After walking all afternoon looking for a job, the beautiful young Louise arrived tired
at a coffee house owned by her friend Brenda.
Louise was a beautiful 20-year-old young lady with light olive skin and wavy long black hair. Her not so tall slim figure sat at 5.4 feet and was complimented by her sparkly honey brown eyes. She could even be a model, but she was almost a tomboy when it came to clothes. She loved baggy ones, sneakers, jeans and a large tee-shirts. Her hair would almost always be found in a tall bun, casting her beauty away. She would not wear anything special, not even makeup so as not to attract unnecessary attentions, but her beauty was so natural, that even like that she was still beautiful.
She had lost her parents in an accident when she was 11 years old and since then, she had been raised with a lot of love by her grandmother. Her grandmother Nani got sick and was admitted to a hospital, so Louise was now eager to get a job to support her grandmother since she did not have a big pension. With the poor old lady's income, she was unable to get all the medication she really needed.
"Wow! I'm so tired that I could sleep right here! I walked a lot today, but I have a good feeling this time," she said, sitting in a chair and leaning on the table
"That's good to hear, honey. I'm rooting for you, you know. You've already got the money to pay the utilities and if you need a place to crash let me know."
"Thanks for all the help Brenda, but I can't rely on you my whole life. I'll have to find a solution. In fact, I gotta pay my grandma's hospital bill next month, and I have no idea how though..." she said to her friend.
After that her cellphone rang, and when she picked the phone up she heard a stern male voice on the other end.
"Good afternoon, may I speak to Miss Louise?"
"Yes, it's her," she said full of hope.
"I'm Lucio and I speak from the company Fashion UY. You have been selected for the janitor job opening. Are you still available?"
"Yes, I definitely am!" she said jumping up and down with joy right in front of her friend.
"This is an immediate job opening, so please come tomorrow at 8 a.m. to the company to start, alright?"
"Yes, of course I will be there. Thank you very much," she said before hanging up. "I can't believe it! I knew it, Brenda! See? I told you I had a good feeling about this!" She had a feeling she would get the job, and she did!
"I'm very happy for you, my friend. Everything will be alright."
"Yes, it will be okay. Now I have to go. I have to tell Grandma the good news and get ready for my new job!
Catch you later!"
The next morning, Louise woke up early and got dressed, being very excited and eager to start on her new job.
Fashion UY, was a large well-known modeling company that also included other industries such as malls, cinemas, beauty salons, restaurants and much more always focusing on sophistication. The company was recognized internationally for its excellence, currently led by president Marcelo Fredo.
Marcelo was a 55-year-old man who had lived in England for some years, having his other company branch in New York run by his only son and heir, Leoni Fredo as well as his nephew Jorge Fredo.
Marcelo was forced to marry early, tying the knot with the daughter of a CEO. After marrying Marcelo and giving birth to their son Leoni, she discovered an alleged affair which lead her to fall sick and eventually pass away when her boy was only 6 years old. Soon after that, Marcelo felt so guilty that he immediately moved to England, leaving the young Leoni alone to be raised by only servants. Since then, Marcelo isolated himself and never called to check on his son. The rest of the family never called either, as all they cared about was money, status and power. That was how the boy grew up, in a world without love. At age 26, Leoni, after years of studying, became an intelligent and very rich man, but also very cold, rude, with no feelings or heart. His temper was terrible, and he didn't get along to anyone. He had no friends and his relatives were not close. He behaved like a tyrant as he would get everything he wanted as he finished those who dared to cross his path. The handsome slim man was about 6 feet tall, had brown hair sporting a modern haircut, sky blue eyes that attracted the eyes of many ladies, but his cold demeanor pushed people away.
Jorge Fredo, his cousin, was the only one who could talk to him, because they grew up close. Jorge understood him. He knew that all that self-centered behavior was resulted from nothing but sadness and loneliness. He was 25 years old and was the general vice president of the company. He was another handsome man with green eyes, blond hair and low cut beard. Unlike his cousin, Jorge was very friendly and polite, mostly because his childhood had been very different. His parents raised him very well, being the son of CEO Felipe Fredo, the owner of several businesses, very different from his brother Marcelo. Later, Jorge chose to work at the company in order to try and change the situation with his cousin.
His parents didn't really agree with his ideas, but he had already decided, and he was willing to work on it because he knew his cousin quite well. As soon as Louise arrived at the company, she immediately met Mr. Williams, head of the cleaning department. He took her documents and assigned her the tasks she had to accomplish. "Here you go, Miss Louise. These are your uniform and tools. Please put away your personal belongings and get started."
"Sounds perfect, Mr. Williams. I appreciate that."
Louise changed her clothes to a simple janitor white and grey vest with the company's emblem on the left side of the shirt near the chest. The emblem read Fashion UY and as she saw it she could not help herself but smile. She started her cleaning duties at the 20th floor. It had a huge hallway and several rooms. While she cleaned, she marveled at the beautiful and big place, not helping herself to notice a fancy office where a very pretty and elegant girl was flipping through some papers.
