"How's the investigation going?" asked the tall man in a black custom-made suit, who was standing by the window. He had a cold aura around him. His icy tone was devoid of any emotion and when he spoke it felt like one was being stung by a thousand needles!
"Sorry, Sir! I...I haven't found any clues yet!" answered the man in front of him sheepishly, lowering his head. The man appeared to be quite strong but was trembling slightly when one looked at him closely.
"What?" The sophisticated gentleman suddenly turned around and asked sharply, "It's been seven years. Your investigation has gone on for so long, but you still haven't found any clue. You've been completely useless to me. I should fire you!"
"I'm sorry, Sir! I will step up my efforts and surely find Miss Luo!" the strong man apologized hastily.
"Will you?" asked the man, raising both, his eyebrows and his voice. "You've been trying to locate her for several years and you've failed! How much longer will it take you to find her now?"
"Um..." The strong man looked at his boss with a mix of terror and embarrassment. "We will do it as soon as possible!"
Edmund Jun strolled up to the strong man menacingly, and finally stopped in front of him. With an evil smile on his face, he slowly moved behind the strong man, raised his foot, and kicked the back of the man's knees.
"Ah!" Yelping in pain, the strong man collapsed on to the ground as his knees buckled. A thin layer of sweat covered his forehead. He did not dare to move, afraid that if he made his boss unhappy, he would be punished more severely.
At the same time, he secretly cursed his three companions. They always pushed him to take the fall every time they had to report to Edmund Jun. 'Those scumbags!' he thought angrily.
"Now, I'm asking you once more. How long will it take? Don't test my patience," demanded Edmund Jun, as he sauntered back to the soft leather chair behind the desk and elegantly sunk into it.
Sweat trickled down the strong man's forehead. The question on everyone's mind was: did something bad happen to Miss Luo since she had not been found yet? But nobody dared to say it out loud in front of Edmund Jun as they didn't want to die. He wasn't a man they could afford to anger.
Closing his eyes, the strong man swallowed hard and said, "Please give us three more months! If we can't find her in three months, we will accept any punishment given by you, Sir!"
'At least I won't be alone on the road to the hell, because there are three more people outside,' thought the strong man somewhat happily.
"Okay!" Edmund Jun agreed and added, "I will look at your investigation report three months later. If you fail, you know the consequences."
The strong man replied with a quivering voice, "Yes, I got it!"
"Then you can leave now!" said Edmund Jun dismissively.
His eyes fell on the photo on his desk, and his heart ached. 'Rebecca, I've been looking for you for seven years! Where are you? If I find you, I will break your legs and imprison you! I don't want to live a long and endless life without you!'
In the past few years, he had got rid of all the thorns in his path. He had ruthlessly dealt with his grandfather and parents, who were against his decision to be with her. He had taken away his grandfather's rights and controlled his parents' finances.
'You know I can do anything to get what I want. If they can't find you, I'm afraid that I have to take advantage of your mother to get you back. So, please come back to me quickly! I'm on the verge of losing control!'
"Buzz, buzz, buzz..."
The phone ring pulled Edmund Jun out of his obsessive thoughts. He glanced at the caller ID on the phone. Rolling his eyes, he answered the call. Before he could say something, the person on the other end of the phone blurted, "Edmund! When did you have an illegitimate child?"
Edmund Jun frowned. "Greg, if there is nothing else, don't waste my time," he scolded. He was not in the mood for jokes because he hadn't found her yet.
However, when he wanted to hang up the phone, Greg Gu yelled, "Edmund, wait! Don't hang up! Listen, I saw a mini version of you in KFC today. He looked so much like you when you were a child. Although that little boy is a bit chubby, he is very cute. There was a beautiful lady next to the boy. She had delicate features, and her eyes were gentle, and her smile was as refreshing as the spring breeze!"
Edmund's heart suddenly started beating fast. His hand twitched as he asked nervously, "Does she have dimples?"
"Yes, she does!"
Edmund was so excited to get there that he hung up immediately. His long-lost love had returned. He picked up the photo on the table and laughed ecstatically. The void in his heart would finally be filled. He was very sure that the lady described by Greg Gu was his cute little rabbit. The child that looked like him must be his son. So she had left with his unborn child without telling him seven years ago!
