Walking like an Apple on everyone's eye, Vincaster had always made the ladies' eyes turn to a heart one. Even with a straight domineering cold aura, the girls still wanted to catch a glimpse of their devilishly drop-dead-gorgeous boss.
He was on his way from a board of trustees meeting back to his office, but he had to stop for a moment to answer the phone. Then, seeing his secretary's name assured him that it was an urgent situation, something related to the Liverteo's Foundation.
"What's wrong? Have you dine-in with the girl I asked you to date in place of me?" Vincaster asked.
"Yes, I successfully made her lose interest in you."
"Good job. By the way, where are you right now? Also, why do you sound troubled when we already solved the blind dates crisis?" He asked while grabbing the door to unlock his office.
"I'm here in your office, and we have a situation here," Daniel replied.
"Situ-" he dropped the call and lost the momentum to finish his statement. He furrowed his eyebrows as soon as his gaze met the chairman's eye.
"What are you doing here again, Chairman?" Vincaster asked without hiding his annoyed face towards the guy with hair that speaks his old age.
"Can't you greet this dying grandpa of yours with a warm smile?"
"You expect me to smile at a guy who is forcing me to get married? Seriously, grandpa, you already set me up to 15 dates as soon as I ascended as LV's CEO," says Vincaster as he sat on the opposite chair where chairman is. "Think whatever you want, I will bring her to meet you."
"Hearing you confidently say that makes me feel better," the chairman replied.
"That's good to hear. You have to live longer and wait for your great-grandchild, you hear me?"
Vincaster might sound mad and irritated with his grandpa, but it doesn't mean he doesn't love him. In fact, he was concerned with his health. Vincaster is worried sick that his grandpa might die too early if he kept on brushing off his dying wish.
"Dan, escort Chairman to his home."
Vincaster sat on his swivel chair after his grandpa and his secretary left. He massaged his forehead to release the accumulated stress from work and personal life struggle. Talking about marriage stresses him out, but he can't refuse his grandpa's wish, especially now that the only family he had has numbered months to live.
His eyes were just about to close when all of a sudden, his phone rang. He slides his finger on the phone screen to answer the call.
"Are you up for a drink tonight?"
It took him a minute to agree. Honestly, he is not fond of drinking in the bar because it was a waste of time. But this time, he considered it as a remedy to distract himself.
Meanwhile, Serina was staring blankly, holding a glass of Bacardi 151. Then her friend scolded her for taking so much time staring at the glass instead of sipping it.n Vincreste was seated.
"And you ditched all of them. Caster, I wanted to see you settle with a woman and create your own family before I vanish in this world. Can't you do me a little favor? I can't rest in peace knowing that you are still that unpassionate guy. You need a woman to warm your heart and also your bed." The chairman giggled after seeing the disgusted expression of his grandchild.
"I told you, I am waiting for a certain girl to marry me. You don't need to bother yourself finding me a woman," Vincaster replied. He obviously utters words out from his nose.
"You have used that excuse for the last few months. When can I meet this special girl who made my precious boy wait? You are referring to that girl you used to date during your high school days, weren't you?"
Vincaster ran his palm on his face, and he even signed before replying, "That girl and I had broken up a long time ago, and I warned you not to mention her again. Also, don't even mention her in front of my girl. Fine, I will ask her to meet you at least, but I can't guarantee you that she'll say yes immediately." Lies after lies, he kept on blabbering excuses. He knew the thought that grabbing whoever girl he could present to his grandpa was his last resort.
"Alright, I'm giving you at least a month. If you still insist on making excuses, I would think that you aren't going out with a woman but simply using an imaginary girl to avoid blind dates."
"We didn't come here to stare at the bottle of liquor. Why don't you sip it already?" says Psyche, a college friend of Serina and co-faculty at Liverteo Highschool academy.
"I can't afford this drink. Let's go home." She stood up and was about to leave, but her best friend was fast enough to catch her wrist.
"I did not drag you here to pay for your drinks, it's on me, so you don't have to worry about the price. We are here to unwind. Let your frustration go with the music and alcohol. Tonight, we are not professional but only human." Psyche grabbed her wrist and dragged her back to the sofa.
"Come on. I know how much you wanted to cry because your one-sided love finally ended today." Psyche added.
