"Get out of my sight you incompetent thing! Mr. Clark screamed, holding the broken pieces of his most expensive vase in his trembling hands.
The maid, Camille, stood far apart, shaking visibly and most importantly, waiting. Waiting for the words that would determine her next line of action.
She had committed the most unforgivable act and she knew that Mr. Clark would never consider the fact that she had been the family maid for several months.
Then she remembered that Mr. Clark did not like to repeat himself, so she already knew her fate.
Taking one last glance at the fury in Mr. Clark's eyes, she scurried away holding back the tears in her eyes.
"I will consider the fact that you have served us for several months and that my kids love you. But never forget that these are the only reasons you are still here. One more strike and you are out! Do I make myself clear, Camille?!" Mr. Adrien warned, his bold voice resounding throughout the room.
Camille shivered a little, before answering.
"Ye...yes, sir Clark. Thank you so much" she nodded, tracing the lines on her hands.
Mr. Clark was ruthless and she was lucky that the very few people that mattered to him loved her.
Unless, she would be out of employment and unable to care for herself and her mother, especially with the peanuts she was being paid with in exchange for her undying loyalty to the family.
Then she turned, walking away from the scene. Just as she approached the hallway which was covered in several expensive art pieces, the family dog came running out of nowhere and the next thing she heard was a loud crash.
Camille looked up from the ground to see Mr. Clark standing directly in front of her with the most furious look she had ever seen.
A costly glass art piece lay shattered on the floor, Camille's life was over.
...
Adrien walked quickly towards the car park. His chauffeur, Marcel, approached him fully dressed in his uniform.
"Good Morning Mr. LeBlanc, what car are you using today?" Adrien quickly scanned through the row of cars and his eyes rested on his favorite, the Mercedes Benz S600 Maybach.
"The Maybach" he responded.
"Very well sir" Marcel said and pulled the keys to the car from his blazer pockets.
He opened a passenger door and Adrien entered majestically before he shut the door and entered through the driver's door. Marcel adjusted the mirrors and started the car.
"Remind me to go over the paperwork of the new car after work hours today, Marcel" Adrien ordered.
"Yes Mr. LeBlanc" Marcel replied.
Twenty minutes later, Marcel approached the car park of the LeBlanc Multinational Companies building and parked in Adrien's reserved parking spot, before getting down to open the door for Adrien to leave the car. Adrien adjusted his crisp black suit and walked into the building. Every staff member was already in their offices and booths for the interns.
He had already seen them scamper around when Marcel drove around to park the car.
"Bumbling fools " he muttered.
He always expected a sense of class and expertise in coordination from them but they always disappointed him.
As usual, his Personal Assistant was late. "I'm so sorry Mr. LeBlanc" she said, almost out of breath.
She had obviously been running. She reached for his briefcase and he drew his hand back quickly.
"Why are you late Viola, AGAIN?!" he demanded.
"I...I...I had to sleep at a friend's place which is really far from here because I was chased out for not paying my rent...and...and then there was a lot of traffic and I had to stop for breakfast because my pregnancy hormones were...".
"Save it! Remind again why you're pregnant and still working for me! Because I have been merciful enough! I demand good service from you, that's why I pay you Viola. What do you do with all that money?" Adrien interrupted angrily.
"I...My daughter...she's very sick. She needs a kidney transplant or she'll die and all the money I save, it goes towards that, Mr. LeBlanc" Viola replied.
Adrien was silent. The atmosphere was thick. Every single person in the hall stared at Viola.
Viola swallowed a lump and continued;
"I was hoping you could make my daughter a beneficiary under your charity foundation Mr. LeBlanc. It would be of a great benefit to me and I will never come late ever again. No excuses again, I promise"
"No. First of all, I choose who becomes a beneficiary and it is certainly not the likes of lazy unaspiring people like you. Secondly, you won't be coming to work late anymore because you're fired. I'm tired of the string of inefficient P.As so you'll be the last one Viola. Go and take care of your pregnancy" Adrien replied.
Viola dropped to her knees in tears.
"Please I beg you, Mr. LeBlanc, please this is the only thing I have. My husband is dead, my child is ill, please Mr. LeBlanc".
