Chapter 1

1

(MELANIE MARTINEZ POV):

I watched with great interest as she moved her body like a delicate flower. The way she swayed with ease and passion amazed me immensely. I couldn't believe it myself. This was what I wanted for myself when I get older. I literally daydreamed of the day hundreds of men would watch me in action as I portray my talent on that stage. But little did I know that my twin sister already had my life planned out for me.

Hello, my name is Melanie Martinez and this is my story. The story of my unfortunate life and how I got to meet a powerful demon king, Denver Hale.

You see, what you read earlier was something that used to happen when I was just a little child.

My mother was that graceful woman on stage. She wasn't a ballerina and nor was she some other sort of dancer.

Well, she was actually a dancer but not just any kind. My mother was a pole dancer that I adored so much as a kid.

To me, it was all about the beauty of it. I was just an innocent child at mind and heart and didn't see what the actual aim of her dance was as of then.

What kind of mother would take her kids to the club like this and do what she was doing right before their eyes?

Well, I didn't mention my dad at the beginning did I?

He was a victim of a car crash on his way to the hospital where my mother was giving birth to I and my twin sister. The doctor didn't tell her that till after she was done bringing us into the world.

Mom revealed this truth to us only when we were sixteen. She had originally planned to tell us when we reach eighteen but because we kept pushing to know she just let it out.

During those days when we were too young to be left at home, my mother always took us to the club she worked as a pole dancer, sat us down in a room meant for her to change and told us not to come out of the room.

Of course she didn't intentionally let us see her but I was the stubborn one of course and would always peep through a small opening on the door.

My sister, on the other hand, had no interest in our mother's work as I did and had stopped watching the very first day she had seen what mom does for a living.

She just stayed put on the floor and waited till our mom was done. She would sometimes fall asleep when mom took till deep at night to finish.

Mind you, my sister, Delanie, isn't normally like this. My sister is actually a very manipulative kind of person. She's much more of a liar, exploiter, and a big thief.

It's almost like it's in her genes really so I wasn't surprised she would be the one to give me such a miserable life and turn me into a prostitute for her own benefits.

Let me not rush into things just yet and start it up from the top...

My mom had a magic hand in making lemonade and now that we were adults, nineteen years old to be precise, mom made me and Delanie help her out in selling while she went pole dancing.

We were just right outside our most visited selling point outside a school when a high school boy walked up to our stand.

"A glass of lemonade please ma'am." The boy said.

I poured out a glass for him and gave it to him.

The boy stretched forth his hand towards me with the money but Delanie snatched it from his hand.

"Delanie? Why did you do that?" I asked her, shocked at the way she yanked the money out of the young boy's hand.

"Shut up witch. Delanie does whatever she wants whenever she wants." Delanie replied to me.

"My change ma'am." The boy said.

"What change? You better run off with the lemonade while you still can or else I'll drink it too." Delanie threatened and stepped for then the boy ran off.

"Why the hell do you keep doing that to people?" I asked Delanie.

"Only the tough survive. This is earth and not some sort of heaven where you think good deeds would take you places." Delanie answered.

"One day this behaviour of yours would turn things sour for you." I said to her.

"Watch your mouth. You're only spared because you are my sister and mainly because of mom." Delanie told me but I ignored her.

People around, especially in this area we are now, always knew Delanie to be an awful person and had always tried to buy from me I'm her absence or just try not to look her way.

Most people ensure to come with the exact amount of money so as not to have their entire money seized by Delanie who would outrun the police anytime she is reported.

Actually, the police would still follow me home just to meet Delanie but not even mom knows where she spends the night in such cases.

It actually got to a point that the police gave up totally on her and told anyone who came with a report against her that it was a normal thing.

I'm so fed up of my sister. I don't even know who she got it from.

That day, after we sold the last batch of lemonade, I and my sister reached home only to hear loud shouts from right outside our house.

"Ugh! What is it this time?! Can't I come back home to a quiet house for once? It's been very stressful." Delanie complained.

"Stressful? You hardly did anything." I said to her.

"Yeah, but I went outside with you. That is still stressful." Delanie replied.

I just shook my head and opened the door and to my surprise, it was our late dad's brother, uncle Gavin

"Melanie? Delanie? You're back so soon?" Mom asked us.

"Obviously." Delanie answered.

"Don't mind her mom. What's going on here?" I asked.

"It's nothing girls. Just go to your room and wait it out a bit okay?" Mom answered.

"Nothing? Go to their room? Don't you think it's about time you start treating you children as adults Barbra?" Our uncle asked.