Hearing those statements had added salt to her already wounded heart. Her best friend did not lie tho. Indeed, the one-sided love she had for Xavier finally ended today.
Xavier was Serina's childhood friend. He was her crush ever since they were young. She thought there would be a chance for Xavier to see her more than his friend, but it turned out the woman he was interested in was Serina's older sister.
"So, when are they going to get married?" Psyche asked, but Serina threw a glare in return.
"That bitch dared to get pregnant without even contributing to pay our parents' debt and grandmother's hospital fee," she replied after emptying her glass of Bacardi.
Psyche bit her lower lips as she realized her question must have hurt her best friend. Suddenly Serina burst into tears while sipping directly in the bottle instead of pouring the Bacardi into the shot glass.
Serina stood up and went to the door, she grabbed the doorknob to open the door. Then, Psyche immediately stopped her from leaving again. Her intention was to let Serina meet a new guy. She thought that her friend should try dating for real to discard her long one-sided love. They were outside of the room Psyche had paid for, when a 6ft tall guy caught her attention.
Psyche smiled when she found a perfect target, and her eyes had followed where the guy went to. Serina noticed the wicked smile from her friend, and she even heard Psyche mouth the word 'Bingo!'
"Where are you taking me? I don't trust that smile and twinkle of your eyes."
"Let's have fun tonight. I promise you will never forget this night. In your whole 26 years of existence, this will be the first time you will ever thank me for being a wild friend," Psyche replied after dragging her to the room next to theirs.
"Hi, boys!"
Serina almost dropped her eyes with Psyche's shameless demeanor. She gasped in utter shock. She instantly stiffened, unable to move, then later threw a gaze at her best friend with 'what-the-hell-are-you-doing?-look'.
Only Vincaster had not even lifted his head to peek at the brazen girl who is obviously trying to hook up to whomever fragile enough to accept their invitation.
"My friend here is heartbroken, and she wanted to have fun for once. So, will you entertain us?"
"Don't mind her. I think my friend is already drunk. Sorry for causing trouble. Hmmm... we're heading out," Serina explained.
Vincaster heard her angelic voice, making him steal a few glances at her, not once but he even stared at her. Daniel and Keith noticed Vin's odd behavior. He isn't the type of guy to steal a few glances. Moreover, staring at the woman was never his style.
Daniel was intrigued by Psyche's character and had found himself studying the latter's superficials.
"Ehem." Keith cleared his throat to intervene. "Since you are here already, why don't you join us and clank a few shots of Vodka?"
Psyche already occupied a spot on the sofa before Serina could protest. They would not dare to share a table with these men if they knew that the guy they approached was the locale's mayor and the CEO. The boys had purposely worn a cosmetic and wig to hide their identity, but their great looks could not be contained in disguise.
"I'm Psyche Hudson, and this Serina, my best friend." She extended her hand, and Daniel immediately grabbed the chance to hold her hand in disguise of shaking hands.
"Just call me Dani. This guy is my brother, but we are not blood-related; call him Vin. Lastly, this guy is our senior colleague Mr. Kei." Daniel introduced themselves without disclosing who they really were.
Seri and Vin were silent all along while the two had been silently listening to Psyche and Dani's conversation, sometimes Keith intervenes.
"So, do you drink here for fun?" Psyche asked. She was already tipsy, yet she never shut her mouth, unlike Seri and Vin, who were silent cuz' they couldn't keep up with Psyche, Dani, and Keith's enthusiasm.
"Nope, we are here to console my brother. His grandpa is forcing him to get married, and he finally resorted to planning to get a woman who would enter into a contractual marriage with him."
"Your friend is broken-hearted, right? How about we ask her to marry my brother to get revenge on the guy who ditched her?" Daniel suggested without considering rationality, was it because of the alcohol or the urge to solve the problem; none of them is logical enough to support his suggestion.
Psyche didn't explain Serina's failed love story, and the guys assumed that she was dumped by a guy. She was about to set the facts straight when Serina suddenly stood up and laughed.
"Alright, let's do that! Where's my groom?" says Serina, who was already drunk. Her fury, disappointment, and drunkenness had mixed up, clouding her mind.
Whether it was fate or not, Mayor Keith had happened to bring his paper for marriage registration and certification because he went straight to the bar after solemnizing a marriage an hour ago.
Almost impossible and crazy, yet they end up signing a marriage registration and marking it with their fingerprint.