"Someone get her off the floor and out of here! I have a proposal today! Where is my secretary?" Adrien ordered, walking towards his office.
"Here Sir! Good Morning Sir!" a small voice responded sharply.
"Why does your voice sound like a little girl's own? Fix that. Get the files I requested for yesterday and bring them to my office. Study the materials that came in yesterday because you'll be my assistant at the meeting with the St. Pierre investors" Adrien ordered.
"Yes sir" She nodded and moved towards the door.
"One last thing..." Adrien said.
" Do not, under any circumstances, allow Viola back into this premises ever again. Lazy people like her should be taught a lesson".
"Yes sir" she replied and left the office, shutting the door behind her.
Adrien sat behind his desk and heaved a sigh of relief. He touched the desk and it was dusty.
It had obviously not been cleaned this morning. Adrien was furious.
"How is everyone this incompetent for God's sake?! What am I paying them for?!"
He picked up the telephone beside him and called the secretary.
"Send all the janitors to my office now!" he ordered and dropped the phone.
A large number of people in cleaning uniform trooped into Adrien's office the next minute, murmuring their good mornings to him.
They knew there was only one reason Adrien would send for all of them at once: to teach one of them a lesson and make the others watch.
"Who was supposed to clean my office this morning?" Adrien inquired.
Everybody remained silent.
"I said, who was supposed to clean my office this morning?! Somebody answer me before I fire all of you!" Adrien threatened.
A small elderly man made his way through the small crowd to the front.
"Good Morning Sir, My name is...".
" You're fired. The rest of you can return to whatever you were doing. One person should stay behind and clean my office while I grab breakfast from the cafeteria" Adrien interrupted.
Everybody trooped out, leaving the small man and another worker who volunteered to clean the office.
"Please sir, I honestly forgot. It was an honest mistake I promise. I don't have anything else and I'm an elderly man. Please sir, it will never repeat itself again" the small man pleaded.
Adrien stood up from his desk and picked up his phone from his desk.
"Make sure he leaves before you start cleaning" he instructed the other worker and stepped out of the office.
"Sir, the St. Pierre investors are here " Adrien's secretary said.
Adrien sat up straight in his chair, adjusted his suit and put some files together.
"Okay. Grab those files and follow me" Adrien responded, pointing to the files on the left side of his desk.
He was feeling more energetic since he had already had his morning coffee. He left the office with his secretary following behind him.
The meeting with the St. Pierre Interiors Company investors was a success and they agreed to invest in his company, not only because of the massive benefits it would fetch them, but also because of Adrien's work ethics and prominence in the business world. Another win for Adrien.
Now all he had to do was ensure that his staff worked on the contract immediately and his supervisor reported to him on the updates of other contracts, while he prepared his speech for a business seminar coming up. Adrien relaxed in his chair and jotted down little ideas he got for his speech.
"Hey Hun!" A lady flung his office door open.
Adrien stood up immediately, surprised.
"Elise, what are you doing here?" he whispered, shutting the door.
"Well I missed you. Didn't you miss me boo?" She responded casually.
"I am not your boo first of all. Secondly, don't ever come to my workplace again!" Adrien replied.
Elise made a sad pout with her face and moved closer to Adrien, until there was no room between them. She arranged his collar, dusted off imaginary dirt and drew Adrien's lips into a kiss. Adrien couldn't resist especially since most of his ex girlfriends had just refused to move on from him.
He smashed his lips against hers and let his hands wander around her body, lifting her up and placing her on his desk table. Elise kept breathing heavily as she threw her purse across the desk and took off Adrien's suit, reaching for his shirt buttons and almost ripping them off.
When his shirt was off, she threw her hands around his neck and pulled him in for a steamy kiss, as his hands wandered around her body.
After a few minutes, Adrien released himself from her grasp and laid back on the wall, breathing heavily. He then straightened his shirt, putting on his suit after.
He was suddenly disgusted with himself for entertaining her at his workplace, especially since they were not together any longer. She at least deserved the chance to move on from him without any distractions.
"Get up" he instructed Elise, who sat in his chair.
She used her hands to straighten the crease in her dress, before walking into the bathroom in Adrien's office to straighten her hair and fix her makeup.
A few minutes later, she appeared as though nothing had happened between them.