"It's non of your business the way I train my children. So stop sticking your nose where it doesn't belong." Mom answered back.

Uncle Gavin grinned cunningly at mom then wiped it off and turned directly at I and Delanie. He walked till he reached where we stood and whispered to us.

"Do you want to know a little secret?" Uncle Gavin asked.

"Gavin!" Mom shouted his name but that didn't stop him from speaking up.

"Your mother here is about to loose everything to me. That's what." Uncle Gavin said, smiles and walked to the door.

"I'll leave you all here to discuss everything." Uncle Gavin said and laughed before finally shutting the door after his exit.

"Mom? What is he talking about?" I asked, uncertain if I really wanted to hear the truth.

Mom hesitated to speak.

"Speak up mother! What was it that made uncle so happy?!" Delanie shouted at mom.

"Calm down Delanie. I will tell you both everything. Just... Come sit with me." Mom said and sat down on a chair and we sat down separately on two other chairs, one on each side of mom.

Mom took a deep breath then started her story.

"It was years ago that everything happened. You dad was a good man and his family equally love me as much as they loved him but..." Mom said and paused a bit.

"Well?" Delanie asked.

"Right after delivering you two in the hospital, I was informed only then that my husband had died in a car crash..."

"We already know this mother. Just go straight to the point." Delanie interrupted, impatiently.

"Come on Delanie. Don't speak to our mom that way please." I said to Delanie.

"It's non of your business what I do Melanie. Do I have to keep reminding you?" Delanie said to me.

"It's enough girls. I'll just go straight to the point now." Mom said.

"Some days later, your dad's lawyer came to me. He said that your dad had left us all his property and savings. We were not as rich as his family because he chose to do everything on his own without their financial assistance but we were okay. Except one problem." Mom said.

"What problem?" I asked, worried.

"Well, your dad's family were not happy with his will and ever since then they hated me and treated me badly. They have all they could ever want but yet they want to take away the little my husband, your dad, left for us." Mom explained and sobbed.

I comforted mom and while I did, Delanie got up from her chair.

"So... Wait... You mean to tell me that they have finally gotten their way? That's what uncle Gavin was actually happy about?" Delanie asked in unbelief.

"Yes." Mom managed to answer her.

"What?! We... We are going to be even poorer than we already are?!" Delanie screamed.

"Delanie please calm down. It's tough for everyone else, especially mom. And,we are not poor. At least we've still got each other." I said to Delanie.

"Each other my f*cking foot! I think you watch too many movies these days." Delanie said and dashed to our room.

"Everything is going to be okay mom. I'm sure you will figure something out." I said to mom.

"It's too late for that Melanie. He only gave us today. From tomorrow morning he doesn't want to see us in this house anymore." Mom explained to me.

This is just horrible. How are we supposed to survive out there? My mom couldn't just depend on the money from pole dancing could she?

And I don't even like the fact that she sleeps with those worthless men in the bar. It hurts. What if that was your mom's lifestyle? Would you support it? But then I have no choice. It brings in more pay than the lemonade.

"I think I'll have to talk to my boss. Maybe he'd let us live in my changing room in the bar. It's the only place of can think of right now." Mom said.

"I'm with you all the way mom. As long as we have a roof over our head then it's not a problem for me." O said to her.

"Yes, for you but unfortunately, your sister Delanie will never agree to it. She would never understand. She had always wanted the best life for herself and look, I couldn't even afford to send you both to college." Mom complained and cried again.

"It's alright mom. It's not like she has anywhere else to go. She will definitely come along even if she doesn't want to." I said to mom.

Night time came and mom went to her room while I went to mine. Delanie was already asleep so I just laid on my own bed to sleep.

Things have gotten even worst for I and my family and I don't know what to do. I just hope mom's boss actually listens to her or else we would have to live in the streets.

... The next day...

Mom came to our room and woke us up early. She opened the curtains and I squeezed my eyelids shut. The light had come as a surprise but I got used to it slowly and opened my eyes.

"We have to go now. Quickly." Mom said to me and Delanie.

"Why?" Delanie asked and pulled her blanket over her head.

To my surprise, mom had already packed I and Delanie's things.

"Mom why the hurry? What's going on?" I asked, feeling a bit nervous.

"I can't explain now. You two should get up now! Follow me immediately!" Mom ordered and I rushed out of bed for fear of seriousness of whatever issue it was.

Delanie also got off bed and stood up to stretch.

"I have to take a bath first before going anywhere." Delanie said.

"This is serious Delanie. No time for baths. Take this." Mom said, shoving Delanie's luggage into her hands and mine into my own hands.

She rushed out of our room and we followed her from behind as quickly as we could.