They got married on the spot, officiated by Mayor Keith.
Serina woke up and found herself lying on the couch. She looked around and didn't mind the messy paper scattered on the floor of Vincaster and his friend's private KTV room. She carefully wake-up her best friend.
She did not wait any longer, and she simply grabbed Psyche outside. She hailed a taxi in the middle of the night.
"I will never get drunk again, Psyche. My head was splitting, and I completely looked like a mess. Have you ever thought that it was dangerous to get drunk with strangers?" Serina knows that she is not in the position to blame her friend. She only protested at that time, but she never walked out in the first place. She is partly insane for allowing herself to lose her composure and conservative mindset.
"My bad. I will never ask you to go to a place you were uncomfortable with. I just want you to have your life because you are being hard on yourself."
"Anyway, we did not get ourselves involved in a silly act while we were drunk, right?" Serina asked because she failed to grasp a picture of what happened before she woke up somewhat sober.
"I guess so?" Psyche replied.
They both got back to their own lives and completely forgot their brazen drunk moment. Serina did not mind recollecting what they did in the KTV bars' private room. Everything was back from their usual routines, not until she received a piece of brown enveloped two months after the bar incident. The envelope was sealed with a tape imprinted with the word confidential.
She slid her hand inside to check what was inside the envelope, and to her surprise, she almost lost consciousness when she saw her name on the paper attached with someone else's name. She panicked after reading the word...
"Mrs. Serina A. Liverteo?!"
She closed her eyes and thought that her eyes were playing a trick. Once again, she scanned the paper only to find another unbelievable word imprinted in the sheet... 'Certificate of Marriage.'
"When did I get married?!" She crumpled the paper then walked back and forth while biting her right thumb's nail.
She only stopped walking back and forth when a phone call interrupted her. She took the phone from the top of her bedside drawer. Then, swiped her finger on the screen to accept the call.
"Mom, what brings you to call me late at night?" says Serina, disregarding her dilemma about her sudden marriage certificate.
"Seri, darling. Do you have classes to lecture tomorrow?" her mom asked on the other line.
"Yes, mom. Why'd you ask?"
"I just want to ask if you could attend Savinah's meeting tomorrow because I can't make it. I have a lot of parcels to deliver, and my boss fired three of my co-riders, so I had to excel in my work."
She sighed and closed her eyes in despair; Her mother need not work if only her salary could pay off their debt, her grandma's hospital bill, and her youngest sister's education fees.
"Why don't you ask Saniah? I bet she's always free since working to contribute to our family has never crossed her mind."
She was upset and jealous with her elder sister because she got to live comfortably with Xavier, who was Serina's long time crush.
"Come on, don't be too hard on your sister. She needed to visit the hospital for her pregnancy check-up. She can't come to attend your baby sister's meeting."
"Fine, what time is it? Let me see if it won't affect my schedule."
Before their conversation ended, Serina had no choice but to attend the school meeting of the youngest in their family. Then, after placing her phone in the drawer, she sat on the edge of her bed and stared at the crumpled paper.
"This isn't real," says Serina to herself as she lay on the bed, holding the crumpled paper, and thought that the crumpled paper on her hand would disappear once she woke up the day after tonight.
Then on the next day, she stretched out her hand as part of her morning routine. She jumped off the bed and accidentally stepped on something, a crumpled sheet, to be exact. Then, a memory of seeing her name in the signed marriage contract had poured into her mind.
She picked it up and uncrumpled it while murmuring, "It's not like I actually believe in this ridiculous piece of paper, but it wouldn't kill me to validate it on the civil registry."
She wore a casual teacher's uniform of LV university. She dropped by a civil registry before going to their old house in District 1 of Queshon City, to get her little sister. She's living alone for three years in District 3 of Queshon City to save fare and time. Fortunately, being a teacher in LV is a privilege because the university granted a studio-type boarding house for those who want it.
Serina shook her head as she laid her eyes on the LGU's employee. "You mean this thing is real? You aren't paid to throw jokes, so tell me the truth now. Ma'am, I ain't paying for taxes to receive this lame service," she added to clarify things.
"This is the third time I am telling you that your marriage with Mr. Vincaster Liverteo is registered, and it was officiated by our city Mayor, ma'am."