"So...when will I see you again?" She asked, twirling a hair strand.
"Never. Now get out, I have work to do" Adrien replied harshly.
"Jeez...okay. I had an amazing time though" she replied, smiling politely.
Adrien remained silent, not bothering to look up from his jotter.
"Okay, bye" Elise murmured and shut the door.
Adrien picked up the work telephone beside him, punching a few of the number squares on it.
"Set up a meeting with all the heads of department by noon" he said to his secretary.
An hour later, he was sitting in the boardroom with every head of a department in LeBlanc Multinational Companies. Adrien cleared his throat.
"I have received news that my company is too uptight. No room for young minds or something like that. It's making waves on social media and we have to fix my company's image before this news causes further damage. Now tell me, how do we appeal to the younger demographic?" Adrien spoke, void of emotion.
The atmosphere was tense and none of the heads could afford to offer anything short of brilliant suggestions as they already knew their fate if they did.
"Last time I checked, I was communicating with human beings, right?! No one should remain silent. I need suggestions, stat!" He broke the silence, picking up his pen.
"Company social media! Sir, I personally feel it's time for a change in the creative department. Replace the old with the new, fresh young minds who know everything about the media these days" one of them suggested, earning disgusted side glances from the head of the creative department.
"That is...unnecessary. We don't need any more exposure than we already have because we are the best at what we do. Plus, I'm sure you would not love the creative department to suggest your unemployment, would you? Everyone here has an equal part to play. Now what have I told you about unnecessary ass-kissing, Darren?" Adrien spoke, choosing his words carefully while fixing his gaze at Darren.
He could see the fear in his eyes, just like he wanted. He knew what came next.
"It will get me nowhere near you, sir" Darren answered, surrendering his willpower.
"Good. Now, any other suggestions? USEFUL suggestions?" Adrien answered, looking around the room.
"Sir, how would you feel about a fresh recruit?" Another head pitched.
Everyone knew how he felt about recruiting new employees, a task which he considered too crucial.
"And before you say anything sir, I have another thing to add..." he continued, watching Adrien's facial expression.
"A charity. Perhaps, your foundation, THE ADRIEN LEBLANC FOUNDATION. Recruiting new employees from the beneficiaries of the foundation who are up to age and have some employment experience. It would appeal to every demographic. This way, everyone sees the company as anything but uptight and the creative department could work on making the whole process go viral" he added, demonstrating with his fingers.
Adrien nodded satisfactorily.
"Interesting..." Adrien commented.
"Also, you could make an announcement at your upcoming birthday where the press would be lodged. They would have a field day with this information, trying to repair your image" he added, spotting a smug smile.
"Brilliant! Now, that is a suggestion. Everyone, give him a round of applause!" Adrien smiled wide.
The others followed promptly, clapping for him.
"Sam, right? You will be in charge of this project. At the end of it, I have a surprise for you" Adrien pointed, walking out of the boardroom before it was drowned with cheers for Sam.
It was unusual for him to applaud any of their suggestions and whenever any of them managed to intrigue him, they celebrated amongst themselves.
A WEEK LATER
"Next! I have a Miss Camille Vincent!" The recruiter called.
It was the day that the unemployed beneficiaries were going to be granted interviews and if they passed, a chance to work in the reputable LeBlanc Multinational Companies. Camille exhaled nervously. All her life boiled down to this moment and if she didn't make it, she might as well just watch her mother die slowly.
"Breath Camille, you'll be fine. I believe in you" Camille's best friend Simone said, taking her hand to reassure her.
Camille smiled warmly at her, inhaled and exhaled and moved forward from the line.
The line to the recruiting table felt longer all of a sudden than the same one she had been looking at for the past five minutes. Her old shoes felt wobbly and she prayed silently that today was not going to be the day they finally gave out.
She had to appear confident, just like her mother had instructed her, if she wanted to look capable of working. She straightened her hair, fastened the buttons on her maroon blazer, clutched her file case and walked faster.
"Good Morning" Camille said politely.
The recruiter looked up from the desk. "Took you long enough... " he joked sweetly.
"Good morning Miss Vincent, can I have your credentials?" he continued.
Camille presented the file to him and he went through every piece of paper inside, nodding in an impressed manner. He proceeded to ask her a number of work related questions.
