My last class of the day finally came to an end. As the professor moved out, I threw my clipboard and pen into my backpack and fished out my phone which still had earphones plugged into it. Saying goodbye to my neighbor, I hurried out of the hall. I wasn't in the mood to talk to anyone so I stuck my earphones in my ears to shut out the world. A knot tied itself in my stomach when I remembered I was going to meet my new roommate. Meeting new people always gave me great anxiety.
A while later, I was outside my apartment building. I could hear Eminem's rap coming from inside. I frowned. That was surprising. Although most of the residents of the apartment building were students, no one ever played extremely loud music during weekdays at 5pm. Who wanted noise after a long stressful day? Apparently, someone did.
I met Chris, a boy who claimed to be in love with me as I ascended the stairs.
"Hey, Lynn." He said, smiling. He was good looking and really nice, the type of boy every girl needs in her life.
"Hey," I answered without slowing down so I couldn't talk to him. He was a cool person but I did not want to listen to how much he loved me all the time. He simply laughed and resumed his walk downstairs.
To my dismay, the music was blasting right from my room. That was a major turnoff. It seemed to me that I'd never get on well with my new roommate. I knocked a few times but nothing happened. Maybe he was in his bedroom. Besides, the music was too loud to hear anything.
I gave up waiting and opened my bag to find my keys. I had gotten used to my ex roommate Kari who always had an organized bag. She always found her keys easily and opened the door for us. Now I was alone with my messy bag. It took me almost five minutes to find the keys. I had to fish everything out before I could get them. I hoped I'd remember to keep them in the side of the bag next time.
I opened the door entered my living room which had drastically changed in the few hours I'd been away. The living room which had been extremely neat in the morning was now a mess with things everywhere; on the floor, table, seats, etcetera. And last of all, a boy and a girl making out on my couch.
I slammed the door closed so hard that they looked up in surprise. The girl who was lying below saw me first, the boy turned. He smiled and I almost went weak in the knees. He was even more handsome than I'd thought.
"Hey roommate," he said and leaned towards the girl, putting his lips back to hers. He lowered his body as his hand caressed her bare thigh.
"Not here!" I yelled, in competition with the excessively loud music. "Get off my couch!"
The libertine stood up with a smirk and walked to his room, followed by the girl who didn't even bother to put her top back on. He kissed her again outside the door to his bedroom and winked at me before going in. I had never met a more disrespectful person than the pair.
I walked to my room in anger. I was going to kill Jen and Kari for this. How did I end up with such annoying and uncaring friends? Kari had left me and moved in to live with her new boyfriend Ron. Apparently, he was more important than our friendship. On the other hand, Jen had agreed to the proposal that Ron's cousin, Alec should be my new roommate. Then, I the foolish girl had agreed without even knowing what type of person Alec was.
Desperate to get a roommate to share bills with, I had accepted without doing a background check.
I hated him already. It was his first day in the apartment but he'd already tried to have sex in the living room, played loud music on a weekday, and had made the room more messy than I'd ever seen before. Was that what I was going to live with for a full semester?
I was damned. That fool even had the guts to smile at me. His smile was good but I was not charmed because he seemed to be a jerk. I was not one to be swayed by looks.
I'd walked all the way from campus so I decided to take a shower. Pulling off my clothes, I rushed to the bathroom. The cold water soothed my mind and dry skin. It had been a hot day. I wanted to enjoy the sensation with all my mind but the scene I'd found kept replaying in my head.
I was too preoccupied with my thoughts to notice that the music had stopped. When I did notice, I realized I'd been in the bathroom for over thirty minutes, which was a long time for me. Remembering the dinner preparations I needed to start, I hurriedly wrapped a small towel around my body and stepped out of the bathroom.
What the hell?
Alec was seated on my bed, looking contented. I nearly ran back to the bathroom but decided to brave it all. It was high time I started locking my door since I now had a male roommate. I wondered what he wanted from my bedroom minutes after having sex. Seeing him on my bed made me feel nauseous.
"Ew, get off my bed." I said.
"You look very sexy in that towel, roommate," he smirked, checking me out. His gaze lingered a little too long on my chest.
Let's just say he didn't know who I was and what I was capable of. I pressed my lips together, heaving an exasperated sigh. I glared at him. "Get out, you moron."
He put his hands behind him on the bed and threw his head back. "Why should I?"
"I need to get dressed," I said, picking up the dirty clothes I'd left on the floor and dumping them into the laundry basket.
"Go ahead," he told me, a smile plastered on his face as he watched every move of mine. "No one is stopping you."
He was still looking at my body which made me uncomfortable because it was wrapped in a short towel that showed my legs. He did not seem even a bit uncomfortable but seemed to be enjoying the moment.