She wanted to stay and argue a little longer, but her time was limited. She had no choice but to disregard her problem for a brief moment, to focus on her sister and the meeting.
She attended a PTA meeting for her elementary sister, but her mind was clouded and itching to know who the hell was Vincaster Levirteo and where the effin hell she had heard of that name?
She was spacing out and failed to notice that the meeting was over. She had not understood what the meeting was all about because her mind kept on wandering. Fortunately, her sister is a studious student, thus she kept important minutes of the meeting.
"Sissy? The meeting is over. Are we going home now?" says Savinah.
"Huh?" Seri replied absent-mindedly.
"Sissy, are you alright? Does your work exhaust you that much?"
She faked a laugh as she stood up and held her sister's wrist. "Of course not. I'm doing fine in LV, it's just that I was thinking of the lecture for my class this afternoon."
"Sorry for taking much of your time. If only this meeting didn't require parents or adults, you wouldn't be forced to attend."
"Honey, it's alright. It's my job as your sister. By the way, I will hail a taxi for you since I need to be in my class two hours from now. You need to go straight home, okay? I might visit tonight after my shift since tomorrow is the start of semester break."
Serina is a teacher for senior high school, thus Saturday classes are part of her schedule. Savinah, on the other hand, was a grade four student from Toroan Public Elementary school.
After her class, she immediately left to research whoever the guy she got married to on that day. She was busy browsing the G*ogle while waiting outside for the cab to arrive.
Serina thought it was misinformation as she looked at several pictures because the guy in the photograph does not resemble the guy she met at the bar on that day, which might be the person she mistakenly married under the influence of alcohol.
She was determined to confirm and confront the guy, so she headed to the address of his company, 'Liverteo-Vasquez foundation'. A circle of local and international private Universities from kindergarten - degree courses. It was widely known as a school for medicine before it expanded.
"Excuse me, may I talk to Mr. Vincaster?" she politely asked the employee at the information desk.
"Do you have an appointment, ma'am?"
'Appointment my ass! I need to talk with that bastard right now, and I can't wait any longer, the hell with that appointment what-about!' If she was not protecting her teaching license, she had long gone caused a commotion.
She was about to speak when the guy she saw in the picture entered, then walked past her. She panicked that the chance to talk with him would turn into ash, and without even thinking, she yelled, "Stop! You! with a funny-looking devil eyebrow, I need to talk to you in private."
She could not think of anything to address him, and the first thing she noticed was the shape of his eyebrow which has an extension of inverted 'V' on each side, and it looks like a devil horn, but it does not deplete his dashing good looks.
Everyone was petrified when they heard her blasphemous mouth. Everyone murmured among themselves and called her crazy for digging her own grave.
Vincaster finds himself amused by Serina. He turned around and grabbed her wrist to drag her to the elevator. They were alone in that elevator, and he could clearly hear their own breathing.
"Excuse me, Mr. Liverteo, but can you get your hands off my wrist?"
He didn't glance at her, instead, held her tighter as he dragged her into his office. He locked the door and closed the window.
"I did not expect you to come here sooner, wife." Vincaster sat on the edge of his table.
Serina looked at him with disbelief. She took the marriage certificate out of her bag then tore it in front of Vincaster. "I am not into playing silly games, Mr. Liverteo. That freaking marriage is void, and I am filling a case for it."
"Are you sure you can afford the best attorney to help you with that? If I ruin your profession or kick you out from LV, where are you going to get the money?" He placed his hand on his waist as he stood up to sit on his swivel chair.
Suddenly, she could not control her anger towards him. Her hands moved on their accord to grab his tie but failed to pull it to strangle him because his hands were first to grab her waist. He pulled her closer before Serina could retort, and a sheepish devil smile revealed themselves as he struck a deal with her.
"Instead of wasting time trying to prove that our marriage is void, how about striking a deal with me?"
Serina soon realized that this guy might look cold outside, but he is a disgusting psycho inside.
"Be my wife until my grandfather died, and that is approximately one year from today's date. In return, I will pay your grandmother's hospital bill and loans. If I'm satisfied with your act, I might give your youngest sister a scholarship in LV until she finishes her degree," he added.
She stood up and distanced herself from whom she thought a psycho. At the back of her mind, there's a voice from her head saying, 'He was threatening me a while ago, then all of a sudden he wants to make bargains?'