This was Camille's second job interview. She had worked only once before now and it was at a small firm, so she had very little experience and hoped that her confidence would speak for her. A few minutes later, he was done.
"Thank you for your time Miss Vincent. We'll get back to you".
Camille nodded and left the desk, spotting a polite smile.
"Next! I have a Miss Simone Jarvis" Camille heard behind her.
She rushed down to her friend and held her hand as they spoke quickly.
"How was it?".
"Good, I have a good feeling about it Simone, I'm so happy".
"I'm so happy for you too. Wish me good luck".
"Good luck babe. I'll be waiting for you".
Simone walked down to the desk while Camille took a seat at the back.
She pulled out her phone from her purse and dialed her mother's number.
"Hello Cam. How did it go?" Helene began, speaking slowly because of her illness.
"I don't know what the outcome is going to be, mum, but I have a good feeling. How are you feeling mum? Have you had anything to eat? I left some...".
"No Cam, I don't have the appetite for those things".
"But mum, the doctor said you have to eat something before taking your medicine. I can't afford to take you back to that hospital mum so please take your medicine and eat well for now. Promise me you'll do that" Camille replied.
"Fine, I will. I really hope you get this job so I can be less of a burden to you" Helene responded, sniffling over the phone.
"Mum it's my responsibility to care for you whether you're ill or not. I have to go now mum, Simone is done with her interview and I promised to go somewhere with her".
"Okay, Bye Cam. Stay safe" Helene responded and ended the call.
Simone was already walking down to Camille's seat with a sweet smile.
"The odds are in our favor, Cam! " Simone said, squealing silently.
"I really hope so, Simone" Camille responded excitedly.
"Next stop, my place. Let's go babe" Simone announced and Camille stood up, following her out of the building.
"Ah!" Camille exclaimed as her file case flew out of her hands, her files littering the floor.
"Watch where you're going for God's sake! Bumbling fools!" Adrien yelled.
"I...I'm so sorry sir, I didn't see you coming" Camille pleaded, bending down to pick up the papers on the floor.
Simone joined her, pleading. Adrien said nothing and moved forward, stepping on some of the papers.
"No! Please, I begged you already. Those papers are my life!" Camille cried out.
Adrien continued moving, obviously ignoring her.
"Hey Mr.! How callous could you be! She begged you already. Who do you think you are even?!" Simone yelled, backing her friend up.
Adrien turned around slowly.
"Adrien LeBlanc, CEO of LeBlanc Multinational Companies. And I can assure you both that you will definitely not be getting employment in my company any time soon. Bumbling fools!" Adrien replied and stepped into the building, leaving their jaws dropped.
"And where is the list of the people your team interviewed?" Adrien demanded.
The Manager of the recruiting team handed over a printed file to him.
"Hmm...okay, that's fine. You can email them all their employment letters. They will all be working as interns right?" Adrien replied.
"Yes sir, except one of them which will be replacing your secretary" the manager responded.
"Replacing my secretary, why?".
"Your secretary dropped her resignation letter just yesterday sir. The General Manager mentioned something about a business meeting you were at and he approved her resignation".
"Oh, that's fine. Thank you for the information. You may leave now" Adrien replied and sank into his chair.
"Why did she leave?" Adrien wondered, mumbling to himself.
He flashed back to the day before when she had come to discuss a business proposal of a client with him and ended up professing her feelings of admiration for him.
Adrien had been surprised but he took it well, because he was used to being admired even by his female employees.
Suzanne was brave enough though and attempted to seduce him. Adrien was not having it because he had a policy of not having any sexual relationship with his female workers to avoid any sense of entitlement or blackmail.
He however, was in a good mood and turned her down politely. Suzanne then decided to take off her clothes and try even harder. She was drop- dead gorgeous but Adrien stuck to his rules and declined.
Suzanne picked up her clothes, wore them back and stormed out in shame, mumbling how her situation was always different.
Adrien wasn't expecting her to quit over him. Maybe he was becoming too distracting, he thought. Or she had probably made a bet that she would end up in bed with him. That was the only sensible explanation for her actions.
He shifted his thoughts from Suzanne to the new staff of interns that would be coming in the next week. He had to inform his administration manager to prepare a new speech for them before they resumed work. He picked up his telephone and dialed his number immediately.