Behind the secretary there was a huge door that lead to yet another office, with a sign that read "General Director - DO NOT ENTER". She immediately shuddered wondering how tiring it must be to deal with all kinds of things of such a big company. That was something she could never make it. When she finished cleaning the entire floor, it was time to clean the glass on the doors and windows. She soon started to with one door and soon she realized there was a handsome man inside that room. That man was named Jorge and his beauty caught her attention. She could not take her eyes off of him.
'What a hottie!' she thought.
It was love at first sight.
But unfortunately her thoughts were interrupted by someone.
"Excuse me, Miss. But what are you doing here?"
Louise was very embarrassed, but immediately turned around in order to explain herself.
"I'm the new janitor, and I am to clean this door!"
She noticed how pretty the lady was. Her name was Cassia and she was one of the models of the company. She was a beautiful slender tall young woman with blonde hair and green eyes. She looked like a doll!
"I see, but I think it's quite clean already, don't you think?" she stated in a despicable tone.
"Yes, fair enough."
"You can start cleaning those lamps over there, since they are very dirty, and this is your job after all."
"Yes, absolutely."
After hearing that, Cassia left and thought
how that cleaning lady had the guts to look at Jorge with goo-goo eyes like that! How ridiculous that was! He was unreachable to her, a humble janitor!
Louise soon started cleaning the lamps and some other items made of glass, when she realized there were many beautiful people in that company. There were even famous celebrities. She got so distracted in her thoughts that, carelessly, she ended up breaking one of the glass articles, and trying to pick up the mess she made on the floor. She hurt her small and delicate hands, but she didn't care much, as she wiped the bloody wounds on her clothes and continued to pick up the broken glass. After all, who other than herself would clean up that mess? Right, no one else. She was busy picking up the broken glass, when suddenly heard a beautiful male voice speaking.
"Did you hurt yourself, lady?" When she realized that there was a well-dressed man standing in front of her, she immediately raised her head to look at him. It was Jorge. When she looked into his eyes, her face flushed. He was much more handsome up close. The young woman was frozen in place admiring his beauty.
"Did you just hear what I said?" he asked worried.
"Pardon? Oh, yes... Well... Don't worry it was just a scratch."
"But you're bleeding. You should go to the infirmary so they can bandage you up."
"Don't worry, I'm okay; and there's an infirmary here?"
"Yes, and apparently you don't know where it is. Come with me. I'll take you there."
The man grabbed her arm gently to help her up, and led her to the infirmary.
There was no one available at the infirmary and so the man realized that everyone was probably on lunch break. "Well, we're out of luck. I think everyone should be having lunch now, but don't worry, I'll fix you up myself." Jorge placed two chairs facing each other, and everything he was going to use beside her. The girl was shy and blushing the whole time, as she was alone with the handsome man. While he focused only on her hands, the young woman looked at his facial features in detail as they were very close.
'I must be dreaming, he is very handsome!' she thought to herself.
The man, noticing her silence, questioned her.
"Does it hurt?" "No, it just burns a little."
"You are new here, aren't you?" Then he looked at her name badge:
Louise.
"Yes I am. Today is my first day of work."
"Yes, I thought so when I noticed you didn't even know where the infirmary was. Be more careful next time. You could get hurt pretty seriously from glass."
"Yes indeed I should be."
"It's done. It's lunchtime now. You should have some lunch before getting back to work, alright?"
"Yes, I didn't even realize it's already this late."
"Well, time flies, and remember take care of your hand and watch the wound, okay?" "Yes, it's okay. Thanks and I'll get going now."
As the girl turned to leave, she said, "Sorry, but what is your name, sir?"
"Jorge."
"Oh yes, nice to meet you."
"My pleasure, see you soon."
The girl left feeling happy and excited, as she in fact knew the name of her new crush. Arriving at the cafeteria she noticed the place was huge and sophisticated. There were many people eating lunch and talking. She helped herself with some food but didn't know where to sit because she didn't know anyone. But then she suddenly heard a voice coming from behind her. "Hey, newbie, sit here!"
She turned and saw a nice girl to her left, with the same uniform as hers. It was Sinde, a girl who had worked in a cleaning company for some time. At the table there were some of her friends from the same cleaning department.
"Thanks."
Louise sat down and greeted everyone, she got to know a little bit about them and the company and when she noticed, it seemed like people were flocking together in small groups, so she could not help but wonder.
"People here has lunch sitting only with their colleagues?"
"Apparently you're smart", said Lucas, one of the ones who were sitting on her left. "By the way, what happened to your hand?"
"I got hurt by accident just now. It's just a cut."
"Yes, be more careful!"
"Here everything revolves around status and classes.
People don't mix."