"I know you want to talk to me so bad but can you please go out for a sec?" I teased, expecting that to annoy him. Unfortunately, he just chuckled and got up. Instead of heading to the door, he moved towards me.
"What do you want?" I inquired when he came to close for my liking and touched my thigh. I felt a familiar ache inside me and was angry that I was feeling that way for a stranger. My closet was right behind me and he stood in front of me so I was trapped. When his body touched mine, I felt tingles allover and this made me push him away from me. I didn't want him to know that he had that much power over me.
"Get out of my room, you nasty fool."
"What if I don't?" he smirked. "What happens?"
"I've been in this apartment for a year and you just got in today so it's mine," I retorted. "I can easily turn you out. Will talk to the landlady tomorrow and you'll be kicked out."
"Very funny," he laughed.
"It's not a joke," I said in a serious tone. "I actually mean it."
"I would like to see you try."
"You just wait and see," I said. "That'll be tomorrow's business. Get out of my room. We'll talk later, if you want."
"Does it look like I want to talk to you?" he asked. "I want to take you to bed."
Disgusting.
"Do I look like a hoe to you? I don't sleep with strangers."
"I'm your roommate not a stranger," He smirked and took a step forward. I was really going to kill him but luckily for him, the girl called him from the living room.
"Done with my shower," I heard her say.
"Will be back," Alec breathed into my ear and headed to the door.
"Go to hell, Alec." I mouthed, following him. As soon as he stepped out, I locked my door and leaned against it. What just happened? Alec was really hot. I couldn't deny that, but did he just show interest in me? He did but that was probably what he did to every girl. He was a player, a kind of guy I didn't want to be involved with. I was going to turn him out. I was going to report him to Mrs. Bent who didn't like people who caused trouble in her building.
After my anger had lowered a little, I went to dress up. My usual after class wear had been mainly hot pants and tank tops but since I was now rooming with a boy, a horny one at that, I thought I'd put on something less revealing. Soon, I was done with applying lotion on my body and I put on a pair of jeans and a T-shirt. I headed to Druck's to buy something to eat.
On locking my door, I found unknown girl leaving. I could hear the sound of water rushing so assumed Alec was in the shower.
She stared at me, "Leave him alone, he is mine."
"Like I'd want dirty stuff like him," I laughed. "I've seen better."
I left the room. Going down the stairs, I met Chris again. Meeting a guy who likes you yet you don't feel the same is real torture. But this time, I was glad to see him. I don't know whether it was because I needed someone to talk to at that time or because he was holding a bag of eats from Druck's.
"Want to share?" I smiled and glanced at the bag.
Chris genuinely smiled like the nice guy he was.
"Of course," He said. "My room or yours?"
"Yours," I replied, leading the way up the stairs. "You don't want to know what is in mine."
"And that is?" He inquired.
"My new roommate."
"Does that mean she's prettier than you?" He asked.
I laughed and walked with him in silence till we reached his room. Ross, his roommate was lying on the couch watching soccer.
"Hey Ross," I slid into the little space his body had left on the couch.
"Hi honey," Ross got up and kissed my cheek. He was a really flirty guy and Chris hated that fact so much. Personally, I had no problem with it since it was refreshing. I lived a boring life, after all.
"You were still telling me about your new roommate, Lynn." Chris reminded me as he served a bag of chips in the kitchen.
"You got a new roomie?" Ross asked.
"Yeah" I sighed, "He's a total blockhead, I h-"
"He?" Chris cut me off. "You're living with a boy?"
He carried a plate of fries and set it on the table.
"That's really cool," Ross commented.
"No! You can't stay with him," Chris protested. "He'll ruin you"
"I'm getting rid of him tomorrow," I said.
"Wow, that's great. I hope he won't disturb you tonight."
"He can't do anything to me," I reassured him.
"I'm going to warn him right now," Chris walked to the door. I jumped up to stop him.
"There's no need for that," I said calmly. "I'll be okay."
"NO!" he yelled. "Don't stop me. This is for your own good."
I caught his arm to prevent him from opening the door.
Ross was dying of laughter. "You guys would make a really nice couple."
I felt embarrassed when he said that. Chris looked uneasy too. I loosened my hold on his arm and he turned back towards the room.
"Gotta get some drinks," he said, walking to the kitchen.
I got back to where I'd been seated, grabbed the remote from Ross and turned up the TV volume.
I woke up at 9 am the next morning which was very late since I had a class at 10. As soon as I opened my eyes, I jumped out of bed and dashed for the bathroom. There was no time to stay in bed till I felt strong like I'd always done.
Within thirty minutes, I was done with preparing myself for the day. Breakfast was out of the question, I would just take a cup of cold milk and that would take me till I got done with the lecture I was heading for.