A WEEK LATER
"Good morning everyone, my name is Spencer Durand and I'm the manager of Administrations in this reputable company. We're all glad to have you here and as I'm sure you all know, this is the biggest opportunity of your life so don't mess it up. Now, there are some rules and a speech I've prepared specially for you. The CEO will be joining us soon. Now, onto the rules..." Spencer's voice gradually drowned out of Camille's ears.
She felt like there was a knot in her stomach and it was not because she was nervous, but because of the public embarrassment she was waiting to receive. Since her encounter with Adrien, she had gone home crying bitterly and drowning in her sorrows.
When the employment mail came in, she was overwhelmed with joy, but she didn't know what to expect. It was either Adrien had forgotten to do as he said, or he wanted to publicly embarrass her and she wouldn't be surprised if he did the latter because he was known for his ruthlessness.
Standing here in the midst of the crowd, she just wanted the administration manager to stop talking so they could be shown their booths and she could hide her face from him forever and hope he'd forget about her eventually.
"...and those are all the rules! I hope everyone got it" Spencer said, snapping her back to reality. Everyone else nodded promptly.
"What's up with you today Camille?" Simone said, nudging her slightly.
Great, she had been too focused on Adrien's reaction to her presence to even listen to the rules.
Camille inhaled and exhaled. She had to be confident at least so she could at least impress Adrien if he decided to let her go as soon as he set his eyes on her. She looked up from the ground and the small crowd murmured among themselves.
Camille wondered what could be happening and then she saw HIM! Their eyes met and Camille withdrew her gaze immediately, cursing herself.
Adrien stood tall, walking majestically to the center of the first floor where the small crowd of interns stood with the administration manager.
His crisp black tux glistened in the sun reflected by the open windows and his smooth jawline complimented his icy blue eyes. His tux clung to his muscles a little which was even hotter and everyone could see his ripped muscles through the tux.
Camille shook herself back to reality, she could not possibly be drooling over someone who had disrespected her and would be ready to do it again if he so wished.
Every step Adrien took closer to them made Camille's heart flutter. She didn't know if she was swooned by his hotness or afraid of his reaction to seeing her.
She wasn't surprised that Simone was not the least worried because she had other options and connections, unlike she who had only her dying mother to worry about first.
Adrien approached them finally and shook hands with the administration manager who greeted him politely, introducing the interns to him.
"Simone Jarvis, intern in administrations sir" Adrien's brows furrowed.
He knew that face, he had definitely seen her somewhere. Simone greeted him politely and immediately stepped to the side, before he would recognize her.
"Camille Vincent, intern in administrations sir, although she was the one the recruiting team were considering for the position of secretary".
Secretary? Camille was shocked. It was a dream come true and a curse. On one hand, she could be on a higher pay and on the other hand, she would be closer to Adrien. There was no avoiding him now.
"I definitely recognize you. I couldn't place your friend's face over there, but I definitely remember yours" Adrien said, staring deeply into Camille's eyes.
At that point, Camille could melt into the floor.
"Good morning sir" she found herself saying, like she hadn't met him before then.
Everyone went silent, waiting for Adrien's next words. Camille felt like she could burst up or that the ground would open up and swallow her up.
"Secretary huh? You'll have to prove yourself to me then Camilla" Adrien said finally after staring into her soul for what seemed like forever.
"It's.. it's Camille" Camille muttered.
"What?" Adrien turned.
"I...I said it's Camille. My name...it's Camille, not Camilla" Camille repeated, fidgeting.
"Okay. Camille, Camilla, whatever. Come by my office after the tour by the administration manager" Adrien said and left for his office.
Camille breathed a sigh of relief, at least he didn't fire her on the spot.
He seemed unusually calm even, observing her. It was unlike him, based on all the stories she had heard about him and from her own little experience the week before.
"Yes sir" she responded.
"Okay, we will now be taking a tour of the building..." Spencer continued.
Camille felt a hand on hers and turned to see Simone beside her, with a warm smile.
"We'll be fine, Cam " she said, whispering.
Camille could feel her eyes welling up. She had survived this stage. Now, she had to prepare her mind for whatever was coming.