Grabbing the keys, Edmund rushed out. He wanted to catch his little rabbit before she escaped!
In the meantime...
A wave of nostalgia hit Rebecca Luo when she stared at the mottled walls of the old house in the suburb. However, when she reached out, her hand stopped in midair. She bit her lip and finally looked down into her son's big eyes. Then she knocked on the door.
Shortly after, the door opened and a kind and slightly elderly woman came out. Seeing Rebecca Luo, the woman's eyes brimmed with tears. She stared at Rebecca Luo without blinking, fearing that she would disappear from her sight next second.
"Mom, I'm back!" announced Rebecca Luo as tears welled up in her eyes too. No one knew how hard the past seven years had been for her and her son, Randy.
The events of the past replayed in both women's minds. Those painful memories had never disappeared from their hearts.
"That's great!" said Carla Luo in a choked voice.
"Hello, Grandma. I'm Randy!" The little boy introduced himself, who was standing beside his mother. When he saw that their eyes had turned red, he suddenly smiled brightly, hoping to cheer them up.
Turning her attention to the boy, Carla Luo froze for a moment. Then she smiled tenderly and bent down to look into Randy's eyes. "Good boy. I'm your grandmother!"
Rebecca Luo's heart soared at the endearing sight of her mother and her son getting along. The vision that appeared countless times in her dream had finally come true today. Although she had been through a lot in the past, at this moment, she only felt happy and content.
Carla Luo was still chatting away merrily with Randy when she suddenly realized that they were still standing at the door. She quickly let them in.
However, before closing the door, Carla Luo checked the surroundings warily. Although the men in black had stopped monitoring her house in the last three years, she was still worried about being discovered by that horrid man. It was not easy for Rebecca Luo to live a normal life now, and her mother didn't want that man to ruin her life again.
Carla Luo was observed closely every day in the first four years after her daughter left. Mysterious men invaded her privacy, following her wherever she went. That man wanted to find her daughter at any cost. He hunted her like a crazed beast, but it was all in vain!
The old house was spotless. Flowers adorned the yard and their fragrance was carried by the gentle breeze to Rebecca's nose, refreshing her mind, body, and spirit.
"Mom, how about you now?" Studying her mother's face, she found that age had taken over her pale face, and a few strands of white hair had appeared at her temples. She could not help but feel sad.
Her mother had always been a gentle, caring, and generous person. She reminisced how she would help her mother comb her long and smooth hair. They hadn't seen each other for seven years, and her mother's hair had greyed during this time.
"I'm fine! The doctor said that I'm a little weak so I just need to rest. If I wasn't okay, the doctor would not allow me to leave the hospital." Carla didn't want her daughter to worry about her, so she only told her part of the truth. The doctor had strongly advised her to rest and not tire herself out. Otherwise, her body would not be able to bear it.
"Mom, do you want to live with me? You can have Randy as your company too." She didn't want to leave her mother alone anymore, but as long as that man was in the same city, she would continue to live in fear. So it would be the best if her mother agreed to her suggestion.
"This is where I want to live for the rest of my life!" said Carla with a resolute expression, her eyes lighting up. She wanted to end up on the ground where she was born.
Rebecca shot her a confused look. She didn't expect her mother to have such strong feelings towards this place. However, she was worried about letting her mother live here alone too.
"Don't worry about me. You can leave at night. He doesn't monitor me now anymore, but the longer you stay here, the more dangerous it will be for you, especially with Randy in the picture." Although Carla was thrilled to see her daughter and wished she didn't have to leave, she didn't want to put Rebecca at the risk of being found by her tormentor.
Carla would never forget the last time when she saw her daughter, who finally got away from the devil seven years ago. Her bony figure, glassy eyes, and the shocking bruises on her body, broke Carla's heart into pieces. Her young and beautiful daughter was destroyed by that evil man, and she blamed herself for it.
Slightly frowning, Rebecca stared at the flowers blooming in the yard, and then looked at Carla. "You are my mother. How can I let you live here alone?" she said with concern.
"I'm fine now and can take care of myself. Besides, if, someday, I can't move around by myself, I will go to the nursing home or hire a nanny. So don't worry about me. What I want most now is your freedom and happiness!" Carla held Rebecca's hands and realized that they had become rough. She lowered her head and stared intently at her daughter's hands. They used to be so soft. She must have suffered so much in these years. Saddened at her plight, Carla tried to hold back the storm of emotions rolling inside her.