"Mom

"Could you please explain what is going on?" I asked her.

"Not now sweetie." Mom said and opened the front door but only to bump into uncle Gavin.

Mom almost fell on her butt but I wedged her from behind just in time.

"I never thought you would so much be in a hurry to follow orders." Uncle Gavin said to mom.

"Stay out of my way you freak." Mom replied uncle Gavin.

"Freak? Oh dear sister in-law. Is that any way to speak to your late husband's brother? Oh, I forgot. He's dead so of course it's an opportunity for your true colours to come out." Uncle Gavin stated, causing my to gibe him a slap across the cheek.

Uncle Gavin was about to speak up but drew his attention to the luggages we were holding.

"Since when did you have that much clothes?" Uncle Gavin asked.

That was the moment I actually noticed the size of the luggage mom took out for herself. She had many clothes but not that much.

"Empty the luggages." Uncle Gavin ordered.

"You can't tell me what to do." Mom opposed.

"Think again woman." Uncle Gavin said and snapped his fingers.

Two men in black suits appeared from behind uncle Gavin and walked into the house, causing me, Delanie and mom to walk backwards.

"Empty her bags." Uncle Gavin ordered the two men.

One of the men yanked the bag off mom's hands. While she was still struggling to get it back from him, the second man grabbed of mom.

"Hey! Let go of our mom!" I shouted but what could I do against such huge men? I was about to think of a way to help but before I got to do so, a sound distracted me.

The first man had emptied mom's bag and found gold in it. Just one block of gold.

My eyes widened in surprise. Where did mom get such a huge...

"So now you want to steal from your late husband's family?" Uncle Gavin said.

"At least now I know where I got my bad habit from." Delanie said.

"Throw them all out." Uncle told one of the men after he walked fully into the house.

"And you." he said to the second man.

"Get that gold wrapped and put it in my car." Uncle ordered.

"Yes sir." The man replied.

Mom, Delanie, and I were pushed out of the house and our bags were thrown at us.

We picked up ours while mom gathered hers. I bent down to help her.

"Thank you." She said to me.

"Mom? Why did you steal?" I asked her.

"We needed a shelter Melanie. That gold would have gotten us enough to buy a house and other things but I wad caught." Mom answered.

"Oh look, I got her greedy genes too." Delanie said.

"Why don't you just shut up Delanie? At least mom had a good reason but you just do stupid things for stupid reasons." I said to Delanie.

"Survival of the fittest sis." Delanie said to me.

"So where are we going?" Delanie asked, after I was done helping mom.

Mom carried her bag and answered Delanie.

"To the bar." Mom said.

"To that same rotten bar you work in? No way. I hate that place." Delanie complained.

"It's not like we have any other choice." I said to Delanie.

"Oh, we do. Actually, scratch that. The right thing for me to say is, I do. I have a choice. See you two later or never." Delanie said, walking away from us and waving her hand in the air without looking back.

"Where are you going Delanie?" Mom asked her.

"Far away from poverty. I'm going to stay with my friends. The same usual place I go. Don't bother looking for me." Delanie answered and continued to move till she was out of site.

I could see the sadness and disappointment in mom's eyes but I chose to stay quiet.

"You people are still here? Vacate this place immediately." Uncle Gavin said to us after stepping out of the house.

I and my mother started walking to her work place. It took us some time but we finally reached there feeling very tired from the long walk.

The bar was only just opening and we walked in to meet mom's boss.

There was a small office deeper inside the bar. I and my mom went in and luckily for us the boss was around.

"Good day Mr Levinson." My mom greeted.

"Good day Barbra. What brings you here so early in the morning?" Mr Levinson asked mom.

"I'm really in a deep problem sir and I was wondering if you could help both I and my daughter." Mom said.

Mr Levinson took a look at me from top to bottom even if he was still sitting.

"Good day sir." I greeted.

"Good day. How are you this fine morning?" Mr Levinson asked me.

"Good." I answered.

"What seems to be the problem?" He asked my mom, turning his attention to her.

"Sir, you see, we were kicked out of the place which we lived. Now we have no home and I was wondering...

" Hold it right there."Mr Levinson spoke up, interrupting mom.

"I hope you are not implying that I give you a place to stay. I have a wife and kids and can not do that." Mr Levinson added.

"Oh no, that's not it sir. I would never intrude in your personal live." Mom said to him.

"Then what do you want?" Mr Levinson asked mom.

"To live here in the bar." Mom answered.

"Are you out of your wits woman? How do you expect me to let you live in a bar? My bar?" Mr Levinson questioned.