She's torn between declining and accepting his offer. It is quite a tempting offer. "Deal, but I need assurance and a blueprint of our contract."
"Sure thing. Come see me tomorrow and prepare your proposed provision about our deal."
After sealing a deal by shaking their hands, she left the office. On her way back to her boarding house, Serina had thought that she had sold her freedom to earn easy money, but no one would make her family free from financial problems aside from that psychotic boss of LV.
"It's not like I will remain married to him for the rest of my life. He is doing it for his dying grandfather, and I'm doing it to save my family, it's a win-win situation," she mumbled while looking in the mirror after washing her face with soap and gentle water. "It's not like I'm going to fall for that Psychotic Vincaster Liverteo," she added.
And, that is what she thought for the first half of the year living with him on one roof, but love moves in mysterious ways. Despite his ever-changing mood and sweet-bitter treatment towards her, she still falls in love with him, the walking red flag as to what she names him.
Another half of the year came when the chairman passed away. She was on a one-week retreat activity that day when the news knocked on her phone. She asked Daniel to escort her back to where Vincaster was. When they arrived at Queshon City, she tried reaching him through a phone call, but no one answered.
Another unfortunate event happened; the car suddenly failed to function. She instructed Daniel to get it fixed, saying she could handle herself finding her husband.
She was in a taxi when she received a message from an unknown number, saying her husband was in a hotel. Although, she wasn't sure whether it was a prank or not, checking the place would not kill her. So, she went to find the hotel and room number. She found the door unlocked, her automatic response was to open the door, which she shouldn't have done...
She found Vincaster lying beside a woman, which drove her to boil and explode like an erupting volcano. She rushed towards them and slapped Vincaster by surprise. Although, she knew it was not her place to get mad because they were only husband and wife for a show, which ended yesterday when his grandfather died.
It was Serina's secret romantic feelings towards Vincaster that pushed her to lose sight of her place in his life. She was broken, disappointed, and confused. To avoid confrontation with him, she immediately runs outside the building.
Meanwhile, Vincaster, who woke up by his wife's blazing palm, had worn a confused look. He was too dumbfounded and speechless to speak with Serina. He only got his senses back when his wife walked out of the room. He tried to call her several times, but she was already far away. He ran after her and watched her remove their wedding ring from her finger. He sighed when she stopped running but accidentally, someone hit her arm causing the ring to roll on the ground. He tried to push her away from the approaching truck, but he was too late.
Vincaster was not aware of what was going on with Serina's mind. Why did she desperately chase after the ring?
"Call 911! My wife got into a car accident!"
It was the last thing Serina had heard, then she faintly smiled because she thought it was her imagination. A tear fell from her eyes as she wished to turn back time.
'If I were given a chance to live again or If I could turn back time, I will never let myself fall for Vincaster Liverteo.' It was her earnest wish before her heartbeat started beating slower.
Serina realized that her one-sided love towards her husband killed her...
A tear fell from her eyes when she accepted that she would leave her family without telling them the truth behind her marriage.
'I want to go back to the time when I wasn't in love with him...'
Suddenly a warm hand slapped her cheek... and when she opened her eyes, a dangerous existence was sitting on the edge of the bed.
"Why did you follow me even afterlife? Can't you just piss off? I died because of you." She thought that it was her last minute before she would enter the gates to the realm of heaven.
"Are you high on drugs? What the hell are you talking about?" says Vincaster.
Her eyes widened when she heard his voice and soon realized that she was in the bedroom with the man who caused her agony. She stood up and checked herself in the body-sized mirror without paying attention to the guy who left their room.
"Why am I alive...?"
She pinched her arm, and the pain inflicted had proved that it wasn't a dream or her being delirious.
"What kind of sorcery is this?"
Vincaster shook his head while watching Serina act silly in front of a mirror. He left their bedroom to get water in the kitchen, but before he could finish gulping the water on his throat, she suddenly appeared and yelled at him.
"I demand a divorce!" She stood in front of him, crossing her arms together.
Vin accidentally spits the water, and it sprinkles on Serina's face. Then, the latter used the hem of her nightgown to wipe her face.
She felt terrible about her taste in men and soon realized how insane she was falling for this guy who is sometimes cold and sometimes thoughtful towards her.
'I had a thing for a red flag like this bastard back then, but not this time, not in this second life of mine.'
