tell him. She also wanted to reveal that their meeting two years ago wasn't their first. She had loved him for a total of ten years!
In the bathroom, the water finally stopped.
As soon as Mitchel came out, his phone rang, and he went to the balcony to answer it, wearing only a towel.
Raegan checked the time. It was already past midnight. She grew uneasy. Who could be calling at such a late hour?
After the phone call, Mitchel approached. Without hesitating, he untied his towel. His physique was impressive, showcasing defined abs, strong muscles, and lengthy legs.
Even though Raegan had seen him like this many times, she still blushed and her heart raced.
Mitchel went over to the bedside, grabbed his shirt and pants, and dressed himself. His attractive hands fastened his tie, and his sharp, handsome features looked noble and elegant. He was so striking that it almost made Raegan's head spin.
"Get some rest," Mitchel said.
Was he planning to leave? Raegan felt a sting of disappointment, holding the pregnancy test report tightly and unconsciously pulling back. After thinking it over, she murmured, "It's really late."
Mitchel, who was adjusting his tie, stopped and reached out to lightly tug on her earlobe, his lips curling slightly. "Not feeling sleepy tonight?"
Raegan's cheeks turned red, and her heart thumped uncontrollably. Just as she was about to respond, he let go of her and said, "Be good. I still have some work to do. Don't wait up for me."
Then, he walked out.
Left alone at home, Raegan tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep. Out of boredom, she picked up her phone and began scrolling through it.
Her phone displayed updates from the entertainment news.
She wasn't particularly interested, but just as she was about to switch off her phone, a familiar name caught her eye, compelling her to click on it. "Lauren Murray, the designer, returns to the country, spotted at the airport with her mysterious boyfriend?"
In the photo, Lauren wore a hat, and the man with her was only partially visible, but his impressive stature was noticeable.
Raegan zoomed in on the photo, her mind racing. That man was actually Mitchel! Had he canceled an afternoon meeting at the last minute to meet his ex-girlfriend Lauren at the airport?
Suddenly, Raegan felt an intense pressure in her chest, causing her to panic. Her hands trembling, she accidentally pressed Mitchel's phone number.
Flustered, Raegan was just about to disconnect the call when a voice answered on the other end. "Hello?" The woman's voice was soothingly gentle.
Raegan hesitated for a brief moment and abruptly dropped the phone.
Immediately afterward, her stomach churned as if it were being stirred, and she rushed to the bathroom to throw up violently.
After daybreak, Raegan arrived at work on time.
Initially, following their flash marriage, Mitchel preferred that Raegan stay home, but she insisted on working.
Mitchel agreed but didn't allow Raegan to go elsewhere. She worked closely with him as an assistant, handling minor tasks. He left the important issues to his special assistant, Matteo Jenkins.
Within the company, apart from Matteo, nobody knew Raegan was Mitchel's wife.
Moreover, the CEO's office at the Dixon Group traditionally hired only male assistants. Raegan was the exception over these two years, leading to rumors about her relationship with Mitchel.
As time passed and it became apparent that Mitchel treated Raegan no differently, colleagues respected her even less. They assumed her beauty wouldn't keep her in the good graces forever.
At that moment, a colleague handed Raegan a document and asked her to take it to the CEO's office.
Last night, Mitchel didn't make it back home, and Raegan failed to fall asleep the entire night. Her mind buzzed with questions. Who was that woman on the phone? Had they spent the night together? The answer seemed obvious, yet she was too scared to even consider it.
Sometimes, a harsh reality check was needed to snap one out of denial.
Raegan, surprisingly calm, decided that, no matter what, she wanted a result, to give herself closure after ten years of secret admiration for Mitchel.
With poise, Raegan pressed the elevator button and ascended. Before exiting the elevator, she adjusted her hair to make sure she looked presentable.
At the doorway of the CEO's office, she stopped when she heard a man's voice through the slightly open mahogany door.
"Do you like Raegan or not?" It was Luis Stevens, Mitchel's childhood friend, who asked.
"What are you trying to say?" Mitchel responded with a clear, cold voice.
Luis clicked his tongue and asked, "I think Raegan is quite impressive. Doesn't she fit your taste?"
"Do you have feelings for her?" Mitchel asked casually.
"Just forget it." Luis' scornful laughter echoed from within the room, a bitter blow to Raegan.
Raegan's breathing hitched, her grip on the document tightened, and her hand grew cold. They were discussing her as if she were merely an object...
Soon, Luis spoke again. "The rumor protagonist in that news about Lauren is you, right?"
"Yeah."
"Wow, you're really ready to give up everything to win her favor." Luis sighed and playfully said, "So you spent the whole night with her, huh?"
It felt like a bolt of lightning had struck directly above Raegan's head. Her face turned pale, and her entire body chilled to the bone. Whole night!
Each word was like a forceful stab to Raegan's heart. Voices clashed loudly in her mind, making her dizzy and blurring her vision and hearing.
Just as Raegan was about to escape, the door clicked open.
"Raegan?" The one opening the door was Luis, who seemed to leave.
Raegan clenched her fingers, managed a composed look, and said with a nod, "Hello, Mr. Stevens."
She then walked past Luis and handed over the document to Mitchel.
In front of the luxurious desk, Mitchel, dressed in an expensive suit, looked exceptionally handsome.
Yet, Raegan noticed this was not the suit Mitchel had worn the previous night. She lowered her eyes and said, "Mr. Dixon, here's the marketing report. Please sign it."
Mitchel's face showed no change as he signed and shoved the document back.