After checking whether I had everything I needed in my backpack, I picked up my key and exited the room only to find Alec lying lazily on the couch.
"Morning," I greeted as I went my way to the kitchen. He looked up, seeming surprised.
"Hey lazy ass," Was his reply. I said nothing as I opened the fridge and took out a carton of milk then poured it into a glass. I went ahead to get some cookies from a glass jar.
On finishing, I left the kitchen, planning to clean it later. When I was almost at the main door, Alec stood up and ambled towards me. He grabbed my wrist.
"You're not going anywhere," He stated.
"I have a class and you can't tell me what to do," I protested, glaring at him despite feeling a bit intimidated under his sharp stare. I was beginning to wonder if he was sane.
"You're not getting out of this place."
I laughed.
"Why not?" I looked up at him.
"I need you to unpack my stuff and organize my room."
I tilted my head, laughing. The audacity.
"You're kidding, right?" I said. "Your girlfriend was here yesterday, I thought she'd helped you do all that."
"She isn't my girlfriend," He remarked. "Besides, she didn't come here to do that."
"And I'm here to do that?" I questioned, tilting my head.
"You're my roommate."
"That doesn't make me your maid," I said in annoyance. "For your information, I have to be in class by ten."
"Can't you ditch that for even once?" he asked.
"I attend all my classes," I told him. He was still holding my hand.
"Can you please help me, Lynn," he said, almost humbly. "I really can't do all the work alone."
Seeing Alec beg me to help him was so funny I wanted to laugh. I looked at him. His eyes were fixed on mine, which was very intimidating. I realized he was still holding my hand and it made me feel fuzzy.
"That's better," I was charmed by his desperate look. He looked almost innocent yet stunning. "I'll help you".
Alec smiled.
"I really appreciate it, Lynn." He said dropping my hand. I went and opened my bedroom door. On entering, I removed my blouse and knee length skirt then put on a tank top and three quarter shorts. Tying up my hair in a ponytail, I removed got my phone from the backpack.
I sent a text to Kari informing her that I wasn't going to attend the lecture. She'd be really shocked because I never missed a class for anything.
What's it? You sick?
Nuh...roommate issues. Bye n don't text back.
That would surely make her unhappy for she was the cause of it all. Why did she leave me to go and live with her new boyfriend? I didn't even like the idea because I never trusted Ron, her new love. I also didn't understand why she would move in with someone she barely knew.
Will be checking on you guys soon.
After reading the reply, I placed the phone on my bed and headed to Alec's room.
I walked straight inside as his door was open. Most of his stuff was still packed in suitcases and boxes so the room wasn't too messy. He was putting some clothes in the closet so I decided to start with getting the shoes onto the shoe rack.
"So, what are you studying?" I tried to start a conversation.
"Art and Design," he answered. "You?"
"Literature."
"That's too easy, I guess," He mocked. "I even wonder why you have to attend lectures every day."
"Oh," I picked up a pair of sneakers, carefully placing them on the shoe rack. I had no interest in getting into a useless argument, trying to make him understand that it was not easy.
"You got a boyfriend?" He asked all of a sudden.
"Why do you ask?" I inquired with lack of interest.
"Just wanted to know," He replied.
"I see," I wanted to avoid the topic.
"It's not like I am interested in you. I just don't want some guy coming here late in the night and having you moan so loud that I fail to sleep"
"You have a dirty mind," I remarked. "I'm not dating anyone."
He laughed. "I knew it."
So why did you ask?
I wasn't embarrassed about my relationship status because I was happy without a boyfriend. Not having one did not bother me at all because I never really needed one that much. Boys came with lots of stress and I already had enough stress to deal with in my life.
"Of course you knew it," I remarked sarcastically.
"Can I ask you a question?" He asked me when I was done with the shoes. I went on to lay his bed.
"What?"
"Nothing important," He said as he put the last shirt on a hanger. "But you're a pretty girl, I must say."
We were almost done with the cleaning when I heard a knock at the main door. Carrying the bucket and mop, I left Alec's bedroom. After leaving the cleaning supplies in the bathroom, I went to open the door. A girl was standing there.
"Hi," I began.
"Is Alec in?" She asked.
"Yeah," I said. "Come in."
She entered when he was just getting out of his room.
"I got your text," She smiled as he hugged her. "The room is now okay?"
"Yap," He kissed and led her to his room.
I was left alone, furious. I'd missed a lecture to clean Alec's room only for him to text a girl so they'd have good time in there? He'd acted really nice for all that time and I'd been fooled. It wasn't like I wanted him but couldn't he carry out his whoring acts elsewhere? I had been fooled but it was never going to happen again. I was getting rid of that bipolar whore.
I went out to see Mrs. Bent, the landlady.