"Mom!" Rebecca felt guilty for not being a good daughter to her mother. She felt that she had abandoned her mother since she left home at the age of nineteen. Even now Rebecca had to keep moving to different places with her son because of that man.
"Well, you'd better leave now! You can come back to see me when you are safe," said Carla lovingly. Turning to look at Randy, who had been sitting quietly, Carla said, "I will miss you. Be a good boy and listen to your mother, okay?"
"Yes, Grandma. I promise! And I will miss you too. I will come back with Mom to visit you again," Randy said, smiling sweetly. He liked his kind and gentle grandmother, so he suddenly leaned in and dropped a kiss on her cheek.
Carla was taken by surprise for a moment, but then she quickly came to her senses. Laughing happily, she hugged Randy hard before letting go. Then she took his little hand and said to Rebecca, "I'll see you out. You can pack up and fly back now."
Rebecca opened her mouth twice, but in the end, her words was still stuck in her throat. She had originally planned to stay with her mother for two or three days, but when she saw the panic in her mother's eyes at the mention of that man, she felt sorry. She had to listen to her mother and leave.
There were very few taxis in this quiet suburb. So she had to take a bus to the urban district. She held Randy's hand and walked towards the bus station.
"Mom, why did Grandma say that you would be in danger here? Isn't this your home? Why can't we stay here with Grandma?" He was bursting with curiosity when they were at his grandmother's home, but when he saw their serious expressions, he decided to wait until he was alone with his mother. Now that he had the opportunity, he bombarded her with all the questions he had.
"There are bad people here and I'm not strong enough to fight them. If they find us, I will be taken away by them," Rebecca answered simply, knowing that although Randy was young, he was mature in his thinking.
"Mom, when I grow up, I will protect you and punish those bad guys," Randy announced firmly, looking at his mother. He was the only man in the family, so he had to shoulder the responsibility of protecting her.
"Okay, honey. I was so happy to..." Rebecca suddenly stiffened and her lips trembled at the sight before her. A man was standing in front of a car. If she hadn't been holding Randy's hand, she would have collapsed by now.
Randy was an intuitive little boy and immediately sensed that something was amiss with his mother. His eyes followed her gaze and he saw the man wearing a black suit. Even though he was standing there quietly, he attracted everyone's attention. He was a born king, emitting an aura that was both regal and oppressive.
"Hello, Rebecca, long time no see!" Blood lust shone in the man's eyes when he saw that Rebecca was no longer as innocent as before. Instead, she had a mature and attractive air around her. He could not help but gulp hungrily. In the past seven years, he had missed her like crazy but he could only contend himself by spending those long nights with her photos.
This time, no one could stop him. If he lost her again, he would definitely go crazy!
When Rebecca heard his voice, the blood drained from her face. Her skin was as white as a sheet. She couldn't help trembling in his presence. Her scalp tingled and her fingertips turned icy.
"Mom!" called Randy, worried that his mother would fall down. He held her hand tightly, hoping to give her courage and warmth.
Her son's voice jolted her back to her senses. "Ah!" she cried, looking down into Randy's eyes, which were full of anxiety. There was a pang of sadness in her heart. Now that she had a son, she would have to summon the courage to face this man. Seven years had passed, and she was no longer the timid girl she used to be. She needed to take a deep breath and calm down as Randy was still beside her.
Looking boldly at the arrogant and domineering man in front of her, she straightened her spine and stepped in front of Randy. "Edmund, long time no see!" she said calmly. 'And I hope we will never see each other again.'
Looking at Rebecca's defiant stance, Edmund's eyes turned dark and dangerous. The woman, who still wanted to keep his son away from him, filled his heart with rage. She seemed to have become stronger after all these years. He wanted to clip her wings immediately so that he could manipulate her.
"So tell me, after running away and seeing the world outside, what do you feel about it? Is it beautiful? Is it fun?" Edmund eyed her hungrily like a predator. And even though he sounded calm, a storm was brewing in his dark eyes.
She was so scared that she wanted to scream, but her throat went dry.