Raegan took it and walked away. Luis, still surprised by Raegan's sudden presence, remained at the doorway.
Only when Raegan's figure vanished into the elevator did Luis finally say, "Damn, did Raegan overhear something?"
Mitchel's eyes stayed calm, unbothered by Luis' remark. To him, Raegan was always kind and never showed jealousy. As long as she behaved, he wouldn't treat her unfairly.
Inside the elevator.
Raegan lifted her head, trying to stop her tears from falling, but they still escaped from the corners of her eyes, trickling down into her ears.
She had thought two years were enough for Mitchel to recognize her love and her worth. However, it seemed to be all just her hopeful thinking. It turned out, no matter her efforts, she was still insignificant compared to his first love.
The elevator doors slid open, and Raegan had regained her usual composure, though her face was noticeably pale.
She pushed herself to walk into the pantry, aiming to make a cup of coffee to soothe her thoughts.
"Oh, have you finally woken up from your fantasy of being the CEO's wife?" A mocking laugh followed the question. It was Tessa Lloyd, Mitchel's cousin, who had never gotten along with Raegan.
Not wanting to cause a scene at work, Raegan turned to leave but Tessa blocked her way.
Holding a cup of coffee, Tessa sneered, "Now that Lauren is back, do you really think Mitchel would bother with someone like you?"
Seeing Raegan ignoring her, Tessa continued to mock, "Should I set you up with some old men? You seem to be quite adaptable. It wouldn't matter who you sleep with, right?"
Raegan tensed, her fist tightening at her side, and replied sharply, "This is a workplace, not a brothel. Miss Lloyd, perhaps you should take your business elsewhere."
"You!" Tessa felt insulted by being indirectly called a procuress.
Tessa's face fell. In a fit of anger, she threw the newly made coffee at Raegan.
Caught off guard, Raegan quickly tried to block it, but the scalding coffee splashed over her arm, turning her delicate skin red.
Raegan grimaced in pain and retaliated with a slap.
Tessa was stunned. It was unexpected that Raegan, normally so restrained, would hit her. She paused, clearly shocked.
After some time passed, Tessa gritted her teeth and snapped, "How dare you hit me!"
Raegan simply gave Tessa a cold stare. "Consider it a lesson in manners."
Tessa's face turned pale. Being Mitchel's cousin, she was accustomed to having things her way. This was the first time she had been struck so bluntly. "You bitch!" She lunged forward as though she had gone mad, her hand raised high, aiming to slap Raegan across the face.
"Stop!" A deep male voice sounded from behind, and Mitchel, who had just walked out of the office, saw what was happening.
Suddenly, the room became quiet.
"Mitchel?" Tessa felt a bit scared of him. After all, Mitchel was known for his strictness, and her mother had always told her to act properly around him.
Yet, the thought of the slap made Tessa defiant again. She turned to Mitchel, her cheek red, and cried out in a trembling voice, "Mitchel, look, Raegan seems to have lost her mind!"
The sunlight outside was brilliantly bright, casting a shadow that played across Mitchel's handsome features.
Raegan's nose tingled. She felt wronged, and her hand, burned from the scalding coffee Tessa poured at her, ached.
Raegan's eyes met with Mitchel's, and Mitchel's brows knitted together deeply. "Miss Hayes, don't you remember the company's rules and regulations?"
Mitchel's detachment was like a barrier, suffocating Raegan.
Silence filled the room.
Raegan stood there, tall and straight, resembling a slender bamboo in the misty mountain scenery.
When Raegan first joined the Dixon Group, Mitchel had made it clear that the company was no place for her to lose her temper, and he would not tolerate her emotional outbursts.
Raegan understood and could see Mitchel's perspective. But at that moment, she desperately wanted to ask him if he had really listened to those slandering words against her, and if he agreed with them that she, Raegan, was merely a plaything in bed for him.
Raegan pinched her palm, fighting back the bitterness welling up inside, and bowed her head toward Tessa. "I'm sorry, as an employee of the Dixon Group, I shouldn't have hit you."
Tessa watched Raegan lower her head, a smug expression crossing her face. "Humph! Just because you apologized, don't think everything is okay now..."
Before Tessa could finish, Raegan cut her off, saying, "This slap was from me as an individual. As Raegan Hayes, I refuse to apologize."
After saying this, Raegan didn't glance back at Mitchel but walked past him.
Fuming, Tessa turned to Mitchel and said, "Mitchel, did you hear what that bitch said? She hit me like that and still acts so high and mighty. Call her back, and I'll slap her a hundred times!"
Mitchel observed Raegan's retreating figure, a shadow covering his dark eyes. "Enough," he said icily.
Tessa had always been messing around as a bully. Judging from Mitchel's lack of siding with Raegan just now, she assumed Mitchel didn't care about Raegan. She gritted her teeth, her eyes brimming with unmasked malice. "Next time, I'll make sure someone ruins her face!"
"Tessa Lloyd!" Mitchel's eyes narrowed. "This is the last time. Drop your schemes and don't bother her again!"
A chill ran through Tessa. Though not reconciled, she stuttered, "I... I got it..."
Mitchel shot a cold look at Tessa, then turned to Matteo standing behind him and ordered, "From now on, keep irrelevant people out."
Tessa, having not grasped the warning in Mitchel's words, said, "Mitchel, with such a big company, it's only right to have rules."
Just then, Matteo stepped up, motioned to Tessa and said, "Miss Lloyd, this way, please."
Only then did Tessa realize she was the irrelevant person Mitchel referred to.