"First class is related to the general manager, and the deputy; they don't even show up here, in fact. I see them a few times only. The second tier are partners, the third are shareholders, the fourth are the sector manager, the fifth is composed by the department heads, the sixth are the models and artists, the seventh are small managers, eighth are secretaries and receptionists, the ninth are security guards."
"Wow what about us?"
"In the bottom, which is tenth. We're not ashamed of it, though. In fact, the cleaning sector seems to be the best. All the other ones live off status, walking on each other trying to be better than everyone else."
"How awful!"
"Well, you are at the best group."
"It's our time to go, guys. Louise, finish your lunch and don't be late, otherwise Mr. Williams will be on your ass. It was nice to meet you. See you around."
"Likewise."
"See you around," said Sinde.
Louise finished her lunch alone and soon after continued her work. Her thoughts kept returning to the same thing, the handsome man Jorge.
After she was done at work, she went to the hospital to visit her grandmother and bring her some fresh clothes to change. She couldn't wait to tell her grandmother everything about the first day of her new job.
When Louise arrived at the hospital and entered her grandmother's room, she was welcomed with a beautiful smile.
Nani was on her bed crocheting and reading through some food recipes.
"Hi grandma, how have you been feeling? Any better?"
"Hello my little one. Yes, I am feeling better," said the lady with a loving expression in her eyes.
"Good to hear that, grandma. Look, I brought some clothes and books for you, and I also have good news."
"Thanks, you can leave them here. Now tell me more about this good news."
"I got a job and now I can buy your medicine and help you with the expenses."
Grandma Nani had been in hospital for two weeks dealing with high blood pressure issues, asthmatic bronchitis and to make things even worse, kidney failure. She needed to be kept under full observation by the doctor, as her condition was not very good. Although she was aware of it, she did not want to worry Louise. She knew that her granddaughter cared for her a lot, as she was Louise's only family left.
"I'm very happy for you my dear, but I don't want you to sacrifice yourself for me. Think about yourself first. I am aware you already know how to take care of yourself and you had to learn this the hard way, because I haven't been well enough to care for you. But still, I want you to focus on your studies and find a good husband to marry and be happy."
"Don't say that, Grandma. You're not a burden at all. I love you very much and I'm pleased to see you happy."
"I'm glad to hear that, but I still think you should have lived with your Uncle Andrew in California. You'd have access to good education there, and you'd be better off."
"Grandma that is enough. I won't leave you, and it's no use trying to convince me otherwise. I'll take care of you until the end. Isn't that what I have always promised you?" she said sternly. "There's no discussing this matter," she then added.
"Wow, you are as stubborn as your mother."
"And just as stubborn as yourself. Where do you think mom got it from?" "Haha."
The two spent a long time talking and laughing. Nani enjoyed as much time as possible with her granddaughter. After all, deep inside she knew that her health was worse than Louise imagined, but she never said anything because she didn't want to scare the girl.
It was getting late and Louise had to go home, though against her wishes, since the hospital had visitation hour rules.
She said goodbye to her grandmother and promised that she would visit her the following day.
The next day, as early as ever, there she was back at her job.
She was giving her best at work, right from the start she met Sinde, who proved to be a very nice girl.
Louise was very curious about her new crush, and as she was alone with Sinde, she decided to find out more about that man from her new colleague.
"Sinde, do you know who Jorge is?" Louise asked, pretending to be calm and casual.
"Who is this guy? I seemed to have heard people talking about him, but I have no idea who this person is." she pretended to be innocently curious.
Sinde looked at her with a surprised face and laughed hard.
"Jorge? If you're talking of the hot stuff, tall blond, green eyes, slim body god then the answer is of course I have heard of him. It's impossible not to know him, but why do you want to know about him?"
"No reason in particular. I think I just met someone who fit that description here the other day."
"Hot stuff, right?"
"Nah."
Louise blushed immediately.
"Well he is the..."
When Sinde was about to speak, she was interrupted by the voice of Mr. Williams, the person in charge of the cleaning department.
"What is that that I see? Are you two chit-chatting during work hours? Should I bring you girls some tea and snacks?"
The two girls were embarrassed and said, "No sir, we were just double checking a few things..."
"Is it true Sinde? You can start double checking tasks by working on these handrails. They are a mess! Just imagine what will happen if the boss passes by and sees this. He's at the company today, so don't get me in trouble. As for you, Louise, go clean the theater room. The artists will need to use it today. Yes. Down the corridor, turn left and it will be the last door. Keep that in mind and don't ever give me the talk that you don't know where to turn. You need to start learning where to go around here."
"Right on it, sir."
The two said goodbye and Louise went straight to the hallway, but when she turned left, she became a bit confused.
Because there were multiple hallways and multiple doors.
She walked over and started reading the signs on the doors.
Central Theater, Dance Theater, Orchestra Theater, Musical Theater... So many! ... "I will start on this one."