"Let's divorce now." Serina's only solution to change her fate is to divorce him and live far away from him. She needs to change the present to survive in the future because if she stays with him, who knows the same unfortunate event would happen to her. She will never allow her feelings to get in this time because it will jeopardize her second chance to live peacefully.
"We just got married a week ago, and you have not yet fulfilled your duty as my contracted wife, yet you are demanding a divorce?" he asked as soon as he finished one glass of water. He stepped forward which made Seri confused. She didn't expect this to happen because it wasn't the way they had a conversation before she returned from her death. Nonetheless, they rarely had a conversation during their first three months together.
She suddenly thought that the order of events must have been changed since she altered what ought to happen today. She vividly remembered, back then, in the same kitchen for their honeymoon, she and Vincaster had only talked about how they would convince his grandfather and relatives that they got married out of love. After that, she simply used to walk past him after getting the fresh milk from their fridge. However, when she found out that she had returned from a year ago, her resolve to survive this time had grown stronger. And, without thinking twice, Serina hastily demanded a divorce, which unconsciously altered the chronological order from her past life.
Vincaster advanced one step forward, while Serina had stepped backward every time her husband stepped forward. She suddenly found herself cornered, with no steps to make anymore. Her back hit the wall, then she swallowed the lump in her throat as she watched him smirk.
"Have you grown bone overnight? Do you have money to pay back all the cheques I paid to save your family from sinking into a financial crisis? Have you forgotten about the clause we signed before coming here to Boracay for a fake honeymoon?" He trapped her between his arms, pressing her to the wall. He flaunted a confident and devilish smirk again before adding spies to his statement. "I will only honor divorcing you once the medium that forced us to enter this covenant has vanished in this world."
"Tsk! That d*mn clause," she mouthed as soon as she recalled the content of their contract. According to that specific clause, party A (Vincaster) and Party B (Serina) should make the chairman happy and at ease before his cessation. Both parties are allowed to divorce each other. In addition, if Party B had not caused trouble and misdeeds to party A, the money spent on Party A and her relatives would serve as an incentive from Party B. Otherwise, if Party A violates or demands to revoke the contract before meeting the condition, the latter must pay Party B twice the original amount spent by Party B; to reimburse the time and money Party B had spent to Party A during the duration of the contract.
"You better prepare to leave this place now. We are going back to Queshon City to meet my family and relatives, do not fail me. I expect you not to get flustered by my relatives' questions. Gave me award-winning acting. In return, I assure you to protect your privacy. No one at LV university would know that you are my wife. My relatives will zip their mouth because they respect my decisions. However, be mindful of Auntie Lucilla because she's a nagger. Don't lose your cool in front of her since she's fast to catch things."
Suddenly the hairs in her body crawled in cringe from hearing the same statement from her past and present feels like a scary deja vu. It was the same thing he uttered back then.
'So, even if I alter a few things the actual thing will still follow? What's the point of waking up and traveling back in time if the same shit would happen?" her mind was full of uncertainty, yet her resolve to change her fate brought her back to her senses.
"Forget about divorcing for now." She pushed him aside and went back to their bedroom to pack their belongings. She could not believe that she had to delay her decision to divorce him because of the timing and her financial instability.
He followed and silently watched her from behind. Meanwhile, she was too occupied talking to herself while putting her clothes on the luggage. She failed to notice her husband's presence, who was standing on the wall since she forgot to close the door, making it easy for Vincaster to avoid creating sound.
"I still haven't told my family about this marriage, if things will go according to what happened before... then... until I die, my family will never know the reason why I married that psycho," she mouthed and sighed afterward.
His eyebrow flinched when he heard her calling him a Psycho. He wanted to argue with her, but he chose to listen more. It was a sight for him seeing how odd Serina was.
"He already paid for everything, and if I wanted to divorce him right now, I need to pay twice, darn it. Why so cruel? If only I returned earlier, perhaps the time before I got entangled with him, I bet it would be easier to avoid him. Why do I have to return in time when it is complicated enough to get a divorce?"
At the back of his mind, he was perplexed by Serina's odd statement. His mind goes saying, "Returning earlier? What the hell is she talking about? It's not like she died and time traveled. Did I just marry a weird woman?"
He unconsciously smiled and whispered, "She's interesting."