She gritted her teeth and pleaded with her eyes. Edmund was deeply satisfied to see the panic in her eyes. It seemed that a part of the timid girl still existed inside her. This realization fired him up and a searing heat of desire coursed through his body. His eyes gleamed like that of a wolf.
He took the first step, then the second and the third...
As he stalked over to her, a little figure suddenly ran out from behind her and spread his weak arms in front of her in a protective gesture. The little boy's eyes were fierce and his face was scrunched up. It was this bad man, who made his mother very panic-stricken. At this moment, he wished that he could grow up quickly, so that no one dared to bully his mother.
Edmund wanted to hug the boy, but he had missed Rebecca for so long. He yearned for touching her and inhaling her fragrance, so he signaled the men in black behind him.
"Let me go!" shrieked Randy when he was grabbed by one of Edmund's men. He squirmed and struggled, and his desperate cries made Rebecca spring into action. She screeched and raced to rescue her baby boy, but she was intercepted halfway.
"Let me go!" howled Rebecca. She tried hard to wriggle out of the man's grasp but he was too strong to shake off. Suddenly, she spotted Randy being shoved into a car, so she bit her captor's arm ferociously. She hated Edmund so bitterly at that moment that she wanted to kill him.
"No, I won't let you go for the rest of my life. I will imprison you so that you can never leave me. And if you dare to escape, I will break your legs!" Edmund said softly, biting her earlobe teasingly. His warm breath on her skin made her feel sick.
"You are a monster. I hope you die a horrible death! Give me my son back!" She sobbed, her eyes and nose turning red.
"How dare you keep him from me for seven years? I haven't settled accounts with you yet. Let's do it slowly tonight. You will never forget it." Edmund looked at the blood oozing from the teeth mark on his arm and felt an abnormal pleasure. His little rabbit had become feistier and he was going to punish her.
His soft voice belied his thunderous rage, which made her head buzz. Rebecca glared at him angrily and snapped, "Edmund, he is my child!"
"Without me, you never would have him!" said Edmund seductively, pressing his chin on her shoulder gently. His eyes had turned dark now.
"Don't flatter yourself!" Rebecca stopped struggling and looked at the car not far away, where Randy was in. She was terrified of letting him out of her sight.
"You're too naive. Haven't you seen my baby photos? Later, I will show you how handsome I was when I was as a child." Edmund hugged her tightly and inhaled her scent. He really missed her.
"No!" She didn't want to have anything to do with him for the rest of her life. She just wanted to stay away from him.
"It is not up to you!" Edmund fumed at her refusal. His eyes bulged and a vein popped on his forehead. He grabbed her arm roughly, and her skin turned white.
"Edmund, let go of me! I hate you. You have ruined my life. I have been separated from my mother for seven years, and I still can't go back home. Do you know how much I curse you every day? Why are you still..." Rebecca stopped abruptly. Her eyes rolled backward and she fainted in his arms.
Edmund looked at her slightly open red lips with satisfaction. She had become very disobedient but for now, he would let her have a good sleep.
He marched to the car with Rebecca in his arms, unable to contain this excitement. Not only did he get Rebecca, but also a child as a gift. One look at Randy told him that the little boy was his son. He was an exact replica.
Seeing Randy pounding on the car window, Edmund sneered silently. Although the little boy was his son, Rebecca was more important to Edmund.
"You bad guy, let go of my Mom!" Randy got out of the car, glaring at the man. He thought that the bad man knocked his mother out. It was unforgivable!
"Little boy, your Mom is mine. You are too young and weak to take her away from me," said Edmund coldly while one of his men controlled Randy. He was determined to not even allow his son to take her away from him.
Hearing this, Randy pushed the man holding him with all his might and dashed toward Edmund. The little fellow attacked him like a barbaric shrew, pounding his legs with his tiny fists, biting, tearing, and pulling. Having expended all the energy in his tiny body, he slumped wearily. Edmund witness the entire scene with nonchalance.
"Is that enough? Are you done?" Edmund asked coolly, ignoring the hatred in the little boy's eyes. Before Randy could answer, he ordered the men next to him, "Take him to his room. If he sneaks out, you know the consequences!"
The four men stood up straight in panic and replied in unison, "Yes!"
As they carried Randy off to his room, his heart-wrenching wails echoed in the air. He only wanted one thing: "Mom! Mom!"
It was a tragic sight!
